I think Franz is extremely troubled or is confused on what is categorised as filler
I dont think so though. He simply has very straightforfward option. And honestly between it and a lot of you doing mental gymnastics instead of asking why an author didnt do better in their own work... I prefer his

"In anime, filler refers to original episodes, scenes, or entire story arcs created by animation studios that were not part of the original source material, such as a manga or light novel."

This is the official definition.

If you want to dispute it, that’s your business.
You mean the "official definition" that AI spat out after skimming through a couple of Reddit posts?

Wikipedia has a totally different definition, and even then, that's not "official" because it says it's subjective at the end of the day...and it's Wikipedia.

You're free to have your opinion, but in your headcanon about what the definition of canon is, you're taking away the agency of the author to do what they want according to your rigid desires for their story. In this case, it's not just an animation studio making episodes based on a manga; it's Kubo himself modifying his story without the constraints of health or time to make changes and additions he'd like to see in his own story. If he wanted to expand the canon of Bleach through a random commercial or art gallery, it's within his right to do that too.

I think the actual mental gymnastics at play here is thinking that us believing that Kubo writing new material that fits into the canon is somehow a complicated enough process to be labeled as mental gymnastics. Downplaying a simple 2-plus-2 thinking process as mental gymnastics really just seems like a bit of projection that covers up mental gymnastics by layering even more mental gymnastics on top of it.

Or maybe the real mental gymnastics was the friends we made along the way, I don't even know at this point.

As far as filler goes, I see as one of those things that you can't really define exactly. You can try to explain whatever specific sets of circumstances apply to the original content you want to accept as proper canon, but ultimately it all comes down to vibes.

Some anime original content feels like filler, some doesn't. That's it.

Again, you seem to really not comprehend what "filler" means because you're not only talking about some random anime original arc but saying literal canon material in movies, light novels and changes writen by the own creator for anime are "filler" because they're not included in a manga.

You're acting like a manga is the absolute gospel that is above everybody else including it's own creators lol

You also doesn't seem to comprehend what canon means, the manga isn't the primary source, the author & creator is the primary source, a manga is just one of the tools for the author to tell the story and at any moment he wants, he can change what it was said in that manga and the new information/adaptation will be the new "canon", we have many instances of that happening in every sort of media including cases like Shaman King rewriting it's entire "final arc" years after its completion. Also something being a "adaptation" of the manga doesn't make it not canon because again, canon is what the author decides, not the fact that it "came first".

Light Novel books aren't "adaptations" of the manga but extended stories and material mean to expand the world and tell stories not able to be told in the manga.

Dragon Ball Super is the worst example out there that you could use, because there was no "official source" between them, both anime & manga are their own canon version based in the plotlines created by Akira Toriyama, and this isn't me saying, both Toei & Toyotaro confirmed ages ago that both anime & manga followed Toriyama storyline, so none of them were a adaptation but their own thing, also just to complicate even more, if the manga is a adaptation of the anime and the anime ended 8 years ago, by your logic wouldnt be everything in the manga post the universal tournament be "filler"? :XD

Franz, are you actually watching the TYBW anime? It has a fucking ton of changes and story additions that change a lot of stuff from the manga, which also btw improved the hell out of the arc, we got a whole episode of the Squad Zero using their bankais which was never shown in the manga, Kubo wrote a whole new form for Ichigo, and you really going to tell all of these are "fillers" just because it's not in the freaking manga? If you really think, so again, i feel like you don't know what "canon" and "filler" actually are lol

777 freaking votes for Kathy by just 1 person! :XD

I think this alone just cleared up all my confusion as to the Nue character rankings.

Nue has the right ratio of nicheness coupled with super passionate fans that something like this single person’s extreme love of a character can completely rocket them to a podium spot. In most other situations people either wouldn’t be this devoted, or if they were, the series would be big enough that 700 votes to a more niche character would only bump them up a couple of spots. But with Nue, that kind of stuff becomes a major component.

I would be willing to say this explains every other abnormality in the rankings, ESPECIALLY Suo’s mom who I did not remember even making an appearance in the story. It could also have happened with multiple people on smaller scales, which I’m sure is how it went for Kabane.

I’ll be honest though, I don’t really love how this happens, since it leads to popularity polls being less a flat representation of the fanbase’s favorites and more a gauge of how financially invested a certain character’s total fanbase is. There’s not really a good way around it though, especially when to Jump the freak incidents like this one just mean more magazine circulation and money for them.

Nue's poll ran for a bit more than 25 days, I think. It was a short period and you only had a single vote per magazine/volume. Kagurabachi had 2 votes per volume and had more than 2 months for the voting period, to give an example.

This means Nue's poll was more likely to push niche characters as people couldn't divide their votes with two characters and the voting period was short enough a single voter could have more influence.

It's also gets them more attention. Everyone remembers Kobeni's car and japanese anime/manga forums were talking about the Nue poll a lot all day yesterday because of how weird/funny it is.

I repeat: when was the manga supposedly altered by Kubo? Did I miss something?

. In this case, it's not just an animation studio making episodes based on a manga; it's Kubo himself modifying his story without the constraints of health or time to make changes and additions he'd like to see in his own story. How does it change the story if the manga stays the same?

You realize that doesn't make sense, right?

Some anime original content feels like filler, some doesn't. That's it.
The filler is the anime original content for deifnition itself

How can it be canon if it's not in the manga?

The definition of a filler is not a matter of opinion.

It is simply a fact.

Idk, Bachi's poll had a pretty pathetic turnout. And wait, it had 2 votes per volume??? So that means that off an 180k volume, only 10k fans bothered to vote? (It had 21k votes in total).
At least Nue fans actually care enough about their series to vote, how does a 30k seller have a similar amount of voters to a 150k.
If you go back to JJK's first poll, which was back when it was selling Bachi numbers, it had like 160k votes. How are the bachi fanbase so disengaged with their own series? Only the wackos showed up to boost their barely existent characters into the top 10.

I mean it’s ultimately philosophical on filler v cannon.

To me, anything the author output in the manga or give his express approval is canon. However, an anime can have cannon material (approved and coordinated with the author) that is still filler as it’s filled in to provide detail. Colloquially, filler is usually used as useless non canon material but that isn’t always the case. So technically speaking is it filler but cannon? Yes but in terms of how most people view it; it’s not filler as it’s just added detail.

Physical means you have to go mail the vote, I don't think it means that much. If someone reads a manga and likes the main character the most (which is the majority of the readers), they don't really have much of a reason to go vote.

Was JJK's digital then? I'm having trouble finding what it was, but I'm just trying to find out how there'd be such a drastic drop, between two series that sold similar numbers.

No idea. I guess a side character being the most popular can help with these polls. People who like characters like Bakugo and Gojo are more motivated to vote and that somewhat forces people who like Itadori and Deku to vote more.

Idk either way, with the top 10 of bachi's poll being populated with so many absolute nobodies (hakuri's brothers, uruha's guard), I have to imagine that there were similar characters to this Nue voter, who managed to have their barely existent faves place because there were so few voters. I know there was a hiruhiko voter that bought at least 100 volumes, which means that 1/5 of his votes were just from one person. At least for Nue you could argue the series is more niche, but I feel like this is an embarrassing thing to happen to a 150k seller. Like really, possibly only 10k of its readers cared enough to vote?

I literally posted the Akane-banashi color page here & Twitter lol

Is just that Akane doesn't have that much motion in the west, even Nue color pages get more views & likes sometimes.
Given its cultural significance and the fact we do not really have its equivalent in the west it makes sense the contrast between Japanese and Western reception would be so stark. I just started reading both series and I am enjoying the character work in Akane-Banashi much more (4 chapters into both series). I love Japanese culture when watching Akane the other night I had to put on the Japanese original, it just did not feel right listening to the performances in English (2 episodes in).

By using this incredibly limited definition of canon you're saying that stuff like Naruto The Last or the Boruto movie are fillers, Bleach Jigoku-hen movie is filler, Dragon Ball movies like The Battle of Gods, Resurrection of F and Broly are fillers

I know kubo was involved and building off hell that was briefly touched upon at the start of the series but I don't think it really fits in the canon even when the movie was still new as neatly as the others you listed. He might recycle some of the stuff and lore from the movie for the possible hell arc though.

Edit:
Kubo also wrote a prologue manga chapter for the Jigoku-hen movie published on Jump and focused on Szayelaporro being sent to hell and remember who appeared in the recent Hell one shot? DING DING! :cheez
Ngl I forgot there was a movie tie in chapter so I'll treat that as canon but the movie as a fever dream the same way I do with shiki's movie tie in chapter and strong world

Imagine the awkward meeting between Franz and Kubo when he tells Kubo that as a author he doesn't have any power over his own creation once he put something in a rushed piece of paper years ago because that piece of paper somehow it's a god above its own creator original intentions! :XD
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

There's no way Toriyama wrote Super. It's not different at all from all the other Dragon Ball original anime or Toyotaro fanfic.
Toriyama is the creator of all the main arcs & main characters of Super, this is something confirmed by both Toei & Toyotaro, Toriyama didn't "write" the episodes or chapters, he created a layout with the main plot points & developments of each arc while Toei writers & Toyotaro wrote the arcs on their own way based in these main plot points, this is why despite so many differences between both with the way the arcs developed the end was still always the same.

Toriyama was in fact heavily involved with the manga alongside Toyotaro specially after the anime ended, he was writing the manga together with Toyo and even the last chapter published before his death had many modifications done by Toriyama as Toyotaro revealed later after his death.

But according to Franz none of this matter, manga it's filler because the anime is the "original source" since it started first :derp
