Osamu Nishi is really impressive, especially as a comparison.

- writing and drawing Iruma weekly
- writing Ichi the Witch weekly
- in charge of Iruma Mafia, which is also weekly now (though I think she's doing the outline and ideas while leaving the main week to week writing up to someone else)
- and in charge of another Iruma spin-off I assume in a similar fashion to the mafia one (but I'm not sure how frequent that one is)

Other magazines have authors that struggle too of course (Frieren has been on hiatus since last year) but most of jump's big hits seem to be by people who can't keep up.
And she’s what, in her mid-40s now??

Jump can blame bad luck, but considering how Moue is drawing Akane just fine every week and they couldn't give it an anime announcement before chapter 170, I don't feel any bad for them.

Some series may not be the biggest mainstream works in the industry, but they should maximize their chances and give them anime soon. Sakamoto is still their biggest success this decade and they really missed the chance to reach its peak because of the insanely long wait for the anime.

Sakamoto is a weird case because it also had a pretty underwhelming anime.

Underwhelming?! It's getting multiple seasons though.
Even if it gets as much seasons as it needs to fully adapt the manga, it is still a pretty simple anime that didn't make the manga big as it could have been. Had it a better anime, I feel it would have grown to 200K copies a month at least.

Heh, I think you're really optimistic. Even with an excellent anime, I'm not sure if it could get these numbers.
But yeah, I don't think it was a bad anime, I even think it was clearly more than average, pretty good-looking, but the expectations were very high, so yeah, that was disappointing for many fans I guess.

I feel like if anything, Grey Keys could completely overshadow Class 2B, which is already struggling to stay afloat performance wise. Grey Keys is also going to explore a demon world, but it's not restricted to a school or trying to subvert the common yuusha tropes (and it's not going to be a stealth isekai, so readers that care about "isekai slop" won't feel lied to or led on), so if Hokami has a good and unique idea for a demon world, it could intrigue people right away. It's going to be less wordy, which was one of the barriers for Class 2B (even if Gintama fans don't mind it). Unlike a successful vet, Hokami understands he doesn't have the luxury of being patient before introducing things that could make the series exciting.

It probably comes down to how good the characters are, which luckily for Hokami, he had the chance to practice his character writing with some of the most loveable characters in all of Japan with the Demon Slayer school AU spinoff. So in theory, it should be way better than Higuma's (which by the end, I still thought was fairly solid).

===

For what it's worth, when the Jump Future Project was relatively fresh still, I went and checked the reception on Twitter for the one shots. It wasn't a perfect methodology or anything, just checking the stats of the Jump_henshubuu tweet. Grey Keys was 3rd or 4th and after it, there was a pretty big drop off in retweets and likes, so to me at least, it seemed like the one shot was decently popular (and obviously it was popular enough since it's getting serialized).

Also it's starting on #41 which means it gets the September batch buff still.
What was 1st?

Also, didn't talked about today's leaks!

This ToC is interesting, I love this top 6, with Hertz, Shinobi, Nue & Roku.
Kinda sad to see UD in Bot2. Rip Kinato.
Glad to see HF holding in 10th. And Animal Signal color!!!
Also... Nue & Roku color!!! Yeah that's really a good week.

And new series...
OMG SHUN NUMA??? Hell yeah! Also, yeah I love his artstyle of course, but his writing can be VERY GOOD especially if we get some drama in this romcom. And ofc he is funny.
I don't know David kun's author, but his artstyle seems great, so let's go!
And Grey Keys... Why not? I dont know the author nor the original one-shot, seems interesting.
I'm very interested in this batch!

100% agreed. It is so annoying and frustrating at the same time.

Yeah

Sure
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Is Hokazono having health problems again?
I don't think so
--- Double Post Merged, ---

Hokazono came out of the hiatus quite fast just for doing this again 😭

He should have rested more
????

The break was a month, and it lasted a month.

It's probably only the matter of time until he gets the Hoshino treatment
Kagurabachi won't be moved to another magazine with the upcoming anime. Don't get your hopes up.
--- Double Post Merged, ---

give Hokazono the Oda schedule already, jeez
Doesn't he already have it?

Manga that could've hit mainstream would do so even with late anime (given anime would be of good enough quality). Any other manga doesn't really miss much imo. Akane is a great manga don't get me wrong, I love it. Would it receive a bigger boost if anime released earlier? Yea, but i doubt it would break 60-70k mark. It's just too niche and anime while good visually really lost a lot compared to manga (inner monologues and stories resonating with each other during performances is what elevates manga for me personally). Would Sakamoto sell more if anime got released earlier? Not if the quality stays the same. Besides, Sakamoto never really grazed that "undisputed hit" territory CSM, JJK, MHA and Bachi had, to say it would go beyond with earlier anime, right? I might be wrong so feel free to correct me. All these manga lose some figures cause of late anime, sure, but they never really lose out on being mainstream or giga-hit status I feel like.

Sakamoto wouldn't have sold more even with an anime made by Mappa

I’m shocked people aren’t talking about animal signal getting called a massive hit. Guess we can count it safe? They don’t typically say that unless it is right? I think the only time that happened and an axe followed was Moriking?

If true and Numas series is successful then we will have 3 romcoms. Feels like we’d become WSM

Very excited for Ura no Report. Didn't expect Shun Numa returning so quickly. I am a bit disappointed that he's not doing the art, but I can understand why they might have thought his art wouldn't work for this kind of romcom. Plus, I can't be too upset about the choice of artist. If I'm being honest, the girl's design in the serialization is a huge improvement over the one-shot.

It kinda feels like the stars may have aligned for this series to succeed too. The magazine currently has quite a few series that are on their way out, either because of cancellation or coming to a natural conclusion. It is coming right off the heels of two established romcom series ending. It lines up with the Chojo anime for a chance at double promotion. Maybe its just my wishful thinking, but I really hope this is finally Shun Numa's big hit.

"Behind The Scenes Report" with Shun Numa (Super Psychic Policeman Chojo) writing & Yuushin Kuroki (Teenage Renaissance! David) drawing will start in the Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #40! The series is described as a coming-of-age romcom!

Holy shit aha. This is kind of a dumb anecdote, but Kuroki stopped taking art commissions like two months ago and I've been wondering basically the entire time when they would open up again. I think is probably why they stopped :scry At least I got a couple requests in beforehand.

What about Ichi, Blue Box and others?
I forgot to put "mainstream" before hit there, cause Sakamoto is 100% a hit, just isn't really a mainstream one.

Can't say much about Blue Box, as I never followed it, and it's hard for me to assess Ichi. Wouldn't call it undisputed mainstream hit, but should it receive good anime it'll obviously explode. Desscaras alone would be enough of a reason for this. However, for me personally Ichi lacks X factor to it. The cast seems good, as well as the trials system, tho I feel like it's underutilized a little, but something's missing. I remember people had a discussion about it a few days ago.

Anything else in the magazine right now shouldn't really worry about late anime, it wouldn't change a thing.
