I see, Shonen Jump is trying to ruin themselves lol

I saw this when I filled it out and hoped people don't spread the poll to try and make this happen. This happening would just mean that horribly mediocre series like Otr would be propped up and somehow live over actually good series, and the generic battle shonens would be pushed to the top. Bachi could put out like an absolute stinker of a chapter and those surveys would still be brigaded/botted because of fandom bias. (I've seen them brigade other surveys for the fun of it) As would any other fanbase that perceives that they were "slighted" by the magazine.

Hitoner's literally based on the most viral and popular Jump+ one-shots in the history of the service, they absolutely expected it to be a hit. And heck, Jump+ is doing way better than they were in 2023 when most of their series were flopping sales-wise, not just Hitoner, they also got Witchriv, Strikeout Pitch (which won Tsugi last year), Twilight Blade is starting strong, and Home on the Horizon's been growing quite a bit. You could say they aren't getting back their pandemic highs, but literally nothing's doing that.
I doubt when they released the one shot they expected it to hit, that's the thing. They push stuff like Mad, Centuria, Drama Queen, etc way more from the go and it quickly became the app's image, they're always eager to push stuff like that, it's easier to be so ahead in views when they're very fast promoted as major titles, but then Lemon, a classic style romcom, hits 100 chapters and they still rush it to an ending without anime. I doubt so many of their mangaka just happen to like the same specific things and go for similar tone, Jump+ looks completely alien to the rest of the online manga services, Pocket and Webry just have way more variety in styles and target audiences.

And even then, physical sales wise they're all mediocre, but J+ had a clear bigger decline than the rest even with the Jump brand basically giving them a major boost their rivals don't have. Considering the huge gap between the Jump and Magazine brands, Pocket is still very close in the number of active users.

I think they should consider the survey vote overseas but limit it. Similar to how the editors typically carry one series that doesn’t have impressive sales or ToC but the editors recognize is too quality to let go (Hinomaru Zumo, Undead Unluck, sort of Kiyoshi), I think having one series slot being a non JP hit but international darling would be good. I adored red hood and wish it got saved. Other potentially great series that could’ve been saved by international reception are series like GGG, Ginka Gluuna, Mamayuyu. Now granted, a series like Alien Headbutt that got some international love shouldn’t automatically get saved just because of that; some measure of domestic success needs to be met, but overall I think it could actually be healthy for the diversity of the magazine.
I think that is a good way to go about it. However I might have to agree to disagree with Red Hood thinking it was good. Even a few others were not good, but GGG, yes, it’s very good, amazing actually. So you’re not wrong but I do think if that was the case, there has to be careful consideration so that the voting system isn’t abused.

MangaPoke's viewership isn't competitive with Plus because people really love their roster. It's competitive because they serve different purposes, Jump+ is it's own thing with it's own roster. Only crossover they have with the physical sector of Shiueisha is special deals and Trial reading, which nobody really cares about. MangaPoke on the other hand is meant to be a digital platform for all Kodansha properties, they have their shoujo, the WSM titles, LN adaptations, etc. Of course MangaPoke has a high reader-base, people aren't there to read stuff like K-9 or Twilight Town, they're there to read Blue Lock, Shangri-la Fronteir, or Medalist. Whenever Jump merges with Plus its readerbase will likely double (won't happen until One Piece ends though). Just look at the sales of the new MangaPoke original hits, none of them touch Witchriv lol.

Also, Lemon's had declining sales and views from the jump, Centuria and MAD are growing, of course Plus will prioritize the latter two.

They also have their own hits that are often alongside or above their magazine hits there, like WInd Breaker, HanaBas, Gacha 9999, etc. Of course having the other series there help, but the Jump brand is much bigger than the Magazine brand even without the focus on WSJ titles. It's just easier to tell someone that likes Jump anime or manga to read Jump+ than for someone that likes Blue Lock to read the other Pocket series.

Sales wise they do better, but if you compare the average hit sales from before to now, J+ had a bigger decline in sales. They went from being able to release major mainstream titles to simply being a service that is only interested in appealing to a single target audience,

The era after the Shihei Lin hits clearly turned the service into something overly focused on what they see as "international" hits, so anything that leans niche or different is very rarely seen and poorly supported, this includes major genres like romcoms (heck, the service lacks even in classic bright battle manga). If it was about bringing variety to appeal to different publics or have more international authors, I would think of it as an interesting move, but in fact what happened is that specific styles, deemed as more mainstream-like, get some major bias from the editorial. My point is that I don't think Shueisha is above the idea of alienating their audience if Jump+ was already capable of doing that.

Also, Lemon's had declining sales and views from the jump, Centuria and MAD are growing, of course Plus will prioritize the latter two.
They were promoting these as major hits almost from the start even with awful sales. And again, they keep feeding things to the same audience over and over without pushing for variety. Lemon was already 100 chapters+ long, what is the harm in at least keeping it for fans of the genre that is barely supported there?

If you have a bunch of darker manga inspired by western movies, it's easier for the readers to already jump to the next one in the same style. Meanwhile they don't even try with a lot of genres or different audiences there. Almost nothing looks appealing to younger audiences, barely anything for the fujoshi audience that loves series like Wind Breaker, if someone wants fanservice it's easier to find at Corocoro than J+, fantasy adventure barely exists even though it's huge everywhere else, etc.

They don't only publish Western Cinema battle shonen though? Heck, Centuria is barely that, and Drama Queen is a different thing entirely. Strikeout Pitch and Girl Meets Rock are treated as pillars way more than Centuria and MAD, and one's a goofy spokon and the other is a girl band teen drama. They also have a decent amount of stuff for fujoshi and yumejoshi, Oblivion Battery is big with them, Kindergarten Wars got popular for the men, and there's also Twilight Blade that has a niche following with them. Shiba Inu Rooms is absolutely aimed for kids and there's the SpyxFamily shaped elephant in the room. They have some drama series, political thrillers, mecha, wrestling, and edgy series. MangaPoke seems more diverse because they run more series, but that oversaturation makes it hard for new series to stand out.

Jump+ was always going to decline, they were never going to go up from SpyxFamily, Kaiju no.8, and Dandadan, not even the main magazine can do that. MangaPoke is also down from Kaoru Hana and Wind Breaker with that logic, and they just lost Mii-chan to Yamada-san. I don't really think Jump+ is only running dark battle shonen and I don't think that people whining about Canon Master will change anything, Jump still runs series with fanservice after all. Also, I don't really know the situation on Lemon in terms of how natural the ending is, but it's not really unreasonable for it to never get animated, 2K sales and average views aren't really attracting investors like bees.

Jump+ run from 2019 to 2021 was crazy ngl but it especially stands out because of how massive SpyxFam is so anything in comparison is going to seem like a big decline.

Not "only", but it was shaped into the image of the service. Basically, it chases a type of tone neutrality that ends up being something closer to "prestige manga that can be appreciated outside Asia". There may be some variety inside that, but it's very low in comparison to all other magazines and services out there. I may sound like I'm exaggerating, but I genuinely think J+ is very grey and bland if you like several types of manga that they are clearly not interested in having or promoting. It creates a specific audience with lower interest range and that benefits the same type of works. You say Centuria isn't like that, but it's paired with Mad by fans all the time and the status they have is way bigger than the sales would imply.

For a service with 60 manga the variety is low. Girl Meets Rock is treated as a major hit because it managed that by itself, it literally started from Twitter and indies and I have a hard time thinking editorial would publish something like it without the homegrown popularity it had.

and there's the SpyxFamily shaped elephant in the room.
Because I don't consider it as part of this era. It's why I mentioned they were a service wide enough to create something like SxF and now they mostly feed a single target audience. In fact, SxF ending would be a "One Piece ends" major hit to J+.

I don't really think Jump+ is only running dark battle shonen and I don't think that people whining about Canon Master will change anything, Jump still runs series with fanservice after all.
It's not exactly only dark battle shonen, it's a lack of range and dislike of specific genres and the idea of niche. I have a hard time not seeing how they treat romcom and not thinking how it's so specific to the image J+ built over recent years. As for the fanservice point, if even Shinohara complained about how rigid they are, I do think they changed.

I don't know where you got the idea that Undead Unluck survived because editors thought it was too good to let it go, the series was popular from the 1st ranking lol

"I think having one series slot being a non JP hit but international darling would be good."

I really don't, why they should do that? We're not even paying for this, we read for free, also these series are not made for us, the idea of forcing a unpopular manga in Japan to stay on Jump because westerns on MP sounds like a recipe for disaster, it will piss off their readersbase in Japan since it's a manga that they don't support getting shoved down their throats while other they enjoy is potentially axed, it will also make the western community more unbearable that they already are with treating Jump mangas like a horse race, fanbases will get 10x more toxic with trying to influence/rig Manga Plus views/survey for their fave new series to survive and will hate even harder in the other series that survive, seriously i can't find a single positive thing on this :grin

Btw, you think a golf manga would have ben saved by westerns? LOL

Subscriber or not, it doesn't make difference, that's not the root of the potential problems.

Well, I did the survey. If I had been part of that conversation you just posted Shinuki, then I would never have voted for that suggestion.

lol you vote for what you want, it's not like they're going to implement these things tomorrow, they still haven't fixed their "page zoom" problem that i have complained for years in the surveys.

In terms of "only people with subs should be able to vote", I feel like that runs into an even bigger problem. Even ignoring how there's only 3 or 4 wsj series that have an average of 100k or more views (and then crazily enough, ignoring the "new" series, the next 3 after that are ichi at 75k, ruri at 40k, and somehow kiyoshi is the next most at 26k?), how many of these views are actually subscribers to mangaplus. And then how many of those subs will actually take the time to vote on these weekly surveys. It will just end up being a popularity contest, and between a small number of voters as well. I can't imagine it would really reflect the will of the average western jump reader, it'll probably be such a small sample size.

I agree to that. It was also something I remembered was mentioned in Bakuman with how they mentioned that the readers will have their favorites in the magazine that’s being published. The serious ones are those that fill out the surveys by reading from cover to cover. I think that was reflected back in the 90’s when Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk concluded and the magazine sales dropped as their readers went with them.

The banner version from WSJ Twitter:

Damn, this version makes Kagurabachi look even more in the back, also it's wild how Roku is already so big despite having ony 22 chapters, that's Someone Hertz level of fast upgrade. Ura also looks kinda bigger than the rest 🤔

Do you have something against Kagurabachi?

Bruh, Kagurabachi reduced to "newbie/flop" size :XD

DAMN! Kiyoshi is big (like tier 2/3 big) not like before 👀

Btw, i read Greykeith chapter 2 and... WOW! (WOW!)
A little spoiler: The Grim Reaper’s “love letter” that burns lifespan and turns written words into weapons… the fact that the author is using language not only as communication but as an actual weapon (and who knows what else) is INSANE!

I’m also really enjoying Kisaragi’s determination to become Graykeith’s assistant
