She has a plethora of armours and weapons, yet only 3 work. Ajeel said himself that a sword couldn't hurt him, implying that someone like Erza would have a tough time.
Her versatility allowed her to actually stand a chance. If she was a one trick pony she would have lost. Neptune allowed her to slash Ajeel as if he didn't have sand body is what I am saying (maybe it did more damage coz it's water??).
Compared to a wizard like Natsu, Laxus, Gray, Jellal... Erza suffers more disadvantages purely because of what Ajeel's magic can do. Below is also a reason why Erza matches up poorly...
Erza's wind slashes cleared a fair bit of sand, she even managed this in sandworld. But there is a clear difference between that AoE and something like what Natsu, or even Gray can do. This is not a blight on Erza, it's just that her attacks are concentrated. How much of a difference would this make? It depends. Against a small amount of sand I think AoE would have no real impact. Against something like Sands of Death it's pretty hard to stop that without something big.
When Natsu was standing on the forehead it looked say 15m wide, which I think looks less than the other FD fist. Effort, or at least MP used is different. This matters because as seen with FDK demolition fist he put a lot into it.

To cover the whole of Sandworld is an extraordinary roar. It would be a lot bigger than anything he has done.
Yes Say He used 5% of his Energy to destroy Ant pit He told Gajeel that He is using 0.01 of his Base Energy So we can assume if he uses 15% of His Base Energy He can destroy Sand World.
Base natsu is clearly not above ajeel he's only above him in bdkm and df i think, And i don't see how base natsu would beat ajeel when he use sand world.

He is using his so called 0.01 against fodder and Bakel isn't he? I don't see why we need to include this, plus he's pretty much just having a petty argument with Gajeel rather than being specific about his energy use.
Is it right to assume that Natsu can just keep roaring harder so that he can cover Sandworld? Tbh I think he'd use his dragon senses to find Ajeel, rather than try and destroy sandworld.
Edit: When I say poorly, I mean this in the sense that she doesn't stack up equally like others do; a water/wind wizard might stack up favourably. Basically in FT match-ups and strategy is not as important as MP and abilities. So the match-up issue is not as big as I am probably writing it down as. But I do believe it puts Erza a little behind the 8-ball compared to other wizards.

So what if only 3 techniques worked against ajir? It's not like he countered them or anything, they were swords and armor. For most people that would be stuff which they based entire fighting styles around and for erza is it just one of her billion powers. Erza doesn't even need 3 things that are effective to be at an advantage, she needs only one at that. In terms of weakeness and strengths erza is the one here who has the advantage, it is erza's magic that ultimately has ajir at a disadvantage. Sure, ajir cane erode some swords. But erza still has swords that specifically counter sand and armors capable of hurting him (if it was all swords then erza wouldn't have hurt him with any).
I think the AOE is sort of a moot point. Erza does not need to counter all the sand and I would argue that doing something against the entire sand world is impossible. What she did on her own pretty much worked anyways. And unlike against grey or natsu ajir did eventually go all out unlike when they stopped his attacks where he was pretty much holding back.

I edited my original post as I felt my use of the word poorly might have not quite illustrated what I really meant, and that is she doesn't match up as well as others do (poorly as a subjective term implies she's suffering significant disadvantage).
So what if only 3 swords worked? She can't use some of her powerful requips, like Armadura or Benisakura (seriously she couldn't use red pants!). I do concede that 3 might be enough, but not being able to make contact with most of her requips is at least noteworthy.
I disagree with Ajeel being at a disadvantage. Natsu, Laxus etc can deal damage just like Erza can when she uses Neptune/Nakagami. She has no advantage over other people to fight Ajeel, she's limited to 2 options. You wrote a bit in brackets at the end of the quote which I would re-word as this "if all swords could work against Ajeel it would be like fighting anyone else who can be hit by swords"

It's a moot point if we're talking about small amounts of sand, or sandworld which seems too big. But against Sands of Death or Sand Monster Erza is at a disadvantage compared to Gray/Natsu simply because their magic is suited to it. @bold - this is true, but Ajeel couldn't use some of his moves in the air (too high up for sands of death, Sand monster is bigger than the ship).
Current Base Natsu is a city buster with HS+ combat speed. He takes this handily since he has shown to vaporize Ajeel's sand, rendering Sand World useless, he's shown that he can bypass his intangibility and Ajeel doesn't have enough durability for FDK Roar or Fist.
If Natsu can't use DF here, I'll give this to Ajeel. Natsu can certainly put up a heck of a fight, but ultimately I don't see him being able to overcome Ajeel. Even though Natsu burnt his way out sand pit, the scale of that spell and sand world are vastly different and one has to consider Ajeel was playing around in Alvarez. Base Natsu is inferior to the spriggans imo. He can put up a great fight and probably almost win but I don't think he can pull it off. Even in Ajeel vs Erza, that fight would've been Erza's loss if Ajeel hadn't been so cocky.
Ajeel should win. Natsu is extremely overrated in this forum.
Sand storm should keep Natsu at bay, before Ajeel uses a good finisher to knock Natsu out
Leaning on mid-diff.
We really won't be able to tell until Natsu fights a Spriggan. I think it's safe to say that Ajeel has more power than base Natsu, because he got a reaction from his arm against him. I see that as Igneel's power acting out in self defense. That being said, I think Natsu would give Ajeel a much harder time than Erza did. Sand World might be able to blind Natsu, but there are two ways Natsu can get around that. One is simply using his nose to sniff out Ajeel, like Gajeel suggested. The other is to use FDK spells like Demolition Fist and just smash the ground. Since the explosion that follows is pretty much 1/3 the size of a town, if Ajeel is standing anywhere near Natsu when that happens he'll get hit. It would also temporarily clear his vision. He won't be able to clear away all of sand world, but it would be a large enough area for him to get his bearing.
Based on hype and merit, Ajeel should win. Ajeel gave Erza a tough time to a point that she needed Bisca's shooting canon to help her out. I don't see Natsu ever capable of dominating Erza the same way Ajeel did.
