Yeah. It could be both. King Il s future plans could come into play, but also the deeds King Il committed in the past. Soo Won at least believes that King Il is the murderer of his father and I don t remember him ever asking as to why King Il killed his father.
So both could be a reason, why he detests the gods so much,if that could have lead to his father dying maybe. But that is of course purely a speculation on my part.

I see. Thank you. So the knowledge Soo Won collected didn t just stem from books.
yesss ofcourse SW didn't get his knowledge with just some books alone ..he needs to explore and experience different kinds of things and that's part of learning and glad he did it.. even now that he's a king he still wonder outside the palace and it's very rare for a king to go outside the palace.. that's why he had to sneak out sometimes just to gather information.. a very good aspect for a KING! :)

maybe his father died because of that power of gods/dragons about the prophecy or something and SW knew about that.. that's why he doesn't need the power of gods/dragons to save the country or idk because he needs to do something before he dies :( (well that's what he said back then)..

I think all three - Il, Yu-Hon and Ju-Nam are shady.

-From the sequence of events we understand that the priests were driven out during Ju Nam's reign by Yu-Hon.
-But for some reason Il got chosen as the King.

If we think about why, one reason could be that , as stated above, Ju-Nam heard about a prophecy which stated that Yona is Hiryuu.

But then why drive out the priests if you want Hiryuu to rule a generation later?

If the above is indeed true, it could be that Ju-Nam regretted driving the priests out his death bed, and pronounced Il as King and wanted Yona to be the beacon who once again reinstates priesthood and religion in Kouka. Maybe he was seeing Yu-Hon becoming mad with blood lust (example Xing) after all the priests were driven out.

Another thing- it is interesting why Soo-Won chose Yona's birthday to assasinate Il.

Maybe, just maybe, Il was about to reveal everything to Yona that night - on her birthday - that she is Hiryuu and his plans to get religion and priesthood back into Kouka. And Soo-Won was completely against it because his father was against it. I don't know. The reasons could be many, and I hope we find out soon!
all the priests were driven out 'coz the priests has the right/ability to kill a bad/incompetent king (as stated in the manga/anime) so to avoid that they had to chased them out.. I wonder if the priests were still on the palace during king il's reign and maybe just maybe they will be the one to kill king il since the country were on stake during his reign..

Yes, it is a good question if Ju Nam gave Il the throne, because of the prophesy. However, if Ju Nam didn’t give Yu-hon the throne just because Yu-hon was the one to banish the priests, then it would be unfair. It would be practically impossible for Yu-hon to kick out priests from his father’s palace without his father’s consent.

And if Yu-hon had been doing stuff without his father’s consent, then it would not be so surprising for people why he didn’t get the throne.
Another thing- it is interesting why Soo-Won chose Yona's birthday to assasinate Il.
I suppose he just choose the best time when he would be in the palace without raising anyone’s suspicions.

It seemed that he didn’t spend a lot of time there and he reacted rather strangely when Yona stormed into his room before her birthday when she felt that someone is chasing her. It looked like Su-won expected to be attacked and since Il killed his father he might have feared that Il will try to get rid of him too. I suppose that may also be the reason why he didn’t spend much time in the castle.

As for why Ju Nam choose Il, I don’t know, maybe he didn’t want to be overshadowed by the more capable son, so he deliberately choose Il knowing full well that he will not overshadow him and that will make people remember him as the better King.

Or there is also a possibility that Ju Nam didn’t actually choose Il and Il, for example, falsified the testament or something like this to become the King, because some priest told him that his daughter is/will be Hiryuu's reincarnation, so he came to the conclusion that the throne should be his as he is the father of the kid that possess the soul of the legendary King. However, Yu-hon found it out, so Il killed him to silence him.

It is true, that a prophecy or Yona s birth may have influenced that decision, if the outcome, should King Junan not follow the predetermined path, had been horrendous.
But it is not like the decision of King Junam is a direct consequence of the presence of a prophecy. It s not like
prophecy+ Yona being born = King Junam s decision.

There is still the will of the king, named Junam.

At least if we consider Soo won s own mindset. Soo Won seems to be a person who tends to rational decisions. He wishes for the power of human beings and he is going actively against the gods. He chose not to follow the predetermined path.

So if he himself is able to ignore any prophecy/Yona being the reincarnation, why should he absolve his grandfather? If he really considered the gods influence that big, wouldn t it go against his belief that the gods are just merely watching.

My conclusion is that Soo Won would suffer from a certain bias, if that should be true. I mean that would be really humane, to have unresolved feelings and having them cloud your brain.
That is why I consider your explanation still pretty plausible.
This is why I keep talking about indirect influence. Let's try an example - let's say that one afternoon, there's unexpectedly a heavy rain, and a girl gets caught in it and runs into a cafe. And there's a guy working there, you know, and he's alone and the rain is long, so they talk a lot and find out that they like similar things, and then they date each other, and years later they marry each other. Now asked about "How come you two got to know each other?" the girl would say, laughing, "Oh, it was because of that rain!" Is their marriage a direct consequence of the rain? Hell no. But they would still think that if not for the rain, they wouldn't even know each other, so the rain was one of the causes. In the same way, in Su-won's mind gods could be to blame for Junam's decision. It doesn't mean that he doesn't blame Junam too. Heck, it doesn't even necessarily mean that he's right blaming gods, there's a possibility that with Yu-hon as the king, Kouka would've been worse off. I was just trying to explain what I think is his mindset, not what's objective truth in the manga.

But of course much more important factor, I gather, would be Il's complacence, on which I wrote above.

And I actually think that him partially blaming gods for his grandfather's decision is why he thinks that they only watch. I mean, he saw Junam going along with their will - choosing Il - and despite that Kouka fell into ruin. Gods didn't do anything (other than causing the mess in the first place, at least in Su-won's mind), and Il thought that he didn't need to do anything because his daughter was Hiryuu (I know, it's a stretch from such a small flashback, so consider it a guess. But educated one! ;) ). So nobody was doing anything, just waiting for the gods, until eventually Su-won decided to do the opposite of Junam and took actions himself - as we know.

And I'll repeat: I'm just trying to get into his possible mindset, I'm not saying that he's right. If gods are all-knowing, then it can even be presumed that 1) Kouka with Yu-hon on the throne would've been worse off and/or 2) They knew that Su-won would take action and set the country on a better course in the end. It's also possible that 3) Gods are less potent than Su-won thinks and didn't decide when Hiryuu should be reborn.

Though I feel like 2) isn't that probable, considering that the Heavens are presumably on Yona's side (Zeno's words), which, at least to me, implies that whatever Yona decides to do, she'll have their support. What if she decided to become a cruel dictator, would that work too? Just some food for thought, we'll never know ;D

There was this scene where the dragon gods wanted to kill people, because people hurt Hiryuu, so I think it is safe to assume that they would help Yona no matter what she decided to do.

As for the dragon gods, I don’t think they are so powerful and omnipotent, omnipresent, etc. like the God of Christians. The Gods imagined by ancient people where vindictive and had plenty of flaws and it seems that the dragons are like them.

Guess so, though I remember reading that dragons were highly regarded in ancient Korea, and considered the bringers of water, or something along these lines (I'm no expert, so take me with a huge grain of salt). Still, I think there's a lot more gods in the mythologies than just the dragons, whereas in AnY only the dragons are mentioned; we don't even know what Xing's gods are supposed to be like, and if they actually exist (while with Kouka's dragons we can assume that yes, seeing the Dragon Warriors and Yona). So I'm presuming that the dragons are supposed to be kinda more powerful and wise, than, say, your average god from Greek mythology. Not saying they're omnipotent... Ehh, I kinda wish there had been more on the subject in the manga :/

Yes it is true that he might have had consent while driving out the priests. But Ju-Nam could have regretted it later. Lots of people become more religious as they grow older, including Kings.

Il presenting a false statement...I think there would have been others around when he declared his heir right? Including Yu-Hon.

I think author is presenting a red-herring on either Yu-Hon or Il. We will just have to see which one or if they both are equally bad.

A possibility is a possibility and nothing more.
a) If he wishes to go against them and he wishes to think, that the gods won t interfere. The people have a free will to decide or else they would just be the puppets of the gods.
b) but on the other hand he considers them fully responsible, because of a prophecy they provided the human beings with and his grandfather fully innocent.

Soo Won values the free will of the people, their power and responsibility, but negates it for his grand-father. That is not rationale.
You said "in his mind". Correct. It would be an irrationale estimation of the past. A bias.
And that is exactly, what I was saying!

Honestly I would be a little glad, if Soo Won is not 100 % right concerning the past, King Il ect...It would make him a little more humane and not so perfect.

But of course much more important factor, I gather, would be Il's complacence, on which I wrote above.

I don t have anyhting against your theory, I think your story is fairly plausible. Soo Won wouldn t be rational, but that would be pretty understandable considering his relation to Yu hon and the past events.

Another reason could be that they wished for Yona to go find the dragon warriors and fulfill her destiny. Many people would die in the process, but we cannot be sure, if the mindset of the gods is not similar to the dragon gods, who don t value the lives of humanity.

I think at least the murder of King Il could be partially destiny, since Yona just appeared at the right time, at the right place to witness the murder.
They survive a fall, that should have killed them...Mundoek knowing where to find a priest...That is the odor of fate...

Yeah...they have to be more gods than the Dragon Gods, since Zeno told Kouren that the dragon gods could bring the heaven to ally with them, which would implicate the presence of more heavenly beings than the dragon gods.

It could be, but then it would still be unfair. Ju Nam had every power to stop it and if he didn’t want it to happen, then I seriously doubt that Yu-hon would have enough power to carry out something like this. Yu-hon most probably just carried out his father’s orders, not to mention that it would not be strange if it turned out that it was Ju Nam’s idea in the first place.
Il presenting a false statement...I think there would have been others around when he declared his heir right? Including Yu-Hon
Yu-hon could have been somewhere else when it happened, in the middle of some campaign or something. And if Il used shady ways to take the throne, he may as well have killed his father and then make it look like an accident when Yu-hon was not around to make things easier for himself.
I think author is presenting a red-herring on either Yu-Hon or Il. We will just have to see which one or if they both are equally bad.
While I think Yu-hon will have flaws and will not be a paragon of virtues, I expect that the juiciest revelations will be about Il for the sole reason that it only makes sense to present revelations at the climax of the story that will fire in the main character’s face and it would be bad writing to make great revelations that would fire at the supporting character’s face at the climax of the story.

Kusanagi has been keeping the past as a secret for so long that I don’t think she intends to reveal it at any other time than the climax of the story.

Besides, what would be better than Yona learning that her father, in addition to being an awful King, was not so great person, especially for his brother and nephew? I would totally go this way and choose the most shocking and acute revelations for the main character if I were the author.

See, the thing is, the situation is neither a or b. It's in between. The gods give people free will (presumably), but at the same time they actively meddle with the world's affairs by providing prophecies, having Hiryuu influence the course of history, etc. So even though technically humans can do whatever they want, they are still under influence of the gods' words.

Again I'll try with the example. Let's say that I give you a mathematical equation to solve, but I also provide you with a possible but difficult to find on your own way of solving it. It may be right or wrong; I'm telling you it's the right one. Now, sure, you can do whatever you want, but I wonder if you won't at least check my solution out before trying your own? And of course, if I didn't give you the solution, you'd try another way, most likely a different one. Now, this is just me telling you, and we're presumably on the same level. But what if it was a super genius mathematical professor suggesting you which way of solution to choose? Wouldn't you listen? And if his solution was wrong, would you still be 100% to blame for the failure? Sure, you could've taken another way and solve the equation correctly, but it was a guy who's supposedly the best mathematical mind on the planet telling you how to do it! Isn't he, like, at least 10% to blame for your mistake? Especially if you're certain that without his words, you'd have solved the problem in a different way.

See, Su-won himself chose after witnessing what Junam's choice brought about. Junam didn't know it; he's a human, he's supposed to be much less wise than the gods, even if they aren't all-knowing. Su-won's rationale would go like this:

Gods decided that Hiryuu should be reborn into Yona -> My grandfather trusted the gods and heeded their will, and decided to make Il king because of Yona -> The country fell into ruin and gods didn't prevent that -> I'm not going to trust the gods anymore, I'm going to make my own path (plus I hate gods, because they caused my grandfather to choose wrongly).

I don't see a contradiction, and still the root cause is the gods' will. Of course, this is all assuming that Yona being Hiryuu's reincarnation was a factor.

-

I mean, that's a little beside the point, but there's been discussion that perhaps Hiryuu didn't want to be a ruler in his next life. If so, why was he reborn into a princess? Why not any other girl, or a common boy? Even assuming that he wanted a comfy childhood and education, then why not a lesser noble, e. g. the Fire General's family, or someone like Lily?

Presumably. But let s try to express it like this: As long as human beings have options to choose, the responsibility for their decisions is still theirs to face.
If I mean free will, I refer to the fact, that we are the last instance. We decide if, when or how to give into an influence or not.
As long as there is a person, who acted differently given the same circumstances, there seems to be an option.

Isn't he, like, at least 10% to blame for your mistake? Especially if you're certain that without his words, you'd have solved the problem in a different way.
That is a nice example. Unfortunately I am a person who would try it out myself, since my experiences taught me, that I get the best solutions this way. Even if I should fail, then I can still look at the solution. But your example is a good one. Even if he has a minor responsibility, I would have been the one to cheat, because in the last instance. It was me, making a bad decision.

Experiences and knowledge we acquire are a stable tools to analyse the different influences, we meet along the way. And that would be one of the reasons, why I think Soo Won would not be objective and rational.
Let me further delve into the topic at the next section.

See, Su-won himself chose after witnessing what Junam's choice brought about. Junam didn't know it; he's a human, he's supposed to be much less wise than the gods, even if they aren't all-knowing. Su-won's rationale would go like this:
King Junam made the decision to choose King Il instead of Yu hon. Coming back at the tools of our minds: Knowledge and experience.
King Junam was king at least for 7 years, since we know that the war with Xing happened 17 years ago. Likely he had even more time as the king of Kouka.
King Junam was likely to be the oldest son, or at least the heir of his father, which would mean, he must have gained a fairly good amount of useful knowledge how a king should be.
We can also assume that he was most likely not an utter fool, since his reign was considered rather beneficial for the people of Kouka.

So King Il had knowledge and experience. His task was to name a successor.
King Junam knew both options, because they were his sons. He should have been able to estimate their characters. If he was not able to perform that trick, it is his fault, since he hadn t made an effort into knowing them sufficiently for that task.

Most likely he already made up his mind, since he could see this task coming miles away. Also in case a bad king should be chosen, it is not unlikely with the system reigning in Kouka with the 5 Generals, that an insurrection should occur, if King Junam should fail.

Then there is this prophecy, we both assume to exist.
Now King Junam is in the position: If his knowledge and experience told him....Choose Yu hon, but the gods tell him...Choose King Il.
I am going for Yu hon as the logical solution, since everybody else considered it a natural cause, that the intelligent Sky General Yu hon should lead...but I might be wrong.

There are two influences, King Junam has to consider. He chose to listen to the gods, instead of his own gut (institution),mind, experience, knowledge.

Just in the case, where nearly all influences point in one direction, King Junam would have been not to blame...Who knows?

Also he knew the priests, and decided to get rid of them...which means, that he couldn t be too religious. I wonder, what changed that...

Another point to consider. Wouldn t Soo Won try to hold it against Yona? Because of Yona everything went wrong...For a long time, he just considered her a sister, a person he cared about in the past.
Just after Soo Won is experiencing the might of the dragon warriors, does it change...

Well I assume, if the dragon gods just share a similar mindset to the dragon gods, they don t hold human beings in high regards...While Yona is a reincarnation of a god.
Also Yona was spoiled until the murder of King Il, so she was well off. But in case Soo won should claim the throne, King Hiryuu should become active, not because they liked human beings, but King Hiryuu obviously did it.

Phew, I'm glad that we came to an understanding, I guess?

That's an interesting point, but I think it would be hard for him to blame a little girl for everything? Especially since she wasn't even informed that she's Hiryuu. She didn't make any decision. So I guess that there might've been a little "if you hadn't been there, things would've gone differently" at the back of Su-won's mind, but not necessarily. Depends how much he actually liked her - and I guess by now we can assume that he did and does care for her from what was shown in the manga - and also if he's the type of person to blame someone for being born.

since Gobi is still alive and unhurt.... what do you think is he gonna do next?
yeah sure he aint gonna be around for the negotiations but i dont think hes the type to just back down. will he still be after the 4 dragons and yona/hiryuu? i just think hes gonna be in cahoots with keishuk... since theyre birds of the same feather.

—just got my answer... the last chapter of the xing arc will be in 150... its like we’ve waited all this time for the conference and its only gonna be happening in 20 pages... underwhelming...

This is an interesting point, though I still feel that women hardly have any power to rule in Kouka unlike Xing. Fact is she was born as a princess and was told her sole purpose will be to marry someone (at least that's what Il kept telling her), and had no thoughts to rule the country. If it was a male heir, then they would be trained to rule since childhood.

In fact, she STILL doesn't have any thoughts to rule the country. So her being a princess or lesser noble or common man wouldn't change that. Though, because she is a princess, she still had some factors that helped her reach her position right now. Like Hak wouldn't have been around her, and she wouldn't have had connections with the Wind Tribe and Tae-Jun. We can also see that now she has revealed herself as a princess and people are holding her in higher regard as their saviour (water tribe). I feel, in order to do something influential for the country, it could be that Hiryuu wanted to be born in an influential/noble position at the very least - who had connections to nearly everyone in Kouka.

In all honestly though, we don't know what the situation would have been if Soo-Won didn't kill Il. If in this case, Il propositioned Yona to rule Kouka as a religious head, then would she have listened? Would the Hiryuu inside her wanted this?

Well, I suppose that Soo-jin would take over the throne and Yona would be either killed or forced to marry him to legitimize his rule. From what we know from the manga it seems to be the most probable what if scenario where Su-won does not kill Il.

And there is this that he wanted her to marry and choose the next King himself, so I don’t think that he wanted her to rule. The interesting question is to whom he wanted marry her? He didn’t want to marry her to Su-won, so who he had in mind? Hak? Or did he plan to give her to someone else like Li-Hazara or the King of Kai in exchange of not invading Kouka? This last option would be quite interesting.

Could il really afford to marry off hiryuu incarnate to some foreigner? This is hiryuu we’re talking about and on top of that king il knew her identity all along.

I think a citizen of kouka who’s ideologies/philosophy similar to il would be a likely candidate.
Hak, maybe. Or some character who hasnt been introduced yet.

Yeah Yona wasn't prepared to rule over Kouka as she was never trained or given an indication that she was supposed to be bothered to rule. That's why I wonder if Il had offered her role as a religious head of state, to suppose, get priesthood back into Kouka, would Yona agree or would her inner Hiryuu make her say no? Not a ruler, but a relgious symbol. She could have been used as a tool to get religion back by Il. Just a thought. Maybe Il never really wanted to marry her off and was just saying that to her for the sake of it. Don't know. If he did want to marry her off, why be so excited that she is Hiryuu and say she is different from Soo-Won?

It could be that Soo-Won proposed to Il that he should marry Yona and then legally be king, but maybe Il vehemently refused because he wanted Yona to never marry and just be a religious symbol. That's why above all things, Soo-Won was driven to kill Il, as he shares his fathers ideals of not relying on supernatural powers and that has been discussed above, he felt it would not do any good to Kouka. It would be nice if they showed that Soo-Won did indeed try other options before assassinating Il and avenging his father did not cloud his judgement. And like others have said before, maybe he would have married Yona after killing Il but because Yona saw everything, he had to drive her away.

Yeah, me too.
my guess is, that Soo Won didn t wish to believe in neither the gods nor the fact, that Yona is the reincarnation of King Hiryuu. Or to be more precise, he didn t want to care about it.
It could just be me imaging a situation...but I wonder, if Soo Won harboured more negative feelings towards Yona, when he remembered that scene.
It is possible that his disdain was all reserved for King Il...but I still wonder about it...

Also King Il I would like to know what existed first: King Il being religious, that is the reason Yona was born as his daughter or
King Il became a true follower of the gods after the reincarnation of King Hiryuu had appeared in his family.

I don’t know. It is hard to say what Il thought. Maybe he thought that it will be all right, since she is Hiryuu and that she will somehow be able to dominate her husband because of it.

Maybe he planned something like this, but the problem I see here is that there are no hints that he planned such a move.

Anyway, I think Xing arc can be summed up, because it will end in the next chapter, which I doubt will be a game changer in this situation.

So this arc is here to give Yona a diplomatic victory just like I thought. Meh. I hope at least there will be consequences to Yona’s actions like revealing her identity, which can be used against her or against Kouka. It is a nice pretext to start a war with Su-won\Kouka.

The arc would have been more satisfying if the obstacles had not been overcome mostly with luck, people overhearing stuff by accident or appearing in the right place at right time to save Yona. She made use of her relation with Tea-jun, but the whole plan was very risky and can very easily lead to a war with Li-Hazara. I wonder if this will be addressed at all? If Il had agreed to marry Yona to Li-Hazar in exchange of him not invading Kouka, he may even use the info that Yona is still alive and claim that he is doing it for his poor fiancée and for this reason he is going to depose from the Kouka throne the usurper, Su-won.

I don’t think that we can say that she made use of her relationship with Lily, since Yona never intended to use Lily to rescue her out of troubles. It was just a pure luck on Yona’s side that Lily was there to help her.

And then Gobi appeared with his inept plan of overthrowing Kouren that was a huge help to Yona, since it basically saved Yona form finding a way to convince Kouren.

Overall, it was an underwhelming arc. In the previous arc Yona was able to do something, because she put an effort to learn something like archery earlier, but not this time, so the achievement of making the peace talks happen feels rather undeserved.

I somehow fear, that we won t get to see much of the negotiations, since the next chapter will be definitely the last chapter of this arc.
Maybe just maybe there really will be an event that catapults Yona and her crew into the next arc. Kai is next. I am a little excited. Most likely South Kai, since they seemed to meddle more in Kouka than the North....

I hope not!
But im preparing for the worst... if they wanna do It similarly to the sei arc... as in dont show the actual negotiations just mention the outcome in passing, in the later chapters.
Very disappointing to say the least.

I wanna see a change in setting... as in take a boat to south kai through jeahas connections. land expiditions are becoming boring.
