chap 169 gives off some sei vibes wherein a handful of kouka soldiers was able to defeat 1000 soldiers only this time around hak is a one man army making his way to kuervo. I do not like this development.
Neither me.

Kouka's win so early is a boring development, but it does not seem like we are going to get anything else.

Is it too much to ask for kouka to just lose... just this once?
It seems yes. I guess Hak failing to save his beloved Yona is out of question.

This chapter(169) is truly magnificent:spaz No words can describe how prodigious Hak was in this chapter. To have Kye-sook say how truly stupendous you're is quite the feat:hi
Moreover, Tae-jun has won the laurels for this brilliantly perceptive chapter :XDAlso, his interactions with Hak was, by no means of exaggeration, the delineation of Su-won's and Hak's relationship could have been :crying

I liked the chapter! It's was a good way to show how formidable Soo-Won and Hak would have been as a team. Kusanagi's strong point has always been conveying emotions. She really does it so well. How Hak himself didn't want Soo-Won in his head but he came nonetheless.

I am still disappointed how it seems Kuervo will not be a challenge and that our heroes will be victorious so quickly again, but I agree. This flashback is good. The best part of this chapter.

I wonder if our heroes will ever face a villain/antagonist who can have remarkable achievements and thwart their plans.

Ok. So regarding 170... why do i feel like gobi’s gonna do some damage and end up hurting kuelbos first wife in the process? Or hes just gonna take yona to the battlefield and that dragon shield is gonna pop up coz hes gonna do somethin to trigger it?

I really dont understand the dragons... cant zeno secretly whisper to shin ah to locate yun so that he can just rescue him since hes already in dragon mode? They may be under surveillance but i doubt those turi soldiers are fast enough to relay orders to kill yun if zeno decides to jump and take him. Yona is practically safe since shes goddess of war. Aint nobody touchin her.

I've only seen some spoilers of 170 but you know what... Right now I personally don't feel like Kuelbo will turn out to be a real villain at all.
To me he seems like (more blonde, foreign and wild but still) Geun-Tae that truly cares for his tribe and enjoys battles. His sister's (assumed) murder makes him angry at Kai and drives him to war to bring success to his tribe. He didn't give much shit about Hazara, and prioritized his own soldiers safety. He has treated the dragons and Yona relatively well, which means he just wants every strong individual to join his side. He has a loving wife and loyal followers.
That's a good amount of character backstory packed in a few moments, whereas we got basically none from Gobi/Hiyou/Kumji and some other pure evil antagonists before. All in all I get similar vibe from him as Kouren when we first got to know her. But he will still probably fight with Hak in the next ch.

Instead I can see Hazara and Gobi becoming (again) the real problems of this arc. As well as any new characters like the emperor of Kai/whoever is behind the murdered sister -case, if that's what the HHB group goes out to solve next. Yona meeting Kuelbo's wife could hint that at least they could cooperate in future somehow.
Anyhow, this arc has had really good Hak-moments, I think his character is well (or possibly best) designed out of them all. But I'm still waiting for some actual diplomatic/leading action from Yona, not just acting brave or getting special treatment because of the dragons/resembling the tully tribe princess. :D

Right? It makes no sense. I thought they could have plotted themselves out of it, but now it seems like the author just wants to keep them occupied for the sake of the plot...

It is a terribly disappointing turn of events. Another great victory for our heroes. :eyeroll

Is making them experience a serious defeat for a damn change so much to ask?

And all this talking that Kuervo was undefeated. Seriously, I don't care if Kuervo had been undefeated until he met our always victorious heroes. I wanted him to stay undefeated after he met them. At least for some time and after some battles with them.

And give me a break from this kidnapping shit! No more kidnapping please!

Can Yona do something out of her own initiative for once? Like check on South Kai after hearing that they can be Kouka's trouble? Investigate what Su-won told her about his father being murdered by Il? Anything at all?

Seriously, this arc Yona gets kidnapped.
Xing arc Yona gets kidnapped by Tao, only it turn outs Tao is a good person.
Sei arc Yona gets kidnapped.

Yona please do show some initiative for once and don't start an arc by getting kidnapped!

I personally don't care if they ever suffer a "defeat", i just hope the kidnapping plotlines are over. In this case, I don't know what having them lose here would advance story wise, so the quicker it's over the better. I just hope the next arc doesn't include a single kidnapping!

also, any link or description of the spoilers? I can't find them on my google searches.

Making our heroes lose would make the story:
First of all, a bit more unpredictable. In the end it is going to be a success story for them, but this does not mean that they should win every battle and never experience a serious defeat.

Secondly, this is boring, because an unbroken string of success is boring, makes the story super predictable and leaves no space for tension. Why should I give a damn about heroes' circumstances if they are always successful? And indeed I don't care about Yona much, even though initially I liked her better.

Thirdly, a defeat is perfect for character development. Would they break down because something didn't go well and as they wanted or would they gain a lesson from the defeat and be prepared better next time/gain a necessary skill, etc.? Even if they initially felt dispirited, even better, the author could show how they learn to deal with defeats.

Also, It would add at least a bit variety to this story.

It would make their struggle look more realistic if they were experiencing defeats.

It would be easier to make villains who don't suck! Gobi is lame and now it turns out that Kuervo is also a disappointment who loses a battle, because he cares about some teenage romance.

Not to mention that the fact that making heroes constantly winning is very Mary Sueish.

I believe this is enough to show that a defeat can be good in a story and give development to characters.

What I am really liking about Hak's character is his obvious flaws.

I have always liked him from the start, but his subtle character development is making me like him even more.

We can see he is always in a paradox....to love Yona or to think of her as a princess and control his love....to be patriotic about Kouka or to not care about Kouka....to think about Soo-Won as a fond memory or to hate him with a passion....to take responsibility or to throw it all away.....I always felt his character had so much potential to develop and thankfully we are seeing it now.

I think out of the characters he is very relatable....except for the super strong 1000 soldiers worthy part lol. His personality is easy-going yet hyper at times, he likes to indulge in things like Sake and fun times but when he is serious no one else can beat him in seriousness. He also interestingly always puts others before himself, may it be the dragons, Yona, Yoon or the wind tribe...even though he has such an intimidating aura...and sometimes this becomes a really big flaw because he does more than what he is able to and has almost died (well in a more realistic manga with a better villain he would have died 5 times over by now), so he really needs to think things through.

Anyway waiting to see how his relationship with Soo-Won fares because apart I feel it is the most interesting dynamic in the manga - my Hak Yona shipping heart aside lmao.

Maybe the foreshadowing is pointing towards a reconciliation.

:: chap 172
Gobi is so weird. He and his henchmen can overpower the estate guards but cant overcome yona in shackles.
And hak... woah... he can still sit up straight and ride a horse despite his injuries... zeno 2.0?

Initially, basing from the spoilers on the title, i thought Kuelbo would make a comeback or somethin’ but no thats not the case at all. I am now impatiently waiting for this arc to end and move on from gobi or kuelbo. I have yet to understand the purpose of this arc in the grand scheme of things other than establishing hak as authority bec he saved the day.

Yona, Hak and the dragons enemies can only be competent and capable if they are not facing Yona and co.

I think this can be written down in the story as a law by now.
Once Yona and co. face enemies, enemies competence, intelligence and luck shell immediately disappear and they, the enemies, shell be prone to foolish actions, stupid mistakes, irrational and incomprehensible decisions and terribly bad luck.

Initially, basing from the spoilers on the title, i thought Kuelbo would make a comeback or somethin’ but no thats not the case at all.
I thought it might be a possibility, but since this manga keeps being disappointing, I expected that this desperate situation in the tittle refers to Yona and co. situation and will be nothing interesting.

It would be nice, but the big question is will the next enemy be less terrible these ones? Villains are fools who have no chance to beat the heroes in this manga. Hak and the dragons cannot be beaten in a fair battle, because they are ridiculously overpowered.

I have yet to understand the purpose of this arc in the grand scheme of things other than establishing hak as authority bec he saved the day.
I am afraid that making Hak the big hero in people's eyes was the whole point of this arc and this will be all there will be to it.

(can you guys link to the spoilers? they aren't easily found by Google).

In terms of the point of this arc, I don't think Soo-Won or his crew have seen the Dragons fight, so they didn't know yet that they really did have mystical powers. And now his inner circle knows this, and they know that they aren't "bad" since they helped repel the attack from outside of the country. I think it's about planting seeds, giving characters information, etc. Kuelbelo was never going to take over the nation, so this arc always felt a little unnecessary from that perspective.

Maybe, I would still appreciate if it was done in a way that doesn't kill tension and doesn't make the heroes look like a bunch of undefeatable Mary Sues.

Also, I am not sure how this helps. I suppose the thing Keishuk and the Sky soldiers who took part in the coup are most afraid of is that Yona wants to take revenge on them for killing her father. If they see that Hak and the dragons do what she asks them to do, they will have more reasons to be wary of her and may want to eliminate her. They may easily think that the four dragons help was part of her plan to take back the throne and gain loyalty of Fire tribe before starting a war with Su-won.

I don't really see them feeling more easy unless Yona renounces her claims to the throne.

Kuelbelo was never going to take over the nation, so this arc always felt a little unnecessary from that perspective.
Yeah and this is a big problem for me. He made stupid and pointless moves just to make the main characters shine.

In other words the heroes of this story can only shine if the villains are weaker than they are and act dumbly.

I see nothing great about beating such villains and yet, it feels like this manga tries to convince me that this is great and that the heroes are in desperate situation where in fact they have the advantage of having superpowers and being ridiculously strong and are capable of doing things that no one else can. Moreover, Kuelbo and his soldiers are not fully aware what powers exactly they have.

This whole showing them as great smells like bullshit.

They have an advantage and still the story needs to put on their way unchallenging and dumb villains for them to win.

I sure am hoping this is a fruit of this arc bec the story needs a juicy conflict so bad. Let the witchhunt begin!

Yeah, the author really thinks this is a dire situation for our protagonists. And here i thought kuelbo was at the losing end. Hahaha.

I was not afraid that Hak would be killed or even one of the other participants...Not even in case of Kuelbo...

What is still not explained and I don´t understand this: Where was the king of Kouka during that battle? What else could have been that important? Kusanagi didn´t even show, why Soo Won was absent. The last time we see him, he realizes that a tribe of North Kai was attacking Kouka.

This arc should obviously help to spead the influence of Yona/Hak inside Kouka. And that stupid allusion that Hak is in love with Yona...I cannot laugh about it. At least not anymore.

Thats potential conflict right there! It doesnt really matter what his reasons are, what matters is him being portrayed as absentee king in a do or die situation. But who knows... its probably just enough to say 'suwon sending his right hand(keishuk) is equivalent to him being personally there --thats one way to spin it.

As for the next couple of chapters... brace yourselves for the much awaited lovers reunion
