Well, I don’t think that she must say exactly these words, but the general outline of this scene, where Hak is the one throwing himself to protect Su-won and Yona gives Su-won some passionate speech that knocks some sense into him, is good.

You may argue if maybe Yona should rather say something like: ‘Since Hak risked his life to protect you, don’t even dare to make it pointless!’ would be better and if this speech should be a bit longer, but I think this are details. The general idea is good. It can be refined a bit, but it is good.

now that would be a good way to show that how good yona is as a ruler.. that she isnt going to ignore someones crimes no matter how much good deeds they did afterwards or how close they are to her..
But Yona is guilty of the same crime. She killed Kum-ji who might have had a nice daughter whom he loved dearly, etc., so if Yona can be forgiven why not Su-won?

Well yes, I put in those words for extra drama, but it could be anything really. It would be a nice conclusion to Hak's divided mind too. Thanks for appreciating my overactive imagination hehe. :D

i wrote a paragraph n somehow ended uo deleting it -_-

well.. not gonna write as much.. (ended uo writing paragraphs again) but killing a king is the highest levek of treason one could commit.. killing a bandit who kidnapped you doesnt come close to plotting against the king n executing him

we as readers may see it all.. but the people within the manga wont.. also.. there are no witness yona killed kumiji aside from dragons who wont testify against yona.. but soo wons treason is pretty much known by many.. just no one thinks its a good idea to get rid of him now..

once he is not needed anymore.. i doubt anyone would want just a sly person on throne..

Killing a king is a problem if you fail to do it and take over. If you succeed, it is a different story.

Su-won succeeded and got coroneted, so Yona has two choices if she wants the throne back:
1. Start a rebellion to overthrow Su-won.
2. Make a coup d'état to kill Su-won and take the throne.

Technically speaking it didn’t matter in the past what subjects thought. They had no political power and those in power very rarely gave a damn what the ordianry people thought. Most of the time they didn’t.

In democracy all the adult people with maybe exception of criminals have the right to vote, which gives ordinary people political power. This is why politicians in democratic countries give a damn about people’s opinions and try to convince people to their ideas or influence them, but autocracies and oligarchies don’t work like this.

In autocracy the decisions of a ruler are not limited by popular control unless there is a threat of a coup d'état or mass insurrection.

Also, I am not a specialist in Chinese history, but from what heard in cases where the ruler was overthrown, it was interpreted as a sign that the ruler was unworthy, and had lost the mandate of heaven, so people may as well explain it this way.

well.. id say once taking the throne most ruler(who isnt a protagonist) would punish those who did injustice against them.. specially if it happen to be similar to what happened with yona..

also.. if yona succeeds in getting the throne.. that means soo won was unsuccessful in his plan.. n only delayed the consequence of his action.. so him getting punished makes sense..

by old times.. i meant.. people in those days believed in supernatural things.. like devine punishment n so on.. all the citizens would want him to be punished along with one or two generals..

i dont see yona going out of her way to neglect all those voices n let soo won just get away without doing anything at all..

exile is the least bit he deserves if he loses his throne n is still alive.. considering what he did for the country.. if he manages to keep his throne.. thats a different story.. if he dies.. thats also different story..

i dont think in this story.. a king of kouka can do much if he doesn't have the trust of his generals.. just like how wind tribe is completely independent of soo wons decisions.. n does whatever it pleases.. only following soo won when they think thats the right thing to do..

i dont think yona has to do any of those either.. since kouka believes in superstition.. just the word that she is hiryuu reincarnation n the power of dragons to prove that point would be enough to achieve trust of most tribes.. besides.. a common soldier killed ex fire tribe general.. so yeah.. a truth like that obviously matters.. n is cancerous.. also the fact that soo won killed ll makes the matter worse for soo won..

without trust.. a king will fall without a doubt.. no matter which era..

I don't think she will do it, because it would turn her into a huge hypocrite in, I suppose, many readers' eyes.

Even if no one in the story knows that she is guilty of the same crime if she tries to punish Su-won, while conveniently forgetting that she killed Kum-ji without trying to reason with him, it is hypocrisy. It does not matter that other characters do not know or would not testify against her, it is enough that readers know.

Actually, I don’t think Yona would want to be the ruler and we know that she does not mind Su-won on the throne.

i personally think yona is getting links that are needed to get infos as a ruler..

1.she has built trust with wind tribe

2.rust with fire tribe

3.trust with water tribe

4.trust with foreign country

5.n now soo wons most influential informar ogi is getting closer to yona..

with all these.. n 6 exceptional people on yonas side.. n with the knowledge she is slowly acquiring.. she has the technical needs that a ruler needs.. like soo won has..

but the problem is the nature.. she is still similar to ll for most larts.. sure she showed she can be aggressive at times.. but her commitment lacks compared to soo won..

that guy was willing to throw away everything for his country's sake(soo won) i dont see yona being able to do that.. even at the end of the series..

so for me.. she will never be as committed ruler as soo won.. but the thing is.. king ll completely destroyed the kingdom.. the trbies dont get along.. their king wont aid for war.. people are starving.. nations are plotting..

i dont see all these problems once soo won steps down.. so yona will be in much better position than won is eight now when she succeeds..

the thing is.. soo won is hurting.. he is only holding back his emotions because he set his eyes on the goal.. once its achieved.. he will break down.. the guilt.. sadness.. i personally think death is the real peace for soo won n zeno..

so.. i see yona taking the thrown since soo won isnt there anymore.. making her succeed the thrown as an obligation because she cares about her country would be a good way..

tho my happy ending is soo won n yona marries for the countrys sake n eventually falls in love.. mutual love this time around :p
Like I mentioned before...only the Wind Tribe stands firmly behind her and maybe a good chunk of fanatic believers in the Fire Tribe, but the Generals have an interest in keeping Soo Won.
So if a civil war will happen, it is likely that it will end in a blood bath...Foreign countries like Kai will try to take over...In a way it would be similarily to the thing Ik soo said...that Yona will be responsible for a lot of bloodshed if she choses the way she desires.

Well yes, I agree with you which is why I feel she will not become the ruler at the end. If Kusa wanted she could have probably taken the story in the direction above, and maybe even given her some prior knowledge in administration and what not. If she had the inclination to become a ruler, she might have studied on the go, or asked Zeno for the same on how to rule.

But when people say that she "can't make a good ruler" I disagree...she has natural inbuilt traits, is empathetic and can inspire others. So if there were to be a time skip...where they show her as an effective leader after some years...it would be horrible writing because we wouldn't see her journey but not unrealistic. There are several other people at court who can advise her with administrative and military matters such as a rebellion or a war.

In fact, Soo-Won taking decisions without taking too much advise is not very realistic, but has been purposely shown to make him an invincible leader...but even he has flaws which I talk about below.

What I am trying to say is that, maybe this is why Yona does not want to be a ruler. It was maybe Hiryuu's desire not to rule in the next life and try to live happily. Being a ruler does not equal to happiness, which is clear in Soo-Won and even Il's case.

We can see that Soo-Won is a good leader, but even he has his flaws- namely lack of empathy and looking for the swiftest ways possible to attain peace without calculating the bloodshed, to achieve this goal. He also isn't able to let anyone inside the depths of his heart, and that might effect his rule later on. Does he let his people into his heart the way Yona does? I know one might argue that being stoic is good because you can take rational decisions, but then I remember that chapter where the common people were saying war never benefits the common people, only the people who rule them. I don't know if Soo-Won has fully accepted his people in his heart yet, above his goal of making Kouka strong. Which also makes me ask the question - what is he doing it all for? Is he doing it to fulfill his dad's dying wish? I think he needs to find this answer and maybe Yona can inspire him to do this. Soo-Won also fails to realise the impact that gods and the priests have on the people (probably inherited from Yu-Hon), which will come back to bite him if the fire tribe wants Yona as the queen.

Update: Also he has issues to solve of his own personal guilt, and the fact that he said he doesn't intend to sit on the throne. He himself wants to throw it away as @lindananahayashida pointed out. So what is his resolve? He needs to figure it out.
It is realistic, if you consider that Soo Won at least prepared himself for that task ( About 10 years...that s a lot of time). He might be a genius in that field, but it isn t like he is flawless either. Sometimes his feelings get in the way.
tbh.. kill yourself right now.. seems a bit cliched to me xD n for such simple words to change the mind of a person as firm as soo won would be weird..

id rather yona says something like.. "what you did to the previous king was treason and unforgivable.. however i wont forget what you did for this kingdom.. as mercy.. you will only be exiled.."

now that would be a good way to show that how good yona is as a ruler.. that she isnt going to ignore someones crimes no matter how much good deeds they did afterwards or how close they are to her..
I don t think that she will perceive it as unforgivable...Her father killed his own brother and took Soo Won s father away, when he was a boy of 10 years. I think there could be a reason why Yona doesn t adress the topic. She doesn t wish to think that her father was a cruel person who killed his own brother.

i wrote a paragraph n somehow ended uo deleting it -_-

In fact there are a few people who just tolerate the murder of King Il.. People care for their own wellbeing. I think that pretty much nobody cared that King Il was a "good person" as long as they were fine. So it doesn t seem to be such an unforgivable deed. People are practical creatures and Yona would have to face that Soo Won had a personal reason.
If she would think it was so unforgivable, she would be a hypocrite. She knew how she felt when her father died and how she wanted to take revenge.

Actually, I don’t think Yona would want to be the ruler and we know that she does not mind Su-won on the throne.
Not only that. It would be a cliche for me...The girl who doesn t wish for the throne ( and did nothing to gain it) would inherit it only due to the reason that she is the reincarnation.
I can see Yona as a warrior...which means if she has to fight an evil dragon her abilities might be practical and advantageous, but it seems just so weird if the 16 year old gets on the throne and rules the country.
She would need lots of advice...

I think she might rather say that Soo Won should keep the throne...he murdered for it and now he is responsible to keep the people safe. ( I wonder if King Il also murdered for the throne...somehow there could be a certain similarity between King Il and Soo Won).

Yona could be a queen and a ruler ( after 5-10 years of additional education), but I don t think that she even wishes to go back.
Oh man! I wished that they had let Yona learn a little bit more in the direction of a ruler....if she similarily to Daenerys in GOT had to learn bit by bit about ruling...that it is not so easy ect...it would have been also a nice ride...but just on the throne and everything is fine...is worse than a fairy tale for me.

well.. i highly doubt the writer will ever bring kumiji as anything relevant.. so most people would not find it hypocrisy.. as people tend to ignore things that are nt shown.. besides.. i still believe killing n plotting against king is worse than killing a bandit..

aside from yona accepting soo won as king.. its safe to say that at some point there path will clash.. n i think yona is the type of person.. that will accept it as long as she can come in terms with someone.. the way she declared you are not fit to be king to soo jin.. makes it clear that.. if someday soo won decides to take a step similar to how he achieved the throne.. yona might as well say the same to soo won as well..

besides.. we saw how stubborn she can be in xiing arc.. stupidly revealing her identity.. n soo wons force to one of xiings best warrior.. also making tae jun signal a fire..

she is willing to go to any extent to do what she wants.. even tho it was pretty obvious that..

1.the war was declared by xiing kingdom..

2.i highly doubt.. had it not been gobi n the situation.. kouren would agree to soo wons conditions.. n if a war had occurred.. xiing will have many informations about koukas force cause of vold & algira.. even if xiing lost.. they wouldve done more damage than they could've by themselves

so my point is.. if in future.. soo won n yona disagrees.. n won doesnt agree with yona like he did in xiing arc.. theres a great chance that yona will start to think soo won is not worthy king anymore n doing stuff that he shouldn't..

I think Kum-ji was the lord of the Awa port, not just a simple bandit.

If Kusanagi counts on the fact that people forget what happened at Awa and that it will not be brought up against Yona, it would be very hazardous. If Yona starts telling how Su-won deserves divine punishment for killing her father or agrees with calls for such punishment while conveniently forgetting that she herself is guilty of the same crime, I would start calling her Yona, the Queen of Hypocrisy.

Also, I don’t see why I should value the king’s life higher than anyone’s else.

As for Yona and Su-won, I think they may very well end up fighting together against Kai or whatever is this darkness from the prophesy. I would bet on Kai since it is the biggest threat to Kouka.

It would make more sense for me if they worked together since this manga so far has done a build-up towards an ending where they are not enemies. Each of their encounters is still very emotional, but the emotions are cooling dawn allowing them cooperate rather than exacerbating, which would lead to a clash.

Even in Xing arc Su-won was not an antagonist. He was not even averse to peace talks with Kouren. It rather seemed that he deemed them impossible. In a way he was right since it was ultimately Gobi and the situation that forced Kouren to talk with him. Koren was obviously a bigger problem to the peace than Su-won.

To tell the truth one of my beefs with the Xing arc is that Su-won should have started by trying to establish diplomatic relationship with Xing, but of course it was Yona’s time to shine, so he needed to forget to make such a basic move so that Yona could shine.

I wonder who Yona thinks is worthy to be the King and why? She seems to have no problem in casting judgment who is unworthy, but so far she has not told what makes someone a worthy ruler and why.

Seeing how she thought that Yu-hon did not become the ruler because he killed some enemies, which while cruel would not make a prince lose the throne in the past. It seems to hint that she may have a very naive notion that the ruler must be a paragon of virtues to do a good job.

If Yona thinks that ruling is a purity contest, she is a naive fool.

Could it be that you are also a little fed up with Yona s development? Honestly I wondered why a 16 year old girl that never ruled anything should decide who is the worthiest candidate for a king. In addition she obviously didn t think that her father was unfit before she was cast out of the castle.

Still feel she said this to throw Soo-Won off guard, because in the next panel she thinks that his expression changed, even she knows violence to a certain extent is required to rule. But in situations where it can be done without violence, like Xing, then why not?

Also its not because Yu-Hon killed enemies, it's because he dumped heads...that's what she was questioning and it seems to me a valid questions, paragon of virtues or not. Anyone who dumps heads for pleasure doesn't seem to have a right mental state, though I know you said that maybe something prompted him, even then.

It wasn't because of the dumping that he lost his throne, she was basically questioning his mental state and overall morality in my opinion, which could have made him lose the throne.

We don t know if he liked it. Heck we do not know if he was sadistic or if he only believed it was the right way of treating enemies. Nor do we know why he suddenly decided that or why King Junam apparently didn t mind. I think Kusanagi could have told us a little more here.

Lets just imagine any of the rational characters here, such as Soo-Won or Ju-Doh dumping heads to send a signal to an enemy territory, AFTER defeating them, we know they wouldn't do that, because they are rational.

I don't know if Yu-Hon liked it, but his rationality 100% comes into question, seeing how his act led to an entire generation of hatred from Kouren's side. Anyone who was in their right mind and thought the best for their own country would not do that. And in my opinion it really doesn't make him a suitable king, unlike his son, who thinks five steps ahead all the time.

I think it is notheworthy that nobody questioned his rationality in the manga. It was a common knowledge that Yu hon beheaded these people, since Soo Won just admitted it in front of the soldiers. There is no strong reaction towards it, so we can assume that it was not that extraordinary to do that. There are even more cruel deeds that are sometimes committed in a war.
Murdering a whole village did indeed happen.

There is also the sentence of Soo Won where he admitted that it would depend on the circumstances. That points to a situation where it was most likely not just a plain show of cruelty.

Yeah, recently it is rather meh. It seems I should find her admirable in every scene even when her actions are vacuous.

Still feel she said this to throw Soo-Won off guard, because in the next panel she thinks that his expression changed, even she knows violence to a certain extent is required to rule.
Maybe, but she gained nothing from seeing his expression change, so I don’t see the point of doing it.

Still, dumping the heads of enemies after the enemy was defeated would not be enough to lose the throne. It is not like in the past existed concepts like crime against humanity. These are modern notions.

And there is this scene from years later where Yu-hon says something that the throne is not a big deal and that he will protect his little brother and the country, so it seems that either he was able to act and control himself very well or was not really that bad and power hungry.

There is also the sentence of Soo Won where he admitted that it would depend on the circumstances. That points to a situation where it was most likely not just a plain show of cruelty.
Good point. I hoped that the whole dumping of heads may get more context and it is not there just to give Kouren a sad backstory. It was recently brought up again, so maybe there is still a chance.

the devine punishment was rather how people would think for making their beloved hiryuu suffer.. rather than yonas thought.. what i ws pointing out that.. yona has no need to go out of her way to save soo won if a situation arises where yona gets the throne.. n people finds out about soo won.. she has absolutely no reason to just let soo won walk away n defend for his sake..

i dont think not trying to protect n raise your voice for your parents killer makes one hypocrite.. rather id say.. not caring enough for the murderer of her father to defend him.. but seeing what he did for the kingdom n keep his punishment to minimal.. is a normal thing to do..

like i said.. if she can pass her judgement on soo-jin and like you added.. yu-hon about not being worthy to be ruler.. she could do the same to soo won if she ever completely disagrees with soo wons situation..

also.. the clash of ideals already started with xiing arc.. this time soo won agreed with yona.. theres no guarantee he will agree with her next time as well.. n she went as far as to create a panic at the time of war by using fire tribe.. if she is doing this much for another country.. who knows what she will do if she thinks what won is doing is bad for kouka..

tho since she is the protagonist.. it will in the end work out.. we will also find out yu-hon was a bad guy after all.. because.. yona hime said it.. n theres no way the author will potray as yona dumb or liar..

in any case.. kumiji was has not been mentioned for a long time.. i doubt he will ever be except for maybe half a panel flashback maybe..

the fact of the matter is.. people hate soo won even after showing his side of story.. even if we were to assume ll didnt kill yu hon.. that still doesn't change the fact that the kingdom was dooming.. n had won waited.. i doubt a king like ll would be able to defeat fire tribe+hazara.. when even won needed help from gun-tae.. n i doubt gun-tae would've helped ll..

so.. if (most) people can hate soo won even after all these.. i doubt most people will notice the kumiji thing at all.. maybe you n some other.. but you will be the minority tbh..

@lindananahayashida I'm afraid it may end up like you say, but I still strongly hope that it won't. Until the Xing Arc (well, maybe the Forts Arc), the author had shown a considerable skill, so she should be able to write a better ending than a cliche with Yona remaining totally unchallenged in her judgment.

the devine punishment was rather how people would think for making their beloved hiryuu suffer.. rather than yonas thought.. what i ws pointing out that.. yona has no need to go out of her way to save soo won if a situation arises where yona gets the throne.. n people finds out about soo won.. she has absolutely no reason to just let soo won walk away n defend for his sake..

i dont think not trying to protect n raise your voice for your parents killer makes one hypocrite.. rather id say.. not caring enough for the murderer of her father to defend him.. but seeing what he did for the kingdom n keep his punishment to minimal.. is a normal thing to do..

like i said.. if she can pass her judgement on soo-jin and like you added.. yu-hon about not being worthy to be ruler.. she could do the same to soo won if she ever completely disagrees with soo wons situation..
That would only apply if the entire kingdom would recognize the "reincarnation of King Hiryuu as the sole ruler of this country." I wonder if it is possible that all tribes believe that. Even then Yona is still a complete newbie.

If she doesn t reach that unity, her judgement is worth zero.

@lindananahayashida You may be right, but I agree with Aniela. It will be disappointing and the author has the talent to make a well-written ending.

Yeah, recently it is rather meh. It seems I should find her admirable in every scene even when her actions are vacuous.

Like I said, I don't think Yona was referring to one incident that made Yu-Hon lose the throne, I think she was referring to his mentality and morality to do it after defeating an enemy, and that mentality might have been applied in different situations.

I doubt he was power hungry, but that doesn't mean he was stable mentally, or thought of ways to solve things without extreme violence. So far whatever we have heard about Yu-Hon was extreme violence.

Yu-Hon believed in mainly violent methods to exert control, whereas Il believed in completely non-violent methods. They were both extreme and not fit to be king according to the manga so far, and I think I'll only change my opinion if we find out more.

Their kids on the other hand have the leadership skills and sense that that their parents were short on. I think Soo-Won idolises Yu-Hon wayy to much to realise this, but I hope he gets a proper revelation soon. Yona has already kind of accepted that Il was a bad king.
