And ultimately, there is no reason to oppose the guy, at least so far I don't see any victory here.
If the Republicans could stonewall Garland for a year, what does an additional few years matter?

Just being a devil's advocate really though, because I have no idea how midterm elections would go for the Dems if they unite against it (they won't most likely, Congressmen are always running for reelection). But I don't really know if it's an "improvement" over Scalia or not.

Well, it matters because a fully functional supreme Court is vital to the country. It is one of it's most important institutions. What the Republicans did is extraordinarily close to actually destroying US institionality as a whole. It's catastrophic. And Democrats would be exactly the same as Republicans were, they have a duty to hear the guy proposed and vote on him. IMO cutting their loses with the generic Republicans and calling out their betrayal to their duties and the country as a whole is the best case scenario.

At this point, I consider most republicans to be unAmerican and against American interests. Seems like Trump wants to create a country where he gets praised, and white people are unanimously seen as the leaders. Fuck the entire party, Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt would be so embarrassed.

Hence why I called them FYP Party.
If anything, Lincoln would've been extremely disappointed in how the party in his name turned out to be a clusterfuck in today's world.
Roosevelt would've just jumped back into the Progressive "Bull Moose" party, which might've been possible to replace the Republican Party for that. It's a damn shame we'll never get a badass president as Theodore Roosevelt tho. :biblethump

Well, teddy wouldn't be seen as "badass" nowadays. I mean, his main hobby was to hunt. If he had been there during the Cecil controversy he would have congratulated the dentist and then asked about the lion's pups so that he could hunt down the pups of a celebrated lion. Well, perhaps all the other stuff he did would still be seen as badass though (albeit unnecessary in today's context). Teddy wasn't a republican though, wasn't he from the progressive movement? His stances seems closer to bernie sanders than a republican anyways considering the new deal. And Lincoln was completely pro federal government...

Funny how republicans became the exact opposite of what they used to be, from being a people's party to being about themselves adn the wealthy.

Well, Roosevelt was in a different time.

He'd probably draw ire for killing animals but doing a lot for the land and would definitely be against DAPL. Wonder how he'd react to people criticizing him for killing animals.

He ran as a republican and I think rejoined the party after the Bull Moose Progressive party failed.

Well, yeah, animal hunting in modern day would've made Roosevelt a controversial President (then again, how can he be more controversial than the moron we have running the country?).
Of course he wasn't a Republican, he was more Progressive than Conservative (especially in cleaning up the clusterfuck of a mess called "Capitalism" by passing Anti-Trust Laws and regulations over Monopolies).

It's unfortunate that the Party of Lincoln is dead. Wished he and the Founding Fathers were alive today, just to see the collateral damage done by such politicians.

Those statements are not contradictory.
The US is not really that caring about whether taliban reign afghanistan.
Don't forget: Before the taliban took power, there was a democratic opposition begging the US to fight them. The US didnt.
Afghanistan was blind activism back when 9/11 happened, it was not a geostrategical powerplay.

What influence would Afghanistan give the US in that region? They cannot dronewar in pakistan that well anymore, but on the other hand , why would they even need to by now?
Al qaida is active everywhere now, so is ISIS. The dronewar was effective before the rise of ISIS, but by now some old men in Waziristan are irrelevant.

It is not like the troops the US has there by now are anything significant that would enable them to control more than a patch of desert.
The US wants out, they just don't want to face the claims about how they left all those poor people to die when the Taliban return.
But i don't think the Trump administration cares about that all that much as Obama might have.
Afghanistan is a nice place to have influence over. Just with Afghan borders you have access to 40% of world population. That's why Soviets invaded them back then. If this country is managed right it can be super rich in 2 decades. US would've love to turn Afghanistan into something like South Korea. But doesn't seem to be possible.

India has so many problems that it will not be a global player any time soon.
Let's look at your statement: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)#Lists
That's cute. Same was said about China 15 years back.

Look at how Chinese GDP(nominal) per capita changed over the years
2000 - $959
2005 - $1,754
2010 - $4,561
2015 - $8,027
2020 - ?????
2030 - ?????

Back in 2000, USA, JAPAN, FRANCE, UK, GERMANY all had bigger economies than China. Look at it now. China almost catching up with US.

India is already the third largest economy in terms of PPP. They'll overtake the ones infront of them except USA and China soon.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/realspi...surpasses-that-of-great-britain/#5a085b9339eb

Every country has problems. But despite problems India keeps growing. So does, Indonesia, Turkey, Nigeria, Vietnam and others.
India is less important for the world trade than big european nations are (because let's face it, even countries like italy with a lower GDP export more valuable techonology on a whole, while india exports a lot of products like clothes and stuff).
This is bound to change. Probably within 5 damn years.
But no other block even comes close to those three, and i wouldnt bet on India even surpassing the big three european nations anytime soon.
UK, France, Germany?

They probably have already surpassed UK and France :lmao
They'll surpass Germany shortly.
Well we can discuss that in the EU threat, but just briefly: Le Pen is not going to win.
Everything points to a win of Macron, who is very pro EU.
France won't leave the EU in the next term of the french president.

Italy leaving is a long shot, but it is not impossible. That would ACTUALLY be devastating, but once again: As long as France and Germany are in the european nation, it wont break apart.
If countries from the south leave that, paradoxically, could even leave the EU as being more stable than before because the Euro would be more stable than before.
Also, I wanna see britain leaving first.
I'll reply it to the European Politics thread later.

Oh look, threats at iran now. And this is just week two. They are "on notice" because trump is a tough big boy.
Even US officials aren't accusing Iran of violating the deal. So what's the outrage? Because it causes instability?

Iran do have nuclear ambition, and rightfully so. That's why they are testing ballistic missiles. Ballistic missiles have not much use unless it's carrying a nuke. They do have intermediate range ballistic missiles already.

But there is a reason why egypt, saudi Arabia and other Gulfstates get excluded: Those are actually of importance to the US even tho actual terrorists came from there.

It is funny how he went 'oh my god clinton gets money from saudi arabia' when it was not even true and he himself has business ties there and does not include the one country that actually exports terror onto his list.
I find it funny how South Korea is just as important strategically in Asia as Israel is in the middle east but you never see a presidential candidate declare their undying loyalty to Korea like they do for Israel. Clearly the amount of money funneled in by special interest donors across political lines is highly effective at shaping US policy.

As far as Clinton getting money from the Saudi's it depends by what you mean by the word "Get" ┬┴┬┴┤( ͡° ͜ʖ├┬┴┬┴

The Clinton Foundation did get money.

They're still not doing enough.

I could be misinformed though.
You could put those words under the DNC motto.
Weak corporate Democrats is why you end up with a candidate like Trump winning taking some of the working class base.

At this point, I consider most republicans to be unAmerican and against American interests. Seems like Trump wants to create a country where he gets praised, and white people are unanimously seen as the leaders. Fuck the entire party, Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt would be so embarrassed.
This is nothing new although both parties have ties to big donor interests but for the the Republican party they sold out their party almost entirely to big money interests decades ago ! That ship sailed long ago for Republicans who's working class members for reasons I cant fathom (perhaps mainly social/religious issues) continue to support them despite their stance on policies that are harmful to them.

The Democratic party is supposed to be the party of the working class but increasingly we see them hide behind being on the right side of social issues while selling out on the corporate financial ones. The real progressives are marginalized as they threaten the money train the corporate Dem's feed off of. Hence why they got wiped out propping up the poster child of Corporate Dems Hillary.

Well, china's economy is definitely going to become larger over the next years and it will certainly surpass US GDP. Though I would argue there are more important factors than that at play. That said, china has some serious demographic issues which will IMO definitely play a part in preventing them from becoming the world's most important superpower. Their men to women ratio is less than ideal (math will prevent many men from finding a mate regardless of circumstances) and their population is aging all thanks to their birth control thingy. I can't rule out them "solving" this issue via mass euthanasia though.

Yes but... what exactly are they going for here? The deal is still in effect but trump did make the promise that the US would back out. Ultimately the threats the US is making make absolutely no sense at all while the deal is in effect. And if they back out from the deal, they are basically threatening to invade iran. Unless the plan is to be really loud about being tough but then settling for sanctions though that would be kinda asinine because they already have made the point that such measures are weak and ineffective. Overall, everything the trump administration just said is an incoherent rant which reeks of idiocy.

China's aging population and sex ratio is a result of forced one child policy. Now the policy is much lax. And birth rates now increasing. Besides how much problem would it be if a few of 1.3billion can't find a mate?
China's biggest issue is language. English is the language of internet and hardly anyone outside china knows Mandarin(Many in China doesn't know Mandarin :kappa)
So I guess China will never be able to dominate the media like US has been doing.

US accusing Iran of testing ballistic missile and Iran saying they tested cruise missile. Not sure which side is right here. But even if it's ballistic missile this is not the first time Iran testing them after the agreement.

Most media articles nowadays are 20% what happened and 80% mix of their assumptions, predictions and bias worded in a way(especially in titles) which make them out to be facts when they are not. Quite a sad situation really.

Like I said many times, America was founded on Christian values and now they will have their well deserved place in modern American politics.

The founding fathers would have encouraged the people to rebel and fight against the politicians, especially Trump. Sad that republican voters are happy with republicans destroying a lot of good things and making USA worse. There's no logical reason to take down the regulation to block selling guns to mentally ill, especially when they themselves try to deflect blame off guns by blaming mental illness for causing mass shootings.

And when was USA ever a Christian country or founded on Christian values? But then again, Christian values explain why USA is so close minded, bigoted, and doing badly when it comes to social issues.

But that does not mean you have influence over 40% of the world population because you have some military bases in the desert while you do not even have real control about the government of that coutnry.

And the country won't be anywhere near 'rich' even in 5 decades no matter what you do. There are insane structural and political problems.
I don't think anyone in the US has any delusions about afghanistan turning into south korea, they didn't even try doing that.
There was not intention nor hope for that to happen.

Afghanistan was a good hub for some military operations in the middle east when the agenda was 'war on terror'.
But that was not the reason for invading it. The reason was that they hosted Bin laden and even if he fled to Pakistan you could fight Al Quaida from there.
Geopolitically, Afghanistan is not relevant.
If the US has business in China, they got Australia, Japan and new zealand for Operations.
If they have business in Russia, they have east Europe in the Nato (which is nearer to key russian places than afghanistan.
Afghanistan has minor relevance for operations in the eastern middle east (for the west, they got israel in the Nato) and that's it.

This is bound to change. Probably within 5 damn years.

The thing is: That bump already happened in India.
http://www.tradingeconomics.com/india/gdp

It wasn't all that big. The GDP grwoth rates are already stabilizing. There are Boom years, but as we see with China, there is a point where rates normalize.
It is true for China. They are catching up at some point due to their size, but India is nowhere near that to happen.
India's grwoth rate is 7% while still being smaller than top european economies. For the size, that is really really slow.
And it comes from huge structural Problems i mentioned.
Their tech center metropoles still deal with weekly power shortages and black outs.
India is not going to go anywhere in the near future.
Every country keeps growing. The growth rate of the EU is 2% even tho is is a massive tradeblock. 2% grwoth in the EU is much bigger than 7% in china if you look at the absolute value, and as i mentioned, the EU exports a lot of key items such as high tech while a lot of asia's growth is connected to cheap labout that they cannot rely on if they want to become global key players.

What makes you think it is about money? By that logic, the US should nonstop declare their undying love to saudi arabia.
But they don't.
To think the US would be dependend on israeli money is really not founded on an objective basis.
The fact that Israel is in a more delicate political situation than south korea is the key part here and that republicans traditionally put, as christians, a big emphasis on the region.

In any case: The clinton foundation got peanut money years before clinton even was secretary of state by saudi donors. Yes. So what?

To think that she received any significant amount of the saudis as government when it was clear she would be in a political keyrole is one of the baseless claims that character assassinated her in the election.

So from your logic, this is actually a Quaker country, not Christian country, as Quakers had few different beliefs from Christians. USA was settled by the Quakers because they were fleeing persecution from Christians. Puritans also played a major role in the early days of the country and colonies. USA may have been a religious country due to how it oppresses people and creates bigotry, but not a Christian country.
