As far as I understand the defunding the police stuff does not refer to actually taking money away from police departments. Rather than that, it refers to taking functions away from the police, retrain them, and in some cases start police departments from scratch. Dunno why they refer to this as "defunding" though. It's like if they intentionally picked a name for this that makes no sense without context and can be easily used by political enemies. Why not just scream something like "reform the police"? reminds me of how sanders stupidly shots himself in the leg for no reason by calling himself a socialist...
Pretty sure defunding means taking away money from police department, given how BLM supporters support every instances of mayors or governors taking away some money.

He has used either at different times. And even then, democratic socialists is a bad enough label as is it. His policies generally are closer to social democracy anyways, at least the more popular ones.
Anyone with "left" values instantly becomes communist lol.

'm saying that they don't need billions of dollars the way schools would.
I dunno, they can reduce payrolls and etc? Apparently lot of cops are making extra money in illegal or horrible ways, so I'm sure this won't be a huge blow to them.

Nah, he still sucks, and you're proving that.
Reduced payrolls on people who put their lies at risk regularly would be very harsh... They aren't paid as well as they should either.. A lower salary would encourage further illegal money making opportunities.... It'll have to be better than that..

On Ben Shapiro, yea, lets leave it there...

Ben Shapiro seems like a good debater because he speaks fast. That's it. And because he debates liberals.

They choose to put their lives at risk, but they also abuse that power and are excessively violent. They don't deserve to get paid tens of thousands of dollars. Dunno why you think higher salary wouldn't encourage more illegal money making opportunities when that doesn't stop CEOs from being unethical and immoral.

Only reason Ben Shapiro looks smart is because of centrists who think they're smart or "wise" for being "impartial."

You are describing reforming the police... That makes sense is some places, where you redefine the police structure from scratch and maybe even change a significant number of staff... Defunding is being discussed along with it, or as another option, but they aren't the same thing surely. Reforming has been tried before but defunding hasn't, which is why its caught more traction...

Ben Shapiro seems like a good debater because he speaks fast. That's it. And because he debates liberals.
Because he debates liberals? Are you suggesting liberals are bad at reasoning?

I didn't say that... I am saying lowering their salary will encourage more illegal money making opportunities...
Regarding CEO's, its a totally different argument cos its not about the salary alone. So that angle or argument isn't right..

i'd take this over an unknown tweet.....
but the point being whether their salaries should be cut down or not... if the salaries were as high as mentioned it tweets, more people would enroll to be a cop....
Also, overtime isnt that common in the police force...if it is, that should severely be restricted.... specially considering the line of duty...

Only reason Ben Shapiro looks smart is because of centrists who think they're smart or "wise" for being "impartial."
That is a baseless claim... Ben Shapiro is known for college crowds who are overwhemlingly liberal. and you seriously cant say he isn't smart just cos you dont like him... I dislike him too and disagree with almost everything he says, but i am not gonna fake call him dumb for that reason.

Yea, that i agree....
Bunch of college kids who have never read a book on politics and have never done research in their lives. He's never actually debated an academic before IIRC.

Jordan Peterson too. His debate against Slavoj Zizek was hilarious.

They're both academics though. No one really "wins" a philosophical debate.

Ben Shapiro's entire schtick is "facts don't care about your feelings", but his hardline, cold logic falls apart when it comes to anything he stands for.

Yes they are. The point is not to "win" but to educate the other side. But Peterson, who only read the manifesto, trying to debate Marx was funny. Neo Post-Modernist Marxists. lol

He calls himself a libertarian but has contradicted himself on libertarian ism many times.

What I mean is Shapiro goes to colleges and debates students who clearly have no idea what they're talking about and says "Socialist destoryed or liberal destroyed."

He's never sat down with someone like Zizek, or Richard Wolff or anyone of that sort.

Thoughts?

I'm saying lowering their salary isn't going to make that much of a difference, if at all. You could pay them half a million per year, and they'd still find other ways to make money that's not legal. And your link does not prove the tweet wrong but seems to actually support it. I wouldn't be shocked if it was common in NYPD. If the supervisors allow this, even encourage it, then it won't be restricted. "Line of duty" doesn't work here when these same abusive cops are attacking protesters rather than saying they'll stop.

I've seen his tweets that aren't of him arguing. Definitely not smart or aware of much. I don't care about his debating skills, especially if he is as picky as you say he is in who he debates. and likewise, I can just tell you that you can't seriously say he's smart just because he can debate liberal college students who have no idea what they're talking about.

Thoughts?

It's bullshit pandering. I don't really agree with destroying statues the way people have been doing, but I won't shed a tear either. Remove them and put them in museums if you want, but publicly displaying them is a bit odd.

The naming thing is similar, it bothers no one but people who still glorify the confederacy for some reason. But does renaming them actually accomplish anything? Probably not.

Yeah, that's the point. Defunding the police is not just taking money away from districts or departments, it refers to a rather wide range of policy proposals which generally include taking functions away from the police and retraining them or even start departments from scratch along with creating the right non police alternatives that are able to handle the functions that were taking away. " Defunding" the police, in the sense of just taking money from them, if you give it a non zero amount of thought is a dangerously stupid proposal that really serves no one and does jack shit to fix anything and almost certainly would do nothing but add to the problems. I mean, without context that just sounds as taking money away and leaving it at that. Defunding the police is literally reforming the police from scratch. Now, depeding on where you look you will probably find different specific policies...

He is incapable of holding his ground at the same level when others don't react in an emotional manner. Even someone like Joe Rogan or Bill Maher can make him fluster a little... An academic can hit him hard.

Jordan Peterson is amazing and its so funny that he's recognized as a conservative in the media..

Exactly... He entirely relies on the opponent's weakness to draw out facts. If an opponent can do that, he goes into a religious shell or fails to counter...
He is a good debater, which doesn't need for him to be right or accurate...

Is corruption that rampant in the police force? I am genuinely asking this, cos as far as i thought, its not present. Atleast not like developing nations.
How does my link support the tweet? Tweet talks about base of 120 while my link shows much lower.

I am not arguing on reforms like you mentioned, and not limited to disagreeing with defunding... but i need to know more to comprehend.

You can say he's smart because he has a doctorate from Harvard in Law... other than that, its very subjective.... but he is more sound in his arguments than the right, but you yea, you've pretty much nailed the rest...

I think 150$ million drop on a 2 billion existing budget like the article states is reasonable. I get what you mean by defunding ~= reforming but i'd still not equate them as a common word. At the end of the day if its the same thing, we can all agree upon that a reform is required.
The problem is the political implication and how that is being tackled. When Trump says no defunding, he basically means the same, no touching the system.
But Biden says reform, without defunding, its a clearer distinction...

Anyways, i agree with you say more or less, the way the elections take the issue is what will matter in the coming days. Lets see how it goes, i am sure this will become a big issue in the campaign.

My main issue here is that screaming "DEFUND" is something that is comically easy to turn against the people supporting it. Unfortunately most people don't actually bother to ask what people mean when saying stuff which makes this a pretty awful slogan that people on both sides of the political spectrum will believe means you just want to slash police budgets and leave it as that. Policy wise defunding makes sense if you consider the context but ultimately the word itself is just bad politics which hurts the cause.

Trump definitely wants to keep things the same, that's overwhelmingly clear. He fully supports the hyper militarized and overly violent methods the police uses currently. As for biden.... to me that sounds like "nothing would fundamentally change". Lets be realistic, biden is not a good president to handle this sort of thing. He almost certainly does not see the systemic issues concerning the police, let alone the systemic racism. The only advantage of him over trump is that he won't double down on them.

Um, yes. That's part of the problem, and one of the things that led to the protest. They're literally getting violent against peaceful protesters because they refuse to stop being violent towards Black people. They may not take bribes like Indian police forces openly, but they're corrupt. Your link shows there's usually huge pay for overtime. Other than that though, just as with the tweet I linked, how do we know your link is accurate?

Defunding is basically taking away money from them and investing that into other things. I'm not sure why liberals claim otherwise.
You can say he's smart because he has a doctorate from Harvard in Law... other than that, its very subjective.... but he is more sound in his arguments than the right, but you yea, you've pretty much nailed the rest...
So he's still a clueless idiot despite getting a doctorate from Harvard? Damn.

IYea, its a bad word and has been used just for funding cuts as much as its used for other things...

I meant to bring up Trump / Biden to show how the same word means different things. You are right though, such things cannot have a middle ground on the centrist approach, one needs a more bolder approach and this may be his weakness....

Speaking of Biden, he's polling higher than Hillary did as per NPR, so he has a chance...... that is till his screws up...

Well, i am posting an offiicial website..... it cannot be more authentic than that... It says overtime may lead to salaries of over 100,000, but doesn't mention specifics. There are other salary websites that suggest median pay to be 75k ish, and overtime pays hit 95-105kish, but also that overtime is rare and limited.
I am not saying the tweet is wrong, but i am just skeptical enough to not take info unless its sourced. and that author posted no sources or citations.

I'm saying that the official website might not be accurate if it depends on honest information from the NYPD... at this point, it's difficult to trust the police as majority seem corrupt. The leaders are pretty bad as well, letting the lower ranks get away with bad stuff while outing the "good" cops.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with your skepticism, and I don't blame you. I forgot if that link I posted has the officer talk about overtime though.
