What's the deal with texas lawmakers fleeing?

They are trying to block the gerrymandering efforts of the Texas GOP. The GOP is looking to add about five seats to their Federal roster in Texas in the mid-terms to increase their chance of maintaining a house majority. Democrats "fled" to deny them a quorum, which essentially means they can't take the vote on the new district lines. Abbot is asking the state's Supreme Court to remove the Democrat House Leader from office (pending) and they are also looking to bring civil suits to the law makers who have fled.

It's all theater and will not result in anything meaningful happening before the mid-terms in 2026. It amounts to civil violations, and fines. There's very little chance that the ones who fled will stay away long enough to actually delay a vote before the elections they'd have an effect on. Both parties redraw lines in ways that would be more advantageous to them. The Republicans are much better at it, and most of what you seeing is the equivalent of a toddler getting mad they lost at a game.

I'm also not a Republican and hate that this happens.

Can a state's supreme court remove elected officials? I figured it'd be up to local or national congress to do that. What stops them from staying away? Can they be forced back to vote?

One of the biggest inconsistencies is how FBI/Police says the supposed killer dissembled the weapon, put it in his backpack and ran away. A US Vet who is a sniper showed on X formerly twitter how long it takes to dissemble such a weapon, even he needed close to a whole minute and that without packing it away. And then he showed that the weapon, even taken apart, would not fit into the backpack shown on the back of the supposed killer and that they would stick out. If even a pro says that this is not possible despite having done it thousands of times during his career, then how is a young adult, who was mostly permanently online/gaming, supposed to do it after murdering somebody for the first time in their life in less than half a minute?
Also I saw no autopsy report in any newspaper so far. Or news/pictures regarding the bullet. Not saying the whole conspiracies theories circulating around are trust-worthy but this feels weird. Like a lot of people said that this felt like a pro assassination yet it then turns out it was a random gamer getting radicalized? I dunno, man.

Democrats aren't doing that in any broad way. In fact, plenty of those that are considered liberal thought leaders are basically laundering Kirk's reputation for some unknown reason.

And if you're indifferent about the entire thing you're basically doing thoughtcrime according to the Trump administration.

Just imagine that - indifference towards a far-right christian nationalist getting taken out because the whole "good guy with a gun" idea they like to masturbate over isn't effective policy. Never mind the sort of contribution this guy made to making many different groups of people less safe in this country.

It's not enough to simply say people probably shouldn't be murdered over their opinions, you have to lie about who and what Charlie Kirk was, otherwise there might be consequences from the government. What an embarrassment.
