It's wrong either way. We're talking about vaccines going to one of the poorest and most densely populated countries on Earth that has very low levels of immunity. Nominal UN resolutions should have nothing to do with fighting the pandemic.

How is this something to be gleeful about? Innocent people are paying the price for something they have no control over. She and so many people that think this is a good punishment are fucked up.

I am all for populations in countries paying for the mistakes of their governments tbh. But it makes no sense to cut vaccines, let alone covid ones... From the beginning of the pandemic developed nations made the obvious and stupid mistake of not treating the presence of covid in other countries as being as much a threat as its presence in their own borders. This is just more of that but dumber.

Look at that account's location, she lives in the "imperial core". She has no idea what real struggle is in the first place.

This is the dilemma of sanctions. It's the only recourse that's there when nuclear powers are involved, but it's still collective punishment. One that makes the lives of the common person worse and has no real affect on those that have power.

Why? That's pretty fucked up, especially if they don't support their governments.

Yeah, and it seems to be mostly useless as long as the ones in power can take care of themselves, unless they actually care about their people.

Because it makes little sense to worry about russian populace being inconvenienced by sanctions when their government is bombing ukranian citizens out of their homes. Nothing sanctions can do in the short or even mid term to russians is even comparable to what is already happening to the ukranian population. You already have over one million ukranian refugees, who knows much much infrastructure damage (billions? trillions?), thousands of dead... Let alone the impact the trashing of ukraine will have on the world's economy. Their grain production being tanked by russia will have an immediate and severe impact on the globe's pockets...

So we should be okay with causing more suffering? Especially in countries like Bangladesh?

Of course not, we shouldn't be ok with it. But this is a wartime scenario and it is their country that is inflicting that much death an misery in ukraine. Any measure that can be taken against their economy that doesn't result in nukes flying is fair game.

Pure chaos.... The impact of this is larger than what it would initially appear given all the derivatives that come from the products mentioned here. If you were concerned about inflation before then oh boy, wait to see what's coming.

This approach only makes sense to me in countries with actual democracies, and even then I think it's too much for me. The Russian population didn't choose to invade Ukraine here. US citizens didn't choose to invade Iraq either, they were lied to.

Pay attention to how this sentiment changes as gas prices continue to go up.

But... what's the alternative? Continue business as usual? Even though business as usual basically fuels russia's war machine?

At this point the grim reality is that every liter of gas or oil you buy from russia is another bullet russia can fire at ukrainians.

I said it before, there's no real preferable solution. I think there's a grander scope to the criticism in general, the role all sides play in such a thing, and perhaps there could be more granular solutions, but it's kind of irrelevant when population centers are being shelled by a country that has half of the world's nuclear arsenal.

I just reject the notion of being alright with Russian citizens being screwed over and these sanctions being some sort of impetus towards them overthrowing their government in order to stop this shit. People suggesting that this is a valid approach are heartless ghouls. Besides, when/if food shortages start happening in Russia, Putin will be the one to feed them. There is no outside salvation for them, just like in Ukraine.

under less extreme circumstances I'd agree but the situation is far from getting any better. Russia's plans for ukrain remain largely unknown (though speculation that putin plans to break it apart sounds the most reasonable among the apparently available options) and there's zero evidence anywhere that putin has any interest in a diplomatic solution. Going a tad further, russia's made up and illegitimate "security concerns" can't be addressed diplomatically anyways. It's not like ukraine promising to not join nato will stop it from getting closer to the EU. By all appearances the fact is that russia's interest right now is specifically to carry out the war to it's conclusion. Hopefully I'm absurdly wrong though.

Russia is an example of what happens when you let the crazy people take over and stay in power, especially the leftist ones. As much as I hate to say it, the Russians kinda deserve what they have coming to them. Evil prevails when good people do nothing. Now others like Ukraine are suffering due to Russian inaction.

See, that's still a point of contention for me. They're not any more illegitimate than the US's history of "security concerns". It doesn't justify an invasion, but Putin's likely paranoia in regards to Ukraine or the CIA was probably pretty justifiable.

Who are the "leftist" people in power in Russia?
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

I mean, I really don't want to come off as patronizing here, but if you think anything going on in Russia is related to leftists, then you either took the "De-Nazifying" nonsense seriously, or you're using the wrong sources.
--- Double Post Merged, ---

I think insisting on a left-right dichotomy in general is kind of lazy, but it's even less apropos when talking about Russia and it's history

This is weird to me. It's pretty damn clear that a decent number of US security concerns have not been legitimate or true. And the lesson from those should be, at least partly, to not take such claims at face value. historic evidence is not evidence of anything. You could justify anything with something like that. Ukraine or nato posed a military threat to russia? Of what kind? What were they doing? When they were planning on taking any sort of military action? Putin's claims are such utter horseshit that they are framed in such a way that there's not even a diplomatic path out of this. Would nato and ukraine pledging ukraine will never join solve the conflict? Would ukraine pledging to give up it's military altogether get russia to back off? This invasion is at least half a decade in the making....

There's still the question of Maidan Revolution in 2014 though. Though I don't think it's much of a "question" anymore, it's pretty apparent.

Removing the desire to join NATO from Ukraine's constitution is one of the terms offered by Russia regarding an end to this conflict, so while that alone might not "solve" it, it's at least part of the reason why it's happening. The entire Euromaidan and overthrow of Yanukovych was related to this.

From a pragmatist's viewpoint, the issue here really is that Ukraine's self-determinism does not functionally exist without outside influence.
