So you're asserting that Maduro being removed is more important than whether countries should feel emboldened to do what the US just did by kidnapping him? I just don't agree.
That's... too specific to disagree with but tbh to me it already looked like folk on the international stage were doing whatever they wanted without any regard whatsoever for anyone else with or without trump. And sure, the US has a hand in a lot of the chaos but that doesn't take away agency from how other parties are acting and compounding/profiting from this.

Not great, but so far* venezuela isn't Lybia. Heck, the vice president took over as president (for now). I am not unaware of the risks here and with how maduro's government is affiliated to guerrillas, gangs and cartels to varying capacities (which shouldn't be understood as cartel de los soles being a thing) there could be something brewing. The best outcome for now would be either Gonzales being swore in or having new elections.
What is the possible gain here here than that makes the very real risk of a civil war worth taking? If you keep talking about Gangs, you must understand that Trump's actions means the Government has to become more restrictive towards the opposition and also that the US will have to rely on the current leadership, right? The opposition is not strong enough to fight against the militias and only the government can guarantee a stable oilflow once it accepts Trump's demands. That means the possible outcomes are:

  • skrimishes or even civil war because the militias do not accept Trump's terms but the current gov does, in any case even higher crackdown on opposition.
  • the current gov not caving to trump's demands, just like above crackdown on opposition because it becomes even more paranoid
There is no good outcome for the people of Venezuela and the only possible regime change would mean militia control or failed state.

Tell me, how is that a good thing to celebrate in your opinion? Even in your best case, elections, the same thing about the militia would apply if that government caves to trump's demands.

The difference is that nobody here defends what Russia does to Ukraine but you celebrate Trump's illegal actions.

But... there already was violence against citizens. Two stolen elections and thousands of political prisoners. Things weren't just fine before maduro was taken. The way I see it there were two scenarios up until maduro was taken: 30 more years of his ilk in power or massive violent uprisings with civilians confronting the military to finally drag maduro out of the presidential palace. I didn't think the military coup option was likely because maduro had grip on them. And with two stolen elections (at least) anyone who thought there was a democratic way out of this is either delusional or lying. With maduro being out of the picture there's at least more possibilities (and of course, some of them are that things become worst).
But thanks to Trump's action, even more people might die, on top of the citizens he's killed.

I mean, civil war has been in the cards since maduro stole elections. Which is why most of the world did not recognize him as president of venezuela. What are the pacific, non violent ways to remove a president that can't be voted out of office? Add to that, the gangs, militias and cartels in play are not reasonable agents that can be appeased and negotiated with. For context, look at colombia. They had year long negotiations with farc, reached agreements, made concessions to give guerrilla folk places in congress.. and years later the whole thing is an abject failure for the most part. Some folk did leave but farc fragments remain around and the north of colombia is in more conflict that it's been in decades (though international media has done a shit job of covering this). Without kidnapping maduro the most likely scenario is that he would have remained in power indefinitely. And any option to remove him (because democracy just is not a thing there) was basically widespread revolts where a mob gets into the presidential palace and delivers justice. Maduro being kidnapped actually moves the board enough for there to be other options. Maybe even actual elections.

I mean, it'd be technically illegal for US to kidnap putin but if they did I'd celebrate to.

That is nonsense. Civil War before Maduro's capturing was unlikely There might have been coup attempts, there might have been isolated violent clashes or such things, but there simply was no power vacuum. And if there had been a coup, similarly there would not have been a power vacuum as one faction evidently is strong enough to take power. With America's actions, they created such a power vacuum.

They do not just destabilize Venezuela here, they also destabilize columbia if Guerillas from Venezuela try to use columbia as hiding place depending on how the situation will keep unfolding.

And the idea that this will lead to free elections that will help any civillian who was unhappy with Maduro is mindboggingly naive. The current leadership is against the wall and committed to keep power of Chavesmo. Trump wants exactly that situation so he can bully them around. Why would either they or Trump be interested in a free election? That would only apply if there was an oppositional figure that wants to sell the whole country to the US. In any case represseion against civillians is going to continune and probably continue harder now no matter who ends up being in power.

I really do not know why you champion a fascist like Trump so goddamn hard. There is no meaningful difference between him and Putin anymore. Every single time Republicans commit to some cruel act of tyranny, nationally or internationally, you defend it as if it is nothing. The republicans put America onto the trajectory of oppressive regimes like Russia, Venezuela or the like, so what even if your problem with Maduro in the first place? You seem to find it find if Trump does it.

That's a separate matter from who regarded him with any sort of criminality - the only country that did is the US

It doesn't matter what ways there are to remove a president that can't be voted out. There's tons of countries with what many would consider illegitimate elections, and the US doesn't just kidnap those people. You keep talking about how evil Maduro is without realizing this had nothing to do with him, he was just an obstacle to oil. Not a single person with any pull in the State Department gives a flying fuck about democracy in Venezuela.

Celebrating kidnapping Putin is kind of an insane take man....

Clarification, the most likely scenario if maduro wasn't taken was him being in power for the rest of his life. Basically another castro. The point I was going for is that otherwise non violent ways to remove him at this point in time are basically exhausted.

Also, I am not championing trump. I've barely even mentioned him. I do not like or care for 95% of the stuff he has done and as far as I can tell the bulk of what he has done does not lead to a working democracy.

I am fully aware that for trump this is mostly about oil. That's not news. Trump's a greedy, amoral narcissist without a single democratic bone in his body. That simply doesn't make a difference to me, I'll take the win that maduro is gone (at least until democrats free him).

In just 5 days Donald the Hero has changed Venezuela for the better:

El Helicoide was a famous place, aside of a jail, but to conduct tortures with electrocution to dissidents of Maduro and the Chavez tyranny. Now, as you see, this victims are reuniting with their families and some trying to leave the country because not everyone was venezuelean.

The scene is a tearjerker, pure joy.

_____________________________________________________________________

But this:

This is the most important thing for peace to the country is to stop and tame this guy. Marvellous job, Donald :lovebunny

_______________________________________

Meanwhile the bad guys:

Hope they fail to make a precedent. Just because they hate the one in charge, it doesn't credit them to stop the strongest country to retain the title and restrict themselves.

The reality is that corrupt governments that exist in places like Venezuela and in other Central/South American countries in the past are a direct byproduct of western hegemony.
If what you meant is that USA has intervened in latin american countries in the past, that is true, but not in the exaggerated way that you put it. Greedy people are the root of corruption, not just in governments but in any hierarchical system.
For a society to work properly, there must exist justice, not democracy, justice.

Needless to say that corruption and justice are antagonized. So, when justice is the goal, there is little to no room for doubt about what needs to be done.

I mean, it'd be technically illegal for US to kidnap putin but if they did I'd celebrate to.
It would be fun to watch.
Can you imagine Africa and the middle east without their usual weapons provider? That would shift balance in several countries. That is something that would be written in the annals of history without a doubt.

Still, he's bigger piece most affected by this. Read that threatened with missiles to any ship 'kidnapped' by US army forces, wonder if he will keep behaving like that :lmao

And now the most likely scenario is that his powercircle will keep power for the rest of their (younger) life with additional repression and higher instability. What is the point here? Maduro getting ousted would be fine if it came out of Venezuela, creating a power vacuum is never going to solve anything and it wasn't the US point to begin with to better the living conditions inside Venezuela. It will make things worse out of purely evil motives. How can you defend that?

And you ARE. You preface it every time by saying you are aware he has "not the best motives" or anything like that that, but whenever anyone here talks about US cruelty against any latin american person, you always defend it. Whether it is ICE or this. And you not caring IS the problem here. You should care about a fascist US leadership that decides laws do not apply to them, ransack immigrants like the gestapo and use their military to bully other nations into compliance, going as far as to just kidnap foreign leaders. The current US government is a way bigger threat for the world and Latin America in particular than Maduro ever was, and this is coming from someone who agrees Maduro is an authoritarian leader whose violence against his own people is indefensible. But the US makes these even worse, both with their sanctions and their actions right now.

As I said, there are other scenarios than what you are suggesting now. Whereas before there were only the two, with the most likely one being maduro in power for a lifetime. I am happy to roll the dice on this one while being fully aware things could take a turn for the worse. I'd rather have a small chance of things improving than no chance at all.

I don't need you putting words in my mouth, I am not championing trump. And in spite of the crying about ice and immigrants... the reality is that people aren't jumping to the gaping death trap that is the darien gap anymore and I am happy about that. Don't get me wrong, I would have preferred other means to get this under control than what trump did (which I talked about before). But where is democrat policy on this? Since the obama days all democrats have done is give obama shit over deportations and as far as I can tell actually embraced open border policy. Even though, laughably, more than half of latinos at the US don't want that and certainly wouldn't ever have wanted that for their home countries. That said, I am fully aware that trump has not fixed the actual core of the immigration problem at the US which is companies getting away with hiring illegal immigrants. But democrats have zero policy to fix this and would probably rather not out of some absurd fear of this being racist so... I'll take the wins I can get.

Trump being a bigger threat to the region is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. Which is not to say trump isn't a threat but, come on, maduro has been using his position to destabilize the region for decades now. Destabilization in the region is how he got to advance his political agenda. Next you are going to tell me castro was a humanitarian or that che guevara was an inspiring revolutionary rather than a vicious bloodthirsty monster the world is better off without.

But that is magical thinking. Yeah, maybe if i shoot someone they will find cancer in the hospital and it ends up saving them. But probably not. There is no credible scenario that would have the situation improve due to the US attacks because none of the problems that kept Maduro in power in the first place were solved, but some of them were worsened.

I am not putting words in your mouth, i am describing what you do. Every single cruelty the US commits against southern americans gets defended by you, blissfully ignoring america's descent into fascism. Trump employing fascist means, putting lots of immigrants into concentration camps, killing lots of them in the process, is "not your preferred means". Great. You still describe being against Trump's personal Gestapo as "crying" and pivot to complaining about democrats. You are not taking wins here, you are defending violence and fascism just because you have some gripes about the former US border policy. You are no different from people who champion Putin or Maduro because "at least someone is standing up to the US, I am taking wins when I can get them". But that is horrible.

Trump destabilizes the whole of Southern America, as is a US habit but gotten way worse under him. The US under Trump meddles relatively openly in elections, it supports rightwing oppositional figures to underminde even democratic leftist governments, it started armed conflicts in venezuela and intends to now use the military in Mexico against Mexico's will, it pardoned actual narco criminals like Hernandez, it openly bullies the whole region in order to coerce them into trade "deals" and giving up their ressources. Trump also committed to aid cuts that worse refugee waves because the poorer southern countries have less possibilities to offset social problems, increasing migration pressure inside the region and also towards the US (so they have to be shot down at the border).

Maduro didnt do anything close to that level of destabilizing. Maduro's actions led to a refugee wave (so did the US historical actions of regime changes and meddling) and he has tensions with some neighbouring countries like Guyana and Columbia. That is pretty much it, his actions are tightly regionally contained and nowhere near to the US violence in dimension or even intent. It is not like Maduro wanted that refugee wave to happen while Trump very much wants to escalate tensions for example with Mexico.

And yet, today there are reports that hundreds of political prisoners have been released in venezuela and more are coming. Granted, the situation is highly volatile and could be reversed but that's something that would never have happened with maduro in power. it's true that the things that got maduro/chavez in power haven't been solved but on the other hand, those can't be solved while maduro is in power either.

I've never supported trump putting people in concentration camps (not now and not when he did it in his past term). What I have supported (same as always) is illegal immigrants being deported. Which I also want to see happening in my country and as far as I am concerned is reasonable policy. I also certainly agree that pardoning hernandez is incredibly wrong.

I mean, that's just not what trump has been doing with tariffs in the region. Don't get me wrong, what trump is doing to international trade is wrong, just not in the way you say. Trump's stance was "we will match tariffs product for product". Which is stupid and can have catastrophic political and social consequences with trade partners because generally negotiations for this are not product for product but rather exchanging concessions across different products. In that sense what you mention about cheap resources... doesn't really adjust to any reality where US businesses are exchanging goods and services with south and central american businesses. Where what you say does apply is in oil and mining though even then this is more about drilling contracts than the actual price of oil (of course, selling oil cheap is directly against the interest of drilling companies).

Maduro absolutely has been at that level of destabilization. It's simply not as overstated as cuba with soviets through the cold war. Just in general left wing movements in central and south america have historic ties to drug related enterprises. This is why it's so easy to find left wingers who romanticize guerillas or warmongers like guevara or castro and so on. These brand of politicians are known to give guerillas safe havens in their territories. Harboring guerrillas and supporting them beyond venezuelan territory is a major issue in the region. Venezuela also engages in funding of foreign political parties. Guerrilas also use drug money to fund parties friendly to their cause across relevant territories. Heck, venezuela supports cuba via cheap oil. For the past decades venezuela has been acting basically like temu soviets through the region.

Writing a sentence like this and being earnest about it just says to me that you're ideologically captured. I've probably learned more about you than I have about Venezuela.

But you cannot just take one aspect. That is like saying "i never defended Putin trying to take the whole of Ukraine, but I hope he can get rid of Zelenskyy because Zelenskyy is corrupt". Because these things are not isolated from one another. There is a whole Agenda and if someone said that they think there might now be a less corrupt Ukraine under Russian influence, he would be naive for thinking that. Because that is not the Russian plan, just like a democratic, independent Venezuela goes directly against what the US government is trying to do there.

If Maduro had been toppled from resistance inside Venezuela, that would be fine as it would still be an independent country. But now, even if there are free elections, it does not matter so much anymore because any government would have to fear being killed by Trump if they do not give their ressources to the US. Such a government will require violence againt oppositionals even more because its legitimacy will always be in dispute.

I am not talking about the tariffs. Those are bad, but at least they are legal. I am talking about Trump openly using Venezuela as a threat to democratic countries like Mexico, saying that maybe if Claudia Sheinbaum does nto play along, they can just attack Mexico, too. Same for Columbia. And my problem here is that I think you do not take the severity of this savagery seriously. This is not just "bad" or "stupid", that is a man using military threats or even means against countries that didnt do anything close to that. And not just in a local dispute either, but for the whole continent. Venezuela was the easiest target, that is why he uses Maduro as a precedent to show that he can just use the military to get rid of leaders he does not like. You can imagine how that influences deals. They are not deals anymore but terms dictated by America, making sure to secure ressources in Souther America by illegal threats.

And I don't get how you can be happy about that just because it hits a political figure you hate first. The scale of that is worse than anything any Leftist strongman in Southern America has ever pulled. There is no equivalent to that, not even when you look at Russia's or China's meddling. Yes of course these states play political power games in the region and I am not condoning any guerilla violence, but you don't see any leftist country just trying to kidnap Milei or support a coup in Bolivia because MAS got ousted. Having friendly relations with Guerillas or other autocrat governemnts is not the same as using military power or secret operations to topple governments or whip them in line.

I live a mile away from where Renee Nicole Good was murdered.

ICE specifically went to the Powderhorn neighborhood looking for queer people to antagonize, hurt, and ultimately kill.

Not feeling great, y'all. Helluva time to be working through one's transness.

as far as I can tell actually embraced open border policy.
There Is. No. Fucking. Open. Border. There never was. "As far as I can tell", maybe know what the fuck you're talking about before posting about people "crying about ICE". This is about as laughable as calling Biden or Kamala a radical leftist communist and then shrugging at that claim with no further scrutiny.

Come back and talk flippant when they murder your neighbor in broad daylight and untrained murderous jackasses from all over the country swarm your city for no fucking reason.

I've never supported trump putting people in concentration camps (not now and not when he did it in his past term). What I have supported (same as always) is illegal immigrants being deported.
"I casually see others as less than human, but I draw the line at actually understanding the sickening logistics of how deportation is carried out". What do you fucking think would happen optimally? "Just the criminals"? "Just the illegals"? Naive garbage. This is how that delicious deportation sausage is made, dude. If you want "all illegals deported", that is PURE fascism and this is how that is carried out. Whine about the cow being slaughtered while scarfing down your shit ideology burger.

If only the concentration camps were relaxation camps then it'd be okay!

People aren't illegal, and certainly not on stolen land. The US is immigrants, always has been and will be. Move out to the fucking boonies and stay away from the cities that benefit from other cultures if you want to be in some insular shithole without "illegals".

Marvellous job, Donald :lovebunny
You know somebody has solid political takes when they talk about their favorite Politics Man like he's their favorite Politics Streamer. Incredible brainrot

I mean, it'd be technically illegal for US to kidnap putin but if they did I'd celebrate to.
I would expect no less than a child's view of mutually assured destruction. Good fucking lords, "technically illegal"? Yeah dude I'm sure nuclear annihilation is "technically illegal" too

Dems will shoot themselves in the foot, ask how that happened, and blame others for the injury. Clinton did it, Harris did it, Cuomo probably did it. etc.

Mamdani didn't and he had a looooooot of opposition from both reps and dems as well as dozens of millionaires and billionaires. And hey, got one thing done already with the pre-school thing for parents in New York. Hopefully he can get some of his other promises done as well, working together with the Governor. And that people in the US slowly realize that "socialist" doesn't automatically mean "evil".

Mamdani is DSA, not really a true Liberal Democrat until he decides it's politically convenient to be. That or decides he's a careerist. This is a pessimistic view on him but I know better at this point.
