Choosing just one to vote for was harder than I thought it would be...

I like the range of different styles - but where were the limericks?
There was an old man from Frome
Who wanted to marry the moon.
So a ring he did buy
And to woo he did try
What a ridiculous buffoon

A Psalm of Life

What The Heart Of The Young Man Said To The Psalmist.

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world’s broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!

Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,— act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o’erhead!

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.

The Day is Done

The day is done, and the darkness
Falls from the wings of Night,
As a feather is wafted downward
From an eagle in his flight.

I see the lights of the village
Gleam through the rain and the mist,
And a feeling of sadness comes o'er me
That my soul cannot resist:

A feeling of sadness and longing,
That is not akin to pain,
And resembles sorrow only
As the mist resembles the rain.

Come, read to me some poem,
Some simple and heartfelt lay,
That shall soothe this restless feeling,
And banish the thoughts of day.

Not from the grand old masters,
Not from the bards sublime,
Whose distant footsteps echo
Through the corridors of Time.

For, like strains of martial music,
Their mighty thoughts suggest
Life's endless toil and endeavor;
And to-night I long for rest.

Read from some humbler poet,
Whose songs gushed from his heart,
As showers from the clouds of summer,
Or tears from the eyelids start;

Who, through long days of labor,
And nights devoid of ease,
Still heard in his soul the music
Of wonderful melodies.

Such songs have power to quiet
The restless pulse of care,
And come like the benediction
That follows after prayer.

Then read from the treasured volume
The poem of thy choice,
And lend to the rhyme of the poet
The beauty of thy voice.

And the night shall be filled with music,
And the cares, that infest the day,
Shall fold their tents, like the Arabs,
And as silently steal away.

we definitely need multiple voting for this.
Same.

Suggestion:

If there will be any contests in the future that will have entries this many or even more, I suggest Community Award-esque kind of voting that have at least two rounds of voting. Being able to vote at least two or three in the 1st round would be nice then one final vote in the next round.

Judging:

Entry 1: Watchful Moon by danzouismadara

The eerie moon.
The chill in the air.
The silent light,
with a tinge of despair.

The little ladies of the night,
lingering in the beautiful morbid light.
As they abhor their world,
and cling to spite.

The predators of the night,
The nocturnal urge to fight.
Even with moonlight so bright.

The moon watches those of the night.
Even in the darkest of nights.
Where nothing seems right.

This is more of a "night" themed poem than a "moon" themed poem in my opinion.

Entry 2: Not a poet, but meh by zimbardo

Too far to grasp
Ethereal light bathing my spirit with its coldness
The chill reminds me of my fragility

The first line doesn't really fit the last two lines.

Entry 3: Moon by Utsune

My faithful light
Over the mountains you stand watch
On the water surface lodged
Not tonight

My faraway dream
Outside the realms of reality
Offers unworldly serenity
Not what it seems

My lullaby
Of faded memories sing
On legend's soaring wings
Not my sky

Me
On the road of lonesome dark
Oblivious to your tender hark
Not me
Memes

Not like this

Only the first stanza was about the moon.

Entry 4: Lunar's Touch by Holt

The glow of the moon is a soothing sight
It is not audacious nor braggadocios
It's not so loud that you would notice it instantly
But slowly and surely, it's silvery radiance bathes you, reaching into your very core
And her pearly beads of light ignite your heart in mild fierceness.

As you gaze at her glorious form,
Your eyes see the beauty in nature
You behold it's brilliance in a way that the sun would never permit.
She is like a magnificent jewel without equal
And you are dumbfounded at its magnificence.

She speaks to your soul of love and secret things,
In that moment, you are complete.
An encounter with her can not be described with mere words.
Even a fleeting glance adorns your soul in eternal bliss
You become one with her and can taste the divine life she embodies.
Lunar is a indeed creature of perfection and reverence.

2nd Place.

The lines are good but they are too long and you lack rhymes. Great 2nd stanza especially the 3rd line, metaphors and usage of the main theme of your admiration towards the moon.

Entry 5: Selene by riki

I used Tagul to make the crescent moon shape (well, tried to, anyway).

Good overall but this is more of a "night light" themed poem than a "moon" themed poem.

Entry 6: Moon: Mystery by Charlie

Mysterious object in the night's sky
Always illuminated by the suns light.
Fixated waters of Gaia caught in your ever present gravity, tidally.
With low and high tides you decide how our oceans roar day and night.
Gave up on this halfway - felt like it should have a more completeness to it. :XD.
Also thanks for riki for reminding me. <3!

3rd Place.

One of the entries that really focus on the "moon" theme. Nice mention of the reliance of the moon to the sun and the tides. Lots of potential, too bad you gave up halfway.

Entry 7: The search on that night by Lovemagi

Oh moon light, oh moon light
I really can’t find my spoon tonight
That day, that beautiful light
I finally could find my teddy bear this night
Oh my god a poem contest. Now I neeeeed to share my poem. It has a very deep meaning, just saying.
I really did my best on this one. Took me 1 hour 10 seconds to make this one~~ ;-;

Funny.

Entry 8: The dark side by Asclepius

There you are every night
Sometimes full, other times new
Some clouds try to hide you from my sight
But i'm sure your light will break through

You know my body and soul
There is nothing i can hide
So, why do you cover a side,
Not showing me the whole?

1st Place!

I really like the way you use the "phases of the moon" as the main theme of this poem. Nicely done! You got my vote! I hope you win!

Entry 9: Bloodstained moon by ladylola

As I walk through the valley of shadows
I think about what would be my tomorrow
The cold chilled air fills me with anguish
As I realize that I will soon perish

Alone and forsaken
I roam the earth looking for a kindred soul
I feel my body shaking
As if I’m about to get swallowed whole

Up in the pitch black sky
The moon shines high
It’s ghastly appearance fills me with dread
For it has donned the color red

The moon’s presence comforts me, lulls me
I feel its grasp on my body
And I wish for it to hear my plea
That I would finally be delivered of my agony

My consciousness is dissolving into nothingness
I can finally taste the eternal sleep.
I wake up breathless
Finally free from the hunter’s dream.

Best in rhymes. But the poem seems to focus more on "loneliness" than the "moon."

Entry 10: Moonsong by takneeque

why is the moon alone?
what made it so placid
and in turn making me so
would i be it's shadow?

would a song do it justice?
can i be more inane..
this tune is but rational
would a thunder end this game?

no clouds betray my moon
atleast,none alight off my mind
with these eyes,i freely scour
only a whole i see uncovered

it sought the lone of the dark
for who wishes it in daylight?
hidden is thus it's fate
and mysterious is this pleasure

this milky gaze upon us
funnels my heart eons away
seeking a stone among the stars
i chase the legend of a rock

Lack of rhymes and a one central focus.

Entry 11: Our Moon by Danmyao Axe

I see the moon and I remember
I remember of that nights

The nights which enlightened us
The nights which embraced us
The nights which kissed us

The nights which loved us
It loved you and me
Only you and me...

But that moon vanished
It vanished and take away our dreams
And then we were separated... at least for the time being...
For the time being...
A try of make some poetry (my first in english) :>

The poem focused more on the themes of "nights" and "separation."

Entry 12: She, I, haiku and the autumn night by TSPanda

The leaves and wind dance
Moonlight shimmers through the clouds
The air is chilly

The clouds pass over
A serene moon fills the sky
Delightful quiet

Lovely autumn night
A soft breeze envelops us
But she stays asleep

Softly, she murmurs
The swing and cicadas creak
Barely audible

Clouds cover the moon
The leaves cease to rustle too
My shoulder goes numb

By chance I saw Farf and Charles talking about this, figured I'd give it a shot

Haiku has always been my preferred mode of poetry, although I lack the necessary eloquence to do it properly lmao

Credits go to my shoulder for not giving out lol

Okay overall. But it's another poem that focused more on "night" than the "moon."

Entry 13: Requiem of the Moon: Reunion with the Sun by Hakuteiken

Under the moonlit night
Stars flickering around my eyes
Vast skies reaching my heart
Echoing with your sound and soul

As the moon dances, and my gaze follows
As the sun waits, and the night sky is filled with hopes
Now, the reflections are coming to life
Over this matte canvas before me
Over this wisp of shade that trails the night's sea

Under the moonlit night
With your passion by my side
Love washing away my loneliness
Waving at me with farewell at sight

As the sun rises, and the curtains are no more
As the moon fades, and the morning sky is with splendour
Now, the echoes are dying out
Inside this withering white on the scattered black
Inside this rain of light that leads the day's path

I actually ran through this a couple of times to try and set it to music through humming, but since I'm no musician (or a poet, at that), it never gave satisfying results. Nevertheless, I managed to smooth it out partly, but it still feels better when it is solely treated as a poem.

Good but the poem focused more on the theme of "dawn and dusk."

Entry 14: MY SHINING STAR by gnut
Full as you can be
Our guiding light through the night
I admire the moon

The last line did not fit the whole poem. It sounded like, "By the way, I admire the moon." :XD

Entry 15: Reflection by kannazuki

People know permanence
Yet also know change
With romance and wrath
By schedule, by phase.
Flickering attention,
Revolving of mind
Lone focus rewarded;
Once shrewd now twice numb

Your waves won't drain oceans
To swallow lands whole!
Winds cannot move skies
To pale, flush, or weep.
You emit permanence,
In stages you change;
Naught being eternal,
All time will judge truth

Good but this is more of a "change, permanence" themed poem than a "moon" themed poem.

-

A lot of the entries focused more on the things that are related (night, darkness, night light etc.) to the theme (moon) than in the theme itself.

I'm not bothered by that assessment. I would not have participated in this to write about moon itself, anyway, so yeah, there is that.

It's rare to receive feedback for things like this. Just want to say that's greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time with all fifteen poems. Your feedback helps me confirm the idea behind my first stanza is not immediately apparent (which is indeed one of the things I'd have liked to work on if I had more time since I wasn't trying to be obscure here as I usually am).

Now if it was just me, I wouldn't say anything, but I was under the impression the whole point was for writers to expand on the central concept as they will. In fact, I thought of writing about werewolves' relationship to the moon as a joke, but when I saw zimbardo comment about the same thing in this thread earlier, I was concerned someone else might do/already did the same thing. (So instead I wrote about humans' relationship to the moon since the famous changeability of the moon but also its permanence were its most interesting possible aspects to me and I didn't want to drop them, but sadly I was drawing a blank on metaphysical conceits.)

thanks for the feedback man..i did get somewhat disconnected with the flow and i could have also polished it more material-wise...but i'll stand by my stuff coz the theme was already stated and it had been a long time since i wrote a poem..so..i deserve my verses. :)..your feedback is definitely gonna help me improve on it.thanks again.:)

about the focus on the theme i'll say what almost everyone is gonna say..interpretation and imagination. :)

Lol you sure look deep into things.
Regarding my poem yes it seems I focused on the rhymes hehe. Dunno but maybe I associate the moon with loneliness.:p
Besides I already explained where the inspiration came from, my point wasn't to describe the moon but rather tell a story, and make the moon pretty much a person of its own.
And for someone who was half trying the result isn't so bad.:verily
But thanks for taking the time to judge all of our poems. And regarding to the part about not focusing enough on the moon itself, well obviously each person has his own interpretation of what would be a moon poem. Some things are hard to dissociate from the moon like darkness etc. So it's not offtopic I would say. And if we all only described the moon in the most typical way, it wouldn't offer much variety. We'd all end up doing the same thing.
Last but not least, for me it was mostly for fun that I decided to make a poem, since I wasn't sure if I'd be able to. I think we also have to take that into account, that while this is a contest, we also should try to have fun, which I can tell some of us did. Really loved some of the less serious poems.

My favourites were danzouismadara, Utsune, Panda and kannazuki, but having a single vote, I had to go with danzouismadara. I think his poem captured the theme in the most subtle way.

I actually liked and voted for Utsune's poem. To me it seemed a complete, yet subtle ode to the moon. But hey-ho, each one interprets it in a different way...and that's the beauty of it!

Hmm are we going to reveal all of our votes, before the voting is even done? Just asking, because it seems it's more fun to be completely in the dark in that regard. :amuse

:notsure why you're salty but I just asked in case it was ok to reveal our votes. :)
Comment was heavily biased. Not to mention that poems can be formed with numerous metric lines not only the rhyme.

There's a MOON in every stanza if you haven't noticed, I made bold the first letter of each line at one point just in case it wasn't noticeable, until takneeque reassured me the subtlety was fine before I reverted the change.

Comment was heavily biased. Not to mention that poems can be formed with numerous metric lines not only the rhyme.
Are you talking about my comment, or Faust's? I gotta confess I'm a bit lost here. :worrybunny

I didn't even take rythme or anything into consideration, yeah I did it mostly for the lulz. :XD

And one person's opinion shouldn't spoil the fun for everyone.;)
