Neinhart was taken out in base mode, and Neinhart was enchanted by Irene to be beyond that of Brandish.
The punch itself had quite a lot of force behind it. Much more then the punches he is using on Zeref, almost akin to one of those mini FDK moves he used on the fodder at the start of the second invasion.

I didn't find it obvious that August could have beaten down on Gildarts. If August could have easily dealt with Gildarts without resorting to his suicide attack, then it makes no sense why he didn't.
lol what? I told you, its the plot. August was literally undamaged from an attack that was not only Gildartses strongest attack to date, but an attack that packed so much power it completely disabled his own mechanical arm (i.e. Gildarts couldn't use a stronger attack if he died trying, logistically impossible). Now I ask you, is your explanation for August using his kamikaze seriously because he couldn't deal with a character who not only couldnt damage him with his strongest attack, but lost both an arm and the only means of him doing any damage to August in said futile attempt in the first place? Surely you jest.

I repeat my stance, August could take Gildarts with just his physicals based on what has been shown. You'd be hard pressed to prove otherwise given that Gildarts broke his arm without putting a dent in August.

Zeref was able to take Igneel-powered Natsu sending him through a mountain. That attack had far greater AoE, and Igneel's power is far greater than Gildart's power, and Zeref recovered in a swift fashion. Zeref has the greater durability feat.
Looks more like a hill in all honesty. Gildartses regular unnamed crash punch Pre-TS was able to fracture a small mountain upon impact. That was Pre-TS Gildarts, and an unnamed attack......if you want to talk AoE. Don't get me wrong, IgNatsu one-shots Tartarus Gildarts, but your evidence here is dodgy.

Minor scratches aren't really anything. The only time Zeref seemed to have his composure compromised was after Natsu went FDK mode. Up until then, he was still in good fighting shape. If you want to get super technical, technically Zeref took zero damage from the whole exchange because his immortality healed him up afterwards.
He seems pretty scuffed up all over. Like he had just taken a roar or something. It didn't hamper his abilities much (seemingly) but I can just as easily attribute that to his endurance (although its likely a mix of both). Thats not really getting technical, thats just blatantly got nothing to do with durability.

Even so, merely being scratched by Natsu's attacks doesn't discount your durability. I don't doubt that Natsu was putting quite a bit of power into his attack against Neinhart, but what makes you think he wasn't against Zeref?

First of all, I don't believe August was undamaged. It's simply hard to tell if he had any scratches on him due to the way he's coloured. Also, I'm not saying that Gildarts would have beaten August. I'm saying August didn't have the offensive means of taking down Gildarts without resorting to Ars-Magia. He still needs to do enough damage to Gildarts to take him out, and Gildarts can still use crash and disassembly to defend himself. So the reason August resorted to a suicide attack was because he considered it the only way to deal with Gildarts. If there was another way, he wouldn't have needed to kill himself.

If you think August could have kept Gildarts down with just his hand to hand combat, then I'm going to have to disagree. Even if August can throw Gildarts around, he hasn't shown to be dealing massive amounts of damage with his hand to hand attacks. I just don't see how August is going to deal enough damage to keep Gildarts down without resorting to what he did.

I was specifically comparing the AoE Igneel-powered Natsu's attack to the AoE of Gildart's True Heaven. If you want to get super technical, Natsu's own power was able to shatter Ikusatsunagi, and Ikusatsunagi towers over any mountain. Also AoE isn't my only argument. My argument is also that Igneel's power is far greater than Gildarts'. This along with the fact that the AoE of the attack was also greater, and that Zeref went on multiple attacks afterwards - that's what makes Zeref's durability more impressive.

Look, if you don't count this as a feat of tanking, then there is very little in this series that you can count as tanking. Zeref has a couple of lines on his face and arm, but otherwise he looks perfectly fine. Even if Zeref received very minor scratches from that attack, there's still the fact that Igneel is still many magnitudes stronger than Gildarts (even current Gildarts), and Natsu was wielding Igneel's power. Zeref also took multiple hits from Igneel powered Natsu.

August high diff

Irene is portrayed to be weaker than August. She obeyed August's commands, and he's the spriggan leader. She basically had no say in August's commands, and accepted following him, showing there is a level of difference in power.

Not to mention Erza and injured wendy attacks harmed her, while August tanked everything like a boss from much superior character in Gildartz.

I never said he wasn't against Zeref. But this is Neinhart and Zeref. When Natsu punched Ajeel he wasn't that much more scuffed up then Zeref.

First of all, I don't believe August was undamaged. It's simply hard to tell if he had any scratches on him due to the way he's coloured. Also, I'm not saying that Gildarts would have beaten August. His body looked as glossy as always, so I see no evidence that he was damaged. Even if he was damaged, it doesn't really make a difference. The bolded is just as ridiculous as just saying August couldn't have won (since its basically the same thing). August has shown he can use magic to damage Gildarts, Gildarts would have went down eventually. I repeat, Gildarts had lost an arm and had no way of damaging August, the notion that August was pressed to commit suicide to defeat him is absurd. Its the equivalent of Acnologia tanking a heavily battle worn Natsus strongest attack and last resort and then using a roar to destroy him, and you saying that he wouldn't have won if he didn't use the roar. Or him needing that roar he used to bury Igneel after ripping half his body off. Or him needing to use magic to defeat Irene. Come on dude.

If you think August could have kept Gildarts down with just his hand to hand combat, then I'm going to have to disagree. Even if August can throw Gildarts around, he hasn't shown to be dealing massive amounts of damage with his hand to hand attacks. If he continuously beats on Gildarts he is obviously going to kill him. Gildarts doesn't have unlimited endurance.

I was specifically comparing the AoE Igneel-powered Natsu's attack to the AoE of Gildart's True Heaven. The point is that if a regular unnamed attacks from Tartarus Gildarts has pretty insane AoE (by FT standards at least) it really isn't a factor here, since the attack Gildarts used on August is quite obviously stronger.

Look, if you don't count this as a feat of tanking, then there is very little in this series that you can count as tanking. He wielded a portion of Igneels power, not the whole thing.

@The President

Look, I'm willing to concede that August is stronger than Gildarts and would have beaten him had the fight continued because you do bring up pretty good points. However, I'm still not convinced that August has the best durability bar Acnologia. There's Igneel himself who survived 20 minutes of combat with Acnologia. There's also Zeref being able to tank Igneel-powered Natsu's attacks. It's true that Zeref got minor scratches from that attack, but can you really say that he didn't tank the blow? He's smiling, and he immediately launches an attack of his own. If this isn't an example of tanking, then very little in this series counts. I think the difference between Igneel's power and Gildarts' arm is more than enough to offset the few minor scratches Zeref has.
Natsu's attack sent Zeref through the side of a cliff, through solid rock. Gildarts' punch didn't really have the same scale. You can tell just by looking at it. Even if you say that Gildarts has other attacks that have greater AoE in Tartarus, but so too does Natsu without Igneel's power. Even if we disregard AoE altogether, there's still the fact that there is an immense power gap between Igneel and Gildarts. You might say that Natsu didn't get all of Igneel's power but he got enough to kill Zeref, who is immortal. It would be considerably less difficult for Natsu to kill someone on Zeref's level who is less than immortal. You also have to consider that Gildarts' arm isn't his main magic. We don't really know how it would stack up against Gildarts' normal attacks. It looks to be more of a form of fire magic than it does crash, and it may have just been something Gildarts improvised on the spot because it was the only thing that would have worked on August.

Acnologia was just around the corner, August was out of time(as he himself said). Its the only logical explanation for why August went for suicide. Gildarts was a powerful enough foe that August realized it would take too long to kill him conventionally, so the only solution was to kill him(and everyone else) with one blow to quickly clear any opposition and secure Fairy Heart for Zeref before Acnologia finds him and tears his immortal ass to shreds. That or PiS, August was clearly winning the fight, Gildarts and Kana landing one attack each doesnt change the fact that August had the advantage.

I guess I can agree with this. I'm just against the notion that August could have taken down Gildarts with the same ease as casting Ars Magia. It would take a drawn out battle for August to take down Gildarts. There's no reason for August to off himself if he was just going to floor Gildarts with his next punch. An attack like melt probably could have dealt with the rest of Fairy Tail's troops.

Gildarts was finished mang read page 7 of mangastream. Gildarts's only method of harming August was his left arm and after that all-out attack his left arm was completely immobile and useless. At this point he was just a walking practice dummy for August to wail on. And looking at his condition it looks like he wouldn't be able to take much more, especially since August didn't really go all out against him in the first place.

The reason August went suicidal is because that was always his plan from the start before Gildarts first interfered when their fight started. He was priming himself up for a great attack before, and even asked his fellow remaining Spriggan to sacrifice themselves for Zeref (meaning they would be victims of the AoE attack hew as unleashing).

I guess it was to finish things quickly before Acnologia arrived.

He said that he was fine but his prosthetic couldn't move. I agree that Gildarts wouldn't have beaten August because he no longer had any means to damage him. I just don't agree that August could beaten Gildarts with just hand to hand combat. He was better than Gildarts, no doubt, but he wasn't inflicting heavy damage. To actually take down someone of Gildart's level, August would have had to at least use some nukes. He would have had to at least use attacks on the level that he did against Jellal and Oracion Seis.

I can kind of see the merits on the point about Acnologia. Still, Acnologia arriving on the battlefield happened after he engaged Gildarts. He could have predicted Acnologia's arrival after the dispelling of Universe One, but since everyone was teleported to a random location there's no reason to believe that Acnologia would have been warped to Fiore. Maybe August was planning to use Ars Magia all the way back then, though tbh - he really didn't have to. I don't see why he couldn't just cast Melt at the remaining FT troops. Though admittedly, the way the ground was crumbling did resemble ars magia.

In regards to the discussion between August's durability feat vs. Zeref's durability feat, I pretty much agree with all of @Axiomus' previous posts.

August tanking the punch from Gildartz's artificial arm is nowhere near as impressive as Zeref tanking multiple punches from Igneel-powered Natsu. I don't really find that fact surprising though, considering Zeref is immortal.

If anything, it's pretty clear and obvious that Zeref's durability feat is above August's durability feat since immortality gives a wizard a ridiculous amount of durability. I actually don't find Zeref to be an impressive mage, but as far as comparing which mage tanked the stronger attack, Zeref is no doubt the winner here.

I also don't think that August can fodderize Gildartz like many seem to claim. It would take a considerable amount of effort for August to even take down Gildartz actually. As far as last chapter goes, Gildartz was probably only half-way from being completely defeated (mostly due to his artificial arm not functioning).

Gildartz has better endurance than Erza, so he definitely hadn't come close to reaching his breaking point, judging from his condition last chapter. It just happened that August decided to cut the battle short by casting Ars-Magia.

Overall, August is the superior combatant, but that's only because he is the one with a major advantage. Gildartz regular attacks have no effect on August because his copy magic allows him to neutralize most of Gildartz's spells. But even the simplest spell from August can damage Gildartz because Gildartz has no choice but to tank any incoming attacks.

So I find it extremely difficult to judge August's durability without extrapolating it, given that his general "immunity" to attacks practically replaces his durability.

For somebody like Gildartz who was at a severe disadvantage, I don't think we can say with absolute certainty that August tanking Gildartz punch is in fact the second best durability feat in the entire series.

And even if @Axiomus is willing to concede on that account, I won't because the entire battle was obviously in August's favor. In terms of magic, August has the greater hax. But in terms of skill and feats, they're not far apart, even if August is the superior one.

If we were to switch the roles, and give Gildartz immunity to August's attacks, I highly doubt his "durability feat" would be the same as it looks right now.

So I don't think that there is such a thing as August tossing Gildartz around as if he were some ragdoll or dummy punching bag. At the minimum, it would take some strain and effort for August to pull off a victory against Gildartz without suiciding himself.

The only place where @Axiomus and I pretty much differ would be Dragon Irene vs. August. I happen to think that Irene's dragon form probably won't make much of a difference for her there.

As of Chapter 527, I'm going to change my stance one last time... This is probably the only thread where I have went through and voted all three options. It's unbelieveable how inconsistent power levels are.
  • August ≈ Irene Belserion
Tanking Gildarts' Absolute Heaven is no small feat. I have to give credit where it is due. Not to mention, Ars Magia is one of the most powerful spells up to date. If August were to use this on Irene, I could definitely see them canceling out. If not, I don't think he would have enough power to defeat Irene. On the other hand, Irene wouldn't be able to beat him either due to his ability of copying magic. Overall, I'd say they are equal.

Note: This is Irene's Dragon Form I'm talking about. Her human form is definitely inferior to August.

There is no area where Gildarts is superior to August.

Magical Power - August by far (this is common sense considering we've seen people comment on August's unimaginable magical power about 20 times now. the fact that he has enough to invoke a spell that can destroy a country says it all)
Physical Strength - August by far (he was literally throwing Gildarts around in their physical confrontations)
Magic - August by far (magic that allows him to copy any caster magic along with neutralizing it and the massive repotoire of magic he possesses because of it)
Speed - August by far (he straight up blitzed Gildarts with Meteor)
Durability - August by far (he took Gildarts strongest attack and came out relatively unharmed)

He's not immune to every attack. He's only immune to caster magic. He was not immune to Gildarts punch because it came from a mechanical arm, which effectively acted as holder-type magic. Gildarts explains this in the previous chapter, so August's ability to tank his punch came from his natural durability rather than his immunity to caster magic like with FG and Crash. It's precisely why Gildarts and Cana were so stunned that he managed to easily get up while being unharmed in the slightest. You can't just dismiss August's ability in order to make Gildarts look better. It's part of his power. Do we dismiss Gildarts ability to break apart any form of magic because it's a major advantage that his opponents don't share? We certainly don't. It's part of his power.

Spin it however you want, Gildarts isn't in anyway comparable to August.

How exactly does August deal with the Queen of Dragons without DS magic?

I don't think he can. This match is between two relatively equal combatants but Irene has a fundamentally superior source of power. She wins.

I did. I deemed the proposed strategy unrealistic and far-fetched to be viable for 2 crucial reasons (there are more).

1) Serena is a relative fodder, and as a Historias a super-fodder because Historias are always weaker than the original.

2) Irene is a high Enchantress. She could easily disenchant Serena down to a lvl of a mouse.

1. No the reason why he was fodder was because it requires a lot of MP to bring in some1 at his level and plus nienhart brought back 3 spriggans (who are roughly at the same level or higher MP wise) any1 below spriggan level will be at full power. Plus august MP are way above the rest of the spriggans. also injure Wendy enchanted with one armed erza was able to put damage on her so even if god serena isn't at full power he can can out damage. Also together of the dragons she fought in the past. 2. Doesn't matter wouldn't work on the dragons she. Fought in the past she is as good as finished

I never said Gildartz was superior... That wasn't even part of my point.

I said that August isn't fodderizing Gildartz with what he has shown. I'm not taking Ars-Magia into account because he has to suicide for that spell to be successful. And if he does use Ars-Magia, it would actually be a stalemate between him and Gildartz because he also dies in the process. It's very similar to the situation between Bloodman and Gajeel.

August was immune to more attacks than Gildartz was. So obviously, as I clearly stated, August is the superior mage. But that doesn't mean he's going to treat Gildartz like a punching bag and defeat him with minimal effort.

And August having the second best durability feat in the entire series is also questionable considering his ability to neutralize spells practically replaces his overall durability. That was my point.

Was Irene able to do anything to Wendy who is far weaker than Serena? Lol nope. Serena is there for backup and supplying August with DS magic like Wendy did. August/Historia Serena >>> x infinity >>> Erza/Wendy combo.
