I agree up to a point. I mean, before meeting Luffy I bet most of he world would have seen the Gomu Gomu no mi as a useless devil fruit! Oda has come up with some very interesting ways for Luffy to take advantage of his ability to stretch, I bet he has some ideas kicking around on how to make use of his awakening already, even if it IS only turning the environment into rubber.
Sure, we are probably thinking of similar things regarding uses of the environment turning to rubber. Mostly luffy bouncing around to power up his attacks or causing his enemies to bounce of stuff. It's potentially useful but ultimately lackluster. Definitely a huge downgrade over doflamingo or katakuri turning the environment into stuff they can directly manipulate and weaponize.

I think gomu gomu was useless at first until Luffy actually trained hard to use it well. We saw how many fights he lost against Sabo and Ace because he couldn't do much with his power, but with fruits like mera mera, the user seems to be able to use it decently right off the bat.

Like we were saying before, if he can learn kami-e, he will be MUCH more formidable.

Oh I was thinking about something. In One Piece: Gold it is said that the villain awoke his devil fruit and it allowed him to control, and sense through, any gold he has touched. I know this isn’t canon, but Oda had a hand in its creation so at least it adds into the pot that awakening could be more than just “turning his surroundings into rubber. Both Doflamingo and Katakuri could create their substance out of thin air, while Luffy can’t. Makes me think that it’s at least possible that it won’t work that way for Luffy since he can’t do that. Create and control rubber I mean.

Btw, why do you think Oda decided to change Katakuri’s fruit from a logia to a “special” paramecia?

All Logias are natural elements, while Mochi is man-made.
I think you are dead on with this! I looked up the known logia fruit types, and the only one that was man made was paper, and it was from a film, and thus non-canon. Still, Katakuri is for all intents and purposes, a logia. Aside from the man-made aspect anyway.. do we know of any other paramecia that change the body and can also produce an element?

The key here is what logia, zoan and paramecia literally translate to:

Logia fruit: nature system
Zoan: animal system
Paramecia: superhuman system.

This is something which the series and series largely overlook even though it's actually a reasonably important bit of context. For instance, this sufficiently explains why katakuri isn't simple a logia user. Because his ability just isn't a "nature system".

Regarding doflamingo's explanation of awakening... Perhaps the issue here is that we shouldn't consider doflamingo to be all knowing regarding fruits. It's entirely possible his explanation of awakening was limited by his own experience. So perhaps he only spoke of his awakening or those he had seen. Which could easily not apply to the immense variety of fruits out there. Going a tad further, perhaps doflamingo did not properly understand his own ability. Where do his strings come from? Within the context of OP devil fruits aren't magic. Rather they basically make people into mutants. Within the context of one piece devil fruits work within the confines of science. So perhaps the inner workings of doflamingo's superhuman system are what allows him that specific type of awakening. As in, his body produces strings.. but from what? Probably his energy, nutrients, calories and whatnot. Which when awakened means he takes these fromt he environment and make them into strings.

Not sure of how that would apply to most paramecia though. Say, buggy... If he is able to use his ability beyond his body then that would basically be telekinesis... Alternatively if his awakening refines his ability then perhaps greater range and perhaps the ability to have all his body fly would make sense. Luffy remains a mystery though. I still lean towards my crackpot theory of vulcanization.

Please see below my view on DF awakening per DF power category - I think we should also have a sub-classification for Paramecia users (Producer, Transformer, Special) the same way there are sub-classifications for Zoans (Normal, Ancient, Mythological). Normal and Ancient Zoans should have the same kind of DF awakening upgrades whereas Mythological Zoans also look like Paramecia with their special powers (Marco can regenerate, Sengoku can create shockwaves, Kaido can create clouds to fly, Catarina Devon can transform into other people etc...). Kaido’s ability to transport Onigashima is likely a consequence of his DF awakening the same way Marco’s ability to regenerate others is likely a DF awakening.

I think that the DF awakening of Paramecia Producers and Paramecia Transformers should impact their environment as it would be an extension of their abilities outside their normal range which is their own bodies:
  • Paramecia Producers use their bodies as plants for their own elements: Doflamingo, Katakuri, Mr. 3, Magellan, Cracker
  • Paramecia Transformers alter their own bodies
    • Temporary Transformers alter their body at will: Jozu, Mr. 1, Baby 5, Buffalo
    • Permanent Transformers have their body always altered: Luffy, Alvida
For Paramecia Specials (Big Mom, Kuma, Law, Mr. 2), the DF awakening should upgrade their special abilities to grant them extended Special powers:
  • Kuma - repel intangible things (pain, fatigue)
  • Mr. 2 - change the bodies of other people
  • Big Mom - manipulate the Souls of other people
  • Pudding - alter the history of objects and change their fate (broken objects can be repaired, modified objects can be unmodified)
  • Viola - read the mind of objects and thus understand their purpose/essence (Poneglyph can be deciphered)
As a summary, all DF awakening should grant additional abilities in top of the normal DF powers. They are not to be mixed with advanced DF techniques that rely on the mastery of DF normal powers. For example, Luffy’s Gears are due to Luffy’s mastery over his normal powers which is to have a rubber body - it does not rely on awakened powers outside his normal powers (rubber body).

As far as what is used to produce the material, since you can’t create aomething from nothing (Yes, I know it’s a manga and isn’t constrained by rl laws of physics), I’ve come up with a theory:

All Devil fruit abilities stem from the persons chi (haki) or life energy. The material is created from the persons energy, which is why when someone overuses their ability they get tired, or pass out, or go all noodle-ey like Luffy. We know that with enough training someone can use kami-e to reshape their body WITHOUT the need of a devil fruit. So, with enough skill, someone could feasibly recreate Luffy’s gomu gomu no mi through kami-e alone. I think what the fruits do is force your body to do this automatically, on its own. Or possibly forces a transmutation of your haki/chi/life energy into another form, against your will, through an influx of foreign haki/chi/life energy. Since we know that objects can be imbued with haki, weapons and whatnot, this would also explain how inanimate objects can be “fed” Devil fruits. Awakening could be a way to push that same transformation onto other things, since (according to Zoro) everything has it’s own energy, and thusly can be manipulated.

Just a theory, but it makes sense right? I’m not just talking crazy?

I don't think that logic applies to luffy. Because luffy doesn't produce anything and it is constantly passively active. When luffy uses his abilities it sounds like it's just regular stamina. As in calories, enery and whatnot. Though I'd make the point that other abilities which produce stuff probably just consume the body's energy in a rather conventional way.

I don't think kami-e would allow the user to reproduce the gomu fruit. Maybe it can help you stretch or shrink but never in any way comparable to what the gomu fruit can achieve.

I have thought about Devil Fruits consuming Haki before, but I don't think it's true.

The user gets exhausted because using an ability is like exercising a muscle.

The level of Haki varies a lot between people. If Devil Fruits consumed Haki, then you expect it would reflect on the abilities. While Whitebeard could create a tsunami, a regular person with the Gura Gura no Mi would only be able to lift some water.

But as far we have been told, anyone with the Gura Gura no Mi would be able to create a tsunami. Although Blackbeard was not a regular person, he was weaker than Whitebeard, but his destructive power was identical to Whitebeard's.

In all which a Devil Fruit has been passed to someone else (Big Mom, Bentham, Bartolomeo, Sabo, Blackbeard and Shiryu), it seems the power remained the same.

We also heard one of Doflamingo subordinates saying that with the Mera Mera no Mi, he would be able to change his life.

Just had an idea! If what Doflamingo said about awakenings is true, that being that awakenings allow the power to spread outside of your body, then there are some potentially CRAZY powerful awakenings! Like the Bara bara (Buggy’s fruit) could turn a single cannonball into a bunch of smaller cannonballs. After they hit, he could force the, to reconnect like he does with his body, and do even MORE damage! Or the slip slip fruit used on bullets to give them 0 friction, effectively making them armor piercing! (Maybe anyway 😋]Anyone else have so other fruits that could get crazy powerful if awakened?

Mr. 5 bomb bomb fruit. (which was wasted as hell on that dude) Also Foxys fruit, just imagine he could make a timeslow-dome like Law.

Oh! That reminds me why I though of it at all! So if awakenings will cause the fruit to effect other things, maybe a zoan awakening is the same! That would mean the jailers aren’t actually fruit users directly, but regular people transformed into those forms by the ACTUAL fruit holder!

That makes sense given the awakened Zoans in Impel Down seems pretty weak compared to regular Devil Fruit users.

Dunno man. I think they would slaughter all "normal" folks with a zoan, like Dalton from drum, or the two guardians of alabasta.

Perhaps. But they were mostly one-shot by a pre-Timeskip Luffy. In my head it’s a possibility. Maybe not a huge one, but a theory to explore even if it turns out we realize it’s wrong. 😊

Awakening enables DF users to extend their DF powers outside their normal scope of effects. It is not the same than advanced normal DF powers which enables the users to master their normal scope of powers to create new usages. Example of advanced normal DF powers: Luffy’s Gears

Confirmed DF Awakening:
  • Katakuri/Doflamingo: their bodies can be used as plants to produce Mochi/Strings -> can turn the environment in Mochi/Strings
  • Kid: his body is a magnet -> can turn other bodies (objet/people) temporarily into magnet
  • Law: can create a room surrounding his body -> can create new types of rooms and assign them to a dedicated object (sword, Big Mom)
  • Impel Down zoans: animal form with human dexterity and improved recovery

Unconfirmed DF awakening
  • Kuma: can repel physical things -> can repel intangible things (pain, fatigue)
  • Marco: can regenerate through his phoenix flames -> can heal other with his phoenix flames
  • Big Mom: can insert soul to animate things and animals -> can consume soul "life expectancy" in one shot to recover and increase power level

Potential DF awakening
  • Viola: can read people mind -> can read object mind and understand their purpose (can read Poneglyph)
  • Pudding: can alter people memory -> can alter object memory and change their fate (burnt object is not burnt anymore)
  • Luffy: his body is granted rubber properties -> can grant rubber properties temporarily to other bodies (objet, people)

I'd add Akainu and Aokiji to "Unconfirmed", as well as probably Crocodile. And Monster Point Chopper to "Potential", maybe.

The Pudding idea is bust. She removed the moment of Reiju being shot, but the hole remained.
