Something I've been wondering.... what if luffy's devil provides the actual baseline for what awakenings for zoan look like? As in, this is pretty standard for them. With a few key differences attributed to the fruit being a mythical human god fruit in contrast to a normal animal. So this is what I am thinking:
The gist of it is that zoan awakenings give users, within the scope of the creature they take for, freedom to transform. Now here's the context:
Luffy's awakening: Freedom to will his body to stretch in any direction or form. And on top of that turning his environment into rubber and some manner of straight up cartoon physics.
ID zoan awakenings: Buff monsters with seemingly reduced intelligence.
Zoans in general have 3 forms. The base human form, a pure animal form and a hybrid form. Hybrid forms with a few exceptions are pretty standard. The exceptions here are the key. The first one worth looking at is chopper. Chopper has his pure animal form, his pure hybrid form (brain point) and his human form which looks more like a gorilla. Then we get to his other points which in part 1 he accessed via rumble ball and in part 2 he could access freely except for monster point (relevant later on).
Another instance is king. His hybrid form was not similar to pell's hybrid form. Oda in an SBS mentioned that not all zoans are the same or something to that effect.
And now luffy's zoan fruit. Through the years luffy developed multiple gears. Specially relevant is gear 4 and its multiple forms. Hyoguro compared them to wisdom kings. The implication I would argue is that luffy's gears in practice are comparable to chopper's various "points".
Then we get to kaido's comments regarding luffy's abilities in gear 4. Namely that he could direct his attacks in such a way that it didn't make sense with the properties of rubber. I think this is luffy showing a sort of partial awakening. You can also make the case that within the context of luffy's fruit he used haki to sort of mimic what his awakening would do later on. Such as adjusting his elasticity.
With this we get to chopper... In part one chopper used his rumble balls to access new forms... Which is something awakenings allow. Basically the rumble ball's actual function is to allow the user to partially access the fruit's full potential, it's awakening. Chopper, being unprepared in part one, could handle a very limited amount of this and lost control. 2 years later he grew stronger and could access all of his points except monster point without rumble ball. Basically a portion of the full potential of his fruit, his awakening, similar to how luffy did with gear 4.
King has shown an unusual hybrid form... So king is either awakened or partially awakened as well. Marco is another interesting case. So far he doesn't show a standard hybrid form but in turn he freely transforms his body parts into pheonix limbs he needs at a given time.
Now, the elephant in the room is the guards at ID. They never transformed, never spoke... The gorosei confirmed that zoan fruits have their own consciousness. So this is strong evidence of the risk of zoan awakenings, losing out to the animal consciousness within and being basically stuck in a single form. Basically zoan awakenings have unique risks to them. In chopper's case this probably wasn't as pronounced as he was an animal consciousness to begin with and in luffy's/sengoku's case odds are that the two are compatible. Maybe this explains why oda mentioned a human eating a human fruit would become enlightened... As a joke but also you kinda get an extra mind to back you up sort of. There is still the question of whether you can get taken over or possessed by a human fruit's consciousness.
This would also explain why oda never explained what would happen if other fruit users ate rumble balls... he didn't want to spoil awakenings.
