Re: Berserk Chapter 337 Discussion/ 338 Prediction

I was born in '80. Wonder if that makes me an old man. Anyways Berserk is one of the slowest released series around. Downside of Muira's highly detailed, hand drawn, no assistaints style I guess. He probably knows where he wants to go, but he wouldn't be the first writer to die before finishing his work. The other downside is that the long time between chapters makes it feel even slower paced than it is.
He has assistants, they're called Studio Gaga. Even one of his assistants became a mangaka afterwards. Not sure how much they're involved in making the manga, but I think they do the shading for the non important panels etc.

Someone quick! Invent the 'Head in a Jar' like on Futurama so we can preserve Miura for the future! :D

Of course, we may need the procedure as well in order to read the works. :XD

Re: Berserk Chapter 337 Discussion/ 338 Prediction

The whole magic/witches thing was kinda like an asspull for me. Sure the magical element was there from the beginning (Puck) but at the same time the witches are so powerful it got me wondering why they don't do anything against the apostles. Schierke is so powerful for just a kid, and even Farnese is impressive even though she just started training in magic. And I gotta admit I'm not fond of the Berserker armor either.
Finishing the manga after 25+ years isn't exactly rushing things. As long as Miura has an estimate of when he'll finish it(I'm sure he already had the ending written) I'm fine. I just hope I won't be a granny by then :heh. Or worse dead.
That was one the highlight of the manga for me to be honest :p There aren't many witches though, and some apostles are really powerful, so I don't see how they can do much

It was impressive I admit but I preferred it when Guts used to go all out like in his fight with Rosine :p I expect Elfhelm to be a place filled with magic so maybe we could see other witches there. So far we've only seen Flora who is prolly one of the strongest witches out there, Schierke could still be considered an apprentice seeing how she cannot fully control some elements she invokes . However the potential of magic is so great, it could be just the thing needed to fight off the God hand, but I guess that even the witches have limits and wouldn't stand a chance against the higher apostles like Zodd or just the GH. Now I'm really curious about the Hanafubuku king, he should be stronger than Flora and by far.To me he should be the opposing force to the God hand . It is implied that SK maybe received his "upgrade" from the elf king, or at least he has something to do with elves. So I can see Guts getting a major upgrade there on top of possibly having Caska healed.
All this talk just makes me more frustrated about the current state of things seeing how there's no sign of a chapter. And I've been waiting for Elfhelm for years just so I can see if some theories about it are right, and of course to see the story move forward on Guts end. The story on Griffith's end has already advanced quite a deal, but I hope we switch back to Guts now, even if it means not seeing Griffith's coronation. I want to see Elfhelm :emocat

So I was looking for some stuff related to Miura yesterday and I found this
I think it's a relatively new interview in two parts, and it features some mangaka who are said to be narrative consultants on Berserk. It's also a good source for information regarding his drawing process and his relationship to friends and manga authors.

Re: Berserk Chapter 337 Discussion/ 338 Prediction

No matter how you want to spin it, it's kind of a shit deal for fans to go this long with nothing. I love Berserk, make no mistake. I've been reading since the early 90's for crying out loud. I was in middle school and now I'm closer to 40. Fuck me... Just realized that. Anyway, I used to think great works of art are worth the wait and we as consumers of it should feel grateful to witness something great in our lifetime that transcends a medium.

Now? Fuck that noise... LoL! When you create a story, when you create anything for that fact that you share with others, whether or not you like it, there is an implicit agreement of a relationship. It may not be personal, mind you, but it is there. We as consumers, or even human beings follow this story. Our brains are hard wired for closure. Case and point, ever hear someone telling a story, and they're droning on, meandering, and you want to shout in their face, "get to the fucking end, man" while throttling them? It doesn't even have to be a good story, but you still want it to end. Now especially if it is a great story and you're riveted to death by it, and people keep interrupting the story-teller, do you not want to beat the living shit out of anyone who dares stop that story from being told?

He chose this medium out of passion, with a great idea and a masterful way of telling it. Whether he likes it or not, he chose something that creates an unwritten, but easily understood rule; this art is no longer for just for you, it is for them. If you want to do great artwork, fine. Do a painting or a sketchbook. If you're going to tell a story though, something that goes all the way back to the beginning of civilization, you better come correct. I'm not saying he has to kill himself with bi-weekly shit, or even monthly for that matter. He has to commit though to us as fans, to the people that pay to consume it, to giving something for people to hold on for. Because at the end of the day, your story will be what people remember more than the amazing art. It would be nice just to have updates, something that keeps us engaged and excited. It's not exciting having a joygasm then sit there wondering when the next issue comes out. I'm am anti-social prick, but even I know I'd have to do something to keep my fans engaged... as much as I would probably hate my life for it. It's an expectation they'd have of me. And they'd be totally right for it.

I used to think that but after reading some of his interviews I really feel sorry for the guy. He has no life, he never even had a GF. He says he has only 5 days off in a year, so it's not like he's sitting doing nothing. He's drawing all the time, now I don't know if this still applies, but I can see him aging along with having no social life taking a toll on him. So maybe he decided to take the time to enjoy life and what it has to offer instead of working himself to an early grave.
It doesn't mean I'm ok with the current state of things, I too would like to see more releases of Berserk but I can understand how he feels .

To be honest, I'd be fine if there were just updates. Schedule plans...anything to just wet the appetite.

Lol that would defy the point. Miura intends to make us suffer as much as possible before finishing the manga :XD

Well that's the price to pay for reading one of the best mangas of all times(if not the best :heh).

I'm just like SK. She may choose not to be sane, because she can't deal with all the horror, that's why she lost her sanity in the first place I think. If she does, she might not get back with Guts right away, I mean he tried to kill their child whom he thought was a spawn of hell, then he tried to rape her twice iirc. You can clearly see that she's afraid of him when he tries to protect her.She may remember all these things...Anyway I can't see them becoming lovebirds again so soon.
Also him being rejected might be the thing needed to bring him back to the continent and exact his revenge on Griffith, but not before making sure Caska is safe.So yeah I'm looking forward to them reaching Elfhelm, while it was cool to see Falconia I really would have preferred to see them at least get close to the island. So many years have passed and they're still not there...
Honestly I see her killing herself immediately. Or doing something to betray Guts, seeing that Griffith is inhabiting her child, she may go back to his side.

I have read the interviews. I get it, truly. At the same time, is that not of his own volition? You can see the insane progress of his artwork over all of the volumes. His skill in that regard is without question. We admire it for sure, but we aren't on here discussing his art, we are on here discussing his story. Art can be burned and lost, but we can always tell stories. I appreciate his art, but not so much I wish to see him be a hermit and live in exile to slave away at this just to have an awesome picture that I'll honesly breeze through the first time just to get more story.

This all boils down to what his priorities are. If he doesn't know where the story is going and he has writer's block, I get that. I'd be just as happy with him telling us, which knowing plenty of Japanese men I know that'd never happen. If he is prioritizing his art to the degree his story is not being told, then that's fucked up. It's his to do with as he pleases. He should just understand that in some way it diminishes his work in a way. People give up and forget. We live in a fast paced world and that's just the nature of things. I will always stick around to the end, but I totally get others bailing and forgetting about it. No updates, infrequent releases, the worry he will die before he finishes. That's hard for some to take. So yeah, I get his life kind of sucks, but he sort of made it that way. He owns his work and that is great, but if he runs himself in the ground to do it he's only hurting himself and for me, personally, I'd rather he stop writing altogether and live than to give me a story that makes the man keel over and die.

Also, on this, I agree. If this doesn't end in my lifetime I will haunt this SoB until he dies. And trust me, I live in California and I drive fast as hell. My life span is already shortened.

Well I'm not sure the art is the problem. In another of his interview he said that he didn't have an estimate about how long the manga would last, and that was way before his art became so intricate. So it might not be just the art. I feel that we're in the final arcs of the manga and if he could draw it at the "pace" he's doing it right now he could finish it in 10+ years. Also the manga isn't that long, it has 337 chapters as of now, compared to shonens who are almost at 1000 chapters mark it's not much. In the end I often hesitate about recommanding Berserk to people that I know, not just because of the mature content(if not at all) but because a lot of readers simply cannot take it when their favorite manga is on break. Although I agree Miura really excells in that department.
Also this has been pointed out before but as readers we can't really understand the reasons of the authors, because from our perspective they should finish their work asap and preferably while we're still alive. But the authors have a different way to look at things, just take GRRM as an example. To me it looks like if in order to release the manga faster Miura had to sacrifice some of its aspect like the art it would totally compromise his work and it's not something I want to see happen. I resigned myself to just accept that and try to take care of my health and not kick the bucket before he does :heh
I know this isn't helping but we really can't do much about this situation.

Guys I know that you're craving for more Berserk chapters, me too, but please try to not spam the chapter thread. The whole discussion was completely offtopic and had nothing to do with the events from the last chapter, so I moved the posts to the General Discussion Thread. You can discuss Miura's pace and everything else here, but please refrain from posting in the actual chapter thread as long as you don't intend to talk about it or an announced continuation.~ naruto-niichan

I'm actually glad I found this because now I have a place to vent my frustrations.

So I recently watched the new film series. And it has utterly and completely renewed by hatred for Griffith I tried to empathize with him but I ultimately keep coming back to the same thing. It's his fault. The one place where guts messed up was not telling Griffith why he was leaving. Not giving him an iota of understanding as to his reasons. But that's it, Griffith is the one that decided to bang Princess Charlotte because of his hurt feelings. And it just really frustrates me how he and others want to try to put on guts. Ironically, guts left because of Griffith's own words.

"A man cannot subsist on another's dream, they must follow their own dream and hold onto it as tightly as possible. For me to consider someone my friend, they must be my equal in every respect. Even if that means opposing me."

That's exactly what guts did, he considered Griffith his friend but apparently Griffith had a different criteria in that regard. So in order to prove to him that he was worthy of being considered a friend guts left to find his own path.

So none of this was really guts' fault. And it really just makes what Griffith did even more inexcusable.

Also, is it true that the film series will try to adapt the entire manga? I read this on Wikipedia so I'm going to take it with a grain of salt but if that's the case, and more movies are coming out, it's got a long way to go. A very long way. Especially considering the fact that the schedule for the manga is extremely erratic.

The only way to explain what Griffith did is because he didn't realize how important Guts was to him. He tried to pretend that it was only because he's "his", another tool he would use to realize his dream (like the rest of the BoH) but he really ended up "loving" Guts (as a friend). That's the only thing that can explain why he fucked up a plan he's been working on for years, he even had to prostitute himself in order to advance that plan. Also when he's rap...I mean having sex with Charlotte, he was thinking about Guts, but not in a sexual way lol. Even when he was about to sacrifice the BoH, he said that only one counted for him, and that was Guts. It's pretty ironic, Guts thought that Griffith didn't see him as a friend, so he wanted to be more and decided to leave to become worthy of Griffith's standards, while Griffith didn't even realize that he started seeing Guts as a friend, his only friend.
Actually this is the work of IoE who made things that way, even if Guts didn't leave and things went smoothly, up to the point that Griffith would have wanted to marry Charlotte, something would have happened that would have forced him to use his behelit. Actually from the looks of it, Griffith wouldn't have been able to marry Charlotte, as long as the old king of Midland was alive, who secretly had the hots for his daughter. So he most likely would have never agreed to marry her to Griffith, and prolly no man for that matter, because he wanted her for himself :errr
In the end my only problem with the movies is that the relationship between the characters weren't as fleshed out as in the manga or even the TV series. Not just the relationships, but the characters themselves. We barely got to know the rest of the BoH that they were aready getting sacrificed, so people wouldn't have felt that sorry for them.
I usually hate Griffith but I admit he's an interesting character, and even now I really don't fully understand what he's after, especially with the latest developments.
