I noticed this a while ago, before we knew who the Child of Prophecy really was.
Naruto made his famous claim to Neji during the Chunin exam speech that we are not tied by fate, that we can use our free will to make our own destiny here is my original post:
"When Naruto becomes hokage, won't he be proving Neji right?
During the chunnin exams, Naruto and Neji had an extended debate about free choice vs. destiny, and that Neji and Naruto were NOT bound by it...through choice Naruto could rise to become Hokage, and Neji could become more than a servant to the main branch.
But now we know Naruto is the son of Minato, who was the 4th hokage, and we know that Narutoverse history all kage's are related to their predecessors in some way (whether it be through blood or mentor-ship). So with that fact alone Naruto is destined to be hokage, whether he knows it or not.
And now we here of this Prophecy, in which one of Jiraiya's students will either save or destroy the world. It cannot be Pein*, and it is surely about Naruto. So we see that prophecies by their very nature are meant to predict and confine ones fate to....destiny.
So has kishimoto created a thematical inconsistency? Or does he actually believe in fate and destiny over free choice?
*Pein's Catch 22 of why he cannot be the chosen one. he cannot "save" the world as he and madara are the ones threatening it with their psuedo atom bomb no jutsu, so therefore by default he would be the destroyer right? wrong. if he is the chosen one that means he has to be successful, which he cannot be, because that means Naruto and the whole Narutoverse dies."
Well now we know for a fact Naruto is destined to be great, whether it is as the destroyer (not likey) or the savior (duh). So has Kishicreated a thematical inconsistency? Or is there still choice involved?
