There's no way to "see" it. Logia users are usually tangible, regular humans. Flesh and bone. They have to consciously change parts of their body or their whole body to what their fruit allows, in the same way that one would consciously tense a muscle or punch someone.

Some users, like Crocodile, have trained themselves to respond to any impact by turning the impacted area of their body to something more intangible as a reflex. This is similar to how many martial artists will instinctively strike a threat without any need for thought. If you look in the Alabasta arc, you can see both Smoker and Ace being struck through a series of walls by a surprise impact (I think it was Luffy).

Because depends on the type of the Devil's Fruit in how it would affect it. Paramecia are changes to the body, Logias are changes OF the body and Zoan is a mutation of the body. Words are picked poorly, so if you have a better phrasing please be my guest.

All the effects are different, but that is the basic thing between the types. Because Logias are changes OF the body to an "elemental" substance, I suppose it's needed to be activated by the conscious mind to re-organize the body constantly without losing any of the two forms. Crocodile trained himself to be a reflex instinct as I'm sure admirals did.
Paramecias being changes in the body means that the body doesn't change, but their properties that are not controlled by the conscious, but is a property of the same body. Even if you train a lot to make you "harder" you body wont be steel.
Zoan are mutations. Once changed, it "stays" in that stage until it's "changed" again, so the conscious only interacts with different bodies but doesn't need to hold them together as Logias.

Damn, it took me a while to find this thread. Now, I was doing some thinking about the manga and I could not help but wonder where in the hell would devil fruits come from. Now, we know for a fact they are "fruits" and fruits generally come from trees(duh, but bear with me). Now, if devil fruits being fruits come from trees then it is unlikely a devil fruit would come from a regular tree, it would have to be a special kind of tree with special properties since it is producing a fruit with a curse in it. Now, this is where it gets interesting, the manga has indeed shown a special tree with special properties. In fact, it has named 2 such trees; the adam and eve trees. Now, the other interesting part is that for the world government to not have absolute control over DF if my little theory is true is that a special mechanism would have to exist so as to spread the fruits around the world in such a way that the world government can no do anything about it. Maybe they get released into deep, sea king infested sea currents, maybe they are released as seeds to the wind and turn into fruits hundreds of miles away.... There could be other possibilities but it is up to oda.

Well I´ve been thinking for quite some time now, what "potential" lures inside some DF we have seen so. Just like Crocodile was saying that the more you train your DF the more you can use it.
We have seen some examples of usage that wouldnt come to mind at first, for example Luffy Gear abilitys. Who would have thought, that he can increase the blood preassure inside his rubber body?
Another example would be Chopper: as far as we know, Zoan-user can transform in three types (human, animal, half-half), but Chopper is now able to transform into 6 styles without using a Rumbleball.
So I thought if all Zoan user are able to transform into 6 forms. At the war, we saw Marco only transform into the 3 main forms but i consider him one of the strongest Zoan-users out there so I hope he can transform in more forms.
Another great potential lays within Smokers fruit. He can dematerialize his body and cover the whole field with smoke of fog, or even create clouds and let it rain. Also he should be able to rob the enemy from oxygen and also rob flames of oxygen (could come in handy if he fights Akainu one day).

So that´s what I think I hope you have some creative thoughts as well!

Neither creating clouds nor letting it rain are parts of Smoker's abilities. "Moku" means "Smoke", and his smoke was held back easily by Ace's flame back in Arabasta. (Ace didn't break a sweat stopping Smokers White Blow...)

I think Brook's yomi ability became the most interesting ability after the time skip for me as representation of a fruit's potential... Damn, HE'S A FRICKING GHOST(!!!) and boosts his fencing with the cold of the underworld. Can't wait to see more of it or even further development (like seizure of other bodies).

For the Ace vs Smoker part: thats why I mean it as a possiblity that rest within the DF (he couldnt do it at that time)
and for the rain part: Smoke consist of small dust particles and clouds consists of water from the air. now when water form air comes in contact with condensation particles (like dust) it will become liquid and form a cloud => a cloud appears and it can rain

I would think brook will eventually be able to posses others and objects. It seems like a natural development of his ability lol. It would be interesting if he could posses others and use their abilities lol. Of course, possesing others with DF could present problems in itself as it would imply 2 DF in one body.

my thought and theory on the origin of devil fruits is just like evrey islands has a magnetic field and each island has it own minerals plus weather and element an example earth has gold and caper and weather pattern
an advance race probably went to each island on the grand line and collected them and somehow put fruits and these properties together this is just a theory

Damn, it took me a while to find this thread. Now, I was doing some thinking about the manga and I could not help but wonder where in the hell would devil fruits come from. Now, we know for a fact they are "fruits" and fruits generally come from trees(duh, but bear with me). Now, if devil fruits being fruits come from trees then it is unlikely a devil fruit would come from a regular tree, it would have to be a special kind of tree with special properties since it is producing a fruit with a curse in it. Now, this is where it gets interesting, the manga has indeed shown a special tree with special properties. In fact, it has named 2 such trees; the adam and eve trees. Have anyone thought of the Poo Poo fruit yet in the last possible devil fruit thread? Besides its powers... I was thinking it must be the most awful of all devil fruit to take a bite out of for obvious reasons. I know this seems like a joke and it may be farfetched but Oda have come up with some things that are out of the box. I know that Oda seems to base off his logia fruits off of elemental stuff like light(ning), fire, ice, etc but Caribou's Swamp Swamp fruit doesn't seem much of a element to me, nor does Akainu's magma fruit for the matter so that is why I suggest the poo poo fruit to be a logia if not a paramecia. I'd be content with either actually. I know it's pretty weird to just have such an idea but it came to me and I thought hey this can be a very fun power for a future character and it'll bring a hell of a laughter to the crew if this person joins the mugiwaras.

As a Logia:

1. User can turn into shit (Hard solid chunks or diarrhea, you choose) and produce it.
2. This is extra useful because A, it is smelly and that may turn the tide of a battle and B, maybe people won't run away from smelling the user from afar but after a fight (with or without haki) people may have a tough time cleaning all the crap that was on them making them think twice about fighting such an opponent again.
3. Like some other logias or paramecias you can cause the enemy to slip and fall except this time they fall into some deep shit.

As a Paramecia:
1. Same as the above except the user cannot turn into its said element.

I think I can think up of more things for what this power can do but I'm lazy...Hmm actually I wonder what would happen if the user gets caught on fire...
I can see a certain situation already...
