Different cases meet Different results. Which brings to my single point. Natsu used DFKM mode against War Good, because of the spell itself and the name of it. Natsu used LFD Mode against Gemma, because of the spell itself. Spell is more than enough to dictate which mode the character is in regardless of whether he announces it or not. There are special conditions, like change of appearance (and to a lesser extent magical presense) that indicates which mode the character is in.

She got punted away. Read Chapter 484, page 16. Don't waste my time.

Natsu was already into it, when he took off the bandages and revealed it. When he revealed the tattoo, it was clear that he was into it.

He didn't even go all out in his base mode. Let alone use DeS. You would've have a point IF we See Gray attacking Ul in base with something that isn't low key. like Gray using ice make attacks (high-medium end) against Ur. The fact that he didn't do this, proves my point. Gray in both of his modes, didn't muster a single spell outside of a lowkey one, and you have the nerve to say he wasn't holding back immensely? Ridiculous

I just provided the damn proof. I literally posted it twice for you to understand, and yet you again telling me where's the proof?
Here simple terms
-Base Mode Gray (Again holding back from using DeS)
-Lack of any high term or medium spells in Base
-The fact that Gray rather spend time talking to Lyon than fighting Ur is even more evident that Gray was holding back immensely.
-The fact Gray doesn't even charge in base is full proof of that. He is just in casual stationary position, convincing Lyon the whole time do snap out of it. Which he has been doing for the whole fight.
Does that look like someone who's holding back immensely? Damn right it does. Nothing you say can change that.

Your Natsu example doesn't apply because he was using his MP sized roar to
disintegrate him.

You originally stated that since it hasn't been stated it's an assumption, so Natsu was not holding back when he fought Bluenote.
Using a move is not a clear indication of whether Natsu is in the mode or not. Him yelling the name is. You have not provided any proof that Natsu has to be in the mode in order to use the move, whereas I have provided proof to the contrary. The three times that Natsu has used LFDM, when Natsu is fighting against Future Rogue, Max, and Tempesta, he clearly shouts LFDM and we see him wreathed in lightning and his aura changes. When Natsu was fighting Jemma, we see none of that. The only change we see is in the attack itself.

Chapter 484 page 16 is a panel of Eileen and her lackeys, so...

You keep claiming "oh it was obvious he was already in the mode" yet provide absolutely no evidence to back up your statement. The only thing you've said to support that is that Natsu needs to be in his mode in order to use his move, which I've already debunked and shown the clear difference between the two.

Yes it is, considering there is no other means to decipher whatever mode he is in. Yelling it out only comes for special purposes. You have not provided any damn proof, all you keep saying is he needs to announce the mode. Natsu was using LFD Mode against Gemma, stop trying to downplay Mashima's intentions. Wreathed in lightning and aura changing is when you exert more magical power meaning your taking it more seriously. There's a difference between duel mode, and a pure mode. Something that you're not comprehending. So LFD comparables don't even apply to FDKM ones, considering one is dual (fire/lighting), while other is purely fire, you know his current one.

Read the chapter, and you'll see she's covered in ice and punted away. She didn't magically disappear ._.

You have no evidence to prove that he was using Igneel's magical powers in base. Revealing his tattoo is more than enough proof that he's using FDKM mode considering what the tatoo signifies. Does Wendy announce DF When she uses it? No, so the same can apply to Natsu. You have debunked literally nothing from my posts, and shown no difference in it. You're using specific assumptions, and convenient ones at it. Gonna say, Gajeel tried more than Natsu against Bakl and co as well?

Exactly my point. Natsu becomes wreathed in lightning and his aura changes because he's taking it more seriously. When does Natsu go into a mode? When he takes a fight more seriously. What are these special circumstances that you speak of when Natsu yells his mode? Why on Earth would Mashima have Natsu yell out his mode if it didn't mean he was going into it? That would only confuse the reader and lead to arguments exactly like the one we are having right now.

The guy in the ice being carried away was the dog guy from Lamia Scale. It doesn't even look remotely like Ur.

I do have evidence that Natsu was using Igneel's powers in base because he wasn't in FDKM at the time. Please explain to me the difference between FDKM and LFDM. Who cares if one is dual element and one is pure? Why does it matter? They both give Natsu a power boost, they both are used in similar situations, and they both have their names yelled before Natsu goes into them. Why are you treating them as if different rules apply to each mode?

Yeah, and he doesn't need to damn well announce his mode. Natsu showed he was very serious against the WarGod hence, he was in that mode. Special conditions where the situation arises from it. Like against Hades, Future Rogue, etc. He can still be using the mode based on his spell. Why on Earth does it matter if Natsu yells this mode or not? We look at the actual perspective here, not what he yells. Yelling a mode means your just desperate. There's no need to confuse the reader when spell name is more than enough in Natsu's case.

What dog guy? What are you talking about. You probably not even reading the proper chapter.

That's not evidence, that's your thinly vieled point at assumption speaking. Revealing a dragon king emblem is more than enough proof he was using that mode, unless you now believe Natsu is this OP to even handle Igneel's MP at base Lol. It does matter when one element is varied from the dual element. They are both different type of elements, there's a difference between one element and two elements. Why doesn't Wendy not yell her mode at when she's in DF? Why doesn't Gajeel not yell his mode at when he's clearly in ISD.

First of all, you don't need to go all out to qualify as mid-difficulty. It's called MEDIUM difficulty for a reason. It's the range of difficulty used to justify the range where you can't simply walk all over your opponent, but you don't have to go all out with everything you got to take them out either. Tell me in your heart of hearts this isn't an accurate description of Gray+Lyon vs Ur. Secondly, if you want to say that a character is holding back, much less holding back immensely, then you need to have solid proof of that. In fact, the proof should meet the claim. This is an example of proof that a character is holding back immensely. There is evidence of both the fact they were holding back, and evidence of their justification.

For every assumption you used to justify why Gray was holding back immensely, there is another equally valid assumption for why he didn't .
1) Base Gray can't solo Ur. Hence why he needed Lyon's help.
2) Ice Devil's Zero Longsword is one of Gray's best spells. This, along with Lyon's help, was what it took to take down Ur.
3) It was completely necessary to have Lyon's help in this fight.
4) The fact that Gray's ice-geyser was overpowered means that his ice-make magic didn't cut it, and he needed to resort to devil slaying magic.

I'm not saying Natsu was holding back against Bluenote. I think he took Bluenote as seriously as he takes any other opponent. I think both Natsu and Gray took their opponents seriously, and didn't pull any punches. It just happens that Natsu defeated his opponent with less effort than Gray did. You're the one trying to say that Gray was holding back immensely against Ur.

Guys, he may be a little more aggresive than he should be, but @Tinitus makes quite a bit of sense. This is just my unbiased opinion of the situation. Take it or leave it. Good debate going on though. I don't think Natsu was in BDKM when he defeated the War God though... at this point in the story Natsu has far surpassed Grey and i will keep that opinion until Grey proves himself

The most important proof that FDK and FDKM are different is proved from their introduction.FDK Spells were introduced in chapter 434 and we again see it in chapter 463.But we see FDKM first in chapter 464 and too towards the end when Natsu activated it.Before that he used FDK Spells in his Base state. He used Igneel's power to fuel up his FDKM at that time. But in chapter 479 he used it with his own power. In FDKM we notice his immense aura i.e. numerous ray like particles coming from his body that can burn a Spriggan. But when he was in his Base state killing Ikusa and 927 Soldiers he didn't activate this mode and didn't have this aura.
And regarding Gray Ul CR Version mentions that Gray was holding back while MS don't.So that's why the problem.

1. Base Gray can defeat Ul on his own. He didn't need Lyon's help. He simply helped Lyon out. Big difference. The point of the battle was from development, Gray assisting Lyon to overcome the hurdle.
Base Gray didn't use any medium level spells, let alone high ones, didn't charge, was stationary position for the most part.
Once the conclusion came, that's where Base Gray used one of his high spells and it oneshotted Ur (along with Lyon's attack).

2. When Lyon overcame the mental struggle, that's when Gray started to take the battle seriously, and guess what? Ur was oneshotted. You're somehow thinking Ul overwhelming a guy who was more focused on his friend as if it means something.

Ice Devil's Sword is Base Gray's strongest spells, not his overall best spell. DeS Enhanced Devil sword>>>>>>>Ice Longsword used against UL

3. No it wasn't necessary. You just can't just accept that Base Gray is strong than enough to defeat Ul on his own.
Lyon was not necessary whatsoever. He did absolutely nothing in the battle until Gray convinced him to snap out of it.

Gray held back immenselly. Low diff fight in the end when they got serious. Before that, it was just Lyon trying to get over Ul, and Gray assisting him out with motivations and truth.

CR has always been more credible than MS, easy peasy. From panels, dialogues, and general point perspective.
Anyways, this cleared the argument fully. We now got mention that Gray held back.
Case closed.

Now I wouldn't be surprised if you try to point that claim the other way too.
Well gee I'm sorry you gave me the wrong chapter number -_-

How is yelling the name confusing? If anything, it makes things a lot easier for the reader to understand. Wouldn't it be a lot simpler if we knew that Natsu was entering a mode whenever he yelled it? If the names of the attacks were the only thing that indicates a certain mode, why would Mashima have him yell his mode in the first place? What you are saying is much more confusing than what I am, because you're saying there are special circumstances and different rules for each mode and whatnot whereas I just have a simple rule that applies to everything.

Dude are u serious? Gajeel DOES yell his mode when he goes ISD...

Why wouldn't Natsu be able to use Igneel's power at base form? We already know he spent 10 months learning how to unleash that power, so it's perfectly reasonable that Natsu doesn't have to go FDKM to use it.

Yea there's a difference between one element and two. So? Why does that matter at all? In both cases it's Natsu drawing out inner power to give himself a boost. The only difference is whether he's adding lightning, or if he's just adding more fire.

1. Prove this was the case
2. Gray took the battle seriously all along. When was it implied that he didn't?
3. Yes, demonizing is stronger. However, I'm not the one claiming Gray went all out, I'm saying he mid-diffed Ur. Ice Devil's Zero Longsword is still one of Gray's best spells.
4. I never said I didn't believe Gray couldn't take out Ur by himself. I said he couldn't solo Ur in base mode, which he didn't.[

True, but where was it said that Gray held back? "You've moved past everything, haven't you? The long road you've taken has taken you beyond Ur". This implies that Gray has surpassed Ur. This doesn't imply he was holding back, much less that he was holding back immensely.

There's a difference between using an spell and being in a mode. There are physical differences that we can see with visual cues: When Natsu uses FDK mode, he effects the landscape around him with his body heat:
Merely having a tattoo doesn't prove that he was always using FDK spells. That tattoo is always there under the bandage. Unwrapping that tattoo just means that he was using Igneel's magical power. Natsu only used 1 FDK spell against Zeref, and that was the last one he used in FDK mode. There's no reason to call out the mode if Natsu was already in it, and there's a noticeable difference in Natsu's power level before he called out the mode and after he called out the mode.

Sure. Natsu didn't hold back against Bluenote. Holding back would be like against Ajeel's troops, where the manga goes out of their way to say that they had to conserve power. There's a difference between holding back immensely and not going all out.

This still doesn't change the fact Natsu had less difficulty with Bluenote than Gray had with Ur. Natsu oneshotted Bluenote while holding Chelia up by the shirt. Gray defeated Ur with Lyon, after having been overpowered in a few exchanges. I'm willing to say that Gray did more damage, and didn't receive any major damage. However, the amount of resistance Ur gave her still makes this fall in the mid-difficulty range.

There is no more reason to assume that Fire Dragon King spells is Natsu going all out anymore than there is any reason to assume that going in DeS mode is Gray going all out. FDK mode is a mode just like LFD mode is a mode. Natsu has still yet to use multiple FDK spells in a fight, or use any secret arts in that mode.
--- Double Post Merged, ---

You can use FDK spells without entering FDK mode the same way you can enter LFD spells without entering LFD mode.
Natsu going into BDKM is him going all out, he went all out against Zeref and didn't use any secret arts and when he was going to give Zeref the final blow with all his power it was going to be a regular punch. We've already seen Natsu go all out unlike Gray.

That was with Igneel's power, and that level of power is far beyond anything we're talking about right here. Even in base mode, Igneel's power makes Natsu stronger than anything he can do in DFK mode with his own power. Igneel's power is, by definition, greater than anything Natsu has got going all out.

We haven't Natsu go all out using his own power. Natsu also used Fire Dragon King mode against Jacob. Obviously he wasn't anywhere near as exhausted as when he used Igneel's power. Look, we'll get to see Natsu go all out against August soon enough.

Igneel's power simply amplifies his own, if he had any more modes or moves he would have used him. Natsu was only exhausted against because he was being pushed a little when fighting Zeref and the Zeref pierced the book which pierced him.

Simply being in a mode doesn't mean you're going all out. Using exhaustive attacks means you are going all out. The FDK mode punch Natsu used against Zeref was exhaustive. The FDK attacks Natsu used against the War God, Alvarez troops, and Jacob were not exhaustive attacks. Natsu was exhausted because he used an exhausting attack against Zeref. Zeref didn't pierce the book until after, and Natsu was fine until after he used the spell.

This is just like how Dragon Force is a dragon slayer's strongest form. That doesn't mean if Acnologia shows up in his dragon form and whacks someone away with his tail that he's going all out. God Serena's DS magic is his strongest ability. He didn't even get to use half his elements when he activated it, much less go all out. Gray's demonized form 's his strongest form, no? That doesn't mean ice-make: silver was him going all out.

So you ignore the core of my argument. Bradman hurt Gajeel with non-physical magic, Bradman was affected by the head butt and used hax to injure Gajeel, address my point or don't reply. The fact you're side stepping my point probably shows you can't read properly. But let me guess you're going to ignore this again in your next reply.
You're making the claim that Gajeel is on par in physicals and you have yet to prove anything that suggests this.

  • Bradman hasn't gotten hurt by any of Gajeel's attacks [Already disproved your claim that states otherwise]
  • Gajeel is beat up before Bradman uses his Skulls (Magic)
  • Bradman doesn't even have a scratch on him
  • Gajeel needed help from Levy (fodder)
Case in point, nothing you have shown puts Gajeel on par with Bradman in anything.

Sure, you can believe what you want. It's your opinion to have your mindset. If facts from the manga can't change your fanbased mind, then all the more power to you. I didn't undermine your arguments, I straight up debunked and countered them word for word, considering your content had so many flawed inaccuracies, straw-men, red herrings and fallacies. Gray is on Base Natsu level in portrayal, not hard to understand. I bet Mashima himself would admit to that much. My arguments and claims stand true here as I'm going by what the manga is presenting to us.

and if you want to be fair with yourself, then put Erza above a tier over Mira. Otherwise the double standard statement easily stands.
As many people claim here, you make your own assumptions and you believe them to be true and strong arguments, while you believe mine to be flawed, inaccurate, and even hypocritical. Well, that's your problem, not mine.

Saying we've plenty of proof that BASE Gray has surpassed Ur (as in, the Gray that cannot eat her ice, or cannot slay a demon) is just "flawed, innaccurate, straw-men, a red herring and a fallacy". Ur is a tier (if not more) above base Gray.

I'm not the one overhyping Natsu here, you are the one overhyping Gray. That they've always been classed as equals on portrayal doesn't mean it'll be that way here in Alvarez. Natsu's made MASSIVE improvements in that year gap, whereas Gray has done reasonably good improvements as far as we could see. If we do not take into account their small false brawl, which is not a feat nor a portrayal of anything at all, Natsu's base flames have improved in terms of power and control to the extent they outclass anything Gray's shown to this point.

Saying Natsu could one-shot BN is not overhyping Natsu (he actually did that!), saying Gray could oneshot BN is overhyping Gray. I mean, you're clearly a Gray fan and it is only natural that you have a tendency to hype him and defend him over other characters. I'm no fan of either so my opinion is rather impartial and based on what I've seen on their development.

(...) Now you're going to tell me something convenient to help support your flawed statements. I can't believe you also haven't clued in on the Ul fight whatsoever. This is like the third ignorant user who hasn't clued in yet. As for Ur kicking their "asses", (...)
Clearly, making such statements makes us less ignorant (if we were ignorant to begin with) and makes you look like you don't know what to say to defend your arguments. What cannot be defended, cannot be defended. You're making yourself look ignorant, a few users have noticed that already. Please stop doing this.

Just one point I'd like to clarify is that I'm not a Natsu fanboy. In fact I don't really like Natsu that much. Actually. I would probably choose Gray over Natsu. But it seems we have a difference of opinion and that doesn't mean either of us is more ignorant than the other. We see differencies in the facts, we interpret them differently and we come out with different conclusions. There's no need to call anyone an ignorant or worse.

He makes sense because his interpretation of the events makes sense. But he could make much more sense if he sticked to the argument and stopped spamming "natsu tards", "ignorants" and things like that :) Then I'd gladly have read all his following arguments but I had to stop due to the disrespect.

I can see des gray being on natsu base level but base gray would get wrecked by base natsu no doubt about that..unless gray show some crazy feats..he's simply outclassed by natsu atm

That's because of FDK Spells.Till Tartaros Arc Natsu and Gray in Base were potrayed to be equals. But this Arc Natsu has FDK Spells in Base State and his Roar against Bluenote is still unmatched by Gray. The reason may be Gray after 6 months of training joined Avatad and probably didn't have time to train much after that while Natsu had time to train for 1 Year.

Yup exactly base gray isn't even close to be on base natsu's levei..especially with fdk spells..saying otherwise is just dumb
Base natsu>>>base gray
Base natsu= des gray
Fdkm natsu>Des gray
