I removed Acnologia this time around purely because I want to see his backstory and character develop more so I can place him well. I do like his character a lot/ have a lot of hype for when he returns but I want more added and flesh out his character a bit.

I'm serious though, you can't tell me he hasn't glo'd up in the least bit. Gray's character has progressed regarding his stance with Juvia but in a way regressed by Invel manipulating him and feeding him all that darkness talk. Juvia's is the same to me, she always was a dedicated character towards Gray. So idk if it's fair to say she regressed, she's more plateauing.

Aww I was going to do that, took the words out of my mouth But thank you, and yes, Natsu has in fact, developed. Not just here though, his development has been shown in GMG, when he admitted Future Rogue was stronger than him and he was going to lose if they kept continue the fight. He did not do that before, like in Fantasia arc, Natsu said he lost to Laxus was because he was still a kid, not brave enough to admit he was weaker.

Just gonna say this though, his character developed slowly doesn't mean it's not there, you just have to be a fan to really see it

His overall personality change is slight, but getting stronger for him to protect his friends is a part of him maturing/becoming a man (not saying power improvement = character development, just saying it applies here... similar for Laxus).

Overall though, Natsu's development has been quite flat.

Gray's character has generally developed really well through the series. He hit a wall at the GMG, and but with Silver, there were good moments in Tartarus. This arc he was good with Lyon vs Ul, and with Juvia, but his magic trolling him is terrible for his character. But I think his more epic moments are to come, where he overrides that insanity through willpower.

I'm going to receive an avalanche of hate responses, but i dislike Gray's development quite a lot.
He used to be one of my favourite characters (that doesn't mean a lot, i like a LOT of characters tbh), now i'm not so sure about that.
The way his main goal in life is to kill END. There's no reason for that, pointless, hence i feel like this development is extremely forced.
Attacking his best friend with the intent of killing him, for no reason aside from "urgh i have to kill END i live for this very reason". God no. I disliked that so much.
The only development i like from him is towards Juvia. That was about time. His personality, motives, etc everything concerning END, is mediocre and made Gray fell in my favourite characters list.

Character development ain't a scale to love or hate a character, However i agree that Natsu don't have much development as others but that because of the editors refuse to give the MC the development. For example, Oda wanted to give Luffy an adult behavior and real development after Ace's death but the editors didn't allow him to do that.

It has been small, but noticeable, honestly.

Yeah, but there's no anger there anymore, just calmness, if not sadness. I'm not sure how crazy he goes for hunting demons, but with END it was after he lost Juvia, on top of losing almost everyone else he cared about. But I think if the magic does cause him to go insane, he'll somehow beat that insanity and become Gray again.

You shouldn't be delivered with hate messages, that would be pathetic on the receiver to do so.

Okay let's get this straight, it was not pointless for Gray to attempt to kill END before he knew about Natsu. His perishing father delivered a message, and as a good son, Gray wanted to fullfill it.

one thing that tends to get overlooked is that Gray is in his corrupted stated is thinking that Natsu lied to him all of this years. He thinks Natsu is aware of being a demon from long time ago etc.When you are corrupted or literally not sane, you tend to believe or think or do things that you normally would not do. That's the case with Gray here.

Gray didn't receive any development after Ul (and hints of Invel) You are confusing development with progression of plot for a character to renact.

. What Gray did against END wasn't development or regression, but in fact staying in the same spot. Meaning Gray wasn't the same Gray against END. Basically he wasn't himself. So I'm not sure why we have to ignite as if it's regular Gray that was attempting to fight END. because that wasn't really Gray at all. I chalk it to an alternative messed up Gray.

It was a simply a corrupted guy who was corrupted with demon slaying magic. So really not fair to pin point that all on Gray Put anyone in Gray's shoes, and they would act the same way he did. Invel practically manipulated Gray around mainly because of his corruption to his magic wearing thin on him, and the fact that Gray just lost another love of his life made him to and things that were out of character.

Basically TLDR, it's unfair to categorize Gray for development in the context against END, because it wasn't him at all that was attacking his friend. It was the magic, corruption and trauma that was making him stay.


Compare Gray's mentality against Ul, and Gray against END, and tell me which one is the gray. Hint: It's the former.
The Gray I know and accustomed from years, would question Natsu on everything he knows.
The Gray I know and accustomed from years, would attempt to protect Natsu from going berserk, or atleast try to demonize the demon in Natsu.

Basically Mashima is making a point, that when you are corrupted with magic, and have shown to be in so much trauma after years of losing so many people in your life that too at young age, you basically become an alternatively different person. Gotta learn from that.
If you watch Supernatural (witnessing Dean and Sam's life), you would perfectly understand Gray even more.


Regardless, people change their minds on characters all the time. So I'm sure he'll be in your tops when he works over overcoming his demon slaying magic corruption and now that he knows Juvia is alive, he'll be acting sane again. Happy smiling and calm Gray is the best Gray btw

You can't call it regression if the character himself is mentally unstable tbh.
It's also because of the situation itself and agreed that Invel played a major part of his methods but in the end Gray will eventually overcome it like he generally does and gain more development/depth/maturity, etc.

1. Jellal. Character wise, he is my #1 hence my username, I just totally hate how he is copped out for stupid reasons and credibility being shitin battles.
2. Gray. He is tied with Jellal even though I saw Jellal first in my sister's phone. Gray easily fits my wants of a true shounen protagonist, battles with least or no bs, not cliche character even though fitting an archetype clichce etc. If I were a writer, I would base my MC off of him. Not to mention stripping habit which I happen to have irl too. Main reason why I got hooked in FT.
3. Zeref. I just tend to love edgy characters that are done right, his backstory made me cry. Though FMAB rip off.
4. Ichiya. The true definitioon of a Gentlemeeeeen
5. Laxus. His progression as a character is on par with Gray's but since he lacks screentime compare to Jelly and Gray he got my 5th spot. CHILL Laxus fanboys, this is not a power ranking thread, I didn't mean Jellal>Laxus.
6. Acnologia. Villain wise, he is my #2, I just love him wrecking stuff up but character wise, he still fails at it and couldn't lit a candle to Zeref who is my #1 for a villain.

Agree with most others too though. Gray, Laxus, Ultear, Ichiya, Mard Geer are all lit. Like Jellal too although not as much as the rest.
