FMA Manga vs. Novel?

Hi, I was wondering if anybody has read FMA novels in Japanese. I want to find out if the novel worlds are parallel to and entirely different from manga FMA, or if the story ties into the manga. Or is it more connected to anime? Also, how did you get them in the US? Also, does each novel relate to each other or they are totally stand-alone type of stories? Are they good? Thanks!
