They seem to be the top-tier Android phones at the moment. I didn't really have to choose, because my carrier only has the S4. They both seem like great phones, and I think the people putting the HTC One over the S4 are doing it because of the aesthetic. Using plastic like in the S4 must be a major faux pas these days :oh
What does HTC One use? Both of them look the same for me, hardware-wise, without touching it.

I think HTC One uses more metal than the S4 and has a curved back.

So, I'm still unsure.. which one should I buy, HTC One or Galaxy S4? I'm a complete newbie when it comes to Android, and I'm thinking about changing my phone for sure this time after mine is broken right now. I read one review at Gizmodo, and it says that HTC One is better, but to be honest I'm kinda doubting HTC phones' quality in general.
Play with the phones. In the end, you're the one who has to use it; I think it's better if you asked questions to people and touched phones. It's like, two awesome cars. You can ask all you want, but no matter how good Car A is, if there's something that doesn't make you feel comfortable like the seats or amount of cylinders, you're not gonna have a good time compared to Car B, which may not be as good but fits you perfectly.

I got S3 because it was the latest top of the line model that wasn't an iPhone, and it was fast and all, which is what I needed so I could multitask like check emails while taking a photo of stuff and all.

In my opinion...

HTC One has over S4:

- better industrial design. You really need to hold one in person to appreciate the build quality and design.
- better camera
- better speakers

S4 has over One:

- user replaceable battery
- expandable memory via microSD
- better dimensions and larger screen

I suggest you try both out in person to get a feel. In a perfect world, I would just tell you throw your money at the HTC One Google Play Edition, but from the reviews I've read, they messed up the camera UI and some camera features (understandable from being stock Android). It just felt like a dream come true; iPhone-quality design and hardware married with pure unmolested stock Android. Too good to be true I guess, otherwise there'd be no point to the Nexus devices, but I'm just ranting now...

But try both of them out in person at a local shop if you can, even more so that you're new to Android. Touchwiz and Sense (OEM skins on top of Android) are two opposite things. Touchwiz is more.....refining? There's a lot of stuff you can fiddle with and tinker, configure to your liking. Sense is more here's-how-what-we-think-you-are-most-comfortable-with. For those who don't want to mess around with a lot of settings. In a sense, HTC does get it right, but sometimes I do yearn for some of the settings in Touchwiz, but on the flipside, I can't stand some UI elements of Touchwiz and much prefer the more stock Android-like elements in Sense. (an example would be their icons vs Holo/Sense 5.0/iOS7/WP8, it's a subjective one but a very valid one)

Try them out to see which UI you're more comfortable with.

From a performance and hardware standpoint, they're both just as good. Snapdragon 600 is a beast (even against the better Exynos 5 Octa flavoured S4), enough said. So don't need to mull over whether you're getting something slower or faster. Worry more on the price point and what you like the feel of and certain features.

But I think the battery makers can make do with the space they've been given. Like, look at how ZeroLemon designed their battery... sure it adds more weight and bulk, but it also provides a superior battery life to other batteries because they're using up the space that extended batteries leave empty. Not sure if this makes sense, but google it.
Would rather charge my phone each night than carry a brick in my pocket all day...

As far as I understand the issue with battery life is not one of technology itself but rather the materials. A given material can hold only so much energy and technology can't change that. Until materials capable of holding more energy aren't available we are not going to see improvements in batteries themselves. Thats why focus is given to efficient hardware rather than better batteries overall and why the new intel processors are a big deal. As far as I understand (although my information might be a tad outdated) there are no new materials imminently available for batteries.
Valid point. But it's not as cut and dry. I ranted and singled out battery, but ultimately it's a combo of battery, hardware, and OS. iPhones usually have very good battery life because Apple controls both software and hardware. It's the same in the x86 world, you get more juice under Mac OSX versus Windows, though that's been squashed with the advent of W8. So OS does play a part. As well as like you mentioned, hardware, such as displays (it just keeps getting bigger), and SoCs but sometimes those are in the hands of process nodes and architectural advancements.

I would personally prefer to have a brick that lasts me through the day rather than require me to recharge more than once or even thrice a day.

You have to recharge more than once a day? You probably abused the hell out of your battery.

I meant recharge for a while because you likely wouldn't have time to go to 100% from 5, 10, 50, or even 60%.

I don't know, I just know that it doesn't take but a few hours to full charge.

Check it. But how long does it last on full charge?

Mine can go for about two to three days.

It depends on how much it's used. There's no way to properly test that unless you were either playing HD video until the battery died, or using it minimally. I don't have to charge it every day

Didn't want to go back a page just for you to have made a typo and not realize it. :verily

So the battery life is better on S4. Hmm.

My S3 Mini takes around 2 hours to be charged full from <10% battery in off condition. How long it lasts of course totally depends on how much I used it... But if I just use it for texting without playing music too much, it can stay for 3-4 days until it reaches <10% battery. I try my best not to let the battery drop <30% so I recharge it once every three days usually.

Stop using your phone to power your Toyota Prius.

To be honest, if someone needs that power brick, they either used their phone so much and ruined the original battery by not draining it correctly, or they're just on it way too much period.

Either way they're zombified by their phone.

Stop using your phone to power your Toyota Prius.
It's convenient and easy. :hmph

But seriously, what's wrong with having such battery? Y'all acting as if I did something wrong when all I did was make sure my phone can last two or three days without charge despite me using navigation, playing Candy Crush, and stalking hot women on Instagram.

Nobody's bagging your brick. I just think it's ridiculous your phone can't last 1-2 days like others (on average). I can't take anyone seriously who says their phone dies within half a day.
