I think his reasoning makes sense. It's true that there was at least one chapter every year.

It's a meaningless correlation though...

I'll explain my thoughts: quite simply, the assumption made rests on the fact that Togashi is capable of producing and releasing a new chapter, but simply chooses not to do so. In actuality it's that his sickness that either allows him, or not, to produce chapters. Besides, even if you can expect at least one chapter a year, why would you think it would happen the ninth of December? Isn't that oddly specific?

I remember there was an awesome fan made arc with altered text based on HXH featuring Meryem as The King of HXH Fans versus Netero as Togashi, where The King of HXH Fan must overcome Togashi's 100 excuses for hiatus. He ended up ripping off Togashi's leg and non drawing arm thinking that'd get him to back to drawing HXH but of course we know that totally didn't work. I'm suspecting it's going to take something at least this drastic to work!

I can't find it anymore and it's in Chinese anyway, but there are some pretty obvious parallels, like after Togashi loses an arm he goes, "Do you think just because I'm missing an arm I can't come up with an excuse for hiatus?" After The King of HXH got blown up, instead of Youpi and Pufu it had Oda and Kishimoto trying to rescue him, and found that the only way to keep him alive is the ending chapter of HXH but he's obviously not going to last that long with the injuries, so Kishimoto figured out all he has to do is read Naruto to sustain The King until HXH finishes. It also shows how fans totally underestimated Togashi by assuming HXH should've roughly concluded before Naruto ended.

Well, as a plus side, i am sure togashi had plenty of time to think the DC arc/arcs through.
Actually, i am sure that togashi does work on HxH when he takes a hiatus, at least partially, he just doesn't draw.

Rereading HxH atm, a lot of hints fall even in the hunter exam arc about the existence of the dark continent.
I am convinced that Togashi thought of the DC when he started HxH and already had it as motivation for ging in mind.

In hiatusses he has time to plan far ahead and not go arc by arc.

A comeback would really be nice tho.
A pace of 20 chapters a year would be great, maybe 10 early in the year and 10 late in the year.
That way he won't strain his body too much and there is a steady output.

For the most part, togashi let his arcs start slowly with lots of explanations about the backround of the setting.

He did this again, but in those 9 chapters, we already got some very promising plotlines going. Given, it is easier to do because we know a lot of the players of this arc already.

Exactly! Man, the duality between Ging and Pariston and the way how Ging manipulates the background just to interfere in Pariston's plan. These two are spectacular characters. Aside the return of Kurapika just to finally retrieve all eyes of his tribe and how it'll occur some real difficulty when we have all the princes fighting each other for the throne (with the creepy beast of each one).
We also have the question about the traitor and the problem called Beyond Netero. And we have Don Freecss! One of the most special people alive (and probably the person that knows almost everything about the Dark Continent).

Come on, Gon. You have to return soon! You have to discover how to "re-start" your Nen. We have to see you and Killua growing.

Tbh, watching that hiatus chart I cant't consider the series to be with status "on-going" since 2006. Releases were more abnormalities than trends since then.

It's not all that horrible tho if you take into account that HxH chapters are usually rather packed.
There are many shonen's in which nothing much happens in one chapter, exspecially in transition chapters.
People talk a bit, maybe a joke and then peple go to another place or a fight is set up.
Judging from the 9 chapters we got last time we get a lot of information per chapter

So, at least we get some progress when there actually are chapters.

It is much worse with berserk. There is one chapter every few months or years. A good chapter, but nonetheless.
We got a tankubon 2011, then one 2013 and the next one will definitely not be out before 2016, and the tankubon consists out of 9 chapters.

With HxH, i do not have to doubt that Togashi will finish it that much. He works, in his strange way, consistently and the chapters come in blocks, so at leaser there is something to read without forgetting what actually happened between one chapter and the last.
