People above me had already commented on character portrayal and designs so I won't touch upon it anymore. What I'm curious about is your counter claim that the 2011 version is not faithful to the manga. How 'bout listing them here so we can shoot it down and embarrass you? Of course, I'm not saying that the 2011 series haven't done hinky stuff but the '99 anime fans tend to rage on subjects that wouldn't affect the manga canon and selectively forget/dismiss the "illogical and inconsistencies" the '99 series did in return.
Anyone with a working eye and a working brain can discern a big difference in the portrayal of the characters. From the character design (disproportionate eyes, fat baby cheeks, head to body ratio) to the damn way Gon makes strange "MMMM!!" sounds in response to Killua's lead; from the soundtrack accompanying Gon's special moments... oh why do I bother.
I never said anything about the '99 series. You must be feeling defensive.
Also, why're you being defensive for another person's sake when several people already commented on how dubious his newsflash is? You can't blame my concern since he happened to register on the site 5 days after you, from the same country w/c interestingly write the same way as you do.
I'm being defensive for some other guy when there is absolutely - absolutely - nothing in his post to suggest he is a hater/fanboy? Open your eyes and moreover, look in the mirror.
Quit being a wet blanket would you?
Gon and Killua are not going to get any older unless Togashi makes a time skip or something. But that won't be for a while.
If you can't get used to the fact that they look young in the Madhouse version then just STOP WATCHING IT. It's not that hard.
I on the other hand and others here on this forum actually ENJOY watching the reboot and while criticism is fine you're not
criticizing you're just bitching. Nobody wants to hear your bitching. Nobody is forcing you to watch the series.
Well yes, but on the other hand...nope. I think i'll continue criticizing the series when it warrants it, thank you very much. Now scram.
I mean seriously does it REALLY matter that they look young? They're 12 for goodness sake!
Could they look a little older? Yeah, sure. But Madhouse decided to go with a young 12 and
you're either just gonna have to deal with it like we all do or just stop watching. Or at the very least stop bitching.
It's not just their looks; its' the way they're portrayed. Also sets the tone for the series.
I do not understand the complaints that Gon and Killua act and look their age. What exactly is wrong with that? That is how they are in the manga. It's certainly okay to not like it, but in all honesty the reason they are acting and looking this way is because that is the way Togashi intended them to. They are 12 years old, if you want anime or manga with more mature protagonists watch something with adult protagonist, don't complain about kid protagonists being kids. It's nonsense..
They don't look like that in the manga AT ALL. Actually to me, quite frankly, it doesn't matter what they look like in the manga. It's about spirit, not form.
I don't see what the problem with me telling him to drop a series that he's already decided to hate.
Anywho it's pretty clear that he has decided
to just hate on the series and while that's fine he doesn't need to ruin it for everyone else.
But whatever. I'm just "bitching about bitching". So I'm done.
Urging the series to take a more mature approach which, incidentally, is sort of faithful to the manga, is a valid criticism. Concluding that I've "decided to hate the series" based on just that once sentence which was in fact framed rather tamely? Doesn't take much to see what's goin' on behind dat head.
It's just so absurd that someone whined about the 12 years old boys behaving their age.
Episode 27 follows very closely to the manga, especially the light hearted and the boy-adventure tone.
That's how togashi breeze through the beginning part of the heavens arena arc (as well as the greed island), there's humor, boys being boys, adventures, danger, challenges....because...duh! we have two young boys here out for adventures, what did that person expects?
What on earth was this user complaining about? Where on earth did he misunderstood this arc as some serious drama?
What does he have agsinst the author and the manga and how it was written? What was he imagining HxH to be?
It's been a recurring theme throughout the whole series. I wasn't basing my assessment on JUST THIS ONE episode. I just thought that maybe since we're on to Heaven's Arena things might change. In fact I believe the director of the anime claimed that things get rather more serious once past the Zoldyck arc. Is it realistic to expect a gradual change in character design and portray?
I suspect some diehard fan of the 1999 series were so STUCK on the portrayal of the Yorknew arc, where the 1999 anime staff took massive artistic license to change HxH into some Hollywood noir thriller (which I didn't like at all) and Kurapika-centric. Is that why some 1999 anime-only HxH fans could only see HxH as some oh-so-dark serious gritty crime thriller? The 1999 anime was often really OFF in portraying HxH and its characters so I wouldn't surprise some 1999 series fans thought what they saw was canon, and actually disliked the actual light hearted and cult-humor from the manga. The new 2011 adaptation is closer to Togashi's intent than the old 199 series. I HATE the innocent (hence really annoying) Gon in the 1999 series, and forced moralistic stands the 1999 anime staff imposed on the series was really bothering me.
If the Gon in 1999 series is innocent, then this one is mentally retarded. The York New portrayal of the 1999 series was indeed a different way of going about it. Some people liked it for that, some people disliked it. But the thing is, I still don't know why people are bringing up the 1999 series.
Telling the new anime production to quit is just so obnoxious. The world doesn't revolves around you fragile little ego.
Fanboys harp on and on about how faithful this adaptation is when in fact, so far, the only similarity is in form and not substance. Sure, I could stop watching. But some things are so intolerable that the knowledge of its existence is enough to irritate and compel people to make a stand. Okay, i'm exaggerating, but you know what I mean.
This is the problem I have with 1999 series -- I don't care for a Christopher Nolan version of HxH (and I don't like the Dark Knight film) because the 1999 Yorknew adaptation took itself WAY too seriously! They took what's essentially a Quentin Tarantino-sque type of work (wacky auteur post-modern shounen that has something 'off' about it) and tried to make it feel "adult" and serious and traditional Hollywood thriller. It's mainstream-izing and stamping out all the cult flavors and twisted humors from Togashi's work. Most of the characters came off way too silly looking in that solemn atmosphere. We're talking about over the top characters like One-Kill-a-day Grandpa, Steven Tyler Silver haired Daddy, simple lined-Gon, shoujo manga big eyes characters like Kurapika, Machi, Killua, etc. They looked so odd and disconnected with that tried-too-hard-to-be-serious-and-realistic mafia world. The director for 1999 series, Kazuhiro Furuhashi, did the same thing for his take on Kenshin OVA...it turned Kenshin into something completely unrecognizable. But i notice that some anime fans tend to think being dark = adult = good (as if that get them mainstream's approval).
I believe the manga took itself seriously, actually. It wasn't a self parody. The tone was indeed different from the 1999 series. Whichever you prefer is up to you. Don't, however, accuse the manga of something that it is not. It is not in the vein of Quentin Tarantino. It really isn't.
