The thing is that the a lot of people tend to dislike any change to the story presented in the manga. Now I like sticking to canon as much as the next guy, but sometimes a story can be improved by deviating from the manga and changing a few things. Look at films based on books for example. Sometimes a film will be better than the book it's based on because it actually changed a few things (Fight Club imo). And look at Yu Yu Hakusho. It also changed the story a bit and in a lot of people's opinions was actually better than the manga. In the first anime's case there were somethings that I now realize were stupid changes (Mito being related to Gon's mother; characters having different characterization; corny lines; re-arranging of events...), yet there were also things that I think made the story a little better, at least the Hunter Exam arc (am I the only one who liked Kurapika vs Hisoka in the old anime, well except for the generic lines and how cool they were trying to make Kurapika look). I really want to see the Chimera Ant arc but at the same time I kind of liked the pacing of the first arc in the 1999 anime. In my opinion it made the arc feel a little less rushed. Of course it's unreasonable to think that the new anime would follow the old one, the new anime is based on the manga and not the old anime. Anyway my point is that sometimes it's okay to change things, unless of course those changes end up creating plot holes :D.

It's not that I don't think the manga can be improved. It's that there's a fine line
between making changes to the story and changing the story. The 1999 series
seems to be teeter tottering on the edge of that line.

I agree with this statement. Moreover, it's an issue that sometimes the 1999 series crosses over that line. Episode 31 is a fine example of this: compare it to the corresponding chapters of the manga. I don't know who decided it would be a good idea for Gon to fight Illumi, but...

However, I also want to say that it's completely acceptable for one to be of the opinion that the 1999 series is "better" than the manga or 2011 series. Personal preference isn't something that can be argued, since so much of it is based upon individual factors. But statements like "the Nippon Animation's version is more faithful to the manga than the Madhouse version" are generally false. I say "generally" because there are some incidents where this statement is true.

Yes i know, there's many examples of the story changing just to add "improvements", but what I'm saying is that if the 1999 series had happen to continue as an on going series, it would have met it's demise later on. I know that Togashi was going on haitus during these times as well but in the end it could have affected the story in a different manner. :^_^

This also works vice versa. The Madhouse adaption isn't that faithful to the manga as claimed. Both adaptions have their flaws due to various...well let's say reasons. I just noticed that this weeks episode lacked a crucial information regarding Satotsu and most importantly Ging. They skipped it for whatever "reason".

O actually you might be right but they still might have the conversation in the next episode. The preview shows Satots talking to Gon still so we just have to wait and see.

Hence, "generally."

I mention the 2011 series skipping that in my comparison, though I don't state it outright the specific scene because it looks like Madhouse might be moving that conversation to episode 21.

as for "and gon was angry" At first I thought it was a bit unnecessary but now
I think it is the groundwork for a great hunter x hunter meme. Observe :mono

WARNING MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT READ ALL OF THE CHIMERA
ANT ARC IN THE MANGA.

[/IMG]

the meme is simple

just write

"Gon was angry"

and then cite an example of how Person X hurts one of Gon's friends.
The more dramatic you can make this part. The better.

and then remind the reader

"and Gon was angry."

then place an appropriate picture.

Generally i'd say its better to stick to the canon. There was an opinion a few post ago about changing the story and making changes in the story. I'd say that there is little point in making changes in the story. The original story is the real one for me, with all its cons and pros. I'd miss its cons just as much as its pros...so making changes in story doesn't sit well with me generally. However if someone is talking about changing the story, contrary to the popular opinion here, i'd be more interested and accepting of it. For example, alan moore's batman, tim burton's batman and christopher nolan's batman are all different original stories. If one does not have that amount of creativity or courage, he better leave the adaptations as close to the original source as possible and not tinker with it using the excuse of 'improvement'.

I'm pretty much a lurker here, but do go through this thread. I honestly have never seen much of the 2011 anime outside of the first ep, so I can't comment on it or give a fair or objective view on it, but I will go on to say that I do agree that sometimes change can be good or interesting, if done right. It is an adaptation after all so there will probably be some changes, be it slight or major, but in the case of the 1999 series of HxH, I'd say it's more so in the minor category (and yes, I do read the manga). The characterizations didn't seem out of place and all that, but I can only say this for the 1999 series. I actually liked that filler arc with Anita for reasons already mentioned. I liked it because of the development for Killua. Only thing I can think of right off that I did dislike (as far as characterization went) was the whole Leorio x Kurapika vibe that's nonexistent in the manga.

To me, a "major" change would be like the characters of Mamoru, Chibi Usa, and Rei from Sailor Moon (and I only thought of this because of Togashi being married to the manga-ka of the SM series). Mamoru's role was downplayed, Chibi Usa's character came across as being more bratty (imo), and Rei was more boy crazy. In the manga, Mamoru (Tuxedo Kamen) played more of a role, Chibi Usa had more respect for Usagi (and didn't crush on Mamoru which is still creepy), and Rei was more serious about her work as a priestess. For Rei/Mars' character, I heard that they changed it for the anime because her character wouldn't have been as interesting if they would've stuck with her manga characterization. Personally, I feel that she would've been fine if left alone, but meh. There were other changes in SM that I'd consider "bad" too, like the Asteroid Sensei storyline (which became nonexistent) and the butchering of Sailor Moon SuperS (they came up with their own storyline to drop the outer soldiers for that arc) and Sailor Stars. They changed Minako's background and had that storyline of her being in England for the anime (which is ironic, since the girl is terrible at English as a school subject [and everything else, minus gym] in the manga). They dropped quite a bit of background info on some of the characters too or never explained some things, such as why Makoto lives by herself, where Rei's parents are, where Ami's parents are, etc.

Sorry for rambling. Just saying that I don't think the 1999 version is that bad, but giving it some thought, I might go back and check out the 2011 series, even though I'm still surprised that the stuff with Kaito was dropped from the first ep.

Allow me to clarify something.

I do NOT hate the 1999 series.

I simply think that in general it is less faithful to the manga.

This isn't a good or bad thing but just how it is. I still enjoy the 1999 series but almost as it's own series.

For me, the manga and the 1999 series are two different but very similar stories. And actually I would even say the 2011 series differs from
the manga. However so far it's the most accurate one out there. But I enjoy all three series.

Don't worry i was once a lurker myself lol. Welcome to the forum, but yeah, when it comes to changes when certain series are getting adapted i think what the 1999 series did was quite good. It's personally one of my favorite series, especially the first 2 openings which i really liked. When i got to reading the manga the vibe i was getting off it felt a little different than what i was getting from the 1999. It's probably because it was a bit more face paced and i was expecting some of the fillers to be in there. In the end i appreciate the manga more than i do the 1999, but it's just my personal preference.

The whole Kurapika x Leorio vibe to a certain extent was suppose to be nonexistent until the middle of the first phase. Before that whole time Kurapika was only interested in Gon, Than later Gon was serving as a medium between the two. When Kurapika and Leorio first met they were already gonna a fight each other, so in a way they already had a bond forming. They went through tests before the first phase ,when Leorio was told to watch over the wounded man he stuck to his word which made Kurapika have more respect for him. So during the first phase, it is in Kurapika's nature to think quite a lot so he wanted to know the real reason behind Leorios goal. Than and there they started knowing each other at an intimate level, which made them official friends i can say. None the less traveling in a group throughout most of the hunter exam creates bonds. Of course there are plenty of more examples. Paraphrasing isn't in my department. lol I know you read the manga, i just wanted to point out that their vibe was far from nonexistent. Togashi builds the characters with subtleties and i personally think he's pretty good at doing that.. lol

Yeah you should watch 2011 series, It's fun to watch. =]

I have a question. Can anyone translate the kanji on the main page of the HxH anime site where it says 3/11? I would assume it's talking about a new opening or ending theme since it is around that time but since I haven't seen any articles on it I'm not sure.

They probably will make a new op and ending since they're moving from this arc. I wonder if that will be first the ending (WHICH IS AWESOME ALREADY AND WILL BE HARD TO TOP) and then Opening once they enter to the York arc.

exactly :super

i know and acknowledge that the 1999 series made many changes until episode 12. i myself dislike the anita filler and i'm on the fence regarding the whole gas filler in the marathon exam.

but when trick tower began the 1999 series was generally faithful to the manga. yes there are changes here and there, but as ssjup said, they are minor. so i really blew my fuse when some people began blowing the changes out-of-proportion. :p

anyway personally, i take the 2011, 1999 and manga series as three separate stories and i don't hold the manga as sacred (though i give it some special treatment since it's the canon). i just happen to like 1999's take on the story most.

Nobody knows. I read somewhere has been signed for 42 eps. Further contracts depend on how well it does, I asume.
