I really love your analysis of this series Popo. You really pay attention to the little details which I tend to overlook in the series so it's great to hear your thoughts :super

Btw as a viewer of all three sources of hxh I was so amazed to see how much things were different in the 1999 series. Just as an example I remember when I saw the Gon vs Illumi fight in the older series it made me think Illumi was so goddamn weak!! I couldn't understand how someone weak like him hung around with someone like Hisoka and I didn't consider him a threat. Then I found out it was filler :-_-. I really did love the old series and I'm glad I watched it because it led me to the manga which in turn led me to this remake, but geez I'm so glad it was remade XD

Another consensus I read is that Japanese fans agree that the 1999 series is Kurapika centric (the Nippon Animation was probably drawn more to his stories, added a lot of stuff for him and favored too much of him) while the Madhouse seems to be Killua centric.
This is very much accurate. The 99 series put a great deal of emphasis on Kurapika's struggle and more or less side-lined Gon, Killua and Leorio's personal journeys to a significant extent. I'm not saying they weren't there, but Kurapika's journey overshadowed all others. I also felt as though Nippon Animation seemed bored with Gon and Killua centric arcs like Heaven's Arena and Greed Island, which were easily the worst done arcs in the 99 series.

I also agree that 2011 focuses much more on the Gon and Killua relationship, which in the long run is the main focus of the entire manga up to this point. They are the two central characters, Kurapika and Leorio are sidelined for a long time. I think Madhouse has the right idea in emphasising Gon and Killua and putting Kurapika and Leorio in more of a secondary role like in the manga. I guess I consider it to be similar to how in Yu Yu Hakusho the two main characters are Yusuke and Kuwabara and then you have the other two main characters Hiei and Kurama. I hope that makes sense lol.

Better yet the studio should drop the series.

Quit being a wet blanket would you?
Gon and Killua are not going to get any older unless Togashi makes a time skip or something. But that won't be for a while.
If you can't get used to the fact that they look young in the Madhouse version then just STOP WATCHING IT. It's not that hard.
I on the other hand and others here on this forum actually ENJOY watching the reboot and while criticism is fine you're not
criticizing you're just bitching. Nobody wants to hear your bitching. Nobody is forcing you to watch the series.

I mean seriously does it REALLY matter that they look young? They're 12 for goodness sake!
Could they look a little older? Yeah, sure. But Madhouse decided to go with a young 12 and
you're either just gonna have to deal with it like we all do or just stop watching. Or at the very least stop bitching.

I do not understand the complaints that Gon and Killua act and look their age. What exactly is wrong with that? That is how they are in the manga. It's certainly okay to not like it, but in all honesty the reason they are acting and looking this way is because that is the way Togashi intended them to. They are 12 years old, if you want anime or manga with more mature protagonists watch something with adult protagonist, don't complain about kid protagonists being kids. It's nonsense..

How i see Gon and Killua really differentiate with other characters. Killua may seem more mature and intelligent at some points but he also acts like a kid. Gon may seem innocent and colorful but he can be selfish and take advantage of anything that'll benefit him or his friends in the end. Togashi really emphasizes these points but you can also see that they're just kids in a grown man's world.

I'm guessing the complaint is more that he does not think Gon and Killua act and look how he thinks a 12 year old should act and look.
I dunno if he watched the 1999 series or not but if he has then it would make sense since Gon and Killua are presented as an older
looking 12. Kids grow at different rates and if you look at any middle school you'll find a rather wide range of physical maturity
even within the same grade. Gon is a little older looking in the beginning of the manga (though the drawing are often inconsistent)
so I think that's why the 1999 series looks like an older 12 but in the latter part of the manga Gon is younger looking which
is what I think the 2011 series is going for. Now, in Greed Island and the Chimera Ant arc I think Gon and Killua have a slightly
older look but that could be more that after all their training they built more muscle and gotten stronger and may have not
actually aged at all. I dunno but I think it may be that Gon and Killua are perpetual 12 like how Calvin is perpetually six years old.

That's one thing I really enjoy about the series. It's a difficult concept to pull off. Part 1 of Naruto they were all basically kids but it never really felt like an adult world until really Shippuden but then Naruto and his friends are already grown up. Ok yeah they are teenagers but in that society it's basically grown up.

Bleach on the other hand Ichigo is an older looking teenager and he already seems fairly grown up living in a grown up world. He's definitely not a kid.

One Piece is just adults/older teens ACTING like kids. Particularly Luffy.

Hunter x Hunter it's like Gon is on the wrong side of the tracks.

I agree with this. I do believe though that a major theme of Hunter x Hunter is the forced coming of age for both Gon and Killua, more so for Gon. Killua was born into a situation in which he grew up in a violent and ultimately mature environment, hence why he is the more mature one of the duo.

Gon looks up to that maturity in a way and often looks to Killua for advice or to decide what to do. When it comes to Gon vs. Pitou, it is the first time Gon rejects Killua, this completes Gon's maturity as he is no longer dependant on Killua and makes a big decision for himself, which is ultimately a reckless choice but one Gon stands by (the underlying tension that surrounded their separation recently) and he is ready to be his own man.

They are both 12 but by the current chapters they are arguably as mature as the majority of the adult characters. I guarantee the darker things get in the 2011 series the more mature the protagonists will become.

Long story short: Gon and Killua will mature as the series goes along, give it time guy who complained whose name I forgot.

Also throughout these next two arcs you can really see why they're just kids in the end. I believe heaven's arena is meant to show what both Gon and Killua are capable of. Throughout most of the arc they seem more powerful than normal. Both of the personalities really start to shine and give off a feeling that they're capable of deciding on what step to take next.
Then in Yorkshin most of what we saw takes a complete 180. They become more powerless and seem to be kids who can't control on what's coming next. They seem like they're doing the right thing but in the end they become more of a hindrance and a burden at some points. The Kid/Adult aspect really comes into light which Togashi portrays really well. Thats why i think Yorkshin is such a unique arc because it really shows that there's limitations. They could only go as far as what they're capable of. Theres some things you can control and theres somethings you just can't. Gon and Killua still need a lot of growing to do .. lol

It's the way they're portrayed + character design. It's incredible how many people claim that this anime is faithful to the manga.

Why, because I think the adaptation is no good so far? And if you stopped being such a defensive fanboy, you'd realize that jam1 doesn't even dislike the series.
People above me had already commented on character portrayal and designs so I won't touch upon it anymore. What I'm curious about is your counter claim that the 2011 version is not faithful to the manga. How 'bout listing them here so we can shoot it down and embarrass you? Of course, I'm not saying that the 2011 series haven't done hinky stuff but the '99 anime fans tend to rage on subjects that wouldn't affect the manga canon and selectively forget/dismiss the "illogical and inconsistencies" the '99 series did in return.

Also, why're you being defensive for another person's sake when several people already commented on how dubious his newsflash is? You can't blame my concern since he happened to register on the site 5 days after you, from the same country w/c interestingly write the same way as you do.

Couldn't you compilate all of those images you did into one post, so I can find them easier? I didn't save the ones you did before, and it would be kinda troublesome to look through the whole topic looking for the other ones.

I don't think Mousiehamster and Jam 1 are the same people, also what he said wasn't really a big deal.

all he said was that he thought Gon and Killua looked like eight year olds, and acted like them. I really don't see how they look like eight year olds, but like another poster mentioned, that children of the same age, (in things like middle school) have a wide variety of physical maturity. Also the same should go with mental maturity.

So I don't think we should tell him to drop the series because he didn't like one thing, Its up to him to decide if he likes it or not (he may come around or not), though I do consider their design similar to the manga (I haven't read the whole thing, so tell me if I'm wrong), so if he has a problem with the way they look in the anime, I think he should have problem with the way they look in the manga.

P.S. Its also an anime, and they can/should take some liberties in there direction (humor, seriousness, etc.), so that they can try to appeal to their target demographic, also its nice to have an anime that decides to switch things up, but is also faithful to the manga.

1) I don't care for mules. Seriously, someone using it as a way to reinforce their arguments is just lame. I wont divulge any mule, but I'll know and the person will know. I just don't care how many mules it makes as long as it doesn't spam the hell out of this.

2) I DO like other opinions that doesn't like this anime. Gives me perspective. In the same way I don't enforce people to justify why they like something, I wont be bothered if they just hate the series. BUT in both cases there is no point to even read it because there is nothing to say about it. Feeding both cases is useless and I encourage just ignore and keep your brains posting good arguments and finding interesting stuff.

3) For any report, use the report button. It's for something THERE.

4) Don't bitch about bitching. It's MORE annoying.

I don't see what the problem with me telling him to drop a series that he's already decided to hate.
We all know that for at least till they get past Chapter 341 Gon and Killua will remain the same age
and look young. I dunno maybe they'll look older in Greed Island or the Chimera Ant Arc.
But that's not going to be for a while anyways. Anywho it's pretty clear that he has decided
to just hate on the series and while that's fine he doesn't need to ruin it for everyone else.

But whatever. I'm just "bitching about bitching". So I'm done.

It's just so absurd that someone whined about the 12 years old boys behaving their age.
Episode 27 follows very closely to the manga, especially the light hearted and the boy-adventure tone.
That's how togashi breeze through the beginning part of the heavens arena arc (as well as the greed island), there's humor, boys being boys, adventures, danger, challenges....because...duh! we have two young boys here out for adventures, what did that person expects?
What on earth was this user complaining about? Where on earth did he misunderstood this arc as some serious drama?
What does he have agsinst the author and the manga and how it was written? What was he imagining HxH to be?

I suspect some diehard fan of the 1999 series were so STUCK on the portrayal of the Yorknew arc, where the 1999 anime staff took massive artistic license to change HxH into some Hollywood noir thriller (which I didn't like at all) and Kurapika-centric. Is that why some 1999 anime-only HxH fans could only see HxH as some oh-so-dark serious gritty crime thriller? The 1999 anime was often really OFF in portraying HxH and its characters so I wouldn't surprise some 1999 series fans thought what they saw was canon, and actually disliked the actual light hearted and cult-humor from the manga. The new 2011 adaptation is closer to Togashi's intent than the old 199 series. I HATE the innocent (hence really annoying) Gon in the 1999 series, and forced moralistic stands the 1999 anime staff imposed on the series was really bothering me.

Telling the new anime production to quit is just so obnoxious. The world doesn't revolves around you fragile little ego.

I'm looking forward to the new take on Phantom Troupe, hopefully they'll be closer to the energy and humor of the manga, than the 1999 series. From what I've seen on the OP/ED, some of them are already a vast improvement just on physical looks alone: Bonolenov, Phinks, Pakunoda, Uvogin and Kuroro.

The way he talked about it earlier, it seems like he thinks that this adaptation is not accurate towards manga.

He obviously didn't really read the manga carefully...and mistakenly treated the 1999 series as absolute 'canon'

The 2011 series is adapting the manga, NOT the old anime series.
The new anime's Gon and Killua has similar body and face proportion as how Togashi drew them in later arcs in the manga: Greed Island and on. They are the same height too. The latest chapter (before hiatus) has Gon looking super cute and childish, like the new anime. :)

Yeah you are definitely on point. The early going of the HxH manga was rather inconsistent in the character designs, sometimes Gon would look really lanky then the next chapter short and cute, it was very inconsistent scale wise. But Togashi eventually settled into a standard for the characters, Gon in particular which is seen in the more recent chapters. For consistency Madhouse has decided to use the recent art style, which ultimately looks more modern compared to the scattershot aesthetics of the 1999 series which really were all over the place. I think Madhouse did the right thing and are focusing on the right characters (Gon and Killua). The entire direction is at an advantage as they know what lies ahead, that is what is so exciting about this adaptation to me.
