This was originally posted in the General Chat threat as a random thought:
Bakuman's fatal flaw is that issues and getting up on a soapbox take precedence over the narrative which has created a disjointed and largely unsatisfying mess. There were times when they blended well and times when the narrative was completely abandoned to great effect so information could be relayed (e.g. the explanation of the serialization process was rapped up in the narrative, but stepped back from it for large periods), but it hasn't worked for awhile.
This has caused so many of the problems the series faces:
-Short/underdeveloped arcs
-Character bloat/absent characters
-Lack of character development
