With Jiraiaya in the spotlight right now, and a showdown with Pein/Konan looming, I've been going through some of the older chapters where Jiraiya has been featured. One thing that's struck me is that I don't beleive we've seen the giant scroll being used, even once. For something that large and probably uncomfortable to carry, it MUST have some importance.
I originally thought it to be the blood contract with the frogs, however, after going back and re-reading the manga (chapter 92) that's not the case. Click on the image below for a closer look...

Sorry for the hack edit job in Paint...only have photoshop at work.
I also thought it might have been used to seal Itachi's Amaterasu in chapter 148 (the black fire), however, Jiraiya only used a small scroll for that.
The only other person I can think of that carries a large scroll like that is Ten Ten...
So, the possibilities that I can think of are...1) he uses the scroll to summon weopons in battle, or....2) he uses it to write the icha icha novels.
Any ideas? Also, if we have seen him use it, and I've missed it, please point it out.
In any case, I have a feeling we may end up seeing it in use in the near future.
