only the aquarius stardress doesn't need a key, the others need the key because lucy is drifting directly to it. The problem is that Minerva beat Lucy in the big games and didn't have another fight between them afterwards. So until Lucy finds a parry against Minerva's magic, Lucy loses.

Lucy doesn't need to touch her keys to activate her Stardress therefore she doesn't need the keys to do it. She only needs her keys to summon her spirits.

Chapter 422 page 11 Lucy puts the lion's key to her chest to activate the lion's robe. Horlogium has never cancelled the spacio magic, it has protected it from the effects on everything when it is to pass in another dimension hadès, edolas or jacob. Not the type of magic of minerva because otherwise horlogium would have protected lucy during the naval battle it is not the case so horlogium can do nothing against the magic of minerva.

If Lucy can summon gemini immediately and Copy Marin,then use his "Law of Space",she can win over Minerva as her magic is also "Spatial Magic". However,Lucy still needs the keys to make any Celestial Spirit Magic. Unless she has the way to bypass that or Loke somehow locates the keys and bring them back to her like what happened in her battle against Uusoke the Garou Knight.

That is her major weakness,especially against Minerva's magic. I hope she can summon Spirits using her blood or something. Like her keys became blood-based,just like Lenalee and Kanda and their innocence from D-Gray Man. That way,she can eleminate that weakness.

In chapter 501 lucy uses the key to open scorpio and activates her stardress and the key is always with her so her watch needs the key to activate it. Chapter 7 100yq , Lucy uses her key. We can't see her hand, but the pose shows that she must use the key. For a gemini like that. With taurus she has the key. Just because the author doesn't show the scene doesn't mean Lucy doesn't do it. You can just tell yourself that the author didn't want to show the gesture to avoid wasting a square and that the reader knows how Lucy activates her stardress so there's no need to show the scene. As long as Lucy or some other character won't say that Lucy activates her dress without the key, then in my eyes she has to activate it with her key.

For horlogium the hades attack was dimensional if I remember correctly. On the other hand, sure for Jacob and Edolas. Minerva doesn't send in another dimension. He was able to intervene on arcadio but not on minerva so for me his watch says he can't do it with minerva. Even if he could, he would indicate every time that he has a limited time or can act only once, thus blocking only one attack and not the others. So Lucy loses.

Sometimes I ask myself this question especially with the gemini, leo and caprico dresses which I find weaker than the spirit. Minerva's got her war god magic.
