One Piece was "a great theme" yet the game sucked, there were 0 roleplays, etc.

Any theme could be a good theme, as long as people are interested in it.

They do, at least a little. They are not the biggest factor ever, but it makes the game a bit more enjoyable. I really enjoyed the LoL and Bleach games for example.

Whether a game will be good/entertaining has nothing to do with the theme. The only thing the theme does is maybe get people to play who wouldn't otherwise. Just like you said, OP is a good theme, but you found the game to be sucky.
