Manga, Anime, or Both?

I just wanted to see how many keeps up with each.

Depends. The anime is a hit or miss lately. Some episodes spend take 7 minutes before they even get to the actual episode itself, then spend a lot of time with filler. Example would be not this previous weekend but the one before: Luffy, Zoro, and Kinemon running around the Colosseum over and over (never happened in manga) and doing crap like that creates plot holes as well. (Bellamy told Luffy there was no exit to the Colosseum. If he was running circles around it surely he'd of run across the entrance / exit but the anime leaves details out).

A lot of that has to do with Oda taking breaks, though, and the high pressure job environment of being an animator in Japan (most episodes finish being worked on minutes / seconds before they go live).

The previous ep with Sabo appearing for the first time did a good job, which is rare as of late.

I just follow the manga now, the anime of One Piece is one of the worst animated adaptation of a manga ever...
The characters are badly drawn and don't look like their manga's selves (have you seen Franky during Water 7/Enies Lobby?).
The animation is weird, the pace is bad too, plus there are random fillers like the "battle" between Zoro and Hody.
The protagonists look weaker because of those fillers, plus Luffy for some reason still use the full body Gear 2nd, Sanji still spins for Diable Jambe etc. etc.
I don't know why but people at Toei don't understand the concept of instantaneous, Luffy does gomu gomu no UFO? it takes like a second right? look how much it takes for him in the anime, just look how they move in the manga and how they randomly run in the anime, look at the little battle between Smoker and Tashigi vs Luffy or Zoro vs Monet, i mean seriously?
It's censored too, just think about Whitebeard's head or Zoro's techniques, he just jump in the air and we see a flash...
But there is one thing that really bothers me, Toei exaggerate the characters quirks, Usopp is a coward? add fillers of him screaming around, Zoro sleeps a lot? add fillers about him costantly sleeping and so on and so forth. It's like what Toei did to Chichi in Dragon ball z, she was just a bit "bitchy" in the manga, but she wasn't horrible like in the anime, she even cared about Piccolo after he lived there before the fight with Cell!
Maybe I am too harsh, but it really pisses me off, the anime of One Piece could be really beautiful, instead we get that...

I follow on both manga and anime though the manga is the first priority for me to read before I proceed to watch the anime. Sometimes if I'm really busy, I'll skip one or two episodes and then catch up later.

Overall I like both manga and anime. In manga, it provides the storyline and plots while the animation is catered for a wide variety of audience since it is aired on TV (Japan) in which the age group can vary from as young as kids to elderly people. This group of people would probably less likely to be reading the manga since one has to buy the magazine. (Of course it is just a generalisation as some of them do read the manga ) Moreover almost every household (in Japan) has a TV at home and it is easily accessible for anyone.

I believe that the "child-like" kind of animation could be for these reasons, so that everyone can watch it or "safe to watch", especially for children. Besides, knowing Toei Animation, it is a company that produces a lot of "kiddy" shows like the classic "Doraemon".

i also like the music and sound effects of the shows (and others) which can only be found in the animation. As for the fillers, exaggeration of characters' behaviour and the rest, I will take it as a good laugh. There is a quote that says, "Laughter is the best medicine" for our body - priceless, free and easy to use.

Anime is great but doesn't cover much of the story in one chapeter. Wastes about 5-6 minutes at the start.

In before I used to watch the anime mostly, but when I caught up to the manga I started reading the chapters, and I gotta say it's a lot faster to get to know the story by reading the manga. Most of the time one chapter is divided between 2 or 3 episodes so definitely reading the manga is better on the long run.Not to mention the art in the manga is much better.
The only thing that I miss about the anime is the voice acting, especially in comical situations.

I both read and watch however I read first then go back and watch certain things (like the recent appearance with Sabo). I don't really need to watch the anime stretch out every little scene (especially Dressrosa). Once the arc is over I watch the better episodes from the arc once I know what I'm looking for.

The manga is a must . I'm like 5 episodes behind the anime because the animation isn't so awesome . I rather watch a different anime but I'm currently rewatching the Enel Lobby arc again . Also the Manga really gotten clearer , before the timeskip the inking was horrible which is why I used to adapt to the anime better . Now it seems the manga and anime switch places .

Anime is ok for me . Am happy owner of all One Piece episode.They have to put some filter elements in episode because i and probably a lot more of people dont want to see One Piece ends because of small gap between manga and anime.

I started with the anime in 2006, as soon as I reached the end I went back and read the manga and have kept up since. So I answered both but I only watch the anime anymore for specific fights and scenes I want to see animated.

DEFINETLY BOTH! (but rather only Anime)
i mean i only read the manga because they're further with the plot. but if the anime would be on the same chapter as the manga, i'd only watch the anime because
1. everything is animated, i can feel more emotions
2. it's funnier to watch then to read
3. it's in colour and not b/w
4. it's a little bit extended, some scenes are longer
i don't know what i would do on sundays without one piece, it's like dope to me. i need to watch every sunday a new episode because it's sooo freaking awesome and soooo funny!!!!

The manga it the first..them i watch the anime to see al the details they add and how the voice sound and the effect.

I would LIKE to watch the anime, but the pace kills any thrill I could have wanted from it.

If I had it my way, I would take the anime and chop it down to the necessary parts. I would speedup parts and take out lots of clips that were just unnecessary such as the long pauses where you see everyones faces going "oooo" "aaaaaaa" or the uber long charge up times that obviously weren't there in the manga.

There are moments that I do want to see in anime form, but the tendancy to stretch EVERY moment out for as long as possible KILLS the joy of the show. The opening is about 3 minutes long with cheesy random made up fights between characters we may never even see. Then the narrator giving the catchup on what's currently happening seems another 3 minutes. Taking up 6 - 7 minutes. I know this is necessary to a certain extent, they need to fill a 30 minute gap on TV. But because they want to avoid the horror of creating filler arcs it means they stretch and make up too many bits JUST to keep the pace slow so that it can't overtake the manga. I get all that, but it's just so painful to watch and nigh impossible to enjoy =/

Also makes it hard on new audiences god forbid they ever want to watch the anime from the start, they'd need to watch hundreds of 20 minutes episodes that possibly cover only 1 + 1/2 chapters each at best, and in that space of time they probably could have read 4-5 chapters instead. But if you chopped it down to only the parts worth keeping, they might stand a better chance, heck I'd abridge it myself but it'd look sucky because the back ground music will probably sound VERY WEIRD XD

well this is exactly why i watch the anime. that it's all fleshed out and extended. love the anime

I understand the sentiments. With the manga, we get the updated story; while the anime follows on which gives the animation-stimulus like sound effects, music and animation. That's the beauty of motion pictures.

Dropped the anime years ago, in fact I don't watch any anime in general, except those who are praised well. I would never suggest anyone to watch the OP anime. It sucks badly. Would be a different matter all together if they produced the series is seasons (like for example 20 episodes per year) as they did with Attack on Titan. Thus you could avoid fillers and put more money on quality animation. But that will never happen.

^ yeah far as anime goes... I wish I could find things that could impress me as much as Cowboy Bebop did, it was just in a class of it's own and very few animes since have as much oomth and budget put into it XD Tho the recent films of rurouni kenshin and lupin have got my attention... wrong forum for this non one piece stuff tho XD

Actually the OP anime isn't bad at all. Compare to some anime . Personally I rather the manga but I can vouch that the anime
Should be recommended . I personally watched the dub Anime first years ago on Tv , then I started to watch the sub anime on my laptop , which I thoroughly enjoyed enough to watch over the anime from beginning to end 3 times . Now I like Manga because I'm older I don't mind reading especially after reading so many Sub anime , but it also holds more information then Anime version . That doesn't implied for One Piece . I don't see whàt wrong with one piece from a Anime few ? Also Attack on Titan is a decent anime , that was overly hyped because of camera movement in my eyes . Still a good anime and character .
