I believe D. is probably an actual English word.

All names with D. can be read in English:
  • Monkey D. Luffy
  • Monkey D. Dragon
  • Monkey D. Garp
  • Jaguar D. Saul
  • Marshall D. Teach
  • Portgas D. Ace
  • Portgas D. Rouge
  • Trafalgar D. Water Law
  • Rocks D. Xebec
  • Gol D. Roger
Also Blackbeard would be named "Everything D. Teach" at some point.

I believe D. may be a substantive or verb, so the family name would serve as an adjective or adverb to whatever D. stands for.

Monkey or Jaguar are animals. Marshall, Portgas (Portugal) and Trafalgar are places. Rocks and Gol (Gold) would be minerals.

For example, Luffy's full name would mean "monkey that is X" or "monkey doing X".

However there gotta be some wordplay that I'm missing. :grumble

Zehahahahahaahahahah, you are far away from revealing the truth.
But i don't care giving you the answer.
I'm sure someone will steal it from here, and say it is his theory, this is not a theory it is the truth.

Gol D Roger was trolling with his name, he meant by it DLOG.
DLOG is discrete logarithm cryptography in one piece it is the voice of all things, only those D in their name are capable of understanding the crypted message and will to reach the initial goal.

Quite frankly, I am kinda against D standing for a specific word or something of the sort. The hype around it is so high that its nearly impossible to live up to it if there is something beyond it just being there. My crackpot theory though:

D its a silly random smile in the middle of people's names.

But the author implied it would be revealed in the 8th SBS:

I can't answer it... yet. Please just read it as "D" and don't think too deeply into it, for now.

Hahahaha never thought of this. The captial D does look like an open laughing smile which all Ds tend to do a lot especially as they are dying...but why couldn't it be both? D the smiling Demon or Devil. Or whatever else.

Daring - look at what the Ds we know so far do and have done, from Roger and Garp to Luffy and Blackbeard. Blackbeard dared to kill someone on his old crew, despite the captain being known as the strongest man alive. He then went to Impel Down to break out top prisoners and landed in Marineford to take out Whitebeard and steal his fruit. Luffy has broken into Impel Down as well, along with Enies Lobby, while his father goes directly against the World Government, something no pirate has done so far. Hell Law helped lead to current events by going after Doflamingo.

I forgot what other possibilities I listed. Dickhead/Douche could be one of them, given how they all behave, except for possibly Dragon. Disaster seems spot on too, although in Luffy's case it tends to be humorous.

This is interesting because I expect something mesoamerican to be of importance. Basically I think Skypea is the meta arc, Oda shoved all the mythologies that he knows into this weirdly disconnected arc, and certainly not without reason.

Which also leads me to my main theory what D. is.

I think it likely means Dingir. Dingir (pl. Dingirdingir) is the Sumerian symbol for a god. Alone the symbol means "An", the main sky father deity. But as a prefix it is read as a silent initial d, for example dIM would literally translate as "Storm God" but means Baal Hadad (also known as Adad or Iskur), the canaanite storm deity who has the same symbols as Luffy, the Bull (Luffy's Zodiac and also Ucy in the Corrida Colliseum) and the Thunderbolt (well Luffy is immune to Thunder but that is still an association) and while with these symbols he clearly mirrors Zeus (who is violent and gluttonous like Luffy or his son Heracles, the role model for Oden) the Greeks actually equated Hadad with Kronos (rom. Saturn), since he was also a fertility deity (as storm and fertility is the same in dry regions).
And Saturn is associated with the Devil in some weird esoteric and conspiracy theories and is visually represented by the Straw Hat.
But not just the Saturn, Baal Hadad is also presented as an evil figure in the old testament as a result of monotheism not really liking polytheism.
And there are more of these Dingir, who commonly appeared as horned winged humans (Bilkans, huh), that have this association as devilish figures.

Now you might say "That's super fringe knowledge, how could Oda possibly know this"... But it is already inside One Piece!
Enel is named after Enlil, a Sumerian Storm deity that at one point replaced An as the main God. Enlil is known as the separator of heaven and earth, which is exactly what Enel tried to do. The holy number of Enlil is 50, and Enel had exactly 50 soldiers in his army.
On top of that: The Dingirdingir, here better known as Annunaki are the gods that are associated with weird ancient alien astronaut conspiracy theories. Someone called Zachariah Sitchin once wrote a book that became hugely popular, where he claimed the Annunaki are actually space traveling aliens from a planet called Nibiru.
And what did Enel do? Apparently he traveled to the homeland of his ancestors on the moon.

The references behind Enel are so spot on, that I can indeed assume that Oda is familiar with the ancient Middle Eastern religions. Especially because the Sumerians are also credited as the inventors of cuneiform writing, which closely resembles the Poneglyphs. This form of writing largely disappeared with the Bronze Age collapse, which roughly happened 1200 BC, the "negative value of 800 years ago" (Void Century).

So basically you think the D is going to be a word meaning some kind of deity and the word is Dingir... only problem is it not a very attractive word that anyone knows so Deity might be the better choice in word. I also feel like Devil can be it because that is a deity too albiet a dark one but Devil is too obvious.

No I don't think it has any direct meaning in-story. D. is just D. and it means God's natural enemy, but it won't be spelled out as devil because that's not what it truly is.

It obviously won't be revealed as Dingir because that's a word that can't exist in the One Piece World as Sumerian only existed in reality.

However I do think Dingir is the main source inspiration. On top of the above, Oda is also friends with Hiroyuki Takei, the Author of Shaman King, who also featured a Dingir (Shamash) in his story.

Roger brought about a new age, an age of piracy. Blackbeard killed that age, and Luffy's stated to usher in a new age. Dragon, Ace, and Garp played a part in Luffy's fate, perhaps the most vital parts, though Dragon by siring Luffy and saving him from Smoker. And now Law is letting Luffy clash with Doflamingo and Kaidou.

Not a new age, but A New Dawn, something greater than an age.

They're still living in the World Government Age. The end of the WG is near, 6 months away story time.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if it came out to be that D stood for 'Doofus'? 🤣 "The D in your name means Doofus, Luffy. All of those that carry the D are all people that do incredibly stupid things. They are just so stupid that they laugh when they are dying because they think they picked up a "free man" when they were jumping on turtles... " 😋

D is a term that refers to people who come from the Ancient Kingdom.

If the WG want anything hidden, it's because:
  • It's related to the Ancient Kingdom.
Poneglyphs - Banned from being read.
D initial - Hidden from the public.
Void Century - Hidden, it's related to the Ancient Kingdom.
Mentioning the name of the Ancient Kingdom - Results in death.
Stories about Nika - Death/Imprisonment.

This has been consistent with the story.

We've also been told the D is a clan, so we know the D very likely stands for the name of the Ancient Kingdom or something of that nature.

I've always thought D were the leaders of the Ancient Kingdom, hence why they are God's enemy. I'd wager the Ancient Kingdom was not a monarchy so wouldn't say the D are royalty but definitely the descendants of the upper political class.

As for what D stands for, might be something like Dragon, Destiny, Democracy, : D, etc...
