That's untrue, many people voted for her due to how Lambu sold her, and trusting the opinion of others that passed a view on her as being amazing - specially in comparison to FT chars and Mikasa, who are portraited as plain. A campaign and support-posts do help, but they alone will never carry some non-popular character far(which Holo wasn't). Thinking that is lying to yourself.

That's a different event though, hard to compare that. Not sure how the statistics on number of people participating in it even is compared to the waifu one, and they seem to have a different degree of seriousness/salt involved. Can't say anything about DGM since I don't know that series at all whatsoever, only through Erin. And even within popular series(like FT) are characters even the fans of the series hate.

Imo it's the same thing, with different genders. Usually candidates win turns with 20-30 votes, that was the same in the Husbando one. I'm not saying being mainstream isn't a great advantage, but campaigning good nominations can carry you to a title, that's not lying to any self, it has happened... And again, picking popular good nominations is also always an option.

What does genre matter? Sure RPGs are better for experiencing the story through the game, but just because OW is a competitive multiplayer game at it's core, doesn't mean the characters having nothing to them. Complaints about comics, stories, or cinematics don't seem very valid to me IMO. Just because you have to take an extra step to get the whole story doesn't mean the story is nonexistent (you might not like the story or the medium, but that's not what's being talked about here).
