Rooney rule is stupid they should just remove it
No it should be improved and loopholes removed. Like requiring interviewing minority assistants that are currently employed in the league. No more bullshit like calling in Marvin Lewis to interview for a favor.

Not sure how else you get a bunch of old rich white dudes to consider minority candidates. The Rooney rule is necessary. Imperfect but necessary.

All this is just made even weirder because I never really understood why the Dolphins fired him to be honest. The Dolphins were good. They went 9 - 8 with bad QB play. Can't really ask for more than that IMO.

You only need to look at the makeup of the players in the league as well as assistant coaches and then compare it to other professional sports leagues to know that the Rooney Rule as it is isn't getting the job done. The MLB is something like 40% minority players and 20% of their managers are minorities. At one point nearly half the head coaches in the NBA were black and even now it's something like 30%. Still quite lopsided but when you compare it to the NFL only having 1 minority head coach in Mike Tomlin, it looks downright cutting edge. What exactly is the NFL's excuse?

Especially when there are candidates everybody knows out there. Byron Leftwich for example. Not saying he automatically gets the job but he certainly deserves an interview just on the basis of what he was able to do offensively with Brady these last two years.

Honestly would doing these teams a favor by making them sit down with people like him.

I think there's a bit more nuance with Leftwich, but I guess it is interesting that the reporting with him was only about the Jaguars and not more teams. Perhaps that's his doing but with Brady retiring maybe his options would be a bit more open.

The reporting is that Leftwich wanted Baalke out if he was hired and while totally understandable,as someone who has no track record as a head coach, it was probably asking for more control then any other first-time head coach would be given.

He's 100% right to want that. Baalke is terrible. And the Jags need to accept that. Good coaching can't save a team from a bad GM. All it can do is soften the hurt a little.

Improve it how tho? Is they already had a coach in mind who they want to hire (who isn’t black) I feel like it’s a waste of time to even have the interview. The giants situation was they wanted daboll from the get go. I Feel like they be wasting both their time having the interview because of the rule.

You don't know until an interview happens IMO. The requirement is still better than having none. Until the rule was put in place there had only been 6 minority head coaches in the history of the NFL.

I believe now you're required to interview 2 people and it's required for coordinator positions as well.

People seem to be upset about this but I don't really get it? Are there people who aren't Seahawks fans that would consider Wilson an all-time great?

I mean, it seems like a bit of those "trying a bit to hard hot takes" to me. Just saying something to get a reaction out of people who are big fans of Russell Wilson.

Is he an all-time great? Depends how big the list is. Definitely not top 10 all time. Maybe top 20. Definitely top 30. He's got a superbowl ring and a bunch of records to his name. He's one of the best dual threat QBs in NFL history. In the here and now is he as good as Burrow, Allen, Mahomes, or Rodgers? No, he's not. Is he as good like Lemar? Probably. Just a better passer and not nearly as good of a runner. I think you could win a superbowl with either. Need a good team around them though. Which is true of every QB honestly.

Yeah I mean, anyone on that network is practically paid to say stupid shit.

From my perspective I think people are overreacting a bit tbh. I'm just not sure he has the resume to where an argument can't be made from Clark's perspective there.

Putting Burrow with those other 3 already...?

One thing about Wilson...he's solid and always has been even in collage.
Not many teams would complain if they landed him....
Stats are cool and all...but think greatness depends on what you bring to a team as a key component.
It wasn't like Bucs were some bad fukan ream Brady went to and won it...they were good but he was one considered great because he cherry picked an opportunity...who would think otherwise Wilson couldn't fo it in same situations(in NE too)is a fool xD

Potentially. Clearly the track record isn't there yet but the same can be said of Mahomes and Allen to a degree. Mahomes and Rodgers get hyped a lot and they're clearly extremely skilled but they've both got one ring, same number Wilson has got. And as impressive as Allen has been he hasn't won anything real yet. They've both been in the league 5 years. Joe Burrow is a second year player and he's done a lot in that time. Even with his first year derailed due to injury.

If he wins next weekend... yeah I'd put him with the elites. He'd have earned it.

The Buccaneers weren't shitters, but Brady absolutely elevated that team in a way no other free agent could have, even Wilson. I mean yeah, Wilson can definitely have success elsewhere and maybe even compete but until he does that I can't confidently say this guy is one of the all-time greats. He's not going to do what Brady did in Tampa and if on the field stuff were all that matters, I'd take Rodgers over him as well. I think Wilson had some great years and stats but those Seahawks teams were nothing without their defense.

Well if we're talking about potential then no argument really. I'd be surprised if Mahomes never gets another ring tbh, but there's obviously a lot of factors at play there. Allen is a bit like Roethlisberger to me, just without the early success I guess.

The replay didn't look like anything to do with his feet or getting caught in the turf, he just torqued it during a lean/cut and it gave out. He tore the same ACL 2 years ago IIRC.

Watching the sequence carefully.

Its hard to explain.

His cleat might have gotten stuck in the turf, which is what caused him to take a bigger step than normal afterward to unstuck his foot.

I think it was just bad luck with his planting leg, just too much momentum trying to stop all at once because the ball was thrown behind him. Unfortunately this is how many ACL injuries happen, no actual contact or trauma done to the knee, but the speed and strength these players move at just tears stuff. A lot of the time the ligaments are already slightly torn and a freak thing like that just causes something more severe or even a complete tear. What's notable in his case is that people will swear by modern surgery techniques used for those knee ligaments often making them stronger after, so I wonder if he wasn't already injured and he just didn't know it.

I'm sure the joke has been made already, but dude should have just beaten his wife instead. Would have returned after their bye.
--- Double Post Merged, ---

Yeah, I think I'm with him honestly...

It shouldn't be the the player's problem that the NFL is suddenly cozying up to Vegas so it looks even worse.

Stupid as hell error though, should have just had a friend do it for him.
--- Double Post Merged, ---

Not sure I really get this move for either side honestly
--- Double Post Merged, ---

The Panthers' previous owner was forced to sell the team due to sexual harassment allegations. Yet this is a move the new ownership is willing to consider. Why? Because of maybe some Clemson overlap? What a fucking joke lol.

Well the Steelers have entered the Mitch Trubisky era. To put this on record so I can be made fun of for it later, I love this pickup.

There were Steelers fans out there that had dreams of some big name or other walking in. But I was never one of those. I don't believe you build sustained success by buying high on free agents. You sell high on those. If you're going to pay out, you want to do it to players who have played well for your team, in your system, and who you want to keep.

Is he the long term answer? Probably not, unless the coaching in Chicago is really THAT bad. But they aren't paying a lot to get him for 2 years either. So they can focus those resource and strengthening the rest of the team on a fundamental level so when the right answer at QB does come along they're ready sustain a real playoff run. And along the way put whoever they do have in there in the best position to succeed.

Trubisky is always brought up as a foil to these young kinda-busts that haven't panned out, because statistically he outperforms them. Don't really know how well it'll work out but it's the smart play. He's a stopgap that you can probably win games with as long as he has enough of a supporting cast. Deshaun Watson might have been worth mortgaging the future for, but if the team I rooted for signed him then that's probably the day I stop rooting for them, truthfully. I think Browns fans seem to be kinda going through this right now if it's true that they might ship off Mayfield for him.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

The schadenfreude is so abundant and intense that my feelings have looped back around and I'm actually annoyed at how fucking insanely stupid the Browns are.

Just think if the same thing happens in Atlanta if Watson is traded to the Saints. At least in that situation you have an aging QB that probably doesn't deserve the kind of cap hit Ryan has.
--- Double Post Merged, ---

welp... there you go LOL
