Oda saying Zoro's sense of direction is inherited. PinZoro, Pin the tail on the donkey.

I was mistaken about Ushimaru being Zoro's father but definitely went with Uncle next. Just not Grand Uncle. The other interesting thing, Zoro, while claiming to not know his parents probably lied (or it is implied he doesn't) Just like Sanji hid his lineage. And Luffy just was oblivious to having a father.
Zoro started out as pirate hunter and wanted to become World's Strongest Swordsman.
Zoro Grandpa, Wano swordsman.
Zoro father, killed by Pirates.
Zoro father named Arashi
Zoro in Seastone Cuffs (Made in Wano), calls usopp Arashi (even if the specific term has a meaning in Japan)

Or Zoro father was killed by Mihawk. Given that Zoro's family is a line of Samurai. Also recall Mihawk in Marineford, the mention of every insect he kills. My guess is he also took a liking to Zoro because he faced Zoro's father and recalls the name.

I think this goes to show how much priority Luffy’s battle and Momo’s position took over other details like Zoro’s lineage. Oda prob figured that the little flashback with old Kozaburo was enough to hype up the sword Enma for Zoro and nothing more, because anything more would have taken more focus away from the priories in Oda’s view.

Zoro and Quina are relatives, so it makes sense that he rightfully got her katana, a family heirloom, this should also apply to Shusui. Also curious to know if there is was a reasons or circumstances that brought some of Zoro's ancestors to leave or they simply had the same Dream as Oden.

People seem to be mad about Chopper not being able to cure the smile side effect.

What are the general thoughts around this?

To me it makes sense that he can't do it, I know people are using the excuse of him having made rumble balls so he should be able to reverse the affects of this but I highly doubt it's the same type of science.

Making modifications to his DF transformations is very different to me too... like, Queen could create a "rumble ball" effect for Black Maria but he needed to buy the Smiles from Caesar, and definitely didn't know how to cure the failed sideeffects.

Chopper eventually becoming able to heal it is possible, though, but he would need time to study the field. Perhaps Vegapunk could help him.

Yes, I was thinking the exact same thing.

Wait, really? In my head removing smile side effects in my mind is akin to removing a devil fruit from someone without killing him. In this case compounded by the devil fruit in question being akin to a shitty lead covered knockoff from whichever third world country. Devil fruits presumably work by altering the target's lineage factor to grant them new traits and abilities. What exactly is chopper supposed to do with people who basically scrambled their lineage factors with toxic nonsense? Lineage factor manipulation is pretty far out science in OP, there's no reason to think chopper can touch this at all.

Caesar is a jackass whose head was so far up his ass that he couldn't stop stroking his ego when he finally made a product that barely worked 10% of the time. Mediocrity and hubris at it's finest. Queen is familiar enough with lineage factor that he gave himself the vinsmoke's abilities. But ultimately his achievements on this were just an immitation of judge's work. Judge I suppose has actual achievements on this front considering he was able to give his children abilities that could potentially rival devil fruits and is able to create a straight up clone army and nation. With this in mind a hypothetical cure is maybe up vegapunk's or judge's alley though IMO it's a big ask even of vegapunk, let alone judge or chopper.

It feels like a missed opportunity for Chopper. I never expected him to do it immediately, but I had hoped he'd have discussed the issue with Vegapunk. That being said, I really don't mind. It sucks for SMILE users, but they can still live a normal life.

Failed SMILE fruits still function as Devil Fruits on some level, so the Lineage Factor still has to play a role. Ever since the introduction of the concept, I've also viewed the Rumble Ball as a drug that tweaks Chopper's Lineage Factor to change certain qualities. However, after seeing what King, Queen, and Sasaki were capable of with their fruits and thinking back to what Kaku was able to do with his early on, I'm starting to think that Zoans have more control over their bodies than they think and Chopper's drugs just made it easier for him to do.

But I digress, if the Rumble Ball does tweak one's Lineage Factor, it did seem like, with the right information, Chopper could "cure" those afflicted with SMILE. At the very least, tweak it so that they can't laugh. On the flip side, I can see why Oda probably didn't want to address that, because that's a potentially deep rabbit hole to go down as curing SMILES could be seen as being a step away from "curing" DFs as a whole. Or, as already mentioned, maybe the Lineage factors are just too screwed up to be mitigated.

I don't see any reason to think rumble balls tweak lineage factors. The implication would be that every transformation a zoan has has different lineage factors. Which sounds insane.

The way I see it, the Rumble Ball basically gave him free rein over his body by manipulating the Lineage Factor he already has within him. He doesn't have multiple or anything like that. He isn't adding new powers or anything crazy, he's just enhancing the features he already has access to already, thus what I meant by saying he tweaks his Lineage Factor.

Of course, he doesn't need it anymore to do his other forms, but he still uses it to "awaken", which also seems related to the Lineage Factor going by Vegapunk's words.

Furiko sailed out with Kozaburo, Minatomo, and 22 other people from Wano, so it makes me wonder how many Wano descendants are out there that don't know are descended from Wano.

Fujitora maybe
Fujitora might be a good case of being a Wano descendant, seeing as how Kozaburo's crew left 55 years ago and that he's 54, having traces of Wano like with clothing and food choices without him boasting actually being from there.

For the SMILE people, well its pretty clear now that we see Kaido vs Luffy and Kaido had all these modes and Luffy remained in a constant state of laughter (more controlled), that the SMILE side effect is something specific and linked to Zoan awakenings. And the SMILE might actually be the whole:
Gorosei "The Zoan's have a mind of their own." And basically them looking like that is the Zoan's mind manifested.

I wish Zoro's lineage was never brought up ever and his connection to Ryuuma was always going to be Oda coyly shrugging at the reader with a knowing smile, and that was IT. Stupid fucking special bloodlines are the bane of my existence in comics and manga. It's a crutch, it's unnecessary, and it always makes the worst discussions in fandom.

That said, glad we got multiple chapters of Orochi dying, plans being made by the Alliance that either didn't make sense or weren't followed, characters running around in circles for dozens of chapters just to get to their next fight, Hiyori's entire existence wasting everyone's time, and most of all Toki being completely glossed over. Wano was a huge mess problems- Zoro not getting some family story derailing the arc even further was not one of those problems imo.

It almost angers me that oda is all "I don't think we need to elaborate on this further". I mean, why build this up over god knows how many chapters? Oda could at least have the decency to admit he wanted this to be relevant but when the time came he couldn't fit it into the arc.
He says "we don't need to elaborate on it further" and then immediately elaborates on it further. Should've never said a thing about Zoro's lineage, it's by far the least interesting thing about him- and I don't consider him particularly interesting outside of his role as Luffy's wing and his ambitions to overthrow Mihawk.

I agree that the rumble ball should not change the lineage factors the same way chemical products don’t change DNA. From my point of view, the Zoan DF alters the lineage factor by adding an animal lineage factor to it (DNA engineering). Then the DF user has the power by will to choose which part of his lineage factor genes will be expressed (100% original, 100% animal or a mix of original and animal genes). The rumble balls simply grants the DF user with more possibilities to express a mix of genes hence more hybrid forms.

Could be it isn't unlike Oda to just give that detail then expand on it later. Look what just happened with Whitebeard and Rocks, and even the original Stussy.

Technically as for vagueness about pirates we still don't even know if Zeff was part of some major pirate crew or was just an actual random pirate crew not noteworthy originally. It doesn't have to be in both cases but it could be in both or either.
