"I love how the live action is enjoyable by people who would never watch an anime (like my 77yo dad).

I told him I watched the anime already and he told me "No you have to watch THIS ONE, it's really good" and I though it was very funny lmao "He's elastic!!!" Super hyped "Yeah I know lol, glad you're enjoying it" Maybe it's a sign for me to start watching One Piece again, it's been so long"

"Idk if this community approve of the life action “One Piece” on Netflix but…

Let me just say, I’m so grateful for this show. I love anime but I have never watched a single episode of One Piece. I have a teen son, who barely communicate with me and today he asked if I wanted to watch something with him. I was shocked!!! I said yes and then he put up the first episode of One Piece on Netflix. I kept asking questions and he was so happy to answer them. You don’t understand, this is the most interaction we had in years. At some point, he laid his head on my lap and I felt like crying. I didn’t know his hair was so long.
Anyways, this show will forever be one of my favorite one because it brought me closer to my son. We only watched episode 1 so we’re watching episode 2 tomorrow. I really cannot wait."

Japanese dub is only selectable in some countries. You need a VPN client for this.

It's sad that there is no way (CGI effects?) to make people look starved and dried out. This show definitely needs it in quite a few scenes

One of the fishmen Zoro cut had a Wilhelm Scream; 10/10

The lack of Hachi was really jarring. I get that he'd have been crazy hard to get right with the VFX required but he's such an important character later on. They made references to Montblanc Noland but didn't substitute the character that'd be the impetus for *that punch* later on. Weird when so much of this season pretty expertly set up S2 stuff at least.

The Walk didn't have Overtaken was really weird... and also just not being "a walk" at all? The last episode itself was paced well, but the production felt rushed for it. Luffy was strong enough to still have the scene where his grip breaks Arlong's blade, but he didn't get the dope scene of punching the huge stone border of Arlong Park apart

No Gum Gum Fishnet or Arlong Teeth Castanets. 0/10

Listening to various lines in the different dubs. Sanji's lines in French oh dang

Might be a hot take, but I didn't miss Hachi at all. Yes, I do love him in the manga, but here it just didn't matter much. Would just have been lot of vfx effort for very minor purpose that might have felt like sidetracking. I think if the series goes to Saboady, his role there can be taken by Kuroobi or any other recognizable support fishmen really. Might even feel like a stronger redemption arc, if the apology comes from someone who was truly antagonistic and not just goofy.

More than Hachi I actually missed Moomoo. (We see him illustrated in one of the maps though). The Arlong Pirates kinda lacked that little something extra kick to make them more feared than other East Blue pirates.

But even more than that, I feel like Bellemere and Genzo would have needed more screen time for the arc to hit better. It didn't quite evoke the same feels as the manga.

Yeah it just makes me wonder what character is going to fill his roll if we ever make it a zillion years from now to Sabaody.

Including the mayor of Orange Town and the quick cameo of the dog felt like.... man, c'mon. Orange Town without the sad Seymour-from-Futurama interaction between Luffy and the dog made it feel a bit flat. Then their cameo just reminded me of that

As cute as the dog was, they should have cut the cameo. It just reminded anime/manga people that a very endearing early mini-arc/scene was cut.

I understand why it was cut. Script and plot structure would have been totally different if Luffy had escapades outside the tent. Would have needed more locations, more actors, shooting animals is always super slow, they might have needed Ritchie or some other animal to motivate why Buggy Pirates were so keen on raiding a pet shop etc.

This goes to my general mixed feelings on how they re-wrote arcs. On the other hand I think they were quite clever and good, but on the other hand I missed for things we didn't get. Like it was great and bit dissapointing at the same time. Weird sensation.

Even when they butchered Sanji's story in term of Gin. Especially his tendency of doing things out of principle despite consequences. I still enjoyed episode 6 by a lot. I think my highest rated episode of the entire season is episode 6. But 7 and 8, I really feel the frustration with all the changes. The frustration probably is that, it probably didn't need that much to fix the issues that I perceived. At least, despite how corny the last few minutes were. I feel genuine emotion. Review it latter I guess.

Ok I just finished watching episode 1, and to be honest, I found it quite enjoyable. It exceeded my expectations in many aspects - the casting, the lines, and the scenery were all spot-on. There were some minor differences and scenes that were done differently from the source material, but overall, it was a funny and enjoyable watch. I m pretty disappointed with Ben Beckman's casting, though. Inaki as Luffy is really growing on me, and Mackenyu's portrayal of Zoro was impressive and, yeah pretty hot. Initially, I had my doubts, but I'm pleasantly surprised. I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing Sanji (especially after the leaked Baratie scene) and Mihawk in future episodes. Ah an Buggy at the end , really loved it ! :nod

Episode 6 changed a lot and I super enjoyed it. Ep 7 and 8 really made me frustrated. I am finally understand why. Because it doesn't make too much sense. And that took me out of the story, and then I start to notice what missing. I supposed 6.5/10 for episode 7. Fine to good.

What I do like is the Buggy's inclusion as a way to get to their next destination. His antic is nice. He got to be a recurring character again for the next season. And then, probably won't hear from him until season 5 or 6. Arlong Park and the fishmen looks great. The prosthetic really nice looking. The whole atmosphere like a gang hanging out. Arlong himself is actually pretty intimidating. I do like the way he dealt with Nezumi.

Arlong here is kinda weird. The Arlong in the show was well exp. He was a beaten dog, and learned a lot of new tricks. He worked within the system. Becoming lord of East Blue. He know what monsters there are in the Grandline that are way way way above his paygrade. So his plans made no dang sense. That also including his dealing with Nami. There is no reason for him to burn down her village. He can't keep her loyalty that way. And he just also burning down his source of income. So this Arlong is very different. Even within the logic of the show, it still make no sense in regard to Nami's loyalty. Hell, why paid Nezumi when you shit up even a bigger bullshit that can't be hidden no more. May as well killed the guy. Is this Arlong try to hide his cards or strength. Or is this Arlong tried to show how big his D is? I am not sure with this 50-50 that the show is going for.

The Garp stuffs are better here than in other episodes. I do like he had a chat with Zeff. And Koby-Helmeppo are bonding. But as a former navy, see this noob had so much access to the vice admiral is weird. Garp is an inspire figure among the marines. I wish we see more people in awe of him and inspired by him . And what the F with Koby's motivation. Is he looking out for Luffy or not. Why the hell volunteer this info to Garp. This whole subplot should have cut down by a ton. Koby should have had some cool boot camp training, and bonding with Helmeppo. And or bonding doing grunt work. And then maybe show up at the last episode. Because this is not really working. This whole half measure bullshit dance that he does.

This Garp is just not the manga Garp. It could be acceptable as shown. If they just cut half of his scenes. Because one scene of him acting like a broom up his bum hole is okay. But this repetitive reminder that now basically pigeon holed him into this character that is totally opposite of the manga. Had there been less of him. We could say maybe just this instance that he is in this end of his bipolarness. But the rest of the time, he is in the other end.

Nami's flashback is okay. Not as strong as Sanji or Zoro. Maybe comparable to Luffy. It is the lack of time that really affect the flashback. I don't even remember if in the original version, Nami came to Arlong or Arlong discovered Nami. Nami's aesthetic is okay to good. I really really don't like the changes with Nojiko and the villages. Nami's theme is a great song. But it didn't go well with the emotional scene, and it came off a tad weird in those scene. The Nezumi-Nami scene sort of weak. It can be fix pretty easy. She should go ham on him. But they didn't' want to do it because you know Nezumi must have scenes with Garp next episode. Her big emotional scene is good I guess. But due to the changes in the villagers. It lost a huge huge huge impact. And I don't know why this change. It ain't like they save any time really.

There are two problems I see with the changes in the villagers. One I will mentioned in episode 8 review. But for this one, it affect Nami's emotional scene. Losing 100 million berries shouldn't cause Nami that rage and ask Luffy to help her. It was the villagers storm off to Arlong Park that done it. Her inability to stop them. And she knew they would get massacre. That helplessness. This is a huge huge downgrade. And she didn't even see the village burning. At least, show that she saw the village burning and then start stabbing herself.

Totally agree with these views. Though in case of Arlongs aims and goals, there is a lot of meta knowledge for us manga readers. We know more about the world and Arlongs past, that this plan of his was kinda odd. But if you are show only, there likely no issue here.

The second point of the villagers is essentially what I wrote before. Bellemere, Genzo and even Nojiko needed more screen time and fleshing out. Now we as viewers we didn't have that much attachment to the village, villagers needed more endearing moments. It was still awful what happened, but it didn't hit the same way with reduced screen time for side characters.

More than Hachi I actually missed Moomoo. (We see him illustrated in one of the maps though). The Arlong Pirates kinda lacked that little something extra kick to make them more feared than other East Blue pirates.
I totally agree. And the entire Calm Belt/Sea King nest for that matter. I really hope they showed in next season to show why they need to go to Reverse Mountain.

Ep 8 is a 7 out of 10. Some highs, some miss opportunities.

We saw the villagers marching here. Gonna put a highlight on Genzo for a moment. This is a good job portrayal of a small town cop, that has the community trust. So One Piece generally do a good job giving agency to the islander natives. Like Boodle against Buggy. Kaya stand up to Kuro, and use her assets to attempt to save the villagers. Or Baratie chefs. The villagers at Nami's village is especially strong. They endure for so long. They knew Nami's helping them. But at the same time putting up that act to protect her. And also wishing she just left them behind. And once, Arlong hurts Nami. That was the breaking point for them. Their anger. And even through out the finale, they were helping out Luffy when he drown. They did their share to contribute to the victory at the end. The changes rob them a lot. Just like the Baratie chefs before them. It meant to make Nami's struggle even more impactful but I actually think it cheapened it.

For example, Nami shouldn't have said anything about the chain. Heck she shouldn't even be in that room. Sometimes, it is more emotionally impactful without these unnecessary dialogues. I wish Arlong had fight Luffy up and down that building, to show case his sword a bit. And then they got to the map room. And Luffy saw the cuff, and maybe he got hit into a pile of maps. And saw Nami's signature and blood stain. And that made him rage even more. What the show did kinda rob Luffy of his characteristic of understanding the situation pretty well. Of understanding people's pain. And it also rob Nami's emotional moment of seeing maybe couple of maps or one map flew out from the rubble at the end.

Usopp was rob of a heroic big moment in his arc. So if his fight with Chew could be his big moment for this season. It start out super super good. Chew's abilities translated super well. The ketchup star is good too. I guess it is hard to show that he had some misgiving about his cowardice. I guess you can even show it nonverbally like he is shaking or something. Or not at all. Instead show case how smart he is, that he got a jump on Chew as Chew walk away. And then finishing with his flame star. And I guess they could show his cowardice by him shaking and beating a half dead Chew. The fight ended up FINE, I guess. Could have been so much better without much extra resources or time.

Zoro and Sanji's fights are very very good. Some of the highlights of the episode. Although, Sanji wasn't able to show case his tactical nature against Kurobbi. What we got is very good to overlook it. Arlong vs Luffy can be better. But what we got is good. Luffy had a lot of agility in this fight than his other fights across the season. Maybe next season, they get better with this. He hitting the building is good. Arlong is a bit lacking, despite how great his portrayal so far (with the exception of confusing mess of plans and motivations).

Garp v Luffy is okay. Not good enough to justify all that fillers across the season. Here is an instance where the villagers can be heroic and speak up for the strawhats and get angry at the marine for tolerating the Fish man pirates. It would have provide some good growth for Helmeppo and Koby. Not sure why Sanji and Zoro didn't jump in. You could show they got busy with other marines or Bogard. But the Garp v Luffy is good.

Koby delivering the bounty to Luffy is really nice. I do felt the bond that they have. The other people react to the bounty is fine. The highlight was Mihawk and Shanks. I sincerely hope they ventured into the Calm Belt in the beginning of next season to show why they need to take that entrance to the Grandline. Because normies would get really confuse. The ending is a tad corny. But I kinda really really like it to see all the younger selves spoke of their dream. I got a tad teary there. I got so frustrated watching this arc. Until the end, and the end is so corny. But it lift my frustration by a lot. And I am glad. Or else this season ended in bad taste consider how much I enjoyed ep 1 to 6.

Overall rating7.5

Average out to 7.5 which is somewhere from Good to Great. Season 2 can be even more lit. I hope both season 2 and 3 got green lit at the same time. Because at it stand, maybe 3 months for the writer/actor strike to be resolved and for Netflix to greenlit the next season. 6-9 months to work on the script, pre production, audition for new roles, location scouting, set design, apply for tax exempt blah blah. Another 9 months to film. And then 6 months for reshoot, post production, and promotion. So at least 2+years for season 2. But if they green lit season 3 at the same time. The wait between 2 and 3 won't be too bad. Nami's actress is much older than the group. This can be bad. I do hope they giving like an addition 2 to 4 episodes. The extra time would have solve so many of the problems I had with this season. Heck had this season not have like 8 episodes of an hour length. But instead, 16 episodes of 35 to 40 minutes. That may resolve some issues. Or just additional 5 to 10 minutes added for each episode.

Dude I know what the term means. Couching your opinion about OPLA from this moral high horse is patently absurd. Out of all the problems america has with cultural appropriation, I can't think of anything further down the list than OPLA and you're acting as if it's a cornerstone issue to be judgey about. You're being a buzzkill just to be a buzzkill but trying to frame it like there's some ethical merit to it. Fuck outta here.
I said cultural imperialism.
You talk about cultural approbation, then proceed to insult me.
You missed the point here is all I can say.

So, where to begin, where to begin...

I rarely binge watch shows, but, obviously, this was a special occasion. And, without taking notes or anything, I'm not going to remember any particular specifics without skimming through the episodes, but I'll just give a general overview.

Well, I like it. I like it quite a bit. While my rating may not reflect that, I do think this was much better than was anticipated for the most part. Is it perfect? Of course not. It could've been much better. But given the sheer immensity of this particular adaptation, what they managed was still quite impressive and commendable. If anything, their own ambition to see this through can be readily seen throughout the entire series.

Since it's an adaptation, they had to speed through those first few arc, but I did like how they pieced it together towards the end. Some of the changes, I'm not particularly sure about, but I guess we'll have to see. At some points, I did recognize that my fan boy brain was just nitpicking though and some of those moments may not matter in the grand scheme. That being said, they've got enough good will that I'm willing to see how they follow through. Also, while I wasn't super interested in following it, using Coby and Helmeppo's cover story as the B-Plot for this season was genius.

My biggest issue overall is the technical stuff. And not just the CG. With that, they just didn't really set up the motion for the larger attacks well and it didn't look right. But my main problem was with the editing. Some of the choices there didn't make any sense. Unnecessary back and forth cuts, cuts that were too early or too late, cuts that repeated actions. I like video editing a lot, so stuff like that stands out to me. Also, the cinematography was rough as well. I really don't understand why there were as many close ups as there were. It works to show off the intensity of some scenes, but something there would be a close up just because.

Obviously though, the characters were the best part. They had a lot of chemistry and really embodied the key traits of the Strawhats.

Luffy didn't nail all of his lines and he came off as unnatural and stiff in some scenes at the start, but he kept the energy up and whenever he was with the crew, he was firing on all cylinders. If/When a season 2 comes around, I feel he's going to be better. Character wise, he was Luffy. I did appreciated the more introspective moments they added for the character. It was a nice change of pace. The stuff with Shanks was hit or miss. That tiny ass hat on Shanks head was particular distracting during his backstory.

Zoro's great. No notes. They pulled more from his Time Skip stoicism, while also keep in some of the goofier aspects of the character. Santoryu was sacrificed on the alter of convenience however. It makes sense, but it's noticeable. That said, he had the strongest introduction of the crew. I don't even think they needed the Mr. 7 fight really, because the whole bar scene was fine on it's own. His backstory was kinda plain though. Mainly because the local didn't shift much.

Nami was also great and they certainly gave her a lot of screen time. They clearly went all in on giving her the most overarching character arc since we were building to Arlong Park. Her trust issues and her growing to cherish the crew. It was really well done and the actor acted the hell out of those scenes. That being said, I think she kinda stole some shine from a certain Sniper during the Syrup Village episode, but more on that later. Her backstory was pretty good. I didn't get the emotional oomf that I expected, but it was still good. Unfortunately, we didn't get much from Nojiko or Genzo, but what we got was fine.

Usopp feels like he was lost in the shuffle in this adaption. I don't think they really figured out where to slot him comfortably. It's a shame, because the actor was killing it as him, but he wasn't given much to do. As I mentioned with Nami, she really stole his shine with Kaya as she was the one who mainly motivated Kaya to be a better person and broke her out of her shell so to speak. Feels like that should've been Usopp's job. At the very least, they should've kept the scene where Usopp blew up at Kuro and punched him for bad mouthing his family. He can be a coward, while also being proactive about things. Couple that with the general pacing issues of Usopp's section as a whole and the rather boring set design of Kaya's house, and you have my least favortie span of episodes.

Sanji's my favortie character, so I'm going to pay close attention to whatever goes on with him and I've got to say...I love him. Foul language, a massive flirt, and sweet kicks? All I need. Not only that, but they came in hot with the rivalry with Zoro and it's the best. I'm not going to lie, the scenes with those two alone boosted my rating for episode 7. The curl was the only thing missing. I feel his backstory was done the most justice, mainly because it wasn't something they could really cheap out on.

Overall, I enjoyed it, but it wasn't without it's issues. In my heart of hearts, I want to give it a 7, but right now, it's just straddling the line. Maybe I need to sit on it a bit longer.

Just finished watching the show and it's better than i expected.

Of course it is nowhere near as good as the source material but considering the limitations of transferring to live action it is actually not bad.

I really hope it gets season 2. It was not perfect, but potential is high and they did the hardest and most important part right- the Strawhat Pirates themselves.

Now Alabasta is a more coherent self-sustainef story itself, and lends itself to drama series format a lot better than East Blue. Most of the problems imho raised from the need and attempt to make East Blue less episodic and flow better. Alabasta won't have that challenge.

Also I think this series improves on Oda writing in one aspect very much:

Merry actually died. No fake out deaths. So far.

Zoro lines are so great. Luffy is very likeable, Inaki is doing a great job.

Show was below average (within my expectation).
My friend who started reading One Piece recently didn't like it either (so it's not just me). I wonder if it can attract new fans, let's see.

What I did not like about the show: No Jango, No Okta, No fist of love and the changes to Captain Morgan, he didn't appear to be as much of a tyrant as in the manga and anime. So we only get evil marines at the beginning and only later in the season get to know that there are good marines like Nami's adoptive mother, Garp and eventually Korby.
What I liked: Within the confines of the show most changes made sense. Why Mihawk was at Baratie was explained well.
What I loved: Fight Zoro-Mihawk was almost a 1 to 1 Frame-to-frame copy from the Anime. Buggy. Actually almost all actors portray the characters extremly well. The scene where Nezumi takes namis gold was as uncomfortable as it was in the Manga or Anime.
