I didn't find any Shanks thread in the tree of knowledge, just found a dead link in the index so I will post it here. I also don't know if some1 said sth similar.. well anyway:

I believe, Ace is not blood related to Luffy due to their different names. We have Monkey D Garp, Dragon and Luffy. Portgas D Ace must come from a different family line. Since Shanks seemed to care about Ace and they also share a similar face, I believe Shanks full name is Portgas D Shanks. Which would also explain, why he was in Luffys and Aces home town. He could be his father or is older brother, which I personally tend to.

Well, just a theory, what do u guys think about it?

Nice theory blackhair it could hold up as well....people don't have to be blood related to be referred to as a brother, Shanks might have asked him to look after Luffy or something, but theres only one thing going against you here blackhair, didn't Garp say at one point that he taught them both, and then coninued on to discredit Shanks, I doubt Garp would teach the son of a pirate he (seems) to dislike, but who knows ahahah

Hehe, I said this a while ago but it wasn't really all that serious, just as an example of true epicness. It's not impossible, you know.. But like all these kinda theorys it just seems too epic to be true. Personally I don't really think they're related at all. While Shanks may be a bit concerned about Ace, the reason he wanted to stop WB was to stall the "new era" that's dawning. It wouldn't surprise me if it turned out they're family though, very Oda-ish and awesome.

has anyone talked about age yet? shanks is 37, ace is 20. not that it's impossible, but shanks would have been father at the age of 17 which imo is very young in OP as well.
I'm not saying it's utterly impossible since shanks was just about to start his career as captain of his own crew back then. and after the execution of Gol in Loguetown he might even have dwelled in East Blue for some time.

I just wonder what that would add to the story, because if it were true shanks should not sit on a pile of gold in the new world but take action too.

btw checking some manga chapter I found this : doesn't their eyes looks evil xD

While researching some stuff I found this on a German op fan wiki page. Apparently, that guy is a character by Oda who plays a major role in the 4 movie. He is called General but within the marine there doesn't exist such a rank. However a General of the navy is equal to a Admiral of the marine. But in the movie he plays a former Marine, so..

Can some1 confirm this? is he rly a character by Oda? I watched the movie and he was beaten by Luffy without Gear. I highly doubt that such a guy would be a Admiral. But normally Movie=Filler. They dont contribute to the story, still if he was drawn by Oda.. idk xD

he's General Gaspade, he's not an Admiral though seeing his power level (he's not over 9000 XD) he may be the same rank as Smoker or one lower
i think he's a character drawn by Oda failed atempt, because somewhere i saw some sketches of him...

sure they look evil, if luffy wants to be the pirate king, he'll have to learn making that evil face too, but he has the family link with garp, so he will know how to do it XD

Remember that it is expected in series to "special" characters have the same formula to character design... them it's normal to see similarities between recurring characters.

I have a theory about this whole balance thing between Shi, WG and Younkou.
The way I understood "balance" when it wasmentioned by Garp is that Shi and WB combined offset Younkou combined but with a slight advantage to the WG. After all the WG is composed of two hundred or three hundred some countries ( can't think exactly of the number) living peacefully under the WG. The WG and marines might be corrupt but their moto is Justice. This balance is a balance from letting big things happen, and assume world domination from either parties. But even if WG has an slight advantage over the Younkou, they would never go head to head with them, because they would loose a lot of their resources too, and then rookies and small pirates will go mad in the seas and cause a rampage, and we must not forget the primary role of the marines and WG is to keep countries safe.
The capture of Ace is the perfect scenario to corner WB, because in a sense it's not the WG who attached WB, but they're just doing their jobs capturing pirates. Now, Shanks might be a good Yonkou, and might offer to help even if I suspect WB would allow him, but we don't know anything about the other Yonkou, they might be a little cocky and see this whole thing as an opportunity to expand their territories and forget about this whole balance thing, I even think that some of them don't care about it since they know they can survive.
I don't think the WG is stupid, I'm sure they calculated their ods and feel comfortable about beating WB and keep as strong as they are, I mean they can always retreat and free Ace if they sense that they will be defeated.
I believe like a lot of you that this balance is ultimately going to be broken since they are some factors not calculated. The most dangerous one is Dragon and his army. we all heard that they're eating islands and countries like nothing, Dragon and pirates have a common enemy but that does not mean they won't go head to head if needed. The second factor is rookies, they also might cause some drama if they defeat one of the admirals or one of the Yonkou. And last but not least the SHI themselves can cause trouble, Moria, BB and Doflamingo have clearly stated that they want to be the next pirate king, so they will turn their back on the WG eventually.

Forgetting about all that, I have a question that might have been discussed before. The elders of the WG look tough too, with one of them holding a sword in his hand. don't you think that they will end up fighting at some point and show their powers?

Some have speculated that it stands for Dreams. Others say it is Destiny.

I dunno, it'd be pretty cheesy if that was the case.

I remember one episode of the Simpsons, where Homer searched for the true meaning of his middle initial. He didn't know what the J. in Homer J. Simpson meant. As he found out it was one of the most remarkable scenes imo: J. = Jay ...

thus I don't expect it to mean anything, though I could imagine it's something like 'god' or a worshipped elder person. as in "does god know" or "the will of god" (I think I watched too much US election footage )

I think the "D" has sth to do with the lost kingdom. Maybe ppl who are holding a D in their name are descendants of that folk. And I believe within the D family there are many clans like the Monkey clan, Portgas clan, Gol clan etc. These clans are not blood related to each other, since we saw a Giant (Hagwall D Saulo) and I highly doubt he could reproduce with a human. As descendants of that folk they have a mission to full fill, "the will of D". What kind of mission is written in the ponoglyphs.

The D could be the first letter of the Lost-Kingdoms name.

hmm, It might D. is the descendant of the Lost Kingdom, possibly the Noble of that? There's a possibility although very little they are blood related. Like Chimney human whose mermaid grandmother or Big Pan who's half-giant & half-merman

I taught about that for a moment, that the Gorosei are just leaders with no fighting skills. But most of them have scars which suggests that they fought or have been fighting. Also how can they get the marines to obey them without riots. I mean seriously knowing the power the marines, has it will be easy to overthrow those elders. Sengoku is always worried when he needs to report bad news to them.

Speaking about gorosei, there's one with a bald head with a katana. It's cross-guard kinda look-like to Zoro's Sandai Kitetsu. Remember the word of Ippon Matsu, the seller who give the sword to Zoro that no owner of the sword have survived the sword's curse to that day may give another idea, but given his position & influence make me think that he's a real deal. Because Zoro has been survive so far, so he might do so. That also rise another question, will Zoro face him in the future?
