Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

He wasn't written as anything except for extremely powerful. He wasn't hurt in the War, and he was able to go toe-to-toe with a future Emperor. There's no indication to which tier he belongs to, but as a swordsman who gets challenges, he's likely at a high tier.
Based on the dialogue "I want to see how far I am from that man", we can deduce that his attempt at Whitebeard was serious. Since he was stopped rather effortlessly by Jozu, we can deduce that he is indeed far away from the likes of the Yonko.

Afterwards he arguably half assed the entire war.

Mihawk seems to be both bored and lazy. We know from the Vivre card that he became the strongest swordsman by taking on any challenge presented to him, and after there was no one left he was declared the strongest swordsman in the World.

Afterwards he started chilling in Paradise, and doing weird stuff for a Shishibukai such as actively hunting Pirates. But it's weird how he was toying with the Krieg Pirates, instead of wiping them out completely in the Grand Line, he only wrecked them up, then chased them slowly all the way to East Blue like a stalker. Sounds like a really bored man.

However he is also lazy. He avoids finishing his challenge with Shanks and after being stopped by Jozu just once, he didn't even bother to try again. Seems whenever a challenge is too difficult, he gives up on it.

Mihawk's entire character is a huge contrast to Zoro. At first Zoro was like him, he was just seeking the challenge. Remember him ridiculing Kabahji by injuring himself? Well when Zoro got his challenge and got defeated by Mihawk, he changed. Instead of seeking challenges, he started putting himself behind Luffy, but also continuous training.

I wonder what the story has in store for Mihawk. He seems entertained by the new challenge, but gardening with Perona or hunting random crap pirates in Paradise shouldn't have had a positive effect on his fighting skills.

The big problem with Mihawk is how separated he is from any other character in the plot, and that he is basically no longer an antagonist in any fashion.

I am really curious on how Oda will weave him into the story.

High tier yes, emperor tier no. I'd say high YC level.

That's super wrong. Good swordsmen don't cut what they don't intend to cut. Mihawk aiming at Whitebeard who is made of flesh is different from if he tried to cut Jozu who is made of freaking diamond.

Then why didn't he swoop whoosh Jozu away and tried again?

His intent was clear, why did he stop?

The entire scene implies Mihawk can not cut Jozu, why stretch it I do not see the reason.

Because Mihawk got the answer for the question he had. Jozu toking on the slash instead WB confirmed his suspicions about WB's power being reduced.
That scene doesnt imply that Mihawk cant cut Jozu since the same scene occurred with Mr1 and was proven wrong in next sword swing.

Same reason why Aokiji and Kizaru didnt do follow up attacks, the 3 commanders blocked them and they didnt attack again, they let the war play out.

Then does Mihawk's air slash that failed to cut Daz Bones imply he cant cut steel?

Powerful, he is. Though Yonko or Admiral lvl he isn't. He was in same arc with them and he wasn't taken as bigger threat or even equal as them in portrayal. Facing Pre-Yonko Shanks means nothing if Shanks wasn't in same power as Yonko Shanks is. I respect he is strong, but he isn't at Yonko or Admiral lvl how portrayal shows.

Prime Zeff? Depends how you want go about it as he didn't stop his journey and choose to give up his dream for Sanji, so he could have been major threat if he continue to NW and back.

We don't know and I don't disagree. What I was trying to get at is if he's already high tier strong and has been this whole time...then that really isn't interesting nor is it good storytelling. One Piece is about the journey of the Strawhats as they grow stronger and closer to their dreams.

Zoro already being near or above YC1, to me, is kind of like if Luffy allowed Rayleigh to tell him whether or not One Piece exists. The adventure is basically freaking done at that point. And, like Luffy said, that's a boring adventure, not seeing him progress or grow to achieve his dream. He'd basically just be cruising until he reaches Mihawk and be like "Welp, I've already been on the level this whole time, but just wasted time until we could cross paths again to fight it out. BTW, GG I win."
the post was directed at your last sentence, as I think even if Zoro gets at that strength, Mihawk might still be extremely challenging, if not superior. Same with opponents Zoro comes across, as I don't see Zoro being such a high-tiered fighter yet. I mean, they still also have the admirals to fight, as well as at least one more Emperor, who are likely going to be challenges.

Jozu was able to stop Mihawk with his diamond fruit, no? Whitebeard was also considered the strongest man in the world, so there's also that to consider. He still didn't really fight Whitebeard, but he had no problem keeping up with other fighters.

But it's not like we get constant focus on Mihawk. What if he trains, but we don't see it because he's not a main character? I mean, it's not like we see him every ten or twenty chapters doing things.

I've never seen him as an antagonist though, just a hurdle and an end-goal. Unless that does count as being an antagonist.

Hard to tell. He's implied to have been to the New World, but there's nothing much else to go on beyond that.

I'll take this bet because we've already been shown the entirety of the Roger Pirates.

The ones that went to Laugh Tale appeared in Oden's flashback, and all were given names in SBS

Zeff was a great pirate from Krieg's perspective, but he's not a big shot in the Grand Line. Also they showed off Sanji's bounty of 77 million in Baratie, implying it must be much higher than Zeff's was. I'm guessing it was something like 30 million.

I think Zeff was apart of even greater. What if he was from Rocks Pirate Crew as that crew had a lot big names on there and make sense maybe.

Nothing special even in the first half of the Grand Line.
Not even capable of using Haki. That says enough about Zeff.

Well we never seen him in full fight and plus being older make you less capable then you are in your Prime, so no proof on that.

Even that weakling that beat Sanji was even able to manhandle him, Zeff was just a nobody who ran away from paradise.

Eh, figured someone would say the flashback. That's still not enough unless Oda says he listed everyone that's been on the crew ever or that no one new joined after that.

Probably because it's been too long, and Zeff's either been out of the limelight for a long time or was like Blackbeard, unnoticeable?
