Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

After watching the new OP episode I have to wonder what would have happened had the SHs gone to Winner Island instead of Law. Like was BB really just gambling or did he underestimate Luffy that much. I'm thinking in a matchup of BB, Jesus, & Van Agur vs post Wano SHs the decided winner would be the SHs?

I don't know if Luffy by himself could have finished BB but if push came to shove and it was winner take all I could see him growing in battle to pull of a high diff win. However, I also have to think he wouldn't necessarily be alone since Zoro could also tag team in that fight, not to mention the rest of the SH crew. I'd think Jinbei and Sanji would be enough to solo Jesus & Van Agur.

To me definitely seems that BB was underestimating the SHs real big in this case to potentially run into them without his full crew.

Since Luffy bounty is the same as Law and Kid, I think the rest of the world believes defeating Kaido was a team effort.

But yeah, Blackbeard didn't knew who he would intercept out of Wano. He was gambling, but if he wants to be Pirate King, he has to take risks.

Definitely possible though unlike Law/Kid, the SHs ended up becoming Yonko so BB must have known they did more than the other two crews. I personally think Teach was being arrogant here vs being a risk taker. WB did say that his biggest weakness was his arrogance and it is what almost got him killed back then too.

His arrogance will ultimately be his downfall

Like with Law, Blackbeard probably thought that just getting the jump on the crew would've been enough. Even Auger chided him for not having a plan beyond that. Not only that, but the information he had seemed to be outdated as he wasn't even aware that Law had Awakened his fruit.

So yeah, it likely wouldn't have been a good time for Blackbeard, though I'd also say the Strawhats would've have made it out unscathed either. Fate spared both Blackbeard and Luffy from confronting one another too early.

Law has a submarine. I forget.. how did Blackbeard even find him?

It'll be interesting to see Nika vs Darkness. Luffy being rubber, you'd think he'd be somewhat immune to earthquakes.

I am pretty sure Nika fruit full power will be related to heat. We had hints already with red hawk and red rock.

I think heat is a byproduct of it, but I think it has more to do with the "eternal source of fire/power" that Vegapunk mentioned about the Ancient Kingdom's technology. So far he's only been able to imitate it with the Mother Flame (if I read all of that right), but imo signs kinda point toward the power of "sun god Nika" being in some way related to this "eternal source of fire/power".

The power scaling is really weird sometimes in One Piece. In Whole cake island arc., Luffy could barely destroy cracker soldiers. It took strong punches from G4 to do so, while now we can see that van aguar one shot them easily like nothing.
So is Oda trying to tell us Van Aguar > G4 luffy ?

On one hand, anime feats should usually be taken at face value.

On the other hand, we're arcs removed from WCI and many characters have had explosive growth since then and it's quite possible that Van Auger has lapped WCI Luffy in terms of haki proficiency.

It's also a common trope that once an enemy is defeated in a series, they become weaker. Cracker being defeated by Luffy could have triggered him to start degrading in strength. We've seen this before directly with Katakuri being unable to catch Caesar and the Germa siblings. We've also indirectly witnessed it with Moriah who matched Kaido at one point but was a joke by the time Marineford rolled around.

Only enemy I can think of that we've seen get noticeably stronger is Lucci.

First, it's non-canon. In the manga, we never see Van Augur fight cracker. But in this instance, we can say that Aokiji's fruit made the biscuit soldiers weaker (since water softens it).

In the fight against Law, we see that Van Augur couldn't even pierce through Jean Bart. So his attack power shouldn't be the same as G4.

Well the Augur & Aokiji vs Cracker was a cover story so we know they did clash but none of the specifics were shown aside from people being frozen over. Could have been the case Aokiji did all the work but its plausible that Auger can also shoot the biscuit clones. To me it's completely believable that he is able to take down the biscuit soldiers since he is one of the OG BB captains. I also think for fighters that mainly use guns they have to be good at imbuing haki to bypass strong defenses similar to how swordsmen still have to be able to cut opponents that use haki.

Yeah but we don't know if the biscuit soldiers were shot through. So cannot say Van Augur can do something when it's not shown.

It's also plausible that he didn't. Especially, since I provided an example of how he couldn't break through Jean Barts guard (unless his guard his stronger than Cracker's CoA infused biscuits).

It's fine if you find the OG BB captains to be strong but there are no evidences for it.

It'll be interesting in what way he loses to Luffy. I'd hate to see it be the typical villain underestimates enemy trope that OP has consistently had in every arc. BB arrogance taking him down makes sense but would love it if it were done differently so he could stand out as a villain. Personally after all those talks about fate and both his and Luffy's belief in it, would be poetic if the victory is the result of something neither of them saw coming.

Like with Law, Blackbeard probably thought that just getting the jump on the crew would've been enough. Even Auger chided him for not having a plan beyond that. Not only that, but the information he had seemed to be outdated as he wasn't even aware that Law had Awakened his fruit.

Haha that's true. He did seem to struggle with Law more than he expected. Also seems he didn't have full info on his abilities themselves and not just awakened powers.

I think fate spared BB more than Luffy. I just don't see how BB would have gotten out of it with a victory when he was so outnumbered. Especially against the SH crew where all the top commanders (Zoro, Sanji, Jinbei) are non DF users making his Yami Yami advantage all the less important.

Very good point on the Jean Bart defense part. I don't think he's anywhere near Crackers level. It probably is just filler bs.

As for OG BB, I do think the ones with combat roles are going to end up being his top commanders i.e. Jesus & Auger in particular. The Doc & Lafitte I think will be more support.

Guys who do you think stronger, Jack or Whos Who?

With Nekomamushi fought number 4 of Big Mom Pirates, would you think that Inuarashi was actually against number 4 of Beast Pirates?

I would think that jack's position is pretty representative of his strength level compared to the rest of kaido's crew at least. I don't think anything we saw in story suggests whose whose could be stronger.

Portrayal and his role as an All Star points to Jack being stronger.

Jack did direct harm to the Minks on Zou and Perospero was responsible for Pedro's death. That's the sole reason their losses were juxtaposed. It doesn't mean Jack or Perospero were the 4th strongest members of their crew. At least, not in Jack's case. The argument could be made for Perospero and Compote after Snack was demoted.

Remember when Jack attacked the ship carrying Fujitora, Sengoku, and Tsuru and everyone lost their minds? 🤣😂
