Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

People is still arguing about Luffy not being stronger than Doflamingo? This is Oda's manga about growth. You think that Oda is going to leave a blemish like Luffy beating Doflamingo without being stronger than him?

Not to mention it was extremely obvious that once Luffy rolled out Gear 4, Doflamingo didn't even stand a chance. He just stood there and took beatings because he wasn't at the same level as Luffy.

current luffy is stronger than doffy.back then no.
he has beaten stronger opponents with less help which is cracker.
cracker is leagues stronger than doffy and he was able to outstall cracker with just nani's help. luffy is just getting stronger and stronger. thats all

Good. Luffy is now super Saiyan black! Why the hell his hair grow?????
Dont think it grew, I just think its like static, so its just standing...

I like what the spoiler indicated luffy is doing. And the speed omg.. i predicted luffyneeds speed to keep up with hatakuri.. So it speed with the snakey movement. So that way he kindacovers more surface areas(Cant explain what i'm imagining but ywah i'll wait for the chapter).
OK i will try, even if it means getting insulted by you again. *Sigh*
With my introductery sentence I tried to imply that I am no Sanji-fanboy. But you reacting as I initially predicted is pure gold.
True, vergo wasn't vice-captain. I thought I remembered him being second in command, which for me is equivalent to being a vice-captain, but it seems I am wrong. Thanks for noticing.
He was a vice admiral... top tier at that as well. If he had a good logia DF hed's be low admiral level and probably get recommended/drafted during timeskip... Anyways... Sanji has taken many Ls (I disagree with som i.e.Judge as he clearly walked away from the fight, something i'd expect luffy or zoro to do too).
Against Doffy he got beat hands down... but law even got beat byhim so obviously plot purpose....
Zoro fanboys should deep this: Law will beat zoro cos of Laws DF... and if doffycan beat law, why should sanji, someone weaker than zoro be able to beat doffy?? #commonsense

Dude, I will most probably be branded as a "sanji-fanboy', but whatever.
Vergo - the vice-captain of the donquixote family - broke his leg, after Sanji's body already suffered damage, while Nami (or chopper?) was in his body. Correct me if i'm wrong.
He didn't try to act cool, when confronting doffy. He tried to save his crewmates from being killed. All while fighting in the air, against a character, whose forte is fighting in the air.
Vergo was never vice captain of anything! FACT
Sanji's forte is fighting in the air as he said before

That nosebleed was pretty damn funny. And him almost dying from it was to introduce the importance of the blood-transfusion.
And maybe we have read a different manga, but his fight against Luffy wasn't out of disrespect. It was to protect his crew. He wanted to make them believe, that he disrespected them, so they would leave. But Luffy noticed it, that's just how strong of an understanding relationship they have. And in fact, he is trusting his crew right now. What's so wrong in not believing, that half of their crew wouldn't make it out of a yonkou's territory alive?
In fact, they would have died, hadn't all the circumstances played out in their favour. Something Sanji never could have expected.

I also agree that Sanji has somewhat fallen behind. But your reasoning is just meh. Sorry man.
The arc isn't over yet, and this arc is the perfect arc for Sanji to somehow progress.
I wouldn't brand Sanji as a lost case. Lets just wait for the arc to conclude, and then we can make serious statements about Sanji's role in the crew

Sanji is a knight in shining armour, a man even when he knows he will lose will always stand up for any woman, he is not a typical badass character created to win fights, that is Luffy and Zoro's job not Sanji, if Sanji decided to go take over the island the mirror is on he would lose but if it was Luffy or Zoro they would win, that is how Oda writes.

Sanji fan must accept Sanji is not a fighter of the crew but a chef, but like all of the crew he can handle himself that' all!

To me you just sound like another close minded Sanji fan who can' accept his character for what he truly is.

Sanji being a food air-fighter is a no-brainer, but doffy is just simply better suited for fighting in the air.
So you didn't manage to invalidate even one of my arguments. What I get is insults and ranting. All I hear is mimimi.
By countering your arguments(?), I wanted to point out, that if you want to make statements and give us references, they should somehow be true or understandable. No sanji-fanboyism included.
Now we should end here and better stick to the spoilers. This topic has nothing to do with the actual chapter

The only reason Doflamingo lost to Luffy is because he didn't fully understand or know how strong Luffy truly was. He also underestimated him mainly because of his alliance with Law. Rematch with Luffy and Doflamingo maybe a lot more interesting.

Notice Katakuri isn't holding back or looking down on Luffy in this fight. That's my opinion on that.

Can't underestimate an opponent after you've been hit by them. Joker may have underestimated Luffy prior to the fight, but during the fight? No.

You might be 6 foot tall for all i know, I might be 5 foot tall, you may look at me and underestimate my ability to fight, but by the time some 5 foot individual lands a blow that deals significant damage on the 6 foot tall individual, underestimating goes out the window. Joker even used awakened techniques on Luffy before Gear 4th.

How exactly did Joker underestimate Luffy? Katakuri hasn't fought against Luffy any differently to Joker.
  • They start off with their basic attacks, and when the situation isn't progressing, they take it up a notch and start using awakened techniques or stronger move-sets.
If Joker was fighting with 1 arm for the entirety of the fight because he originally deemed Luffy as inferior and didn't want to acknowledge Luffy despite the results, then yes, that's underestimating, but when you use all the attacks in your repertoire to take on an opponent, that's not underestimating by any means.

Sorry but Sanji's new world feats say otherwise.
Sanji has fallen way behind, both as a fighter and as a character:
-he had big trouble against vergo who cracked dat leg bone of his, hiis main weapon/mean of fighting cracked by vergo a donquijote family executive...
-He was humiliated by doffy when he tried to act cool and almost died
-he lost to Judge...and yes this is a loss he could have predicted the soldiers intervention with his observation haki wich he didnt cause it was too weak...

As a character he has become a sorry excuse of his pre skip persona, almost dying from a nosebleed, not trusting in his capitain and crew in the big mom arc, hitting his capitain and disrespecting him publicly, and now baking a cake to save the ennemy when the protagonists goal of saving him and his family was already fulfiled... seriously?

I think that this far in the story and considering all the afomentioned points Sanji's character is hardly reedeemable as a fighter/character and has long lost his charisma and badass attitude that we used to love him for.
Most of those who wanted sanji to fight katakuri and now snack are delusional and should just let go of the past and accept Sanji for what he has become and always aimed to be a cook.
See, the problem here is, while I'm arguing based on the manga, the logic of the genre, etc, You are arguing based on fanboy "dur, power tier level is now Luffy = Zoro > Jimbei....Sanji just cooks, so he's weakest now". Which is just not supported in the text at all. I don't post here often, but when I do, I make this point again and again - Oda is not writing your fan fiction. He isn't worrying about tiers. He isn't interested in fanboy "I like Zoro better because swords are cooler than legs!" arguments. He is writing a story about a group of friends traveling the ocean. And all those character things you dislike? Those were written by Oda! Because...he liked them for the story! So you being down on him is you being down on him. The writer is clearly in favor of him, hence the long arc focused on him right now! If you seriously think he is being pushed aside after this arc, i mean, that's just dumb.

First of all you should calm down getting all worked up over a work of fiction isnt getting you anywhere.

Second of all Oda sid himself that he had a soft spot for zoro tell me where in the manga was zoro ever humiliated by other characters or not looking badass in serious moments?
This is obviously not the case for sanji and even if you seem to be salty the facts are here he is not on the same level as the other fighters of the crew, and this is perfectly fine, his main job on the crew isnt even to fight. He can hold his own against moderately strong characters but he is not fighting commanders not even donjijote top executives.

Third where did I say that luffy=zoro? Do yourself a favor and dont respond to a post if you are just mad and not even reading the whole thing.

Now if you give me constructive arguments (of which I doubt you can) that goes your way other than calling me a fanboy and acting condescending I will gladly hear you.

Now break a leg

The thing is...i'm the one treating it like fiction. You aren't. You are treating it like a fanboy, wanting your guy to not only be stronger than Sanji (and I honestly don't care who is stronger, that's not even a top 10 reason i read any of these manga), but to be many times stronger because you like one character less. You use things like "humiliated" when the text doesn't support that. Some things are just done for comedy (nose bleeds). But if the manga author didn't like him, he wouldn't have this entire arc about his backstory.

If power levels are your thing, go watch Dragon Ball Super. You won't be disappointed, it's only about power levels. But if you are reading this expecting the rest of the series to have Sanji relegated to the kitchen...well, that's not going to happen. Nothing has really changed in terms of the crew and it's power. I mean, it wasn't long ago when Luffy trusted Sanji in the manga to attack one of Big Mom's ships by himself, and didn't worry at all that he would die/lose. If that doesn't say something to you, you are a lost cause, and again, just stick to Dragon Ball Super.

You completely miss the point, and you are trying to make me say things I didn't.

In my first post I was arguing that sanji could not beat a yonkou commander and stated his feats against way weaker opponents as evidence.

I maintain my stance on the "humiliation" part, doffy mocked sanji giving him sarcastic praise, dodginc/blocking his attacks with his hakiless feather coat, cutting him up and stopping him with no effort and almost slicing the guy in half like he was a cuisse de veau. Law saving his ass when he was already tired from fighting doffy+admiral fuji etc

I don't really care about zoro or his strenght I merly used him as an exemple.

However we are reading shonen, so power levels albeit not as prominent as in other works like dragon ball super (that you seem to enjoy) are always a thing.
It doesnt matter if you care about them they exist in shonen its a fact
Or perhaps you will deny that they exist in one piece?

Will you deny that a character like nami is not strong enough to take on katakuri by herlself? Or that sanji can not beat Kaido? Or zoro for that matter?
Those powerlevels mainly help us gauge the threat of certain chatacters (ex yonko kaido droping in front of kidd aliance) or the intensity of a battle (ex luffy vs katakuri)

It is a fact as well that sanji has fallen behind the other two "monster trio" as the fanbase like to call them. Wether you like it or not he is not as relevant fighting/strenght wise as he used to be while on the other hand Oda kept emphasizing his cooking skills like the attack cuisine the 99 recipes and more recently the cake.

You say that luffy trusted sanji to fight big mom's ship but he also trusted nami and co cause he believes in his friends, and can you honestly tell me that sanji could have done something had katakuri or cracker been on that ship or tried to jack the sunny? Dont be ridiculous

Dont get me wrong being a cook is his job and his dream, and focusing on cuisine instead of getting way stronger as luffy and zoro is not making him any less important to the crew or whatever or any less manly cool to his fans

Doflamingo mocked everyone. It's his character. Has nothing to do with any other characters strength. He was laughing at Luffy all throughout their fight...

I don't much care about your hypotheticals about what he could or could not have done to a captain in Big Mom's crew. In this story, it is very obvious that he and Zoro will be the level of those yonko commanders, so they (both) will beat them in the future. Anything else is just pointless speculation, and honestly, i mean this sincerly, you are going to look dumb either this arc, or the next, or the one after, when they are all beating people at that level. "he can't do it because I feel he was humiliated" is a dumb hill to die on, but I guess there isn't a point reasoning with you, you dislike the character, and that's that.

(also, I despise Dragon Ball Super, but I encourgae you and others obsessed with power levels to focus your attention on it. Powerups every chapter/anime episode! You can argue who can beat whom to your hearts content!)

tells me he doesnt care about hypothetical power levels, proceeds to talk about battles in the future and strenght if characters

Concerning everything else admit it you didn't even bother to read my post did you?
In that case we can both agree that this discussion is pointless you are turning a blind eye to my replies and insist on saying I hate the character when I clearly said I didnt and that I didnt care much about powerlevels other than the context they bring to the story

One last thing not sure if you noticed but you are complaining about power levels in the power levels thread if you are not interested why in the world are you here?

Doffy & Luffy were Equals!!!! think about a serious Luffy vs serious Doffy. G4 vs Awakened.....It's gonna be the same result. Luffy just needs to use king Kong Gun Sooner. Or last long enough to charge his haki back up...Doffy owned Law, even though Law did damage him, he reverted quite a bit of that damage by healing himself. So that's how I see it. Gear 4 Luffy slightly stronger than Doffy..

Then we see Luffy vs Cracker. Cracker's armament Haki was strong enough to cut Luffy's Gear 4 arm....However Gear 4 Luffy was still stronger, due to endurance, & strength. Cracker can summon biscuit warriors to fight who aren't weak what so ever. So fighting him 1 on 1 is difficult but his endurance is very low, Gear 2 Haki shots could have probably taken him out.

Luffy vs Katakuri, Best fight of One Piece imo...Luffy is dominated unable to land a clean strike, dodging like a crazy man, having his moves be outdone by very similar techniques just better. He takes a good beating; But manages to find his weakness, & starts to hand out some pain back to Katakuri & introduces his Gear 4, landing some big blows...Katakuri regains composure & beats up Boundman, Luffy runs out of haki & takes a tactical retreat.....After Luffy returns he's trying to compete with Katakuri, he's doing better but still no match. Luffy is CoO is improving but Katakuri keeps the lead, that's when Flampe screws luffy over, & receives a critical hit by the spear, & a beating to follow it. Katakuri wounds himself, they continue the fight with Luffy is doing a bit better & Katakuri is still pounding on him...Until we get the latest chapter of SnakeMan, where Luffy hits Katakuri's multiple times with his Jet culverin, & Luffy is hit with the most impressive Mochi slicer....

That being said, I'm really not mad at how Luffy is able to fight back, can potentially win, or how he's gotten stronger in this arc & fight alone...His Bounty was 550M with the event of him defeating Moriah 2 yrs ago omitted from his Pirate wrap sheet...So we can say Luffy is technically around 600M bounty range + he defeated a Sweet Commander already, who he was already stronger than, his ability was just hard to get around..The abuse Luffy's been taking isn't anything new nor was it too much...Not until he got hit wit that mochi thrust, I'm glad Oda made Katakuri hit himself too, because it would have been too far featched for Luffy to still win like that.......Gear 4 is insanely strong It automatically makes Luffy a Yonkou commander Lv, wich isn't crazy; If Uroge is out here taking out Big Mom's Sweet Commander. & now we Know Luffy has a few forms for Gear 4 for situational advantages which will help him overcome his adversities. so him possibly defeating a 1Bil Bounty isn't far fetch, & Oda did I good job with Luffy slowly approaching such a level

If even luffy wins I still think that katakuri is still stronger than him. Currently luffy I’d confirm to be stronger than DD now tho

Sanji didn't have big trouble against Vergo. A member explained this already, but I thought it was obvious that there was no clear winner, nor could one be determined. Anyone saying Sanji or Vergo would have won or won are pulling this out of their asses.

Doflamingo praised him multiple times, and Sanji almost died because Doflamingo tied him up. He did the same to Luffy, who only broke out because of Gear 4. Sanji does not have that kind of a powerup or ability. Not to mention, despite taking a fatal wound, Doflamingo was still more than a match for Luffy and Law, especially after taking multiple Gear 4 hits. Using Sanji's skirmish against Doflamingo as proof that he's not strong doesn't work when you look at it objectively. Doflamingo was probably the strongest or second strongest after Fujitora, maybe third after Sabo or fourth after Luffy.

If he even used Color of Observation. It's not always active.

Sanji didn't trust in his crew because he knows how powerful a Yonkou is. Look at how Luffy struggled against Cracker and is struggling immensely against Katakuri. Big Mom herself could likely solo the entire crew. And if I recall correctly, one reason why Sanji baked a cake was to get Big Mom off their backs. Plus, Sanji's not a heartless bastard.

Sanji fan must accept Sanji is not a fighter of the crew but a chef, but like all of the crew he can handle himself that' all!
Er, manga itself says Sanji is a fighter. Not only is he called part of the Monster Trio (instead of Duo), but he's usually in the front lines when the Straw Hats have to fight. Not sure how one can argue he's not one of the fighters of the crew, especially when we see him go head-to-head with opponents whereas Nami and Usopp use weapons and ranged attacks.

He is a fighter but currently the 4th strongest until proven otherwise

What are you getting at here? Of cause he is a fighter just like all members of the crew are fighter but unlike Luffy and Zoro he is not in the manga as just a fighter, he is a cook first and fighter second 895 chapters in this should be obvious!
Again Oda has never called them monster trio, it was just Nami calling them those monstrous trio don't let a statement like that cloud your judgement.

You have seriously misunderstood Sanji's character up to this point if you think he is a typical shonen badass character who only knows how to solve things by punching and kicking buddy!
What are you talking about even when you try to say Usopp and Nami use weapons, are you trying to say they aren't fighter cause let me inform you Zoro, Brook and Franky all use weapons are you trying to say they aren't fighter :_______:

The only person on the crew who is just there as a fighter and was recruited for his strength alone is Zoro, every other member was recruited for a role on the ship first and the bonus with them is that they can fight that's all.
Leave your Sanji love out of this to stop clouding your understanding of the story and it's characters buddy! ^-^

No he is a cook that can fight same goes for all the crew members, they have roles but can handle themselves in a fight, they are not there just because they can fight with exception for Zoro and Luffy who are in the story for their strength and comic relief

Er no, not all of the members are fighters. Zoro, Luffy, and Sanji are. Reread the manga, we see those three go to the front line all the time whereas the others usually cower or let the Monster Trio handle it. There's no order to it, he's a cook and a fighter. Prove me otherwise.

And Oda has actually backed up calling them Monster Trio. Again, reread the manga. It's not just ZOro and Luffy fighting all the time, Sanji's included in the mix as well. It's actually a waste of time debating with you when you refute what the manga has shown. And how the hell are Usopp and Nami fighters?

Now I know you don't have shit to argue with when you have to resort to calling others Sanji fanboys or claiming Sanji love. It's called being objective. Try it.

Nah, its still pretty debatable where he ranks, @Laxus pwns natsu, but he's most likely after Luffy and Zoro.

Yes it is debateable but jimbei has shown better feats and proven to be above sanji. I need facts and evidence to prove that sanji is stronger than jimbei

Every1 in the crew is a fighter I don’t get ur point if they can fight especially if they able to handle their own in 1v1
