Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

It doesnt change the fact that he was defeated in 1 hit. No matter how long it took for that hit to floor him.
Going by that logic, Luffy's fight against Hody Jones is also a dual loss because Luffy also went down from 1 bite...

Not every clash we have should end with a discussion of VICTORY and DEFEAT

The entire arguement of Zoro vs Hawkins was ridiculously based on such foolishness

And I would agree, but if you reread Fishman island it was only after he went all out to destroy Noah that he went beyond his limit and passed out. Hody Jones was also 100x stronger in the Steroid form and no longer a threat and Luffy continued to attack Noah before getting medical treatment.

The situation varies much differently

I disagree. Luffy's limit in New World is G4 which he didnt use against Noah and I am quite sure the reason why he went down and needed blood transfusion from Jinbe is because of the blood loss which caused Hody's bite. I think one of the characters even points out his loss of blood.

He was going to pass out whether or not Gyukimaru left unless Zoro personally addresses it later on.

This is not known and he never addresses this. He only said he was careless for sustaining this injury.

And he never passed out until after.

It's well known that characters like Zoro and co. are able to fight with grave injuries until they no longer need to fight which results in their passing out.

Luffy tends to fight even with grave injuries and only goes out of commission once he's secured victory.

Zoro himself acknowledged the seriousness of the wound,
Yes, he admitted it.

Not the same thing as saying he'd lose consciousness whether or not Gyukimaru left.

This is just something we know about characters like Zoro and Luffy.

he needed to be saved once he was down.
Who doesn't need to be saved when they're down? Even Katakuri and Luffy need to be saved once they're down.

You dont really have proof Zoro could have continued because there is no precedent of Zoro taking such a clean stab.
Okay, so what you said initially was that Zoro didn't win, that doesn't make sense at all. That's be taking leaps in logic to even try to justify that. He clearly won.

No precedent of Zoro fighting injured until he's secured victory? He didn't stop fighting Mr.1 despite multiple grievous injuries until victory was secured. Zoro's known for this, as is Luffy.

I'm not going to bash Zoro for his performance and I agree it was a cheap shot. It doesnt change the fact that he was defeated in 1 hit.
Defeat is when you opponent either gives up or loses the ability to fight back.

Kamazou lost the ability to fight back, therefore, Zoro won.

If Zoro was defeated by Kamazou, he'd have lost the ability to fight back, but he didn't.

Only thing Kamazou did was injure him because of Gyukimaru.

I shudder to imagine this forum if Sanji went down in 1 hit.
There's nothing to shudder about. It's only those who are not realistic that are the problem and look at things out of context for their own agendas.

Unless you can show me someone take an equally devastating stab and continue on? Whitebeard's the only 1 I can think of and Zoro is no Whitebeard.
No one is calling Zoro Whitebeard, that'd be absurd.

It still doesn't change the fact that Zoro won and was never defeated.

He did lose the ability to fight back. He passed out.

This was neither a victory or defeat for Zoro

Your right, I did say they lost. Bad wording on my part. I meant neither could claim victory

You're contradicting yourself here.

When Zoro is injured to the point that he's apparently haemorrhaging into unconsciousness or death, and still defeats his opponent, you call it a draw.

When Luffy is injured to the point he's haemorrhaging into unconsciousness or death, it's a completely different situation because he was punching Noah? Punching Noah doesn't change the fact he was bleeding. It's not punching that determined whether or not Luffy would lose consciousness or die. It's the bite he got from Hody that was making him bleed.

This is a double standard.

Wrong, your logic here is amusing.

He lost consciousness after Kamazou was defeated to the point he couldn't even get back up to fight.

If a fight is concluded by an attack, that person has lost by default.

his was neither a victory or defeat for Zoro
Then your logic here is atrociously poor. It's a victory.

An injured person knocks out their before passing out, it's called a victory.

By this absurd logic, Luffy never defeated Joker because he lost consciousness right after he defeated Joker.

Isnt your logic equally atrocious? Your basically implying that whose ever eyes are open the longest is the victor.

Both were downed in 1 hit. BOTH could not continue on.

Call it a victory if you must, I wont argue the semantics with you.

We are just going to have to disagree here.

By this standard, any one with a grave injury and is likely going to pass out or die from haemorrhaging cannot win no matter what they do to an opponent:
  1. Whitebeard puts away thousands of navy soldiers, puts VAs into unconsciousness, but because he passed out later from haemorrhaging or rather....died, he never won any fights at Marineford based on this logic.
  2. Luffy knocks out Crocodile into unconsciousness, but since he was bleeding and injured to the point he was going to lose consciousness, by this logic, he never defeated Crocodile.
  3. Luffy was injured and exhausted fighting Joker, but even though he knocked him out cold prior to losing consciousness himself, it's not a victory.
  4. By this logic, Zoro never won Mr.1 because he passed out or slumped over after Mr.1 despite knocking him out cold.

This is certainly a new standard. Injured fighters cannot claim victory regardless of what they do to another character. In 2019, we're now discriminating against gravely injured fighters.

Mine isn't atrocious, yours is because you're literally saying that once a character is gravely injured, they cannot be regarded as the victor of any fight, lol.

BOTH could not continue on.
Wrong.

Zoro wasn't downed after being hit, he continued fighting until he made sure Kamazo couldn't fight any longer. Huge difference.

Kamazo couldn't continue because he was knocked out unconscious, he had no choice to continue fighting even if he wanted. Zoro's blow was simply too powerful.

You're far from objective at this point.

Winning a fight doesn't mean you can't be injured.

The winner in a fight is the one who imposes his will.

It's also asinine that you'd even call this a draw when Zoro was injured by unfair means. Doesn't even need to be brought up, it's simply a fact that Zoro won.

The idea that an injured person cannot be regarded as a winner simply makes 0 sense.

Your over reacting here. I'm not discriminating against anyone, shame on you.

This "fight" was not at the caliber of any of the above fights you mentioned. Zoro was left unable to continue fighting after 1 hit (due to his own recklessness)

If it is your opinion that Zoro wouldn't have passed out if he precieved no threats than of course your going to consider him Victorious. I am making no such claim. Both were left unable to continue, it was a tie.

If Zoro staying awake seconds longer is a victory than so be it. In the longer run, this fight is going to have nothing to do with Zoro's stroy as a whole.

Lol, it seems you missed out on the humour.

Winning a fight has nothing to do with calibre. It's not a criteria.

Winning is a conclusion, that's all.

Nope, you're wrong.

It has nothing to do with passing out. That only has relevance with what he'd have done against Gyukimaru.

Point is Zoro is standing and Kamazo is downed. He won, it's not a tie.

To call this a tie is simply to be in denial.

Your argument here is an injured person cannot be regarded as a winner of a fight. That argument is just a bad one that should be rejected and repudiated on its face because the logic is farcical and comical.

It has nothing to do with Zoro staying awake.

The only relevant thing is did Zoro knock out Kamazo before he dropped? Yes he did, so he won.

His staying awake only concerns what would have happened if Gyukimaru decided to fight.

By your ridiculous logic and rationale, Luffy didn't defeat Joker or Crocodile even though the Manga said he did and common sense says he did. You've never said otherwise until now when it suits you to make out that Zoro didn't win only because Sanji is apparently concerned here. You're distorting and warping logic just to come to an absurd conclusion, simply a fact.

That's not may arguement nor is it my intention. If you cannot understand what I am saying at this point then I have failed to make my point clear enough for you.

That's on me. Your getting snippy and borderline rude. Let's end the discussion here.

It is essentially your argument.

You're saying unless Zoro never lost consciousness, he can't be regarded as the winner.

The thing is that is absurd.

The winner of a fight isn't determined by what one does after they've defeated the opponent.

The winner of a fight is concluded the moment the other fighter cannot fight back.

Whether the winner decides to sleep or loses consciousness after doesn't make them any less the winner. Winning isn't a state, it's not a condition, it's something that happens the moment the criteria for meeting is met, not something that is happening or continually met.

Once your opponent cannot fight back anymore whether by choice or by the will of the other, they've lost and the other person is the winner.

Kamazo couldn't fight back because Zoro forcefully imposed his will and won, Kamazo's therefore the loser.

For you to imply that Zoro must stay conscious in order to be regarded as the winner is more or less to say that if a fighter is going to lose consciousness because they're injured, even if they defeat an opponent before imminently passing out, they can't be regarded as the winner.

Like I said, such logic is inherently broken:
  1. It means Luffy never defeated Crocodile.
  2. It means Luffy never defeated Joker.
  3. It means Luffy never defeated Hody.
  4. It means Luffy never defeated Katakuri.
  5. It means Zoro never defeated Mr.1.
  6. It means Hajrudin never defeated Machvise.
  7. It means Law never defeated Trebol because he'd probably have bled out and lost consciousness had he not gotten medical treatment in time.
The implications of this new rule you're conjuring makes 0 sense.

That's on me. Your getting snippy and borderline rude. Let's end the discussion here.
Sure, we can end it.

See, but what if the Manslayer just passed out like Zoro did?

Wheres the proof Zoro defeated him? How is this Zoro's win if we dont know the full story? It looks like both lost to me. The manslayer beat Zoro, no more than Zoro beat the Manslayer.

I dont need to be spoon feed an image of Sanji standing over P1 body to know he defeated him any more than I need to be soon feed an image of Zoro in his fight.

How is this counted as a victory for Zoro? I'm not seeing it.
Manslayer is down and out, Zoro was still standing. The Straw Hats also have a history of going down only when threats are neutralized, and Zoro despite taking on Luffy's pain and exhaustion was still standing conscious when Sanji found him. Hell, even Usopp has taken beatings and still fought back, like against the mole lady on Alabasta or in Dressrosa. I mean, if Zoro would have gone down regardless of Manslayer staying down or Gyukimaru willing to finish the fight, then I'd concede to your point.

There is something that I always enjoyed a lot in past Naruto databooks where they would show each character ability in a spider web diagram.
It helped scale the characters strenght and gave a basis for discussions and hypothesis.

That is something that I find is lacking in One piece.

As Hannibal said, scaling characters power level is hard in One piece, even titles like vice admiral dont mean much anymore as it is a wide category going from Maynard to Garp...

Scaling with Luffy's fights could have been somewhat acurate if it wasn't for inconsistencies like Crocodile (seriously marineford Crocoboy has nothing to do with alabasta one) and the fight that it doesnt consider the matchup variable into the equation.

Luffy because of his fighting style can have an easy time against X but a hard time against Y, but it doesnt automatically mean that Y>X.

Haki is another variable that is getting more and more relevant with time. A certain character (ex Kaido) may be physically stronger than another (ex Shanks) but due to haki they are on par.
Haki is also a problem because we arent fully aware of how it works and its limitations (just like sea stone)

Now as we are getting closer to the end of the manga and because of shonen logic it will be harder and harder to guess characters strenght and PL imo.
For ex if as the moeites claim, Sanji beats King or queen this arc 1v1, then when he faces another commander we will be confused as to how they compare to king and it will mess up the "equivalence in strenght of the yonko crews" theory.
Naruto wasn't really that reliable, especially when you had someone unimpressive like Naruto being able to beat superior ninjas like Neji and even Gaara. It's even more unreliable in OP, where you have more variables that come into play here, like devil fruit, haki, mastery of haki, mastery of devil fruit, and even willpower. The whole douriki level seemed to be a one-time thing to boot, so it's hard to take that seriously at all either.
Is Sanji more impressive than Zoro in this current arc...Thats highly opinionated, whoever you choose, good for you. They boyh dont have much to measure.
honestly, not really
Going by that logic, Luffy's fight against Hody Jones is also a dual loss because Luffy also went down from 1 bite...
That logic comparison makes no sense....

This entire arguement was my bad. I simply failed to clarify my position and it kind of spiraled without me correcting myself.

HP is far more detailed in getting his point across and I just wasnt willing to do the same on my part

So did you correct yourself in any of the post? I don't want to read walls of text for no reason, and I have no idea if you still disagree that Zoro won.

I simply think it was a draw. Nothing more. Nothing less. My position hasn't changed since the chapter came out. I do think it was a cheapshot that did Zoro in regardless.

I disagree with those saying that the only reason Zoro passed out was because he no longer perceived a threat from the Benkei dude, there is just no evidence of this. The guy grinned (either in admiration of Zoro's skill or knew Zoro would pass out)turned and the next Panel Zoro paused, his stomach growled, and he was out. I would like proof that Zoro passed out by choice because he no longer perceived a threat. This simply was not like the other times when he's passed out (end of an arc where there was a clear path of victory for the Strawhats.) He was by himself, in foreign territory without any allies around, having just faced 2 enemies. I do not for 1 second believe he thought he was free of all threats.

Zoro acknowledged the wound was his own fault. That sort of implies that if he simply remained more focused it wouldn't have happened... He was being careless. In the end, both were incapacitated by the other. Both received a single wound that caused them to no longer be able to carry on the duel.

I'm not a fan of people using this fight to bash Zoro nor am I a fan of those who say this chapter should be entirely ignored.

Rereading my posts with HP I simply lost track of my point and didnt correct myself.

On my part, I just dont care enough to carry on the discussion at this point as whatever happens, this wont even register on Zoro's character by the end of the manga.

Why Oda even felt the need to have Zoro pass out, when he's endured seemingly worse is lost on me.

Oh well

We have to learn to let go. For real guys, after walls of misunderstanding, disagreeing, indifference. Or back And forth semantics. Just let it go.

There's two perspectives. 1 is a very critical one, while the other is simply the spoon fed context.

Luffy also fainted after defeating Crocodile & Lucci. So did he lose or win those fights? It's the same thing with Zoro.

Zoro won, but due to a lucky injury, he very oddly passed out before he could finish his 1st fight. If ppl think he lost, lol hey w/e. If that's what you count as a lost, that's your deal.

There is something that I always enjoyed a lot in past Naruto databooks where they would show each character ability in a spider web diagram.
These diagrams are fun, but I think it's hard for the author to keep up when there are too many characters. And it's even worse in Naruto, because apparently the sum of the values means something.

At least one of the databooks has it for some of the Strawhats...

@Lexusflame It doesnt matter if Benkei was a threat anymore or not and Zoro knows he wasnt because he sees him turning his back and leaving and then passing out, at that point Kamazou is already a dead man since few panels. It is clearly a Zoro victory.

This is certainly a new moment from you. Luffy suddenly didnt win his fights but there were double losses in fight Luffy vs Hody, Luffy vs Moriah, Luffy vs Lucci, Luffy vs Doflamingo, Luffy vs Krieg and I bet there is more if I look into it. Luffy was either unconscious, helpless or needed saving at the end of those fights.
