Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

People who use the excuse that "Shanks isn't as proficient with the sword as Mihawk is but in terms of overall strength he still overpowers Mihawk..."

Do you really think that a duel between two swordsmen comes down to simply comparing who is more skillful as a swordsman?

That's just silly. Physical strength, speed and haki are all part of what makes you the greatest swordsman in the world.

Shanks has NEVER been shown fighting. Besides clashing blades with WB.

That's very ignorant to say he doesnt use H2B combat. Of course Shanks a Yonkou uses H2H combat and is strong asf just like the rest of the top tier characters.
Clash with WB — uses a sword. Stopping Akainu — uses a sword. As an apprentice on Oro Jackson — uses a sword.

But no when it comes to an actual battle he will put his sword aside and fight with his one hand and two legs instead.

What is more dangerous I wonder... A sword or a bare hand... Hmmm.

Yes. I expect Shanks to sheath his sword theb proceed to punch and kick his opponent. I watched WB do it.

You mention Shanks using a sword. Thanks for the information everyone already know. If you talking in absolutes, idk how to help you. The world is full of variations.

A sword is a tool so is a gun. If you aren't a world class swordsman you arent cutting the flesh of Luffy. So yes Luffy's fist is most dangerous than majority of the swords in One Piece. LOL

Sorry to write a lol, not trying to bait or incite. But many arguments here are folly, and weak. Yonkou at the top 4...Mihawk isn't a yonkou & he isn't BB or Luffy. So how is he Yonkou lv?? He has a fancy title WSS....

Not Worlds strongest....Its Strongest SWORDSMAN...There are obviously ppl stronger than this Swordsman, some of them have swordsmanship also, they just happen to have much More than swordsmanship in their arsenal which overtakes the WSS.

Yes, that's the whole point of swordsmaship.

Regarding what Mihawk wanted to settle... When something needs to be settled, it means it isnt clearly decided.
Well, it just means Mihawk couldn't beat Shanks. At least you understand. :)

It's not like Shanks wanted to be the world's strongest swordsman. If he wanted that, he would've actively sought out other swordsmen too, but he didn't.

It was Mihawk who actively kept challenging Shanks, just the way he kept seeking out and challenging other swordsmen. Funny enough, he still couldn't beat Shanks even after trying so many times. So where exactly are people getting the information that Mihawk is stronger when they've not settled things, yet? Lol.

It's just like with Akainu. If Akainu wanted to be the pirate king, he would've achieved it within a year as Oda said. But he wasn't interested, so those who were interested went ahead and fought for it, just the way
Mihawk interested in being the WSS, and then became it. The fact they've still not settled things means it's premature to put Mihawk above Shanks.

This has to got to be at least the 4th-5th iteration of this thread/topic. I wish we could move on from such topics but I understand that newer members are interested in such topics.

A little heads up to everyone before creating any threads, a quick google search will let you know if there's any similar threads already. Just an idea...

How does Mihawk's strength compare to Shanks? Answered below.

How does his strength compare to Roger? Can't really answer that, all we know is Mihawk was already famous before the Great Pirate Age. Anything beyond this is just guessing based on

That's misleading, we dont know that one couldn't beat the other, we just know that they clashed numerous times and that their duels were famous around the world. Mihawk likely stopped seeking Shanks out for duel due to his pride as a swordsman; not wanting to fight a rival with a clear disadvantage to him. I stress that last bit because when we last saw them meet, it's clear that Shanks didn't seem bothered about fighting him with one arm.

Who is stronger of the two doesn't seem to matter to either characters now, their goals are different( or should I say were never the same). I don't think Shanks ever cared about being the strongest or best; I think if anything, he just wanted to fight someone strong. I personally though believe that had Mihawk had military influence and territory to protect/rule over as the other emperors do, he'd be considered as such. His path is one he follows alone, being a Shichibukai simply suited him in being able to move around freely and do what he wanted.

The strongest swordsman is a Pirate. & it's common knowledge of the manga that the Yonkou are the 4 strongest Pirates.
The relationship between 1 of these Yonkou & The pirate Warlord who holds the title strongest swordsman isn't suprsing. One still holds superiority over the other.
As I mentioned earlier, the term used in raws is similar to term describing politicians. It isnt about strength but power(influence).
Shanks has NEVER been shown fighting. Besides clashing blades with WB.

As a kid, he used swords. When he thought Ace wants to fight him, he grabbed his sword. When he clashed with WB, he used a sword. When he stopped Akainu, he used a sword. Whenever Shanks was supposed to fight, he used a sword. H2H combat is just an assumption.
Yes, that's the whole point of swordsmaship.
How do we evaluate sword skills in One Piece?

That also means that Shanks couldnt beat Mihawk too, not just the other way around.
Where we are getting the information that Mihawk is stronger than Shanks? From the fact that he no longer considers him a worthy challenge(while wishing for a swordsman to surpass his rival Shanks) without 2 arms and from the fact that he holds WSS title and not Shanks.

Even if the result between them in the past was not settled(unclear who is better), after losing his arm, Shanks is no longer on Mihawk's radar. The point that it was Mihawk who was the challenger doesnt matter, Zoro will be the challenger when he beats Mihawk, not the other way around, it means nothing.

Yeah, Akainu and every other top tier would become PK in a year if they were in MC shoes. Akainu never participated in PK race, Shanks participated in a fight for the WSS and didnt claim it, he didnt best the challenger. Your comparison is completely off here. It is not premature lol, they were equal when Shanks had 2 arms, which is what unsettled result means and without one arm Mihawk no longer considers him worthy.

By swordsmanship...

Edit: Its a skill... You display your skill, same way Mihawk wanted to see what Vistas style was about.

Then they could as well fight with bamboo swords as in kendo competitions if that was the case.

Different factors come into play and you know that very well from reading OP.

Sword grades matter, physical strength matters, haki matters.

Zoro even has (used to have?) a special strength enhancement technique.

Yes they could. If you have to rely on a stronger weapon to beat your opponent, but could not do it on an equal playing field, you are just relying on a crutch.

Hence why Kuina pawned Zoro regardless of his strength training etc.

Swordsmanship is based on skill. The most skilled swordsman will always win. I mean, Mihawk wrecked Zoro with a knife, a weapon significantly inferior to a katana.

You couldn't be more wrong about it.

Why on Earth would Mihawk wield a supreme grade sword and a black blade at that if it was all JUST about the skill.

Why would Zoro acquire Enma? And then be told that he could turn Enma black and upgrade the RANK of the sword?

Kuina told Zoro that as a male he will sooner or later surpass her because of natural difference in physical strength between men and women.

Zoro never stopped training physically.

How do we evaluate swordsmanship?
By swordplay skill... I.e. how good they are at using a sword... I mean, you measure a skill by how proficient someone is at that... Skill.

Mihawk literally demonstrated this. He beat Zoro, a swordsman with a knife. Showing the difference in skill...

If Zoro and Mihawk were at the same skill level, the latter would have to actually use his sword because you can't beat someone as skilled as you with an inefficient weapon.

If Mihawk wielded a bamboo stick while fighting Zoro at their first meetup, the result would have been the same.

Mihawk did to Zoro, what Kuina did to him. Showed him the gap in skill.

It's up to you if you really want to believe that... However it's just not true.

Haki and physical strength can be just as important as skills.

Swordsman duel is also a duel of haki and physical strength.

You can be very skillful but lose to someone whose physical stats and haki are above yours.

And it's not like I'm saying anything crazy to begin with. It's just common sense that a fight between two high level swordsmen is as much about haki and physical strength as it is about swordsmanship.

I don't really know why you'd want to oppose my statement. But again, it's up to you. Not gonna try to convince you.

Of course strength plays a part in being a great swordsman, skill alone will only get you so far. That's as true in the real world as it is in OP. Now as it's the case with the most proficient fighters we've seen, having a high level of haki can only be beneficial in this category.

Well, not that simple. The term used in raws is similar to the term used to describe politicians.
So, maybe it is not the strongest but most powerful as in most influential, commanding the biggest force, etc...
Good catch

There are as many pirates as there are stars...... And the ones along with "White Beard" (I'm not sure about the first sentence, but it just means there are many pirates)
He's one of the four great pirates, over the second half of the "Grand Line"
They reign just like "emperors"
Around the world they are called "Four Emperors"!!!

四人の大海賊 just mean four great pirates

I think the best question is why would the marines send anything less than an admiral to deal with Mihawk if he’s so powerful. Why would he be underestimated by Akainu of all people?
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Even if they didn’t have the room to get another high tier marine to deal with Mihawk I’m sure there’s others in the govt that exist. Sending low level marines to their deaths to save face just doesn’t add up.

Good point but we still do not know who the marines sent to capture Mihawk. But yeah if they didn't send an admiral or someone just as powerful to capture him, it would suck and raise many questions.
