Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

My personal hypothesis on how black blades are made is:

I'd say this works similarly to DF awakening. All things have WILL including inanimate objects like swords. When the WILL of a swordsman and the WILL of a sword align AND the swordsmen has the sufficient capability to handle the full power of the sword AND the sword is well built enough to handle the power of the swordsman it turns into a black blade. I'd go so far as to argue a black blade is one in which the WILL of the sword allows it to coat itself permanently in CoA haki.

Given what we learned in Wano about swords and their personalities, I can see Blackening basically being evidence that the Swordsman has completely subjected the sword/s to his will and they "become one" so to speak. The tried and true trope of a sword being an extension of a swordsman taken to an extreme.

The series History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi had a similar concept, where the highest level Swordsmen (weapon users in general really), would be able to "fuse" with their weapons and pull off crazy stunts. The resident weapon master on the protagonists side took it a step further and was able to basically get other weapons to vibe with her as well, lol.

@DeadlyBeast @HereNThere this was my take on it. Very similar

I think it has to do with the will of the blade since the old man that told Zoro about Enma revealed every single blade had a will of its own.

People like Shanks and Roger and Whitebeard are not focused solely on their blades. They had other focuses in life that exceeded that of the blade. That's my thoughts on the matter
I think you miss understood me. If a Blade will is to say... Cut Diamond and the swordsman gets strong enough to cut diamond, it becomes a black blade.

If a blade aspires to cut down a dragon, and the swordsman does it... it becomes a Black Blade.

If a blade wants to be acknowledge as the best its wielder has to defeat the greatest swordsman

Things like that, but it has to be "great" feats

I've never read/watched that series but it makes sense. I think the concept of weapons having their own will and requiring the user to "tame" them is a common trope too so definitely fits the bill.

@Pirate Queen I think you hit the nail on the head with the wills having to align. From old man Kozubaro's explanation I'd say that all blades have one single purpose in mind and that's to be the ultimate killing weapon by being able to cut whatever whenever. I think only true swordsmen focus purely on this aspect which is probably why people like Roger, WB, Shanks etc don't have black blades since they don't aim to be the best at cutting which is what a swordsmen is in a nutshell.

Oda could have at least put in a bit more effort where swordsmen are concerned because you have only Zoro who wants the title, out of hundreds of swordsmen. Then you have that the only reason Mihawk even has the title is because he went out and fought a bunch of swordsmen until there were no more elite swordsmen... only sike, Mihawk never fought Vista whose swordsmanship is arguably equal to his. And finally a lack of overall swordsmen for Zoro to even fight against and even going out of his way to have King reveal he is not a "Swordsman" despite having a sword when it would have cost Oda literally 0 dollars to just make King an elite swordsman for Zoro's sake

Wano should have been the time to reveal all that
Welp, consider all the people who haven't made black blades:

1.- WB
2.- Shanks(so far)
3.- Roger (pure swordsman)
4.- Oden (greatest samurai of his age)
5.- Kaido (strongest creature)

There's two black blades in the story, ryuma's blade which he colored and mihawk's blade though we don't have confirmation of who colored it. Ryuma has near deific status in wano, his legend has such weight that his sword being stolen broke the country's heart even in the middle of kaido's/orochi's takeover. With this in mind, turning a single blade black seems to be at least a yonko level feat. It is also worth noting that while some of the people in the list are in fact swordsman they are not necessarily as committed to the art as samurai would be hence why they might not produce a black blades. At the moment I honestly think zoro will end up producing a blade blade (or three?) when he finally defeats mihawk. Though if mihawk made his own blade black then perhaps it would be a fairly interesting development if zoro turns his blade black and then faces mihawk, having proven himself a swordsman of supreme skill himself. One that us readers would know to have surpassed oden.

I think this is also the main key to attaining a black blade. I believe it's proof that you've dedicated your life to the path of swordsmanship. Aside from the fact that they already have the highest possible grade of sword already, Roger, Whitebeard, and Shanks aren't about that particular way of life.

Blame whatever. I only read manga. In the manga, it showed WB > Akainu, not by much but still stronger.
Remember, people tend to forget these events. WB was old, had heart failure in battle, could not use HAKI at all, collapsed in the middle of battle of Akainu which Akainu then blasted a hole in his body, was stabbed in the abdomen by a man he trusted.
WB went thru a lot before defeating Akainu. Akainu got lucky the ground went under.
Manga or anime, the manga is accurate that WB > Akainu.

Kaido vs Mihawk is a joke. Kaido is not a swordsman therefore Mihawk cannot be stronger than him by title association. Nonetheless, Mihawk clashed with a YC (Vista), Kaido would have knocked Vista out right away.
Kaido > Mihawk.
Damn these Mihawk fans won't stop.
This is dog water logic.

Welp, WB's commanders, unlike the sweet commanders and calamities, were actually able to clash with admirals and not get defeated outright. The more the manga advances the more it looks like WB's commanders were higher in the pecking order than what kaido or big mom had.

People wanna argue pre time skip feats don't carry over to post time skip and that's just pathetic in my opinion. There was credence to the idea that the WBP's were just built different.

To me this is a bit of a relatively recent conclusion. I did use to think there was some parity between yonko's top 3 commanders. But the past 100 chapters just don't support that. Just the fact that big mom treated katakuri as his character deserves, lower than garbage, while treating marco with actual respect speaks volumes. Marco repelled and gave pause to kizaru... Jozu held out against aokiji until he got distracted (rookie mistake but still). Vista held his own against mihawk, who today is basically a yonko. Aramaki pretty much waltz into udon and owned everyone there. Which is fucking impressive even if kaido's lieuthenants weren't fully recovered. Aokiji waltz into WCI and froze everyone, including cracker and probably katakuri as well (unless he got knocked out by oven which is even sadder).

Overall it is worth noting that yonko crews likely were roughly equal in overall power but their power was probably spread differently. WB had many commanders who seem strong by the standards of what big mom and kaido had but he didn't have as numerous a crew as big mom or kaido. kaido's executives seemed relatively lackluster but he had 500 smile users and his total numbers added up to an impressive 30k. And perhaps also had the best weapon arsenal of any yonko. Big mom had more impressive executivesthan kaido (though kaido's calamities seemed more impressive than big mom's sweet commanders by a decent margin) and on top of that she had most of her children were skilled to some capacity and had an impressive array of fighters and rooks. While not being as top heavy as kaido's or wb's crew big mom just had a lot more fighters that were worth mentioning than anyone so far. Shank's power definitely seems to be top heavy while all of his commanders seem outstanding. At least compared to tobiropo (who seem really lackluster) and kaido's nameless headliners.

It was WB's top commanders that made me believe they were equal to or close to Admiral level. Thus believing the rest of the Yonko Commanders were gonna be close to Admiral level.
Not only that but Doffy not being afraid of fighting Fuji and even Aokiji.
Then Jack's crazy feat of fighting Fuji, Sengoku, and other VAs to rescue Doffy.

All in all, the YCs were hyped up to be close to Admiral level.
So it left a bad taste in my mouth when GB walked all over King and Queen. Oda didn't have to do that.

Regarding Mihawk's black blade versus other "Swordsman" regular blades.
This makes my point that Mihawk's title leans more towards sword skills while Shanks and the rest of the "swordsmen" lean toward overall power, kinda like King. All these powerful renown "Swordsman" even those with ACoA and ACoC, don't have a black blade. That doesn't make them weak. It just means they don't focus too much on sword skills. While Mihawk does.

Technically, WB's bisento is a bladed weapon and one of the 12 greatest swords/blades. But somehow we don't consider WB a swordsman.
Bet if he was considered a swordsman, Mihawk fans would rank him lower than Mihawk. LMAO. That's how desperate they are.

Hmmm, doflamingo seemed pretty afraid of fighting aokiji and fujitora. Looking back, odds are that aokiji refrained from further engaging doflamingo to avoid a war between Kaido and bb.

That boat had already sailed the moment Kaido one-shotted Luffy, then defeated all the Scabbards on his own.

How do y’all think Doflamingo would respect Luffy at this point if they cross paths?

Yes

He doesn't sound like the type to care about it, much like Crocodile

And I think he would suddenly get a massive increase in his powerlevel, much like Crocodile...

I think they have an understanding of sorts with each other now. Doflamingo knows Luffy is not a push over and is capable of wiping the floor with him with the strength he has gained so I don't think he will ever again treat Luffy like a kid. Aside from that I don't think he will show Luffy fear since he knows that's not the type of person Luffy is and I don't think Luffy will ever like Doflamingo since at the end of the day he is still evil.

I can agree that it was more of a Shanks hype moment than a Kid downplay moment since the attack even took out Killer. The Red Hair pirates are definitely looking very threatening in combat after that showing.

As for Law's performance against BB, it's hard to say for me. Just due to BBs characterization so far involving him getting hurt/hit it makes it more difficult to gauge how tough BB found the opponent. Personally I still think Law was low diff for BB and the injuries we see are superficial.
Yep, that's what I am saying. It's more of a pro Shanks moment. So let's not start using this to somehow disregard Kid's Wano feats or elevate Big Mom by association. Shanks simply hits on another level, that's all

I see what you mean. He is clumsy by nature. But that is part of his powerlevel then. Law ultimately ended up giving him a mid diff, which was pretty much what I'd think most of us expected. It is further suggestive that the Kid/Law vs Big Mom consistency is maintained.
A hypothetical Law vs Shanks on the other hand would end pretty much similar to how Kid ended, presuming Shanks gets serious from the getgo.

I'm good with this take. In fact the attack Shanks used is probably on the stronger side of his move set like Thunder Bagua (& variants) for Kaido. Any strong person without good defense (thinking Lunarian level) or aCoC taking that head on would meet same fate as Kid.
Yeah, I too think of this attack as the Shanks equivalent of thunder bagua or Ikoku. Just that the attack power involved here is quite higher.
I also think this attack one shots anyone without great haki or great defences (say Jozu or King)

That's fair. In that case to me Big Mom had very good base due to her monster body but after that I think when it comes to her combat skills she is lack luster compared to most top tiers. By that I mean she relies heavily on large AoE type attacks that look flashy but lack in their ability to finish particularly strong foes. Kid and Law are strong but we can clearly see they don't have that type of durability which is why they both lost more easily when taking more powerful attacks from Shanks & BB.

However my ranking is different then yours. I'd put Shanks >= Kaido > Big Mom.
We have pretty much the same take on Big Mom. Her relatively poor CQC/speed and attack power holds her down.

I have Kaido above Shanks until proven otherwise.
Kaido has repeatedly been called the strongest throughout the timeskip. And what it took to take him down is the most impressive gauntlet till date, and I doubt this gauntlet will ever be surpassed.

- WSC
- called world's strongest pirates post TS
- 1v1 always bet on Kaido
- most impressive gauntlet till date, while carrying an island across the sea
Dude has way too much hype, and the feats to back it up.

I have Kaido as the strongest character of the "mid gen".
Shanks has haki, CQC and attack power above Kaido though

Hm atmosphere sounds like a higher level logia power than wind would be so I like that idea. It would actually also explain how he has the ability to control the weather too. Honestly if he has this kind of power it would make him unstoppable in a sea battle since a controlled weather phenomena targeting opponents guarantees the sink.

As for who I think he'll flex on I'll say a large mass of WG forces led by Ciphor Pol & having some marine vice admirals of note too. Basically I see the WG making a move to take over an island (like what they were going to attempt with Wano) and the Revolutionaries interfering (I think Alabasta would be the perfect place for this to go down since the royal family is gone and it has symbolic significance to WG). As the WG ships arrive in mass there will be a single Revo ship in front of them before they can get to land. Then Dragon stands on the front of the ship and summons an attack like you mentioned at the WG forces decimating them. The Gorosei will be on the line with Ciphor pol as this happens and make their commentary that war with Revo's must start now. I think a giant AoE flex suits Dragon and making the WG, especially Gorosei plan fail would be perfect for him.

Yeah, the reason I went with "atmosphere" was because a lightning bolt hit Buggy when he was about to execute Luffy.
So this isn't simply a "wind" DF, it should be something more.

It would be quite overpowered too, yes. But this is what would be fitting of all this guy's buildup so far. He is the most "saved" character by far, by Oda.

Now that you mention it, yea him wiping out all the CP0 with his powers could be his flex moment.
But CP0 also, like admirals, suffers from the lack of hype moments themselves. From their failures in Wano, to Lucci/Kaku underwhelming performance in Egghead.
I am fine with Dragon taking down CP0, but first I want them to get their own hype moment so that it would feel like something special when Dragon takes them out. Else we would be like "meh whatever, they were trash anyway"

Hm I still think cutting an island truly in half would be a huge feat. I'm not imagining him just carving a canyon or something. I'm thinking the cut is so deep it goes deep enough to expose lava and truly split the island in half with the ocean forming in between. I don't think we've seen anything close to this except when WB used Gura Gura powers to do that in Marineford.

As for who he'd flex against I think him taking out an Admiral would be dope to cement the Marine Hunter epithet. I also like your idea of CG going to attack Impel Down to free the other former warlords. I think Impel down allows to hype flex moment opportunities:
  • Imagine Mihawk defeating Magellan with a named finisher attack at full strength and cutting an Impel Down an island in half the way I described it. This would mean the cut goes through all the levels of hell and splits the whole thing down the middle. This would be the end of Impel Down and a giant free for all escape by everyone. This would be the permanent end of one of the 3 great WG locations!
  • On the other hand another cool opportunity for flex moment for Mihawk are the Gates of Justice. Like imagine the way they get to Impel Down is Mihawk cuts the Gate of Justice clean across diagonally making it collapse all together. This would mean the end of WG ocean current and would hype Mihawk af.

I suppose yeah, that would be impressive. Cut the entire thing in half that it becomes two island with ocean in between them.
Cutting Magellan + gates of justice in half in the same swing, yeah I can get behind that lol

Haha I expect that to happen too. I think too many people sleep on his hype. I don't like making a very direct claim like Mihawk > Shanks due to be WSS but I do think Mihawk is up there. Personally I put both Shanks and Mihawk as >= Kaido. This is just shonen 101 for me since Shanks & Mihawk & even BB are essentially going to be at their peak strength in the present story and they are also the peak of power in current era. I expect the feats we will see out of all 3 to be what we'd expect to see out of Roger, WB, Garp etc when they were at their peak and at the pinnacle of their era. This forum will def have meltdown when the full fights for these characters happen.

I still don't see why WSS argument can't be used. Especially given how Oda and official materials keep repeating it and said he's that in both name and actuality (meaning he really is that), probably cause they saw the fraud allegations and got tired of it lmao. But I'll drop it for now lol, cause that won't go anywhere.
But anyway, I have Kaido above both Mihawk and Shanks until proven otherwise. I won't have them above past top tiers by default, just because they are saved for later. Kaido wasn't taken down in a true 1v1 anyway.

The top 5 of "mid gen" IMO:
1. Kaido
2. Dragon
3. Mihawk
4. Shanks
5. Akainu

Current Blackbeard isn't impressive at all, as per expectations. He will need a 3rd DF or awakenings or something to finally surpass the likes of Shanks/Mihawk/Kaido and get to EoS villain material.
The current Blackbeard, honestly I think even current Luffy may beat him though I recognize that he has superior portrayal.

We will have a meltdown only when Mihawk gets to flex lol.
Cause with the others like Shanks or Dragon, people are already ready to wank him. The prevalent agenda here is against specifically Mihawk. Cause the dude has to deal with union of Shanks agenda and anti-Zoro agenda lol.
At this point I'm just waiting for it, I'll be quite insufferable for a couple of weeks at least when that happens lmao.

Yeah I agree she lost not only due to CIS/PIS. Both Kid & Law are impressive peeps and BM is just not as impressive as the other Yonko we've seen either (if you ask me). Regarding the haki knocking people out I think she is constantly blasting CoC haki but doesn't appear to use aCoC much.
Ehh, I think when conqueror's haki is used by an advanced conqueror's user, it is more likely than not that it's gonna be the advanced version.
There is no point in BM using basic conqueror's haki in fight against Kid/Law.

Anyway, yeah. I think it's high time people recognize that Big Mom is the least impressive Yonko. Rather than just attribute all her anti feats to plot or CIS or whatnot.

Mihawk is for sure going to be a monster. There is a lot going for him so I don't know why anyone would claim he is YC level when he is clearly going to be one of the strongest fighters the manga has to offer.
  • He is one of 3 fighters who the narrator has given a World's Strongest title. The other two being WB and Kaido so it's clear Oda's intentions with these titles is to convey top class strength.
  • He has the most powerful of all the 12 Great Blades in Yoru. The only other characters we have ever known to even own a 12 Great Blades are WB and Roger. Again placing Mihawk among the best of the best.
  • Mihawk is the only living swordsman who uses a black blade and has been hinted to have accomplished this feat himself. The fact that turning Enma black is a goal for Zoro and that the only other character known to have done this is Ryuma makes this a very big deal too.
  • His first and only bounty we readers have seen is already within the top bounties ever. I know people don't like using bounties but they do indicate the level of hype Oda wants us to have even if they are not direct measure of power level.
  • Mihawk is the end goal of one of the main characters of the story purely in the realm of combat.
  • Lastly, he is an unofficial Yonko. The reality is that Mihawk is the Yonko of the Cross Guild which definitely places him as a Yonko level fighter.
At the end of the day this manga is a Shonen too so powerful characters who only end up fighting towards the end will likely be the peak of the story. We don't have enough info to genuinely claim a power level order between people like Shanks, Kaido, and Mihawk BUT we do have enough info to argue that these 3 are at the peak of power in the current era.

Just do to order of revelations in the characters combat ability, I personally wouldn't be surprised if both Shanks & Mihawk are >= Kaido.

Yep, this plus official materials comparing Shanks/Mihawk to the Roger/Whitebeard of the current era.

They used to duel all the time, similar to Roger/WB. Have a friendly relationship, drink together. Mihawk has a world's strongest title, doesn't care about finding OP or becoming PK.

I'd say the below 3 are the top of the "mid gen",
Shanks - Roger
Mihawk - Whitebeard
Kaido - Rocks

People thought he's YC1+ or some crazy shit cause of the whole Vista thing, when it should've been obvious to anyone that Mihawk wasn't really going all out there.
1058 ended that for good (for the most part). The new cope now is that he is a top tier, but is a weak or standard top tier. Zoro is only one powerup away from being your standard top tier, and dudes think Mihawk is on the lower end of that spectrum lmao.

Makes sense; the top tiers treat Marco with respect in regard to his power, the same kind of respect we haven't seen King or Katakuri receive. Even a completely neutered WB pirates were still considered threats when it came down to taking down Teach.
