With the exit of Caribou, the crew is missing their Token Villain Pet. They feel incomplete without that element.

Here's the way I see it:
1. Kuma/Bonney is the most likely duo for a full-time status crew member. Kuma has more going for him, including the devil fruit number scheme. The only thing that prevents his proper joining is Oda changing his mind.
2. Imu going after Vivi requires her involvement in the final arcs. Even if she weren't officially on the crew, she's still getting screen time.
3. Yamato is pretty much doing the Jinbe thing right now. Almost guaranteed Yamato will be there for the final wars.
4. I'm actually concerned about the numbers for the Red Hair Pirates and Blackbeard Pirates. Those core members are the only "constraint" I see on the actual strawhat crew size.
5. Due to the prophecy, I think we have to acknowledge, that the final leg of One Piece is going to have to take us from Raftel back to the Red Line, and then, we need the Fishman Island destruction, on top of the fights at the top of the world, essentially. There's more than enough time to get a rapid succession of 'crew members' to do the fights, but honestly, how much 'adventure' is left after Elbaf? I don't really think there is a lot.
6. In One Piece Green, we saw an original concept for the crew which showed 9 total members, Luffy included. Then we found out that Oda edited the image to hide the fact that there was a Jinbe proto-design in there, which he then later revealed. This updated image had 10 members. It's possible that the image will be updated again. It's possible that ten was the end. Maybe if one looks into the original roles, and keeps in mind the characters added once the series expanded in scope, they can guesstimate the final intended crew size.

To some degree, I don't see the point of arguing "crew members" for what will essentially be a final gauntlet once we get into the battle phase. And then, when you consider that the crew regularly has guests like Law/Momo/Kinnemon/Kanjuro, you could even have a situation where we enter the final phase with people who aren't crew members, that still get crew member-like panel time.
Distill it further, and the only distinction that "crew members" have over guests is that they will stick with the crew after the saga is over, but if the saga is over after the war, there is, essentially, no difference between the proper members and the guests, pragmatically.

For example. Vegapunk and Bonney could be with the strawhats from now until the end. Kinnemon and Momo were with us for over 100 chapters. They did plot-relevant things. Vegapunk and Bonney, as guests, could probably do the same.
Another way of thinking of it: If One Piece only has 200 chapters left, and Vegapunk and Bonney rode with the crew for 200 chapters, is there any practical difference between being a guest or a 'crew member?'

Now, in 2014, Oda said people would be joining the crew in rapid succession. That was the first time (I believe) he said something about future crew mates post the statement that the next crew member (Jinbe) was a former boss. I believe (more like hope with all my heart) he wasn't speaking of the grand fleet. If rapid succession is true, we have more than 1 person still joining the crew proper.

As for the appropriateness:
1. Yamato is appropriate
2. Vivi is appropriate (but she isn't sailing full time post final war.)
3. Kuma is appropriate


I think, to some degree, something worth asking is "Who is going to be in the final crew spread?"
That is really where the final "definitive" strawhat crew is going to showcased in any meaningful fashion.

Regarding hints, I guess Luffy just punches a wall.

Jinbe is reunited with Luffy due through circumstance with an Emperor, so Luffy and Yamato reuniting because of Blackbeard makes it all the more fitting.
