Stats. You can google yourself too. Avarage age of death in Japan is unusually high in global standards.
This so off topic, but I'm getting so annoyed people insisting on their own opion on the matter over what is facts that I had to say something.
Avarage japanese person lives to be over 80. Mangaka avarage is around 60. Just because you can name couple of exceptions to one direction or the other, does not change that the general statics point towards about 20 years live expectancy difference.
This is a strong indication that mangaka lifestyle is very taxing to one's body. And only way to change that is to change the lifestyle. And that means less drawing, more sleep, exercise and balanced diet. If that means that the norm of 1 chapter per week is no longer sustainable, the we as audiences should just accept that we get content less frequently and not bitch about online.
Oh, and these numbers can easily be found in Google. You can research yourself first before you start counter-arguing with flimsy opinions and first come to mind exceptions to the general rule, rather demand someone to do it for you. Statistic facts are facts. Not something to suddenly turn falsehoods if you just argue and argue enough.

Are you just a troll? What do you mean "oh google" like search engines aren't good?
Japan's average life expectancy is 84 years as of 2024 and is expected to continue going up (you can download the full table of life expectancy by country from the UN site, google it, go to wiki, etc), second only to Hong Kong. That's just a plain fact so not sure why you are questioning it.
68 is not old unless you are living in a developing country.

I think I know how you‘re feeling. Also failed when trying to explain him some basic about statistics.
And I agree with you google offers plenty of nice data. You can even use google scholar in order to find scientific articles, not much left to desire.
Talking bout data I wonder how many of the Mangaka are heavy smokers. I know Oda is one. Recent US study‘s suggest that heavy smoking (10 cigarettes a day and more)significantly increases the chances of cardiovascular diseases even for middle aged people (this is from a rather recent US study). And of course male heavy smokers have a 9 years shorter lifespan on average than male nonsmokers and female heavy smokers a 7,5 years shorter lifespan compared to female nonsmokers.
So my guess is that quite a lot Mangaka are heavy smokers.
Osamu Tezuka (Astro Boy) - 60 (His last words were: "I'm begging you, let me work!", spoken to a nurse who had tried to take away his drawing equipment.)
Eiichiro Oda is 49 and is increasingly having health complications.
There are top 10 lists online about this exact topic, that's how common it is.
I hope Oda takes his health seriously. As much as it would suck, but One Piece turning into a quarterly release like how Black Clover has might be the best scenario for Oda. And that would be best for Oda and everyone else. Not that is has been rumoured or anything, I just want the man who has given us the greatest story ever told to be healthy and happy.
I respectfully understand that it's none of our business as a fandom, but I really wish we knew more details about what these nebulous "health complications" are. I selfishly wish I knew what level of panic I should be at, but that's also just... reflective of the current times, frankly.
Meanwhile Oda is recovering according to this post from pewpiece, (from two days ago)
So i hope by time i am typing, Oda is doing much better.
let's hope, it is only (fatigue at worst) and / or some light seasonal illness.
i wish the work-life-health balance questions were part of the the last sbs discussions, (in a subtle way of course)...just to know Oda's opinion about it
The link I provided in my other post is the life expectancy statistics provided by the Japanese government. There isn’t really a better source than that.

Smoking is definitely big there and in their industry. Probably because it relieves stress too. I don't know if Oda is personally a smoker but wouldn't be surprised if he is and it impacting his health.

I mean, please don't actually answer, I just skimmed a couple pages and it seems everyone is in general agreement that A. Japan has a globe-leading life expectancy and B. a significant number of the busiest mangaka have died short of this.
Past that people are getting huffy about...citations?
A couple [hopefully non-argumentative] cents to add:
1. The Japanese work culture has a weird effect on celebrities who often downplay time off for their public image (or, had...I lived there before influencers were a thing, so what the F do I know?). Mangaka "doing research"? Well, consider how many foreign cultures Oda has referenced in various arcs. It's just not a thing to announce vacation-y breaks. Now, I'm not saying Oda and his team are lying that he's focused on his health, just that in Japan that is extremely believably a euphemism for, "My doctor said I needed to take time off and I'm a billionaire [in yen], so...yeah..."
I hope, at least, and will low-key go with this until any actual illnesses are announced.
2. Life expectancy is an average. Like, even in ancient times it was far from unheard of for people to live to 60, 70+; infant and child mortality dragged the stats down. Japan has a lot of people who break 100, but also notable issues with stress-related deaths across a ton of professions. It's of course not 1-to-1, but with a life expectancy of 84, for every >100-year-old you get there's gonna be someone who goes at <68. The mean might be closer to 90 (I have no idea and am not gonna look it up), but that's still going to be doing a lot to balance the folks who die 0–83 from diseases, accidents, suicides, etc.
Mangaka may statistically die younger than the national expectancy, but so do a lot of other workers, and it's probably more exceptional re: national statistics that communities like Okinawa have an especially high concentration of centenarians.
3. As an ASoIaF nerd more than anything, I'll just say y'all are a bunch of sweet summer children for worrying about a 49-year-old who has given his narrative endgame a five year window. Try a fat 76-year-old from Jersey who has at least three giant books—the first of which has taken 13+ years—and nine novellas to finish. You learn to just be grateful and hope for the best, because talking about it too much really starts to feel icky.
I see you already got the answer on Oda being a smoker.
About you wondering why stressed people tend to smoke:
to give you a short and simple answer the reason is Dopamine. It‘s a Neurotransmitter which is also released when smoking. Dopamine is part of the body‘s motivation system, the desire for a Dopamine reaction is what drives/ motivates people to do certain things. It‘s commonly known as a chemical of pleasure. Problem is if you do something too frequently the body gets used to it. Meaning you’re going to need more cigarettes to reach the same Dopamine level that you did reach after smoking your first cigarette. That’s the (simplified) explanation of how addictions such as smoking cigarettes start.

Thanks for that. Despite the smoking or other health-related issues, I’m willing to believe their announcement until further evidence compels me to believe otherwise.
I'll help you out my guy. So that claim specifically comes from something related to Strong World. Now, the actual interview where he said this is not somewhere that I can easily find, and I have a lot of interviews available. So, right now, we're in a situation where people are mentioning that information without the source linked in any, for example, reddit post talking about it. I can assure you that I read something that said that about Oda's substance usage, but who knows, maybe that was fabricated.
THAT SAID, I have some more interviews easily findable. One thing to note is that I follow and trust Sandman, the person that translates the interviews a lot of times. Here's some things regarding Oda's health--
From One Piece Great Newspaper Volume 2 (2016-2017 somewhere) Oda used to say that all he needed was coffee and cola 4 years ago. But now Oda pays attention to his health. He makes it a rule to drink water 2 liters a day. He thinks he can stay healthy if only he drinks much water. He sometimes exercise on fitness equipments in his studio.
The interviewer asks Oda if he has some health issues now that he is in his 40s. Oda answers that his health is not good, but he can come up with an interesting manga thanks to his short sleep and final push in his works. Oda thinks it would be great if he can draw a good manga with 8-hours-sleep.
Shueisha allows him to take more breaks these days. Oda wonders if this is because they are worried that ONE PIECE might come to an end due to his health problem. Oda got hospitalized after he works in Film Z. He thought the staffs finally noticed that if he worked too hard he would be down, but after all he got involved in ONE PIECE Film again...
There was a note in this one where I believe the translator noted diabetes medication in Oda's office.
Here's another: (Source:ChinaTimes / Translation: rio poneglyph , 2014 Oda frankly says "As I'm getting older, I've slightly adjusted my sleep time. I go to bed at 8 (morning) and wake up at 12 (noon), making sure that I have 4 hours of sleep. Don't need to worry about my health, it's all fine now." (This is probably around the first big health scare.)
A lot of these interviews are being lost, but we have them available through the wayback machine.
I would like to translate and compile Oda's interviews and trivias in this thread. The first post will be updated when new interesting information about Oda is revealed. "Basically I don't kill any characters because I wish the readers to feel satisfied after an arc ended." Asahi Evening...

The above link will take you to a giant collection of interviews, with more links for people to check out.
Brad, I'll keep looking for the original source of the smoking and drinking to handle the stress, but as I alluded to, that particular interview is elusive, if it does indeed exist. To some degree, asking Sandman directly might be the fastest move.
As a more light-hearted thing, check out what Oda said about Kaido back in the day:
"When Kaidou appeared for the first time, I said that Luffy can't defeat such a strong character yet. And I'm yet to know how Luffy would defeat Kaidou. Probably my audience will not be satisfied if the reason for defeating Kaidou is just because Luffy's punch is so strong. Luffy and I have to find a solution somehow."
