I'll help you out my guy. So that claim specifically comes from something related to Strong World. Now, the actual interview where he said this is not somewhere that I can easily find, and I have a lot of interviews available. So, right now, we're in a situation where people are mentioning that information without the source linked in any, for example, reddit post talking about it. I can assure you that I read something that said that about Oda's substance usage, but who knows, maybe that was fabricated.
THAT SAID, I have some more interviews easily findable. One thing to note is that I follow and trust Sandman, the person that translates the interviews a lot of times. Here's some things regarding Oda's health--

From One Piece Great Newspaper Volume 2 (2016-2017 somewhere)
Oda used to say that all he needed was coffee and cola 4 years ago. But now Oda pays attention to his health. He makes it a rule to drink water 2 liters a day. He thinks he can stay healthy if only he drinks much water. He sometimes exercise on fitness equipments in his studio.

The interviewer asks Oda if he has some health issues now that he is in his 40s. Oda answers that his health is not good, but he can come up with an interesting manga thanks to his short sleep and final push in his works. Oda thinks it would be great if he can draw a good manga with 8-hours-sleep.

Shueisha allows him to take more breaks these days. Oda wonders if this is because they are worried that ONE PIECE might come to an end due to his health problem. Oda got hospitalized after he works in Film Z. He thought the staffs finally noticed that if he worked too hard he would be down, but after all he got involved in ONE PIECE Film again...

There was a note in this one where I believe the translator noted diabetes medication in Oda's office.

Here's another: (Source: ChinaTimes / Translation: rio poneglyph , 2014
Oda frankly says "As I'm getting older, I've slightly adjusted my sleep time. I go to bed at 8 (morning) and wake up at 12 (noon), making sure that I have 4 hours of sleep. Don't need to worry about my health, it's all fine now." (This is probably around the first big health scare.)

A lot of these interviews are being lost, but we have them available through the wayback machine.
The above link will take you to a giant collection of interviews, with more links for people to check out.

Brad, I'll keep looking for the original source of the smoking and drinking to handle the stress, but as I alluded to, that particular interview is elusive, if it does indeed exist. To some degree, asking Sandman directly might be the fastest move.

As a more light-hearted thing, check out what Oda said about Kaido back in the day:
"When Kaidou appeared for the first time, I said that Luffy can't defeat such a strong character yet. And I'm yet to know how Luffy would defeat Kaidou. Probably my audience will not be satisfied if the reason for defeating Kaidou is just because Luffy's punch is so strong. Luffy and I have to find a solution somehow."

I personally just like talking about statistics and semantics.

It would be beyond sad if OP ended abruptly because of Oda Senpai's health. 🥺🥺🥺🥺

I wish the Final arc would start ASAP.

I've had an idea for a while now that Elbaf itself is basically one half OF the final (stretch of?) arc(s?). It's going to continue along like a normal "liberate the island" arc for a while before being wildly interrupted by the chaos happening in the outside world. We get some typical palace intrigue drama for a while, blah blah blah. Eventually, the strongest army in the world mobilizes under Luffy (I assume through some insane gag with Ussop) and the final stretch of the race begins. Probably when Imu attacks Elbaf with Uranus.

Quite honestly I'd be very good with even one year break for Oda if this break was dedicated to quitting smoking. It would be impossible for him to quit during work and work just after quitting, he's gotta adjust. I hope someone will suggest something like that for Oda.

I had been heavy smoker for years, then I've quit 4 years ago and feel so much better that it's hard to compare. I can imagine what it's like to be heavy smoker for 30 years like Oda, heck, for me even 10 years was just like the ticket for a grave.

Oda is really crazy if he thinks that health break once in a while will negate his lack of sleep, nicotine addiction and energy drinks addiction (I've read that he drinks them almost like water, way too many).

Now that you mention the strongest army in the world... I think now I understand how it makes sense for luffy to come to lead such a force. Before to me it didn't seem like there was room for this in the story because, welp, the strongest army should be a mostly ridiculous force. But the flood reveal could contextualize how such a force makes sense on luffy's side.

I've always maintained that the actual strongest force in the world are the marines. Because the are a worldwide force that sort of manages to hold the line against each yonko. And this considering each yonko so far is a massive army with potentially tens of thousands of members. But now the flood is coming and most islands will end up underwater. So what use is to have all these forces spread out like this? The most natural move for the WG once the flood is close would be to recall every single marine back to Majiroa. Perhaps not every marine but at least every marine with a rank. Imagine the WG summoning every marine lieutenant or higher to Majiroa... It'd be a force that could require luffy to have giants and more on his back. I am kinda wondering if the final war will be a siege of majiroa or a race to OP....

I’d be fully willing to except one chapter a month if that was necessary to help with Oda’s health, rather than rushing Elbaf into the final arc out of fear.

Totally on the same side. Actually scary how quickly time flies by recently. But in the sense of One Piece, Oda is free to do it however he wants it to be done. Still kinda ironic how a Manga about pirates, dreams, adventure and first of all freedom actually makes him chain himself to his drawing desk.
But Oda is a big boy so I‘m sure he‘s gonna figure a way that suits him perfectly.
That said a monthly release or a really long break for health recovery appears to be the best choice IMO.

IMO it is not about less chapters, it is because he is not taking care of himself (not enough sleep, smoking....). If he is not able to keep that clean life pace, he will be in an even worst shape...which nobody wants.

Oda should stop drawing One Piece. Just be the creative director and writer. At this point all the artist who do backgrounds for him should know his style like its their own. It would probably be unoticeable. I HAVE to think that Jump would keep his salary the same out of curteousy at this point. They can afford to pay the assistants more by simply increasing the budget to keep the golden goose alive. Oda literally IS Jump right now. What else do they have? MHA and JJK are gone. Anything in the pipes at all?

I actually wouldn't mind if one piece went on hiatus for a year. That way oda and the staff can get as much rest as they need.
Not like the world is going to be starved at one piece content next year.
But that's not going to happen.

Whaaaat is everyone actually arguing about?

I mean, please don't actually answer, I just skimmed a couple pages and it seems everyone is in general agreement that A. Japan has a globe-leading life expectancy and B. a significant number of the busiest mangaka have died short of this.

Past that people are getting huffy about...citations?

A couple [hopefully non-argumentative] cents to add:

1. The Japanese work culture has a weird effect on celebrities who often downplay time off for their public image (or, had...I lived there before influencers were a thing, so what the F do I know?). Mangaka "doing research"? Well, consider how many foreign cultures Oda has referenced in various arcs. It's just not a thing to announce vacation-y breaks. Now, I'm not saying Oda and his team are lying that he's focused on his health, just that in Japan that is extremely believably a euphemism for, "My doctor said I needed to take time off and I'm a billionaire [in yen], so...yeah..."

I hope, at least, and will low-key go with this until any actual illnesses are announced.

2. Life expectancy is an average. Like, even in ancient times it was far from unheard of for people to live to 60, 70+; infant and child mortality dragged the stats down. Japan has a lot of people who break 100, but also notable issues with stress-related deaths across a ton of professions. It's of course not 1-to-1, but with a life expectancy of 84, for every >100-year-old you get there's gonna be someone who goes at <68. The mean might be closer to 90 (I have no idea and am not gonna look it up), but that's still going to be doing a lot to balance the folks who die 0–83 from diseases, accidents, suicides, etc.

Mangaka may statistically die younger than the national expectancy, but so do a lot of other workers, and it's probably more exceptional re: national statistics that communities like Okinawa have an especially high concentration of centenarians.

3. As an ASoIaF nerd more than anything, I'll just say y'all are a bunch of sweet summer children for worrying about a 49-year-old who has given his narrative endgame a five year window. Try a fat 76-year-old from Jersey who has at least three giant books—the first of which has taken 13+ years—and nine novellas to finish. You learn to just be grateful and hope for the best, because talking about it too much really starts to feel icky.

New here? 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Here they'd argue just about anything.
Well people basically argue just about anything. 😂😂😂😂

Right now? Dadandan is an up and coming anime/ manga. One piece will always be number one currently but there are other manga that’s on the rise.
