Chapter 18 is.... interesting

I really hope Tsugumi exposing herself for "comic" relief isnti going to be a common theme. Definitely not a fan.

Mushasi seems to prefer older women anyway.

The official Orient twitter announced that volume 1 will get a second edition, which means it managed to make a
profit. I don’t know how much a volume needs to sell to be re-printed, but maybe 100k? Also, for those who are interested, since they were published around the same time, it seems the first volume of Eden Zero is selling a bit better than Orient volume 1.

Ch 18 impression:

Just when I thought Musashi could be blander than post time-skip Aladdin and more obnoxious than a certain swordsman from Heliohapt, Ohtaka showed an unexpected side to him. It made him almost endearing. As for Kojirou, is he this manga’s Alibaba (him wanting a girl to notice him and love him for who he is)?.

While I doubt it, I hope this will be the last time we see Tsugumi pulling something like that. Back when she attempted to rob them, it looked like an underhanded move to take them off-guard, but I found it even more tasteless in this chapter.

Overall, while it’s possible that Ohtaka changes her mind later, I’m glad that it seems Musashi x Tsugumi will be platonic. I think someone more serious and mature is more suitable for him ( I prefer someone like Fio from Porco Rosso)

Ohtaka did this for a charity campaign recently:

Sense scans is 5-6 chapters behind. It seems they lack staff for this project and they are currently recruiting. It would be nice if Kodansha released the latest chapters translated on Crunchyroll like they are doing with NNT and Eden Zero.

Chapter 13

Pretty sweet how Kojiro utilised his fishing skills to grab the key, if he could apply that same ingenuity to his swordsmanship it could create an interesting sword style, especially since the Iron Oni blades so far have all been using that energy lassos thing. Kind of like how the real life Musashi was apparently inspired to create his unique sword style after watching the performance of the Japanese taiko drum or how Sasaki Kojiro’s Tsubame Gaeshi technique was based on the motion of a swallow's tail during flight. Speaking of which I wonder if this version of Kojiro has learned that technique yet. Coincidentally there’s someone named Tsubame in the arc though the two have no relation.

Seems the Oni will have elemental affinities, the red Kishin Engoku Tengu summoning fire and the blue Kodama basically becoming a tsunami, kind of weird that the tree spirit Oni is a water elemental though but I like the how they’ve found strength in numbers and unity not too different from humans. In Japanese folklore a Kodama’s life force is directly tied to the tree it inhabits, and if either the tree or the kodama dies, the other cannot live, that could be way to defeat them apart from type advantage if the weapons Bushi use have elemental affinities too.

So it’s pretty much confirmed Tsugumi will be joining the main cast, taking on her sister’s will to become the chief ninja commander of the strongest Bushidan and protecting the weak, also show through Tsugumi inheriting her weapon. Though that might put her at odds with Musashi eventually, since his reasoning for wanting to be a Bushi has nothing to do with protecting the weak or liberating Japan but more to do with making a name for himself and because he thinks it will be fun.

Liked the design of those disembodied head Oni that appeared in the flashback, they seem to be Tsurube otoshi. I’m guessing only low level Oni have those stars for faces.

Hideo’s authoritarian parenting style explains how Tsugumi ended up how she is currently, the character arcs of the main three seem to have two things in common, not conforming to those around you at the expense of yourself and living up to the virtues of Bushido envisioned by Nitobe Inazo.

Musashi being Honesty/Sincerity, Kojiro being Honour and Tsugumi being Courage, the characters start out lacking one of these virtues of Bushido but acquire them over the course of the story. This passage from the book pretty much describes Musashi’s character in the first chapter, Without veracity and sincerity, politeness is a farce and a show. "Propriety carried beyond right bounds," says Masamuné, "becomes a lie."

While Korjio’s arc is about him reacquiring his Samurai honour. ”THE sense of honour, implying a vivid consciousness of personal dignity and worth, could not fail to characterise the samurai, born and bred to value the duties and privileges of their profession.”
"He beareth not the sword in vain." What he carries in his belt is a symbol of what he carries in his mind and heart, loyalty and honour.

And this one describes Tsugumi situation until the end of the chapter. "Perceiving what is right," he says, "and doing it not, argues lack of courage." The books also chastises those that rush into the jaws of death calling it a dog’s death, which goes inline with how Hideo is handling the situation.

In the end it seems she’s finally ready to go against Hideo, doing what her sister could not do, keeping in with the theme of surpassing our predecessors.

Chapter 14

Really good art this chapter, the tsunami of Kodama approaching the castle really set the tone for how severe the situation is, a nice doomsday clock and since we met a few of the people in this Bushidan before hand there’s some investment in their fate.

Cool panel of Musashi and Kojiro standing amongst the defeated members of the Kosameda bushidan, kind of neat that before this on page 399 you can see Musashi behind members of the Bushidan amongst the smoke while they’re distracted by Hideo and Tsugumi talking.

Another one of the 18 Togakure Ryu Ninja skills used in this chapter, Tsugumi has utilised Taijutsu(when she fought with Musashi), Chi-Mon(her idea of escaping to higher ground to avoid the Oni) , Bo-Ryaku(her honey trap), Ba-Jutsu (but riding a motorcycle instead of a horse ),Kayaku-Jutsu(the smoke bombs this chapter), Seishin Teki Kyoyo (in chapter 13 where she was mentally preparing herself to go against Hideo and remember why she’s doing this)

Hideo seems to embody the values and beliefs that Samurai supposedly had in reality, considering it a dishonor to retreat, believing they “must fight Oni to the bitter end, down to the man”. Death before dishonor especially.

Tsugumi mentioning how he would implement Kiri sute gomen on those who dared to go against him and retreat. Even how he mentioned wanting to bring the necks of the attacking Oni back with him, which seems quite similar to head collecting an act where Samurai would present the heads of their enemies as proof of them fulfilling their duty.

Even his positive trait of faithfully serving his Lord Tokugawa is what the Samurai were excepted to do, I wouldn’t be surprised if he committed seppuku considering how much of a traditional samurai he is.

Compared to the Takeda(except that guy who raised a death flag for Naotora) and Tsubame who seem much more like freedom fighters or superheroes than Samurai. Even their clothing shows this Hideo has traditional samurai wear and wears his hear in a ponytail. While the Takdea looked more like Super S
entai or Kamen rider superheroes, the Takeda even had the ability to fly to top it off.

Its seems like there was a shift in what it meant to be a Samurai in this world when the Oni appeared, and while most people managed to make a smooth transition, there still seems to be people like Hideo who are still stuck in the old ways.

So one of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s scions is still alive, weird how even though Kosameda Hideo is serving under him and yet he has his own Bushidan. I’m interested to see what kind of person this successor is and how most people perceived him, considering how his predecessor is being lambasted so hard that even students are taught how horrible he supposedly was before his death.

Chapter 15

Great action this chapter, though a bit cluttered in some parts. There were some great moments like Hideo doing that deflection parry on Tsugumi’s attack, loved the after image like effect to convey to the motions of parry and also how he countered Tsugumi’s Tomoe nage.

Kind of surprised that Tsugumi is the one taking on Hideo directly I thought she wouldn’t do able to considering how soon this is happening after her other failed attempts to go against him. But it’s nice that she’s fighting her own battles I suppose.

The Kodama look like a literal tsunami in that first page, fitting since the origin of the term Oni was to conceptualise natural disasters like thunder, storms and earthquakes.

There seems to be some parallels between the humans and the Oni.

The Kodama are labeled low level Oni that are weak individually, Hideo refer to the citizens as weak creatures that can’t live on their own.

They both make up for this weakness by travelling as a group, the Bushidan for the humans and the Tsunami form for the Kodama.

Both can’t live without a certain element they’re dependent on, family for the humans and the tree that the Kodama inhabits, and if either the tree or the Kodama dies, the other cannot live (if the manga uses that trait they have from Japanese folklore)

The difference is that the humans are in compete disarray due to their conflicting interests while the Kodama Oni are perfectly unified, kind of ironic. Even these low level Oni are immensely strong compared to the humans.

Hideo is holding kin punishment over the heads of the citizens, not sure how he plans to enforce it though under the current situation. Supposedly samurai would go to great lengths to protect and glorify the name of their household/clan in action and in battle. The importances of the name was placed above the individual members of the clan. So kin punishment was the worse thing you could do to someone and since one of the themes of this manga is legacy and this act is applied with the purpose of destroying ones legacy I’m interested to see how this will be utilised later in the series against actual Samurai.

Despite the military advancement and new systems created to combat the Oni, the Bushi or at least Kosameda is held back by traditions. Which, ironically make the new systems more dangerous to humans rather than the Oni, because the Bushidan effectively makes citizens apart of the military force against the Oni. Hideo sees no problem in applying the ideals of the Samurai (like death before dishonour) on to them and expecting them to follow. Leading an entire town to its death.

Also the idea that Bushidan are a family give him complete control, based on how Japanese households at the time put fathers at the top of the family hierarchy and give them absolute authority. While those who were younger and are females were expected to be absolutely obedient. With seemingly no other generals or advisor to for him to confine in and have a council of war, creating a despotism type of rule.

Tsugumi is probably trying to invoke the power of the individual, “What is needed most in a society dominated by oppressive government is role models who show by example what it means to be free” - Academy of Ideas
By gathering the courage to confront Hideo, and boldly speaking her mind against his him, she has become a role model for the citizens. If she can defeat him in battle the ultimate form of defiance in front of them, the others will follow suit and defy his orders, which is what she mean when saying defeating Hideo will free their hearts.

Chapter 16

Hideo’s defeat was kind of underwhelming, especially after how well he fought in the previous chapter. Funny how even though the bow seems to be his signature weapon he lost as soon as he started using it.

Ohtaka really loves drawing these motorcycle double spreads huh? Not that I’m complaining. Nice little gag with that one Kodama trying to eat the bottom of the motorcycle. Speaking of eating won’t that sea of Kodama get more powerful after eating the castle?

In the final page I think I see Hideo still attached to Tsugumi’s weapons so he’s still alive, so I hope his character gets more to do later on.
So how are these people going to get to safety now? Musashi and Kojiro were traveling for a week and couldn’t find civilisation and the only communication they seem to have is that Horagai Hideo used to call Tsugumi during her fight with Musashi. Interesting how this arc concluded with a pyrrhic victory, especially this early in the series. I guess it just goes to show how the odds are stacked against the humans.

Chapter 17

I don’t know how I feel about Tsugumi and the others leaving the citizens with Hideo, if they leave what’s stopping Hideo from repeating his recent actions unopposed? I get the best thing to do when recovering from an abusive relationship is to separate oneself from the abuser as to not lapse back into that same unpleasant situation. But the same could be said for the citizens the only reason they opposed Hideo was because of Tsugumi, they should have atleast waited until reinforcement arrived. Or what if more Oni attack? Speaking of which the Kodama Oni apparently didn’t eat all the metal since they’re using construction tools.

Nice character moment between Musashi and Tsugumi, delving into the idea of family. Hideo wasn’t plain evil so may be in the future they can work things out.

This arc was pretty good overall, new tidbits of world building, new party member who underwent a character arc, a decent antagonist that contrasts with someone of the previously established characters, who is still alive with option to be expanded on more in future.

Expanded on ideas like inheriting not only the strengths of your predecessors but some of their flaws as well, family going beyond blood and showcased why the humans have been losing this war for 150 or so years.

One of the five sins that might affect a general according the Art of War is “a delicacy of honor which is sensitive to shame” a trait often associated with Samurai. A sense of honor is mostly a good thing, but it can be hazardous when the thought of shame leads to losing actions, such as entering into a battle that cannot be won.

The Art of War also agree with that last point since it states in the five essentials for victory, “He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight”

“He will win who choose army is animated by the same spirit throughout all its ranks” This might also be noteworthy since Hideo and Tsugumi had a disagreement to what even constitutes a Bushi.

Between the Oni rule and this Bushidan, there seems to be a lot of things stopping people from being self reliant and individuals. In schools people are being trained in obedience, destroying their ability to be self reliance as shown with Musashi in chapter 8 durning his argument with Kojiro.

Interesting how even after him embarking on his endeavor, he still relies on some of the ideas placed on him at the mining school. I guess that explains why his character design still has him wearing the mining uniform instead of changing into a Bushi one.

Even Hideo was trying to downplay the citizens ability to live by themselves and saying they all will be fine as long as they listen to him. He did the same to Tsugumi, kept saying she’s useless without him. But by Musashi breaking out of the chains of conformity, urging Tsugumi to do the same, who then went on the inspire the citizens. This is creating a domino effect that could bring about a huge change for all of Japan.
“Only a change in the attitude of the Individual can initiate a change in the psychology of the nation” - Carl Jung
So yeah good arc though I prefer the first arc.

Chapter 18

This chapter probably felt the most like reading Magi again especially the omake chapters.

The way Tsugumi was acting towards Musashi was similar to how she acted around Hideo in chapter 9. Showing despite defeating him she still has some lingering hang ups.

Really weird advice Tsugumi got from her sister, but I guess it reinforces the idea that we inherit both good and bad things from our predecessors, in this case the good being the ideal of protecting those weaker than you and the bad being the falling back striping.

This scene kind of reminds of the scene where Musashi and Kojiro meet in the novel named after the former by Eiji Yoshikawa. Musashi and Kojiro locked eyes while Musashi was being clung to by a girl, there it was a character called Akemi. This scene was considerably more comedic though.

So Musashi has an older woman fetish, hopefully that will quell anything shipping nonsense regarding him for a while at least, shipping always seems to bring out the worst in the fanbases of these shonen battle manga.

Though portrayed in a comedic light here, this chapter shows how much the Oni rule has altered or stunted their development, that this simple act became this huge ordeal. Whether it’s Kojiro being ostracised for being related to a Bushi or the mining school restricting Musashi actions.

Chapter 19

Like the new guys design, he’s wearing a cross and a cowl, so he seems to be a Christian. I wonder how Christianity will be used in this series, another adversary like the Buddhism based Kishin, another system of control?

Cool double spread showing all those swords, not sure what valuable weapons are doing out here without any wielders. Funny how close Hideo was to this treasure trove of swords when he was desperately seeking equipment for his cause. So it this place a graveyard or is the new guy sword smith or something?

Finally Musashi has his sword from the first promo image, his attack seemed to be lightning elemental, since the Kodama apparently frequents this area a lot and they’re going after that blue Kishin, he seems to have lucked out in that regard. Though Tsugumi and the Takeda’s weapon didn’t seem to have an element (unless they’re just light elemental) so I wonder why his weapon differs.

The crystals protruding out of Musashi’s body when he grabbed the sword was kind of reminiscent of the transformation of the Entengu Kishin after it ate that metal offering. As well as the motorcycles, I guess most things are powered by that sand Oni become when defeated, fighting fire with fire. Hopefully be learning more about this series battle system soon.

I just noticed the guy from chapters 19 and 20 is one of the elite Bushi that our main characters were reading about back in chapter 7. There are 2 others in that page we might meet them soon.

Chapter 20 Raws

Chapter 20

Eh, that’s disappointing the colour page is just the cover of volume 2.

Seems I was too hasty, the sword Musashi used broke and was taken back. Looking back at the promo image and the first colour page that sword didn’t have a tassel on the handle like this one does.

The guy with the cross thinks there is something different about Musashi. This might be referring to that promo image which stated that Musashi has some sort of special power.
“The fantasy series takes place during Japan's Warring States Period, where Japan is ruled by "___." A 15-year-old boy named Musashi will stand up to ___ with the help of a certain special power.”

Another new character who apparently is a girl, looked like a dude to me. Cool design, interesting how she has a Khakkhara, a Kitsune mask (seems to be a Tenko one) and clothing reminiscent of a Shinto priest while her master seems to be a Christian. Does the fact she has a Kistune mask mean the Kistune are good natured Oni? Because the last time humans wore clothing that evoked Oni they were siding with them.

So these two apparently don’t have names, if that’s true, it might be another case of individuality being suppressed. Our names are one of the most integral parts of our identity as an individual and helps differentiate you from others, he also dehumanizes the two of them referring to them as dogs another act that undermines individuality. Wonder if they’re apart of a cult or something, but apparently the girl is his servant would someone with enough high standing to have a servant, really be denied a name?

Speaking of names, IRL Samurai received different names over the course of his life, a name given at birth, another name upon the event of his coming of age ceremony and some times another name based on a special event. In the novel Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa, Shinmen Takezo has a metaphorical death and is reborn, to commemorate this his name is changed to Miyamoto Musashi.
Commoners were not allowed to have surnames, unless they had been awarded one for special service to their daimyo. This might be why this version of Musashi doesn’t have a surname. So both Musashi and Kojiro might receive names upon having a character moment to match the full names of their real life counterparts. Tsugumi might have an equivalent to this in the form of a legacy title, IRL the name Hanzo is actually a name passed down through the leaders of the Hattori family, there was actually five people known as Hattori Hanzo throughout history.

Love that gag where Musashi thinks he needs to overcome some huge trial to get a Kitetsutou sword and Tsugumi just tells him to buy one. So the Kaleidoscope has the power to predict the appearance of a Kishin, reminds me of Sinbad and David ability to see the paths of destiny. Really dug Engoku Tengu’s design can’t wait to see the next Kishin.

Finally caught up. I really like what's happening now. It started slow like everyone mentions but I don't think it dragged and so far I haven't seen any unnecessary information. I think it's better to slowly build a story especially if it's going to be long running than to just jump right in then end up having to do a lot of flashbacks throughout the series. My only pet peeve is how Kojirou is being handled. It's just the beginning and of course his character development can and will most likely come later, but with these constant glimpses of Musashi being special, I hope it doesn't ultimately overshadow Kojirou completely to the point where they do part ways in jealousy and anger, because I really like the dynamic between them. I do agree with the person that thinks Musashi's family background will turn out to be special. His instincts and power can't be pure coincidence.

I like Tsugumi. She's an insecure abused girl so it's going to take a while for her to function normally in society, which is why I think it will be easy enough for me to overlook her antics. Hideo mentally abused that poor girl to the point where she doesn't think she can function on her own, so i'm glad she chose to go with Musashi and Kojirou instead of staying at the castle with the villagers. This way she'll grow and become the Bushi she always dreamed of being.

I also like the look of the two new characters. It's weird how Musashi was the only one to see them. At first I thought it was all in his head but perhaps they have the power to appear and disappear at will. I'm guessing Musashi will get his new weapon from them and maybe even some training. I hope this training if it happens extends to Tsugumi and Kojirou as well. They need to get stronger together and form their Bushi group.

Chapter 21

I wonder if the idea to make Oni sand a form of currency had something to do with Oni/Kishin eating metals like Gold, Sliver and Copper, forcing them to find a replacement. The fact that Oni sand is currency does increase the incentive for Bushi to go out and defeat any Oni/Kishin they come across, though I’m sure if that is too daunting for some they may resort to theft.

The inclusion of arquebuses, has me wondering if Japan still trades with other countries despite the Oni situation and if other countries are dealing with something similar. Anyway I hope we see some arquebus users, maybe one for the main party, they were kind of getting slept on this chapter.

Musashi’s reasoning that Kojiro should be the leader because of how the two Bushidan they encountered used the family name of the leader was sound. Unlike Kojiro, Musashi doesn’t appear to see Kojiro as a rival, he doesn’t consider them in opposition, when Musashi thought he defeated Engoku Tengu he called it their victory even though Kojiro didn’t really damage him. Since they’re apart of the same team he considers his victories a victory for the whole group and vice versa. His competitive nature seems to mostly surface in regard to other Bushidan.

I guess it also could be the fact that he treasures his relationships with other people and doesn’t want to do anything to compromise them, he didn’t want to ruin his friendship with Kojiro over their argument in chapter 8 or the misunderstanding in chapter 18, same with how he didn’t want to harshly reject Tsugumi in chapter 18 and his whole conflict in chapter 1.

I think Kojiro can be a good leader, he did come up with the plan of attack in the end of the Kosameda Bushidan arc and he is definitely the most rational out of the three. Last time Musashi and Kojiro faced a Kishin, Kojiro tried to urge Musashi to give up after realizing how strong it was, there Musashi didn’t really listen to him, but now Kojiro is the leader I’m interested to see how that would play out if they enter a similar situation.

This. I think Kojirou mostly projects his own feelings as evidenced when he was shocked at how Musashi views him. From the first chapter I haven't seen Musashi hint at any sort of rivalry with Kojirou friendly or otherwise. Its always teamwork with him. Kojirou did admit to not really knowing Musashi as well as he used to since his dad died and they were separated when Musashi went to mining school. This is why I hope Kojirou's insecurity resolves in a positive way as he leads the group instead of the usual friends turned enemies turned friends again trope.

Kojirou Tries to quit smoking

P (1)

Second Day of their Journey

Kojirou: and you said ‘leave the preparations to me’...
Musashi: but I did pack the things that we’re really going to need in our journey.
Kojirou: huh? Show me.

(Musashi takes out a thick magazine titled ‘Miner’s Monthly’)

Kojirou: are you kidding me?! What purpose is this bulky book going to serve?
Musashi: my sword techniques are inspired by mining, so it could prove handy in battle.
Kojirou: but they didn’t, did they?
Musashi: well, at worst we can use it as a pot stand.

Musashi: did you pack the scroll?
Kojirou: of course I did.

(Kojirou lifts the bike seat)

Kojirou: I kept the most important things in here.
Musashi: wow!? You kept it under the seat of the iron horse!

P (2)

Musashi: this scroll is what inspired our dream... it’s really important to us... and what’s in this bundle?
Kojirou: ah! That’s...!

(Musashi unwraps the bundle to reveal a mountain of cigarettes)

Musashi: and you consider these important?
Kojirou: but if I don’t smoke, I get irritated and won’t be able to continue our journey...

Musashi: you brought so many, but what are you going to do if you run out?
Kojirou: you, you’re right...what if I try to cut back a little?
Musashi (thinking to himself): this is bad... Kojirou never succeeded in any of his attempt to quit smoking.

Kojirou: I can do it!

Sixth Day of their Journey (4th day of Kojirou quitting smoking)

(Kojirou looks pretty irritated)

P (3)

Kojirou: aa... I feel irritated...
Musashi: hey!

(Musashi rummages through their stuff)

Musashi: it’s useless, he’s trembling violently! We won’t be able to travel at this rate. Is there something that Kojirou can vent his frustration on...!?

Musashi: found it!! Here!!

(Musashi passes the Miner’s Monthly to Kojirou and Kojirou tears it in half while screaming at the top of his voice)

Kojirou: father!!!!

It looks like the magazine served as a stress reliever and then they used ot as a pot stand.

Chuuni TL Notes

竜造寺 = Ryuuzouji = Dragon-built temple(?) = Some random samurai clan that apparently got curbed by the Shimazu clan IRL, you can’t stop the Tosh after all. This isn’t the chuuniest name this chapter btw

=[Page 1]=

(Auctioneer): “25 pure Kitetsutou forged by swordsmiths of the Ryuuzouji Samurai Corps!

(Auctioneer): “If you deem yourself worthy, then step forward and become the master of one of these blades!”

(Bushi 1): “The auction is starting!”

(Bushi 2): “Don’t push!”

(Bushi 3): “Let me see!”

(Musashi): “So this is a Kitetsutou… beautiful.”

(Bushi 1): “All those swords look excellent !

(Kojirou): “But they also seem expensive…”, (”do we even have enough money? “)

(Tsugumi): “You two! Do your best and win one of those swords! Ryuuzouiji Kitetsutou are said to be first-class!”

(Musashi) “There’s seems to be a bunch of them though, I don’t know how to choose.”

(???): “Just pick the one that’s love at first sight!”

(Mitsuru): “Swords are drawn towards their master , so there’s nothing wrong with forcing one to be yours”

=[Page 4]=

(Kojirou): That’s a pretty pumped up blacksmith…

(Musashi): Okay! Onee-sama!

(Kojirou + Tsugumi): Onee-sama!?

(Musashi): “You’re so lovely”

(Smith): “Hands off the boss, you womanizer”

(Tsugumi): “And this coming from the guy who didn’t even blush when he saw me naked, where lies the difference?” (“Please teach me onee-chan”)

(Musashi): “By the way, this is the first time I’m choosing a Kitetsutou”

(Mutsuru): “Oh, is it your first time? Then this is a very special day for you”

(Kojirou): “A special day?”

= [Page 5]=

(Mitsuru): Yeah! Picking your first Kitetsutou is kind of like a coming of age ceremony, it’s a really dignified act.

(Mitsuru): And that’s because it is said that that obtaining an oni-slaying Kitetsutou is the true proof of a fully fledged Bushi

(Kojirou + Musashi): The proof of a fully fledged bushi….

(Musashi): That sounds pretty cool!”

(Auctioneer): “Well, well everyone! Please line up in front of the blade that caught your eye!”

=[Page 6]=

(Kojirou): “This one..!”

(Kojirou): “Or wait, how about this one?

(Tsugumi): “You’re weak Kojirou”

(Kojirou): “Well, if I’m not picking up a bargain here, I’m going to regret it later right?”

(Bushi 1): “This is it, my fated katana!

(Bushi 2): “Those glitering ornaments, a true masterpiece”

(Mitsuru): “It’s a masterpiece just because it glitters? My god, these stupid samurai’s know nothing about appraisal.”

(Smith ): “Boss…”

(Mitsuru): “Oh?”

=[Page 7]=

(Tsugumi): Musashi, are you going for that simple blade?

(Musashi): Yeah… For some reason this one seems fine”

(Mitsuru): That lad, he’s got some nice eyes on him!”

(Mitsuru): “What about his pal?”

(Kojirou): “This katana, I kinda feel bad that everybody is ignoring it. I’ll pick it then!”

(Mitsuru): “That sword isn’t all too bad either!”

Chuuni TL notes

焔魔大太刀 = Enma no Oodachi = Oodachi of the Blazing Devil

裂空八重桜 = Rekkuu Yaezakura = Skyrending Double Cherry Blossom

Wew, Both blades are also 六分一合金 which I assume is an alloy of 16% Kitetsu and the rest is steel? I’m not a smith so I’m not sure

=[Page 8]:=

[Announcer]: “Kitetsutou #1:「Enma no Oodachi」

[Announcer]: “Kitetsutou #2: 「Rekkuu Yaezakura」

(Kojirou & Musashi): “So these are going to be our beloved swords..”

(Kojirou): “Did the auction start already?” “(What should I do?)”

(Mitsuru): “Did you assume this was going to be a regular auction? The swords handle, why won’t you try to pick it up?

(Musashi): “Can we really touch them already?”

(Musashi): “Okay….”

=[Page 9]=

(Musashi): “Is this….!? Huh!?

=[Page 10]=

(Kojirou): “What’s happening to Musashi!?”

(Mitsuru): He’s undergoing the “Trial of the Blade”

(Kojirou): “The “Trial of the Blade”? What’s that?”

(Mitusuru): An auction of a Kitetstutou is a bit special, The bidding is done between the qualities of a Bushi.”

(Mitsuru): “You could even say that this is a ritual in which the Kitetsutou selects it’s master.”

=[Page 11]=

(Kojirou): “A sword choosing it’s master, is that even possible?”

(Tsumugi): “Simply speaking, touching a Kitetsutou releases a strange sensation”

(Tsumugi): “Anyhow, once the ritual is completed, it becomes possible to use the sword”

(Musashi): “This strange sensation”

(Musashi): “It’s the same as what I felt when I used my first Kitetsutou this morning”

(Musashi): “Yeah, then it went also like this”

=[Page 12]=

(Musashi): “It becomes darker… and my heart begins to race….. ….?

(Musashi): “Huh, this time it seems to take longer”

(Musashi): “Does it continue after this? It seems like something is coming into my view

(Musashi): “…. I don’t want to go there”

(Musashi): “It feels bad…”

(Musashi): “!?... Isn’t this Tatsuyama village? Did I return here….?

(Musashi): “Wait, this is [that time]

(Musashi): “WHAT!? WHAT DID YOU SAY DAD!!”

(Musashi): “What!? What was that just now!?!?

(Musashi): “Why am I seeing things from the past

(Musashi): “”Kitetsutou”…. “What are those things…!?”

(Musashi): “It’s becoming darker, I can’t see anything”

(Musashi): “There something in the distance….?

(Musashi): “Uwah”

(Musashi): “You….” “What are you….!?”

Chapter 22

Another new character Mitsuru, really loving the character designs in this series so far.

The idea that the sword chooses its master is quite reminiscent of the Djinns in Magi but here it seems to be more of an internal trial like Belial’s dungeon. I do love when a series ties its battle system to character progression.

Damn that flashback was brutal, dismemberment by Oxen was used as capital punishment in the Muromachi period, though I don’t know any notable examples but in other parts of the world they used this punishment as well with horses instead. Jisai’s execution seems similar to the cases of Túpac Amaru II, Robert-François Damiens and especially François Ravaillac (they both have a executioner at the ready)

The first guy was a leader of a rebellion which fits with the role of the Bushi in this story and the last two cases involved regicide.

Always thought it was a nice touch that most Bushi we see are covered in scars and serious injuries, another way to show how dangerous it is to fight Oni/Kishin, but after this chapter it seems like some of those injuries might have been done by humans.

Man, I sure would like to talk about this series with you guys, but I can't bring myself to do Raws+ separate translations. At this rate I may just wait to continue reading it when or if VIZ licenses it. Cause it almost seems like sense has dropped it :(

Cought up!

umm to start, the kosamedan conclusion wasn't paticluarly interesting so skip that, minus I'd like a constant character with tsugumi sister's kind of face. A lot of characters have been introduced since then, I found goat eyes and his lady(?) friend to be most intetresting, hope to see them soon. The market is an interesting idea then again I don't like the bushi lady design, it's too plain and scandalous bushi gals to my taste when. Kojirou being the leader is a point I like, also musashi's flashbacks can go for a while, concerning KojiPop death and even before.

Over all it's still a constant ups and downs, revisit once more chapters pile up

Ch 23

A quick summary

When Kojirou picks up the sword that he has chosen, blue crystals extend from his back as though they were wings, indicating that he has passed the demon blade test. During the test, the demon blade enters a person and reveal their past. At first, Kojirou thinks that he has accomplished quite a feat, but when he looks around him he sees warriors left and right passing the test with flying colors. He notes that the color of the crystals differ from one person to another, and Mitsuru explains that that’s the color of the warrior’s spirit. There are five colors (red, blue, green, yellow and white), and to Kojirou’s disappointment, blue is very common while as red and white are rare.

Musashi is still undergoing the test and the ball that showed at the end of the previous chapter transforms into a woman, who evokes a feeling akin to nostalgia in Musashi. She embraces him and he lets his guard down, finding her warm, but next, to his horror, she transforms into a monster and crushes him, saying that she doesn’t need him. In reality, black crystals extends from Musashi, shocking everyone, and recalled a story that whoever sprouts black crystals is someone who’s rejected by the demon blade and can never use them. At the end of the chapter, there is lighting in the distance, and it seems the blue boss has arrived.

The manga has gotten interesting. I think Musashi will undego some trial or he faces his past and becomes able to wield a demon blade like the preview artwork showed. I also get the feeling that if Musashi becomes able to use a demon blade and his color is red, it might fuel the rivalry between him and Kojirou. The color of the spirits reminded me of the rukhs and their different colors in Magi.
