While absence does make the heart grow fonder, as they say. I think the improvement here is very noticeable. Or actually maybe "improvement" isn't the right word. Because for a while previously SIU had been putting out content that didn't feel like ToG to me.
I was honestly a little concerned he'd just lost the magic. Which happens to authors now and again. The last few arcs really felt like he'd lost his way creatively in a few ways and I just wasn't certain he'd be able to get ToG back to being the series that pulled me in originally. That's the most encouraging thing about this return to me. This doesn't just feel like ToG, this feels like great ToG.
One clear example of this was in 555.
The introduction of Po Bidau Tiara. SIU introduced a lot of characters he was trying to hype in the last few arcs. A lot of which fell pretty flat. The problem was he'd just throw them out there with some expository dialogue saying "This person is important" or awkward flashback which just makes them feel like filler characters. With her introduction. He used Gustang and Khun to make the introduction, two characters we know well or whose opinions carry weight with us. Then sort of hid her face for the first few panels, as if he was teasing it, and then finished out the intro with a shared panel spread with her and Yuri. Suggesting visually, that maybe she's comparable to Yuri. She may or may not be, that doesn't really matter, the important thing is that is how you peak interest in a new character. That kind of focus is what makes a character not feel like a mob and makes readers actually recognize them as being important.
It's a relatively small thing with a big impact. And it's what I think SIU is really good at when he focuses on it.
