Re: Christianity Q&A Thread

@hunter
I understand that No analogy is perfect and mine are definitely not. Thank you for pointing out the flaws, now the "high school" students among us will also be able to understand.

That said water is capable of being in any combination of all three phases at any one instant in time (given the right conditions) as well, so that all properties are present and accounted for simultaneously. So if we want to take this analogy closer to college level understanding then just assume that your water is at the triple point. And Yes, I am fully aware there still might be flaws in even this analogy. But I am not trying to be all encompassing as that is impossible given that no one can fully understand God or his nature. I just hope I was able to help those that wish to understand. Jesus always ended his parables with the words: "He that has ears, let him hear."

Re: Christianity Q&A Thread

I really do not understand the point of this thread. Can anyone just answer a question, or just the topic's creator?

Re: Christianity Q&A Thread

This thread is pretty much a response to the creation of the Islam Q&A thread. In that thread, as far as I can tell (and as far as I can tell in this one too), anyone who is knowledgeable about the topic is free to answer.

if you believe you have the answers , yeah I guess why not, any way, your better of asking tecnomagus, leen or kiddo7, they are the ones that answer most of the questions here, I just ask them because I am interested.

by the way to those mentioned above, I havent had the chance to thank you for answering my questions, especially technomagus for the diagram he made regarding my question about the difference between catholic orthodox and protistant christianity, and also leen and kiddo7 for their detailed and well written explanations, so thank you.

I did not make this thread but ask your self these two question;

1. why should you not be allowed to answer questions here?
2. why should you be allowed to answer questions here?

If you can convince yourself one way or another, you are probably safe to act accordingly.

I for one would be very curious to see what you have to reply to the questions that will yet be raised in this thread. It is always most interesting to learn another persons point of view. If you are still unsure as to whether you can reply or not, you can always pm Leen and ask her.

Re: Christianity Q&A Thread

I have few questions to you chrisitans, if you don't mind. :p

1. Christians, many many times, when praying, address their prayers to Jesus. Well, praying for your saviour sounds fine, aint it? But when you think about it, Jesus was a man. A normal man who was given his powers and quest (if you want to call it like that) from God. God is responsible for this miracle of yours, yet you pray for the "delivary-boy" and not for God himself. Although you do believe in God and in his powers (he didn't die after all), praying for a person or object or what not, except god is called Heretics. And moreover, believing that Jesus will answer your calls also means that there's some kind of another all-mercifull god, thus making Christianity un-monotheisty, or more accuratly, duetheisty. How can christians explain this paradoxes with their believes?

2. Jesus was a jew. His followers (the saints) were jews. The major difference between jews and christians is that the jews are (still) waiting for the messiah while the christians think he already came, with the form of Jesus of Nazereth. So if you don't mind, I will call christians in this answer another name, that will help you understand the quetions. Jews are waiting for the messiah, christians already got it => christians will be called "post-jews" (or PJ in short). So both jews and PJ are actually jews with different opinions about the messiah.
Now, I don't know if you know it, but there's a very known prophet (jewish prophet) which includes the messiah, which called "The after-life prophet" or something likewise. Well anyways, it states that when the messiah will come, the dead will ressurect (not one dead, but a whole bunch of deads :p ), the temple will fall down from the sky from the kindgom of the after-life, there will be no more wars, everything will be fine, etc. etc. And since Jesus is called the messiah for the post-jews, and plainly seeing that nothing happend from the above, that was supposed to happen when the jewish messiah will come. How is it possible that so many christians/post-jews still have faith although their messiah, which is the base of all of their belief, is probably not a messiah at all?

3. I know that some people say that the ressurection of the dead is just the ressurection of Jesus to answer the last question, but researchers have found a cave near Jerusalem, with buried bodies, which have Jesus's family (son and such..) and 90% also his very own body.
Again, the very bases of your faith are being shaken.
-What will the christian world would do when it'll be publicied?
-What will you personally do if you find that your religion is just one big scam/conspiracy?
-And just wanted to state. Generations of generations of christian popes hadn't known a woman body for nothing. ;) Sucks imo... :p

And final cool paradoxial question, which aint necessarily christian-only:
If god is almighty, can do everything, etc. Let's imagine for a sec he has an arm. If he IS almight, can he make an object even he can't lift? :p

P.S: Maybe I'll make a Jewish Q&A thread inspired but the already existing two other's Q&A. :p

Let me first preface this by saying I was raised and confirmed Roman Catholic, but I don't really practice it anymore and I consider myself agnostic. I'm just going by what I learned in catechism.

1. Jesus is included in prayers because he is God in the form of man. A part of the holy trinity, Father-Son-Holy Spirit. God is seen as being in those three forms. So praying to Jesus is no different than praying to God.

2. You're going by what is written in the scriptures in the Jewish faith. To Christians, the return of the messiah will probably result in the same thing there.

3. The discovery was already publicized as far as I know, along with James Cameron's documentary. Me personally, it may very well be Jesus' tomb and it may very well reveal that he had children. It doesn't surprise me if it ended up being true. I don't presonally believe the whole Christian religion hinges on whether Jesus Christ was resurrected. Many things may be shuffled around if this is true, but I doubt this will be universally accepted, regardless if it's fact or not. I no longer live as a Christian so I may be the wrong person to ask.

P.S: Maybe I'll make a Jewish Q&A thread inspired but the already existing two other's Q&A. :p
1.This as you yourself have said is the main difference between Jews and Christians.
Christians believe that Jesus Is God in human form and that he died to become the sacrificial lamb for the sins of the world. Furthermore, Christians believe that Jesus rose from the dead three days after his death. He walked the earth for a time after that and was seen by many before ascending into heaven to prepare a place for his followers and anyone who is willing to accept his sacrifice.
This premise, eliminates all paradox from the belief of Christians. For when they pray to Jesus they are also praying to God AND they are also praying to the Holy spirit simultaneously. Thus believing he will answer prayers does not imply belief in a "duotheistic" Godhead as you proposed, but rather gives proof of Christians faith in the triune God: Three and one at the same time (see the discussion of the trinity, earlier in this thread). This also nullifies the idea that Christians pray to the "delivery boy" for reasons that I have already stated.

2.As you said Jews and Christians could be following the same religion if not for some minor disagreements on a few key issues (Most of these focus around Jesus and whether he was God and by extension the messiah or not).

The prophecy you are referring too sound like the vision of Daniel or the prophecy of Isaiah. (I don't remember exactly, it has been a while since I read it but I can look it up if you insist) Among Christians, it is generally accepted that this section of scripture refers to the second coming of the messiah at the end of the times, shortly before the judging of all people. This is why many Christians are unshaken in their belief. Also since Christians believe Jesus is God in flesh, it is near impossible to convince them that he might not be the messiah.

3.I really do not know of this discovery, but then again I am no scholar i have a friend who is though and I can ask him about it and post his reply for you if you would like me too. It would be nice to have some verifiable proof that the body they found actually belonged to Jesus.

And to your cool paradoxical question;
I can't believe you actually asked that. the last time I heard that question asked I was talking to an elementary school kid who was getting a bit too big for his britches. But seeing as we believe in the same almighty God, how would you answer that question?

And as for the Jewish Q&A thread, Go for it! I might have a few questions to ask eventually. You Jews have a really cool religion, and both Christianity and Islam have their roots in Judaism. It should be only natural to have a Jewish Q&A as well.

Re: Christianity Q&A Thread

quite a bit on the offensive eh? those questions you asked can be more satisfactorily answered by a competent cathechist or theologian but here goes my take....with trusty old wikipedia.... :)

re: nature of Christ

While there have been theological disputes over the nature of Jesus, most Christians believe that Jesus is God incarnate and "true God and true man" (or both fully divine and fully human). Jesus, having become fully human in all respects, including the aspect of mortality, suffered the pains and temptations of mortal man, yet he did not sin. As fully God, he defeated death and rose to life again. According to the Bible, "God raised him from the dead",[14] he ascended to heaven, to the "right hand of God",[15] and will return again[16] to fulfil the rest of Messianic prophecy such as the Resurrection of the dead, the Last Judgment and establishment of the Kingdom of God (See also Messianism and Messianic Age).
since there are many denominations, this is the most generalized answer you'll get. important doctrines such as the incarnation (God incarnate) and hypostatic union (having become fully human) come into effect. try to follow the links above for something more detailed. to note is the "unfulfilled Messianic prophecy" link above which pretty much explains the "apparent incompleteness" of Jesus being the Messiah.

re: "find"
i believe "researchers" have "found" Jesus' "actual body" SEVERAL TIMES in "SEVERAL LOCATIONS" in "SEVERAL TIME PERIODS" in history....;)

same goes for the "bodies" of adam and eve, "remnants" of noah's ark, "sightings" of the ark of the covenant, "relics" of moses' staff, "discoveries" of solomon's treasure"...you get the idea... ;)

when you say 90% his body what do you mean by that? we'll never get any CONCLUSIVE evidence that something is Jesus's body (if it still exists), only through CIRCUMSTANCIAL evidence.

how many carpenters/builders in the 1st century AD do you think were crucified with the name "yesua bar yosef" and buried? to be something more than circumstantial, an unbroken link of evidence from almost 2000 years must be present. and it must be more convincing as king tut's tomb and body....scientifically....and tabloid quality reporting does not help....crop circles have more credibility/exposure than these... ;)

and getting evidence to compare something to be the actual body of Christ is almost surely nonexistent.

details here....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talpiot_Tomb

----------------------------------------------

unfortunately, the whole Christian religion DO hinges on Jesus' resurrection....

Most Christians consider the death of Jesus, followed by his resurrection, the cornerstone of their faith[17] and the most important event in history.[18]
more here...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_and_Resurrection_of_Jesus
As the first great front runner of Christianity contended, "If Christ was not raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your trust in God is useless" (1Corinthians 15:14)[2] The death and resurrection of Jesus are the most important events in Christian Theology, as they form the point in scripture where Jesus gives his ultimate demonstration that he has power over life and death, thus he has the ability to give people eternal life (John 3:16, John 6:47, John 10:10, John 11:25–26, John 17:3, John 5:24, and John 6:39–40). According to the Bible, "God raised him from the dead,"[3] he ascended to heaven, to the "right hand of God,"[4] and will return again[5] to fulfill the rest of Messianic prophecy such as the Resurrection of the dead, the Last Judgment and establishment of the Kingdom of God, see also Messianism and Messianic Age.[6]
The following passage describes the significance of the Resurrection of Christ to Christians or seekers:
If it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep (1Corinthians 15:12–20).

Most Christians accept the New Testament story as an historical account of some kind of resurrection, which is central to their faith. Some modern scholars use the belief of Jesus' followers in the resurrection as a point of departure for establishing the continuity of the historical Jesus and the proclamation of the early church.[7] Some liberal Christians do not accept a literal bodily resurrection,[8] seeing the story as richly symbolic and spiritually nourishing myth. Also, a group known as the Gnostics argued against its singular importance, as they had differing views as to how the passages should be interpreted, many believing Jesus was never a human and so could not have died (see: Docetism).
Almost all non-Christians do not accept the bodily resurrection of Jesus. They therefore deny the resurrection, considering it a form of myth. People can, however, still find a meaning in the text. For instance, Carl Jung suggests that the crucifixion-resurrection story was the forceful spiritual symbol of, literally, God-as-Yahweh becoming God-as-Job.[9]
christianity has been attacked in all fronts from its 2000 years of history and is still standing. since persecutions, political/doctrinal/moral differences, corruption, direct assault have all failed, the new "forefront" of the battle has been with the nature of Christ his resurrection, social problems and morals. and contemporary church authorities are more concerned in the latter where they are the dominant religion.
i think they are also more pre-occupied with surviving with not enough funds and declining church attendance than with a dispute that has been answered a long time ago... ;)

re: "shakedown"
as not all buidings survive a strong earthquake, not all christians will get through these "attacks" because of "poor foundation", and "weak construction..." :tem

-What will you personally do if you find that your religion is just one big scam/conspiracy?
i might still hold on to some of their moral and social teachings.....never gave it much serious thought atm.... :amuse

why don't you also answer it? something along the lines of....

what if kosher food was an economic conspiracy to make money off trying to have the Jews fulfill this part of the dietary requirements of the Law and everything else was made up to be in contrast with the other dominant religions of the time to make them feel "special"? ;)
re: paradox
oh please....:eyeroll
http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_paradox

could you clarify this one?
-And just wanted to state. Generations of generations of christian popes hadn't known a woman body for nothing. ;) Sucks imo... :p
--------------------------------

wow, these q & a threads are really getting interesting.....might need to have a separate religion child board in the future.... :p

Before I ruin this post, I'd like to make it clear that I'm such an atheist, I don't even believe that people who believe in God exist... Nonetheless, my knowledge of things makes it impossible for me to ignore the factual errors in this post. I shall try to address them as they were ordered.

1) Your first point contains no paradox whatsoever, or rather, it's only paradoxical aspect is that you would speak with such authority upon a topic which you clearly know so little about. Essentially, in order to understand Christian doctrine, of all stripes with the exception of Gothic Aryan Christianity (which, so far as I know, hasn't been practiced since the 4th century AD), Christians believe that God and Jesus are the same. I don't want to belabor the point here, because there are volumes of literature-in fact, an entire 2000 thousand year old religion-to attest to this fact. I want you to think about this, and if you're at all as logical as you claim to be, you will immediately see all your points about delivery boys and polytheism vanish from the perspective of a Christian mind. Moreover, as I stated above, not knowing this crucial piece of Christian doctrine truly does demonstrate your lack of knowledge in regard to Christian faith-it's like not understanding the role that Moses plays in Jewish faith...

2) Part A: canonization was not limited to Jews. Indeed, Saint Oswald is an example of this, as well as literally thousands of other Saints besides who the figures I believe you are thinking of, the apostles. For that matter, the process of canonization continues to this very day. As we speak there is a movement afoot to canonize Pope John Paul who recently died. Pope John Paul was a pole, not a Jew, so here is yet another counter example to that first outrageous claim.
Part B: While I don't know enough about the Jewish conception of the messiah to address your second point entirely (notice the humility here) I can tell you this: Christians believe Jesus ressurected from the dead and performed miracles. It is primarily for this reason that Christians believe Christ is the messiah, as rising from the dead is a pretty miraculous thing. Of course there is a lot of history to consider here, such as the influence of the ancient Roman empire, the politics behind conquering the scraps of Rome after its fall, the parallels between Christ and other messianic cults of the day, but overall, from a spiritual point of view, the ressurection is really it. Why? Because God gave his only begotten son to suffer for the sins of the world and thereby rid us of original sin(provided of course you are baptized.) If you don't want to accept that, that's fine, but trying to examine why one group of fools thinks a falling church implies the presence of a messiah whilst another is willing to settle merely on the resurrection of a single individual is sort of like trying to argue why Square-circles are more plentiful than Angles on the head of a pin. One might also just say the more obvious thing, which is one needs a lot of faith to believe in obviously impossible things-Christian, Jewish, and otherwise-and therefore find it suspect to question another's impossible beliefs if they themselves believe in similar impossible things.

3) I imagine Christians will do the same thing upon discovering that Jesus is buried under a coffee shop in Israel as the Jews will do once they figure out Moses sat on a mountain creating all that Jewish law by himself. You want to talk about absurd, before there was even a Jesus there was an entire religion based upon what appears to be a very, very poorly performed sleight of hand. That an entire tribe of caananites wouldn't say to themselves, "hang on, Moses was sitting up there for a while, maybe he just carved those tablets himself" is as ridiculous as anything a Christian believe. And prior to that in history, you can really only resort to the time of Abraham when humans were supposed to live for 900 or so years, so using wildly unverifable evidence isn't going to help you much either if your overall goal is to demonstrate the scientific impossibility of a religion. You refer to Christians as post-Jews, which is itself fairly offensive considering their beliefs, but if that is so, then PJ's as you say are simply the fruit of a poison tree. In any case, if you haven't noticed, none of the Abrahamic religions (judaism, christianity, and islam) are very logically sound; do you really think the putative evidence of a single researcher and the director of Terminator 2 is going perturb such people, that is, people who already accept as fact impossible things? There are people alive right now who think dinosaur bones are a conspiracy, or the remnants of devils! I'll die laughing if anything James Cameron finds truly puts to rest the whole of Christian faith.

4) Your cool "paradoxical" question isn't really very paradoxical if you properly define God. Lord knows I've tried breaking down Christian's arguments this way myself, and their counter is somewhat satisfying, unfortunately for me. God is, by definition, capable of any task, therefore to conceive of a task which he cannot complete simply is to say that task does not exist. Sof, if you recall the definition of a paradox, you'll discover that your question isn't paradoxical at all, because one of its premises is false. A statement is only paradoxical if, at the very least, all of its premises are true. So in other words, your question presupposes the definition that God is not capable of all things, as in your scenario, you have conceived of a God whom is incapable of performing a particular task. But that is not a God at all, for I can imagine a God still greater! Furthermore, just on a personal note, has it occured to you that since Christians believe in essentially the same God as the Jews and the Muslims, that any fact which undermines the Christian God's existence also undermines the other two? Kind of renders your entire post about the beliefs of the Jews being anymore credible than those of the Christians a bit moot if you think about it.

5) I hope if you do start a Jewish thread, you're as honest in dealing with Judaism as you think are being with Christianity, since all religions are ridiculous from a scientific perspective. I mean, if you're going to quote the director of T2 and his research team to "expose" Christianity as a fraud, maybe you would like to say something about how insanely impossible it would be, from a mathematical point of view alone, for something like Noah's arc to exist. I mean, maybe it was a miracle of God's, but if you're willing to accept that, then how is it any less possible that Jesus was also a miracle of God? I mean, there is no reliable logical source with which to counter that claim, just other beliefs, as you have already done in your original post. But then one could just say that pink unicorns cloaked in silver really run the universe and your God is just THEIR messiah, they are that powerful! You see, you really must respect other people's beliefs, because in the end, if you're a believer yourself, you should understand how vulnerable all believers can be to ridicule. We know the sun isn't pulled around the sky in a chariot anymore, so it's becoming increasing more difficult to condescend to one religion from another just because you think your religion is the right one.

EDIT: apologies to the above posters, as I see you made a lot of the points I did before me. I just read the original post and was stunned by its inaccuracy, so I fired away. But it was so long I'm loathe to erase it, so you'll have to forgive me.
